All success is based on relationships and all business success is predicated upon the ability to create, nurture and sustain healthy business relationships. Because you don't achieve success alone. Not Steve Jobs, not Mark Zuckerberg, and not Barbara Corcoran of Shark Tank. But you already know this because nurturing healthy business relationships is part of your genius. You've probably heard of the show Shark Tank. Imagine you're an entrepreneur Walking into the tank, seeking money and connections, partnerships, strategic relationships the sharks can provide that will open up doors and opportunities for your business that would otherwise remain closed. The entire premise of this award winning show is based on the belief that you need both money and healthy business relationships for your business to succeed. And yet there is so much information that shows you how to start, run and grow a business and very little quality information that shows you how to nurture healthy business relationships and perhaps more importantly, how to repair those relationships when they become damaged. Well, today is your lucky day because the doctor is in the house. I'm an expert who has been helping entrepreneurs repair their damaged relationships in both their personal and professional lives for a long time. And today I am privileged to share with you three simple yet highly effective tools you can use to repair your business relationships when they become damaged. And you can implement these tools immediately. Here is a true story that tells you how powerful these tools are. Imagine you're the owner of a Silicon Valley tech company that creates apps and you bring me in to work with your lead developer, your engineer, and your top salesperson because your company has just missed its past three sales projections. Following one conversation with these two, it took me about a New York minute to figure out that this relationship had become so toxic. There was a complete breakdown in communication and this permeated their departments. Can you imagine how your sales team, not talking to your engineers, utilizing the tools I'm going to share with you today? I was able to repair the damage between the engineer and the salesperson. I was able then to establish effective communication between the department and as you can imagine, what did that do? It improved the decision making, it increased productivity, it increased efficiency, and the following year the company doubled its revenue. This is how powerful these tools are. The first tool you need to repair a damaged business relationship is to reestablish the trust that has broken down by considering the possibility that maybe, just maybe, there is more than one truth. Because truth is not a zero sum game. You have your own subjective version of truth based upon your perspective and your life experience. Take a look at this beach ball. The ball is green, orange and yellow.
Yes.
And are you absolutely, positively, 100% certain that that's the color on this ball? Because I see white, red and blue. So now, using the same beach ball, what colors do you see when I show it to you from a different perspective? Now you see green, orange, yellow, blue, white and red. Or at least I hope you did. Your truth changes when your perceptive percent of the situation changes. In business, we become so entrenched in our truth, we can't even consider the possibility that there's another truth based on a different perception, and our relationships remain fractured. So re establishing trust by considering the possibility that there is more than one truth is a simple and highly effective tool you can use to repair your damaged business relationship. The second tool you need to repair your damaged business relationship is emotional intelligence, demonstrated by knowing your triggers. Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and control your emotions in real time. Instead of having your emotions control you, the way to do that is to know your triggers. What are triggers? Triggers are anything that sets you off in response to a real or imagined threat that creates a visceral reaction in your body. Triggers are responsible for your flight and fight responses. When triggered, the amygdala, the most ancient part of your brain that controls your emotions, immediately gets activated, and it hijacks the prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain responsible for executive functioning. That is your logic, your rationality, your thought. When triggered, you respond emotionally in an unhinged, irrational way. Imagine that lateness is your trigger and you don't know it. Inevitably, somebody comes waltzing into your meeting or gets on your Zoom call and they're late. You immediately respond by yelling at them. If you knew that lateness was your trigger, you would then have the opportunity to respond to that behavior in a more emotionally rational way. So emotional intelligence, demonstrated by knowing your triggers, is a simple yet highly effective tool you can use to repair your damaged business relationships. The third tool you can use to repair your damaged business relationship is communication, with the primary focus of communication being to establish a connection. First and foremost, you have many reasons for communicating. To persuade, to sell, to entertain. However, without establishing a connection first, your message will fall on deaf ears. Theodore Roosevelt said, nobody will care about how much you know if they don't know how much you care. And no one can know how much you care if you haven't established a connection with them. This is because connection is a prerequisite for empathy, and empathy is at the heart of repairing a damaged business relationship. So communication, with the primary goal being to establish a connection followed by your message, is a simple and highly effective tool you can use to repair your damaged business relationship. So today we discussed three simple and highly effective tools you can use to repair damaged business relationship. And you see you can implement them immediately upon leaving today's event. So here's what you can do. Think about one business relationship you would like to repair and think about how much better you'll feel about your business and your life. When this relationship is healthier, then remember the beach ball. Reestablish trust by looking at the issue from the other person's perspective. Know your triggers so you can respond to them in an emotionally intelligent way and communicate with the primary goal being to establish a connection first, followed by your message. Then think about how much better you'll feel about that relationship on an emotional, personal level. And think of all the benefits that your business will reap, giving you more money, energy, and time to spend with the ones you love. Playing with this beach ball catch.
