I'm dean jackson, he's joe polish, and this is the I love marketing podcast. Hey, everybody, it's Dean Jackson and Joe Polish.
And a special guest, something I've never done before, which is, you know, I've got my girlfriend who I've never publicly tell people who my girlfriend is. But we'll explain this in a minute, why she's on and how this is happening. And as soon as I make this public, she's probably going to believe me. So whatever, we'll see what happens. But many people know that know us. It's the beautiful, the lovely, the wonderful Renee.
Aria.
Renee. Aria. Really?
Thank you, Dean Jackson and Joe Polish. I'm really happy to be here and make Joe even look better than what he already does on these. I love marketing interviews.
Yeah, well, she's an energy healer. So, you know, a lot of people do know Renee. She actually has a very high level program that she charges $10,000 a year for, you know, goddess retreats. And we're getting ready to do one at Necker island and all kinds of cool stuff. So let me explain what's going on. We're going to someone who I think is pretty awesome and her name is Sarah Gottfried. And Sarah, you're with us right now. You can hear us? Okay.
Right, I can. Yes. Hi, everybody.
Well, good. Well, get ready everyone, because this is going to be cool. So let me first introduce who Sarah is and then we're going to ask her a bunch of important questions. The topic of this I Love marketing episode is going to be not really about marketing, although Sarah is actually very good at marketing. But it's going to be about overcoming overwhelm for entrepreneurs and the cost of being a badass and five ways to transmute costs into roi. Now that'll make more sense in just a couple minutes. So who is Sara Gottfried? She's a doctor. She's an md. She's a Harvard educated physician, she's a speaker, she's an author, and she's got a brand new New York Times best selling book called the Hormone Reclaim Balance, Sleep, Sex Drive and Vitality with the Gottfried Protocol. And it was published by Simon and Schuster. And so for the past 20 years, Dr. Sarah has been dedicated to helping men and women create next gen robust health and thereby rock their mission. She offers breakthrough concierge coaching virtually and in her novel online learning center and growing community@thehormonecurebook.com and I've been reading this book since last night. It is really awesome. Although it's written for women, I Think anyone would get tremendous value out of it. And so after graduating from Harvard Medical School and MIT, Dr. Sarah completed her residency at the University of California at San Francisco where she still teaches medical students. She is a nationally recognized thought leader and yoga teacher and teaches men and women how to rebalance their hormones naturally. She's been featured on 2020 in the Ricki Lake show. And Sarah, there's probably other shows you've been on going to be on that sort of stuff. I'll ask you that in a minute. And she's also been featured in the award winning film Yoga Women, Yoga Woman. So without butchering up your bio too badly, hopefully that was good. What else do they need to know about you that qualifies you to basically instruct our listeners of I love marketing, how to overcome overwhelm and how to just be more awesome at being a badass and not burn yourself out in the process of doing so.
What else do they need to know? Well, I would say energy is really what I want to be talking about today. I think it's the rate limiting step for so many entrepreneurs. And I want to talk about energy today in that, in that really hard science is sexy type of a way, not the woo woo sense. So how do we profit amplify by really focusing on energy.
I hear you. Well, Dean, now you actually said something before we started recording and I want you to elaborate on the whole concept of energy. Because when we set this up we're like, how can we bring something unique to our listeners they've probably not heard before in this way. And who could we have be one of the most awesome people to do it. And of course that is, that's Dr. Sarah here. So talk a little bit about energy, what she just said.
Well, we were talking earlier that this whole trifecta of really having clarity, which is something that Dan Sullivan really helps us achieve by getting really clear on what our opportunities are, what our unique ability is, what our largest check is, getting clear on all of the things that are gonna be the best things for spend our time on. And then we're saying that Ned Hallowell really the single word that he embodies for us is focus. How to focus on doing the things that we know that we need to do. But the engine that drives all of that is really energy. And the more you know, you know it yourself, when you're low energy, when you're tired, when you're stressed, when you're overwhelmed, all of those things are kind of negative energy. Things that feel like a drain on you. And when you're positive, when you're clear, when you're focused and you can bring energy to that positive, like, vibrant energy, that is the biggest win that we could have as entrepreneurs. That's really what's going to drive everything. So I'm very excited to hear Sarah's ideas about how to really maximize our energy. And I think just from the brief times that we've been talking is overcoming the negative energy and turning that into positive energy is really going to be a real asset for us as entrepreneurs.
Very cool. Well, I'd like to get Sarah to respond to that and even define what energy is and anything else about herself that I didn't say or should have said. And then I'm going to do something that's very hard for me to do, which is shut up as much as I can during this interview and let Renee give. Since Renee works in the energy field in a lot of ways, have her make some comments, ask some questions, things like that. So, Dr. Sarah, go for it.
Well, you know, when I think about energy, I think about many different ways that it's used in the body. I go immediately to, okay, where are we with the science, with the data? And as you all know, we're at this place where we've learned more about neuroscience in the past couple of years than we have in the past few thousand. I think it's really important to kind of realize, okay, how do we leverage this really cool science that's coming out? How do we stay in that Goldilocks position with stress, where you have enough stress, what I call eustress. I stress, you stress. You have enough stress so that you are not apathetic. You're moving forward, you're able to have what Dean was just describing, the clarity, the focus, but you're not on that, that slippery slope of too much stress where you're burning through your happy brain chemicals, your happy hormones, your prosperity hormones that we're going to be talking about today. So to me, energy is a little slippery if we have to describe it from a scientific perspective. I think it comes down to how you're managing what I would call your neurohormonal dashboard, kind of that. That place, that balance between your highest self, your highest feminine, highest masculine, your heart really having your heart and authenticity in your work. And you're not becoming burnt toast.
I like that. Burnt toast. I mean, there's a lot of people out there that are probably. That's a good analogy to describe themselves as burnt toast. So you're talking about Hormones. And your book is called the Hormone Cure. I mean, I guess for just absolute layman, which I would put myself into that category. What does that even mean, the hormone cure? You've been studying biology for 20 years. You're a yoga teacher, you work with cutting edge medicine. And plus, you also, from the time that I've known you, the short time you work with ancient wisdom, you specialize in biohacking entrepreneurs. I mean, you do all kinds of crazy stuff. So, you know, what does the hormone cure even mean? Like when you wrote the book, what's the big win? When people read it and they understand this.
The big win is realizing that the reason you feel like crap is probably your hormones. And a lot of people go to that place of feeling like it's their fault that they're not able to have, you know, the net profit that they want or they're not able to serve their tribe the way they want or really rock their mission. So I want to dial this back and say, hey, guys, let's look at the biology first. I think it's really important to do that. I mean, of course, many of us need to work on some of the emotional pieces as well, but I like to start with the biology, especially when it comes to energy and that backflip that energy can sometimes do and become overwhelmed. So the idea with the Hormone Cure is that I've been taking care of people for a while. It's been a couple of decades, as you described. Joe and I found that we live in a culture that's really obsessed with using prescription drugs as an answer to health. I'm going to take a sip of tea here for a moment. And what I mean by this is, for instance, when I was in my 30s and I was working in MC medicine and I was churning, I had PMS. I was struggling. I was about 25 pounds more in weight than I am now. And I just felt like I was pushing a rock up a hill, like I was working way too hard. And I felt too young to feel so old. I went to my doctor and he offered me an antidepressant. So this was about 12 years ago. This was Prozac. Prozac was all the rage back then. And that was a defining moment for me because that's when I realized, whoa, wait a minute, I'm not depressed. I'm a stress case. I'm not in that Goldilocks position of just the right amount of stress to kind of get me moving forward. But I don't think the answer is an antidepressant. In fact, they only are effective if you have severe depression. And that's the minority of people who take them. So that's when I realized, wow, we've got to find a different way to deal with some of these problems that most of us are facing. And the most common problem I see is overwhelm. So it took me kind of taking on biohacking at that moment. I'm staring at that Prozac description prescription, and I just, I decided, okay, I think this is hormonal. I had a hunch, I checked my hormones, and indeed I had a problem with cortisol. Cortisol's that main stress hormone. And it's the main hormone that I think is holding back entrepreneurs.
Wow, Sarah, I think this is such an incredible point that you're bringing up right now. And kind of one of my personal interests with being on the phone and, you know, being kind of in an attuned way, woman who myself, I've gone through a ton of health problems, you know, over the last 20 years. So I've really been forced to kind of go behind the scenes, you know, and, and make my own discoveries about the biology of what can affect us in overwhelm. And I think why it's so important that we're on this call with you today is because oftentimes entrepreneurs try to solve the issue of overwhelm from the same system that the overwhelm is generating from. So in this case, it's trying to often find different strategies to get over overwhelm that are from the mind. And what you have to share is something that I believe is the root cause of a lot of people's overwhelm, that you can't always solve the problem of overwhelm by trying to make yourself have different mind focusing strategies. But when you really start kind of looking under the covers for things, you know, I do believe that the majority of people are suffering from hormonal imbalances. And I'm just curious to ask you people that come in and do work with you, do you at this point in time have any type of percentages on those people in the world that are actually carrying like hormone deficiencies or imbalances?
Yeah, well, thank you. I mean, you know that I'm this MIT biohacker, so you know that I love data. So nothing makes me do the happy dance like asking me about data. So yes, I know that 91% of my list struggles with energy. And it's not necessarily low energy, it's not necessarily fatigue, it's inconsistent Energy where some mornings you wake up and you feel like a total cranky pants and the first thing you can think of is having coffee or maybe you feel really good energy in the morning and then you crash between 2 and 5pm it's almost as if your energy keeps bankers hours and you fall short towards the end of the day. So I think you raised such an important point, Renee, as we're talking about what is the hormone cure? I definitely know what it's not. It's not finding the answer in the bottom of a prescription pill bottle. It definitely is using a system kind of stepping out of what you were describing. You know, the same system that is making you feel like burnt toast is not your salvation. When you're driven by cortisol, by bad stress, by your adrenals, those cute little glands in your mid back that secrete cortisol, as well as other sex hormones. When you're driven by your adrenals, that's how you become burnt toast. And when you're able to step away from that, when you're able to realize, okay, my cortisol is crazy, it's too high, it's too low, maybe even both within the same day, when you get your cortisol into that sweet spot again, it makes all the difference. Now, the methods for doing it as you described, Renee, are not necessarily with the mind. I mean, that works for some people. It can work for a short time, but I think it's really important to really have an integrative approach to creating a cure. You're much more likely to get a hormone cure if you address the root cause of why you feel like crap. If you address the root cause of why you can't sleep, or why you have more injuries, or why you'd rather mop the floor than have sex with your husband. I think it's really important to realize it's probably hormonal. So 91% of the folks on my list struggle with energy. And how many of those have hormone issues? All of them. Right.
Well, the other interesting thing is too, I think that there seems to be a very almost a common myth. Do you find that a lot of people associate this sense of hormone imbalance with being just only a feminine issue?
Oh, I'm so glad you raised this. Yes. You know, if we just dial back to this idea of overwhelm, it's true that men and women feel overwhelmed differently. And I'm really glad that you're sort of calling out that this is a problem that both women and men face. And the Way it shows up is a little bit different. And yes, Joe, you're right that my book the Hormone Cure is designed for women. But as my husband will affectionately say, he'll be like, guys, if your woman's hormonal, you are in total trouble. Actually, he has some different language that he uses that's not pg, but he's just like, buy this book, get this book for every woman in your life because it's going to make your life better if you take this on. So the way that men feel overwhelmed, I really think it shows up more as anger and resentment, maybe even feeling somewhat repellent. And this especially gets directed toward a spouse. Women tend to feel overwhelmed more as anxiety or you know, just like they're, they're working hard, they're running task to task. Maybe sleep is an issue. We know that women have double the rates of difficulty with sleep. It can affect mood. But for all of these issues, whether you're male or female, it comes down to cortisol. Cortisol is like the king of the hormone imbalances because it affects your thyroid, your testosterone, your estrogen, and these are important for both men and women.
Yeah, you know what? Let's talk about your husband for just a minute. For no other reason than just to throw it in and let me have an add moment. The way I actually came to know you, Sarah, was me and Renee were on a trip to Turks and Caicos with our goofy friend Brendon Bouchard, who we've of course interviewed on I love marketing before.
Love you, Brendan.
I don't really like Brendan that much. Don't say nice things about him. But anyway, so we were on the island. I was getting completely attacked by mosquitoes and sand flies. And I was talking to, met Sarah's husband, David Gottfried, who actually created the LEED certified program. So when people hear about environmentally safe buildings, LEED certified David created that. So we were having all kinds of conversations about where he used to be health wise and just how he's had so much transformation and how he's married to this amazing woman, you. And that's how it all started. So we had like several hours of conversation related to health and transforming your life and being a busy, successful entrepreneur. And you can know everything in the world about marketing and management. But if your health is shot, if you can't think straight. And that's where it led to, to what we're doing right now, which is interviewing you and asking you questions about this, just to share this great knowledge with our listeners. I just Wanted to give a shout out to David, who's also written a couple of books, Greening youg Life and things like that. But yeah, this applies to men and women. And if anyone is expecting a marketing strategy here on this episode, here's one thing I recommend. Get on Sarah's list and see how she's taking this incredibly useful knowledge that, that I do recommend. If you're a guy, get this for your mom, get it for your sisters, get it for your friends, get it for your girlfriends, whatever, and read it. I think you'd get a lot out of it. But that being said, you're also doing some really cool marketing stuff too, because one thing that you do know is even having the best advice and information in the world, it doesn't sell itself. You actually have to set it up and deliver it to people. So you actually are very smart in your marketing. You've hit New York Times. What are some other talk shows that you're going to be on here soon? So people, aside from hearing you here, they can maybe see you on tv. I know you got some stuff in the works. So what are things that you actually can talk about?
Oh, sure. So I've booked the Dr. Oz Show. I've got the Today show.
Yay.
I've got. There's actually a new show that's just getting announced. It's the Lisa Oz Show. So this is wife of that cutie pie, Dr. Oz, the Lisa Gar Show. So there's some shows coming up. And I, I just wanted to call this Whatever Happened in the Caribbean. I just wanted to call it a bromance because my husband just came back thinking the world of you, Joe, and you, Renee, too.
Thank you. We really enjoyed our conversations with him. He's an awesome guy.
You know what? I'll do too, because I did ask you, Sarah, about this, Dean. We will put a link on ilovemarketing.com so if you're listening to this on itunes, go to our website@ilovemarketing.com this is. This will be episode 110. And click on the link so that you can actually get Sarah's book. This will not be an affiliate link that will make me and Dean money. Me and Dean, we don't want any money out of anything that she sells or any book sells or anything. We just simply want to show our listeners what she's doing and how she's doing it and give you the opportunity to not just get her book, which you can get on Amazon or any bookstores, but if you actually want to go through her process. You can get it that way. She does what smart marketers do. She gives videos, she gives educational materials, she teaches people. She uses one of the most effective ways to market anything, which is education based marketing in the same way that we do. I love marketing episodes. So we'll have a website on a link there so you can get it on. I love marketing. All right, so I'm done babbling here and I guess to get back to what we were saying before I rudely interrupted Dean, what do you have to say? You got to have an awesome question about overwhelm and stuff that Sarah can.
Well, I'm anxious to hear the. I think everybody kind of can see the symptoms and everybody's kind of wondering, what do we do to. A lot of people probably haven't ever thought about it as hormonal. And it just happens that I've gone through this whole process of doing hormonal balancing and getting all those markers tested. And I have been doing this for almost two years now. And it's been part of a tremendous thing in helping my energy levels. And I've lost a significant amount of weight getting all of that in balance. And I feel great and I'm able to have that kind of. So I know it's really been a real benefit in my life. And I'm a guy, so it's not just for women for sure.
Well, you got it. I mean, thank you for sharing that story, Dean, and thank you, Jo, for posting the links. I really appreciate that. I like to keep this astonishingly simple. I know our listeners don't have a lot of time, so if we're going to. If we're going to start to turn this ship around, I like to start with some of the top problems that people face. What are those hormone problems? We got to figure that out first. We need to know the root cause. And as I was describing earlier, when you figure out the root cause and you address that, you're much more likely to get the hormone cure. So the idea here is that there's three main hormones. If we apply Pareto's rule to hormone balance, there's three main hormones that really are the ones that you want to focus on. For women, it's your cortisol, your estrogen, and your thyroid. I call it your hormonal Charlie's Angels. Because all three of these need to be working for you, not against you. And there's a lot of cross talk between them, just as Renee was suggesting earlier. For guys, it's actually what I Call the three amigos. It's your cortisol, your testosterone. You want all three of those working for you, not against you. And Dean, you also mentioned weight loss. That's kind of the bonus prize when you get these hormones serving you again in the best way. So they're in that Goldilocks place. Not too high, not too low. That's when the weight starts to fall off. Like if we have any listeners who have weight loss resistance or fat loss resistance, these are the hormones that really are the small hinges that swing big doors. They affect insulin, they affect leptin, they affect all these hormones that control your ease around your weight as well.
That's awesome.
I wanted to throw in there. Sarah, that's amazing. Great information. I think that kind of gives a foundation of where people can start their inquiry process. And just on a little side note, beings that this is an I love marketing episode. I just kind of want to throw in an observation from the marketing perspective. You have done something very, very smart in your communication method to people with creating your own terminology, like your own phraseology, and very interesting, easy to follow metaphors with how you communicate health to people. Because sometimes it's not the most interesting subject for people to talk about. And I think that people have subconscious fears, honestly, about kind of diving into their health. So I love what you're doing with your phraseology around like the Charlie's Angels and the three Amigos. So I just wanted to give a shout out to you on that level because it's very smart.
Well, thank you, Renee. I mean, we've got to have some fun as we get these hormones into balance. Otherwise it's just not worth it. If you're not having fun, then cortisol is not loving you up. And it's all about getting cortisol to love you up again and not be making you fat, cranky, with high blood pressure and high blood sugar, where you hear jungle drums if you don't start chomping on some donuts. So we've got to turn that around.
Yeah, you know, I like that. Well, in the beginning of your book, you make this comment that you say, I've helped many women transform hormonal problems using simple yet powerful techniques. The good news is it's easier to rebalance your hormones than to live with misery of hormonal imbalance. And I have a friend named Dave Kekich who's been paralyzed from the chest down for over 30 years. But in spite of that, he just exercises every day, although he can't walk. I mean, he's just an amazing thinker. He's in his mid-70s and he's really learned a lot about how to live the best life he can in spite of challenges that he lives with that many people, you know, never have to deal with or endure. And he has these credos that he wrote called kekish credos. And one of the ones that stands out for me is where it's life's easy if you live it the hard way and hard if you live it the easy way. And my interpretation of living it the hard way really may sound hard. Like exercise, eat right, learn about what's going on in your body, read books. I mean, do that sort of stuff. I mean, most people would find, oh, I can't make time to go to the gym, I can't check my hormone balances or my cortisol or my estrogen. They don't do stuff like that. But if you actually do figure this out, then life is much easier. And if you don't, life could be miserable. One of the things that we simply want to produce out of, I love marketing listeners, is we simply want to make me and Dean Renee, all of us, we're really known in the world of marketing. But what we really teach people how to do is just simply how to be more effective entrepreneurs, how to be more effective human beings. And so with all of, there's a lot that they can get out of your book. And I'm going to recommend that people just get the book. I mean, it's, you know, for a tiny amount of money you can get just so much resources. So I want to go through some just fundamental things that we can cover to first, what do they need to do to identify stuff and then some tips and suggestions that people can put to use, you know, as they're listening to, you know, after they're done listening to this that they can immediately put to use and then the things that they need to delve deeper in by reading your book and stuff. You know, we'll recommend that they do that. But you know, going back to just the cost of being an entrepreneurial badass, I'd like to have you identify what is the cost of driving yourself but doing it recklessly. Because, you know, I'm, I'm a big believer in being an achievement minded entrepreneur and that, you know, the 95% of people that are unsuccessful in business are the people that are not willing to do the things that the 5% are willing to do. However, there's a big difference between being successful Financially versus being successful as a human being and having health and feeling good and that sort of thing. I'd like to have you kind of go through some just fundamentals.
Oh, definitely. And I so appreciate the quote you brought in from your friend Dave. I think that we're at a place right now where we know that 50 to 80% of how your DNA is expressed is based on how you eat, move, think and supplement. And I think Dave speaks to that really beautifully in the quote that you read that, you know, if you. It's hard if you. How did it go? Life is easy if you live it the hard way, and it's hard if you live it the easy way. If you're. If you're eating packaged foods. And I think a lot of entrepreneurs do this. I know that I've had my own share of lunches in front of my laptop where I'm pretty stressed and I'm eating. And that is not the way you want to be eating. It raises your cortisol. You're more likely to not notice the calories that are coming in. You're not attuned. And food is information. It's information for your DNA. So we've got to start basically with our fork in terms of getting hormones in balance and being able to be a badass in the world and not have significant costs. So what are some of those costs? Well, first of all, it fries your hippocampus when you have cortisol. That's too high when you're overly stressed. And this is the problem of almost every alpha male I know, every type A personality. It's also an issue for women. We. We know that stress favors men. So this is, you know, both men and women are vulnerable. Women are especially vulnerable. So it can fry your hippocampus. That's the lovely part of your brain that does emotional regulation and memory consolidation. You need emotional regulation and memory consolidation to really be able to be who you want to be in the world as an entrepreneur. It also puts you at an increased risk of dementia, Alzheimer's disease. This is everyone's sort of number one fear about getting older. So let's prevent this. Prevent it by getting cortisol into the normal place. Same thing with your thyroid. So if your thyroid is off, if it's slow, it's linked to a greater risk of Alzheimer's disease. I don't know about you, but I don't want to have the big A. It does a lot of other things, too. I'm just going to hit a few highlights. I mentioned that it raises your blood sugar, it can give you prediabetes and diabetes and make you store fat like nobody's business, especially at your belly. So if you look down at your belly right now and it's spilling over your genes. Let's talk cortisol. It's probably cortisol. Growth hormone might be involved too, but that's the advanced version. We'll get to that, maybe in another session. The other point I want to make about this, you're right that I really like to look at some of the ancient wisdom traditions. So I'm going to. I'm going to bring in one here very briefly and kind of give it some current biology. When I was in my 30s and I was burning the candle at both ends, and I was working harder, not smarter, until I started the Godfrey protocol for my own cortisol situation. And I got my Cortisol normalized in four weeks and then turned it on the next 10,000 clients that I took care of and found that it worked fabulously. What I was doing was burning through something called natal qi. And for our listeners who are into traditional Chinese medicine, you might have heard of this before. Qi is life force. And we're really talking about life force. It's another way that I would define energy. How much life force do you feel when you wake up in the morning? A lot of it is under your control. So there's this idea that there's several different types of life force. There's a form of life force called natal qi that you're born with. You get it from your parents at conception. And the interesting part about it, and I want everyone to listen in for this part, you can't add to it, you can't supplement your natal qi. You will burn through it at a certain rate as you get older. And the only way to maximize your natal qi, your needle life energy, is to slow down your use of it, to conserve it, to use your energy much more strategically, effectively, smarter. So that's what we're talking about today. So when you're burning through your natal Qi, another thing that happens is that you're shortening your telomeres. And I'm sure many of our listeners have heard this term before because the Nobel Prize was given to Elizabeth Blackburn at UCSF for her work on telomeres. They are the sweet little caps on your chromosomes that stabilize your chromosomes and keep them from unwinding. And what you want is you want your telomeres to be long and lovely. And when you're a stress case, when You're a badass and you're not managing the stress in an effective way. You will burn through those telomeres. They'll become shorter. And research at UCSF shows that women especially who are not getting enough sleep, who have high perceived stress on average, age about 10 years faster than women who are controls, who are not burning through their natal qi like this. And so it's not just some woo woo idea. You can actually age, really in an accelerated way. We don't want that. And it's, it's a problem for both men and women. We definitely know that when it comes to your telomeres, this is an important marker that some of our listeners might want to measure because it's the best indicator of your biological aging as opposed to your chronological aging.
Is there anything that you can do to act on that? Is that changeable or is it just diagnostic kind of thing? It is what it is.
Well, I always have a lot of hope. I feel like it's never too late, it's never too early. When it comes to getting your hormones into balance, we know that when cortisol is high, that causes a problem with your telomeres. So, yes, there's so many things you can do. I've got a long list for you. I think I've got about 97 ways you can address it in my book. One of the things you can do, I mean, first of all, getting back to this issue of root cause, you probably have a hormone imbalance and don't know it. And so I think it's important to quiz yourself. And you can get my book, you can do kind of the thorough questionnaire that I have in my book, starting in chapter one, where I have 122 questions that really identify what your hormonal root causes of any symptoms that you have. You can also do a short version of it. Joe, is it okay if I mention a quiz that we can have your listeners go to?
Absolutely. Go for it. Of course. Yeah.
Cool. Okay, so here's a quick quiz. If you go to thehormonecurebook.com ilovemarketingquiz. Thehormonecurebook dot com ilovemarketingquiz. That'll get you the quiz. And that's the way to start off. I think that's really important. So I was just trying to sketch some ideas around what the cost is of being a badass where you're not managing these hormones. And that's just a few highlights. I could keep going. You know, it also, as I mentioned earlier, burns through your happy Brain chemicals. It's going to make you more likely to feel just irritated or, you know, like ugh, ugh or meh. Those are sort of the emotions that come from cortisol not being in the right place.
Well, that sort of describes like most of humanity in terms of how the angst. But you know, you said something interesting, I think in your book also you talk about, I think women, like one in four women in the United States is on some sort of prescription drug for depression. Is that number right or was I confusing that with another stat you put in there?
No, you're right on. So one in four women across the age ranges is taking a drug for mental health. One in seven men, if you specifically look at women of a certain age, and now we're talking about my age range. So from 40 to 55, it's one in four women are on an antidepressant. And what makes me crazy there is that most of those women have a hormone imbalance and they don't know it. 50% of them have high cortisol, 20% of them have low thyroid and they're getting treated with exactly the wrong thing. Wow.
Yeah. Well, here's the thing too, because I'm sitting there thinking of right now at the time we're doing this, I'm 45 years old. When I was young, when I was in my 20s and 30s, not that I didn't hear this stuff or maybe look into it. And I've always been someone that early on. I don't know where I picked this up on. I heard this term, if you don't take time out for it now, your health, you're going to take time out for it later. And that sort of stuck with me and has been one of the motivations of why I really attempt to eat clean. And you know, growing up, my mother died when I was younger.
That is funny because I've heard that same thing. Joe, I just saw something the other day that the cycle of entrepreneurial life is you spend your health getting money and then you spend your money regaining your health.
Exactly. And see, part of it is like what I was saying was I grew up not eating really healthy food. My father was the one who raised me and my brother as I became an adult, I was trying to make up for all the processed crap and stuff that I did not really get nourish wise as a kid. But I wasn't thinking about hormone stuff. I wasn't thinking about this when I was in my 20s and 30s. I know we have a lot of listeners right now that they're like, oh, yeah, when I reach 45, 50, maybe I'll look into this. But right now I just want to figure out how to better market and make a shitload of money. And what I want to really instill in people, no matter what age they're at, is like, what is more freaking important than your health? Because how effective are you going to be if you're lethargic, that you can't sleep? You're in a pissy mode all the time. And I've been learning a lot because one thing we didn't mention yet is me and Renee had Sarah, you know, send us tests. And we actually, we are looking in things that are, you know, can be dramatically improved. And I'm someone that, you know, I'd go out of my way to try to eat healthy and, you know, going back to the living life the hard way. You know, me and Renee are really particular on, you know, Renee had massive brain surgery in 2004. So she's been through all kinds of stuff. And, you know, part of it, we have a lot of people that are listening that travel. And it's a lot easier to, when you're very hungry at the airport, to go to a crappy fast food place there than to carry some of your own food or be on an airplane and get a Coke versus carrying water. But those are the little things that make a difference. But even doing all of that, if you don't know where you're at with even measuring this stuff, you don't even know where to start. So I think a lot of people right now just simply don't feel good going back to what you said, Sarah, and they don't know why. And I think this will shed a light on it, and then people can really do something about it, because people that, you know, when you're talking about, I made that comment, you know, it sounds like the whole population. I mean, this is why I think it's so important to have these sort of conversations. And most people left to their own devices that are in our world, may not be going out and looking at this, but so we're forcing it upon them right now by doing an episode on it. So what would you suggest to our listeners as some things that you just absolutely know if they did these things would help them and maybe talk about, you know, after they do the quiz, then what. What are the next steps?
What.
What happens?
Sure. Well, the quiz is definitely going to give you a roadmap, and we want a roadmap. You know, just as you described, Joe, what you measure improves? I didn't say that. I think it was Lord Kelvin like hundreds of years ago who said that. But yeah, we, we know it's really important. Right? And you are so on spot with this idea that your hormones start to change a lot earlier than you might think. When I was in my twenties, I thought that I didn't need to worry about my hormones. I thought that menopause was this cliff I was going to fall off of around 50, and I just wasn't even going to worry about it. But it turns out that both in ancient systems like Ayurveda and Chinese medicine, they really understood that your hormones start to change in your 20s, especially around 28 in Chinese medicine. And the same is true with cutting edge science. We know that you start to lose your testosterone, your DHEA, starting in your 20s. And this is important for both men and women. You know, for men, if you are, if you're becoming burnt toast and you're pushing too hard and you're traveling a lot and not sleeping because that's when the repair happens, then you are going to start to fall down a hormonal flight of stairs. You're going to start taking those baby steps toward andropause. Andropause is that slow decline of testosterone that a lot of men start to notice in their 40s, like anytime between 40 and 70. It's what I affectionately call the grumpy old man syndrome. So we want to prevent that. We want to prevent that. Growth hormone starts to change in her 30s. For women, estrogen and progesterone starts to change around 35 to 45. So there's many changes that you can be proactive about. How do you do that? Well, so you want a base case. That's kind of a principle from lead that you kindly mentioned my husband developed. And it's really important if you want to up level your health, if you want to change being driven by your adrenals and by bad stress into the grace of being able to work in your prefrontal cortex of your brain, you know, that higher brain, you got to do it by doing the base case. And then as you figure out what your issues are, you know what I find, as I mentioned, is that about 91% of people are struggling with cortisol, and that is especially true for entrepreneurs. There's a few exceptions out there, not many of them. When you are struggling with cortisol. I want to give you a couple of practical tips here. I want to give you A new cocktail. A lot of people who struggle with cortisol are like me in my 30s and love to pour a glass of wine or two at night. And it turns out that the very thing you think you're getting from your cocktail or your glass of wine, it's robbing from you because it raises your cortisol. A lot of people drink because they think it's going to help them transition. And it actually slows down your metabolism, the rate at which you burn calories, especially in women, it disrupts your sleep. You may fall asleep more easily, but you're going to not get good quality sleep, the kind that you need for that full repair conversation with your body every night. And that has a beginning, a middle, and an end. And a lot of people don't have that full conversation because they've had too much alcohol, too much for their body. It also, in women can make estrogen backflip into a bad estrogen that increases their risk of breast cancer. And here's the shocking part. Only 3 to 6 servings a week can increase your risk of breast cancer as a woman. So here's your new cocktail. I like to always offer an alternative. It's kind of a basic parenting principle. I'm going to bring it in here, too. So here's your new cocktail. I think it's really important to take something called phosphatidylserine. If you're an entrepreneur, you need to be on PS Phosphatidylserine. And I'll spell it for you if you'd like. It's P H O S P H A T I D Y L S E R I, N E. This is a lovely little extract of a cell membrane and it's been shown in randomized trials. So best evidence to lower your cortisol level and get it into that Goldilocks position. What it does is it actually improves your mood. So it's a really simple supplement that you can start taking. This is one of the cocktails that I think is so important when it comes to cortisol and being an entrepreneur. Another quick one that I'm going to give you is omega 3s. Most of us know that omega 3s, fish oil or vegetarian source are important, and yet it's on the shelf, right? It's like on the shelf in the refrigerator. We're not taking it every day. I want you to get religious about omega 3s.
Gotcha. Dean, are you going to follow this advice? I just want to make sure because.
Well, you know, it's very interesting because it's so in alignment. I mean, you know, there is something about, like I said, it seems like there's like a lot of men and some even guys that I talk to are. It doesn't even cross their mind to check their hormones, you know, because they think, again, that's for menopausal women or whatever. But you know, it's just a fact. As you get older, it doesn't have anything to do with your masculinity or your. And not knowing doesn't make it better. It's just a fact. If you're in your 40s and you've gained weight just without even getting tested, it's pretty clear that your testosterone is low and your estrogen is high. And that's just a fact. That's just the way it happens. You don't even really need to get tested for that. There's evidence right there. These things can all be brought back into balance.
Yeah, you know, let's do this. And I'm going to let Renee actually parlay this one too. I'm sure she has other things to ask, but I want to, you know. Well, let me say this first, let me preface this. You know, in the classic book which many people have read, Think and Grow Rich, there's the chapter on sex transmutation, why most men are successful after the age of 40. And I'm probably not saying this maybe the way Napoleon Hill exactly meant it, but I think it's semi accurate. Is that the reason most men are successful after the age of 40 is because they take all this pent up sexual energy and they redirect it more intelligently towards business. So there's a lot that could be said about sex and the drive or the lack of drive and I know so much of this. So if we can't like get someone's attention, I'm a big believer in sell people what they want, give them what they need sort of thing. That's the ethical way to actually deliver stuff to people that when they don't want it, it's sort of maybe the theory behind Flintstone vitamins or something, make it taste good, maybe you can get the kid to eat a vitamin sort of thing is if you can't get someone's attention with, oh, you're going to feel better, you're going to be more performing, you start talking about, oh, you're not going to be able to have, you know, enjoyable sex or whatever. And I know so much of this. So Renee, I'd rather you ask the question. Okay, I'm Sort of kind of going into it, and I just. And I'm putting her on the spot because I think it's more amusing and funny than anything else. So. Yeah.
Okay.
Well, thank you for sharing your question with me to interpret in a way that will make you sound more intelligent.
Whenever I ask it.
Well, okay, let me try to actually weave in what my original question was, because I think maybe what you're saying, and I think this actually kind of relates back to what I was communicating earlier and giving kudos to Sarah for her kind of fun phraseology around all of this. The giving people what they want and selling them what they need. Maybe what you're saying is that for some people, just this idea maybe, of feeling better is not going to be a high enough driver for them, but certainly maybe the knowledge that they will look sexier for a longer amount of time or that they will be able to attract sexier partners because of the way that they look might be. Might be something that can be a driver for them. I'm just gonna say that maybe that's what was going on in your head, but I'm gonna weave it back around to Sarah, what my. My question was around this andropause and the perimenopause. I'm just wondering what your opinion is, because I'm. I'm kind of suspecting, if I'm. If I'm cluing into this correctly, that maybe in the past that those particular issues were coming up later in life, like in the late 30s, early 40s, moving into the 50s. But do you feel like right now, with the amount of environmental toxicity and also with just, like, the general way our diets are and how we treat our bodies, and in some cases, actually people even, you know, over exercising, but like the drinking of the coffee, you know, all the toxins that are in the environment, are those type of things influencing the onset of, like, the andropause and the perimenopause so that it can start, I guess, coming up sooner in life rather than later.
Yeah, great question. I think it's important to look at what determines whether you're at risk for andropause or maybe early perimenopause, which is that period of time between 35 and 50 for a woman, the years before your final menstrual period. What we're talking about here is your risk of having these problems is definitely genetic, put together with your environmental exposures. And when I say environmental exposures, I'm including endocrine disruptors, which we are all in Contact with all the time. Everything from bisphenol A in lining the cans of food that we eat to mercury. Mercury affects both your estrogen balance and also your thyroid. I was mercury toxic in my 30s because I had a fondness for sashimi and I had a Japanese restaurant that was near my office. So these are definitely issues that we're facing. And I'm glad that you played the vanity card. I think we should just talk about vanity for a moment because you're right that it's not just going to make you feel better. I mean, the cool part is, with some of these suggestions I've given you already, we've talked about number one, biohacking, and taking my quiz. Number two, phosphatidylserine. The cool part about phosphatidylserine is you will feel better within one hour of taking 400 milligrams of phosphatidylserine. It's that fast. We also talked about Omega 3s. The cool part about these things is that they help you play the vanity card so they actually get you to have fewer wrinkles. Cortisol in both men and women affects your skin. And the collagen in your skin, the collagen. For the guys who don't know, most women know about collagen. The collagen is kind of like the girding of your skin. It's like what sort of keeps it from getting saggy and droopy. And so if you want to look sexier longer, these things are going to help you with that as well. Because your skin, Renee, I think you'll like this one. Your skin is a mirror of your mind. And I'm not just talking about vanity for vanity's sake. I'm talking about the way your skin looks. You know, the white of your eyes, the light in your eyes, you know, kind of how much energy you have just by looking into someone's eyes. Those things are determined by these same hormones that we've been talking about. Cortisol, estrogen, thyroid in women, cortisol, testosterone, thyroid in men. And Dean, as you were describing, that ratio between testosterone and estrogen is so important in men, just as the ratio between estrogen and progesterone is so important in women. I want to give you another one here. Since Joe brought up sex in the Napoleon Hill, imagine that.
Listen, we could be talking about autoresponders and joking about sex.
Hey, honestly, don't say this in all seriousness. Sex is a great thing, and it can be a very bad thing. Bad thing in Terms of you can't do it healthy and other things is obsessive. This too, because I actually have interviewed the top doctor in the world on sex addiction too. So I've done some very fascinating interviews related to sex. And it's one of those things where most people feel uncomfortable talking about it, but it's always the elephant in the room.
Well, honestly, I won't shut up about sex, so you'll have to rein me in here. But I think it's so important to realize that with all of the issues that we're talking about with your hormones, with your happy brain chemicals, with sex, we want, you know, you've heard this mantra that I keep saying of not too high, not too low. Same thing applies when it comes to sex. I don't want you to be under dosed on sex. I don't want you to be overdosed on it. I want you to have just the right amount of orgasm. I'm going to take some tea again.
Get your mouth all dry.
Sorry, that was.
Now brace yourself. Brace yourself deep. She said orgasm.
Okay, so just this is like. No, this is important because after dark. Yeah, here we go.
Exactly, Exactly. Sorry, I think a lot of people right on the edge there. So.
Yeah, exactly. You got us all like we're waiting. Okay.
Did she just say orgasm? She did, yes.
Let's hear it.
Yeah. So we're doing these five ways that you can turn the cost of being a badass into major roi. And next up is orgasm. So orgasm is one of the best ways to amplify the intelligence of your body and to get your hormones working for you, not against you. Here's what happens. Orgasm lowers your cortisol. It makes your thyroid more efficient. It helps to get your estrogen into balance and it raises your testosterone. How cool is that? It's like a four for one. So you've got to get the right dose of orgasm. Very important. And I'm not talking about the one minute climactic sneeze for men or women. I'm talking about spend some time. Spend some time.
I'm trying to think of the bullet point right now.
I do. Sarah, I love that we're bringing this up because obviously orgasms are so energetic. And I don't think a lot of people realize the healing need nature behind what you're saying, like the proper balance of orgasm. So you know, in, in the one way that it can be really energetic. Correct me if I'm wrong. Is there, you know, some sort of life force and essence? You know also that you can be kind of dipping into that bank in orgasm. And is that why you suggest like this balanced dosage? Can you like be overusing your life?
Well, that's a great question, Renee. And we could definitely have a long conversation about this. Let me just try to give you a couple of headlines here. I find that for both men and women, we want to get smarter about managing sexual energy. Because it turns out that just as you're describing, Renee, sexual energy is a portal to kind of the fuller version of your energy. So I say that because I think when you really are in right relationship with your sexuality, it's one of the ways that you can really keep your energy tank full. And what we're talking about here with entrepreneurs, even though I'm making some jokes about orgasm and sex, we're talking about just checking in right now. And you can even do this for a moment. You know, you can keep your eyes open if that freaks you out, to close them. Or you could close them and just notice, okay, where is my energy right now? Like if you had a fuel gauge and you had to measure where your energy tank is right now, and to do it most effectively, it's probably best to close your eyes and just like get a sense of how much energy you have in your tank. Is it full? Are you at half a tank? Are you running on fumes? So we want to get a sense of your base case. And what I want for you is to be able to give from overflow so that your tank is always full so that you Never fall below 3/4. I think that's really important. You know, when we talk about people flying a lot, I know that's true for, for many entrepreneurs. Joe, I know you're heading off next week to go to Necker Island. So I think it's really important to know that when you fly, you have about 3x the energy cost of when you're just living your day to day life kind of closer to the ground. So when it comes to. I am getting to the point that you asked about Renee, I guess it wasn't more. It wasn't just headlines here, but especially for women, I think it's important that we realize the central role of orgasm. And I think for both men and women, but especially for women, there's a way that you can fill your energy tank with orgasm. So that's my tip number four, Number five is master your sleep. You sort of got that from me already.
You know what? No, that's really good. I actually thought the last, last thing you said about Close your eyes and measure your energy level, because I was sitting here even doing that as you were saying it. And if you were driving, listening to this, not a good idea if you close your eyes. But that being said, I think just having people calibrate and kind of check in is really important. And if you actually did do that, then you kind of have an idea of how you feel and how important this discussion has been. This is such an important topic that all we can do on this episode is plant a seed and hope that it resonated with our listeners, that it made them think about things that they have either never thought about or have thought about, maybe in a different way to give them a different paradigm. And so what I'd like to do now, Sarah, aside from just thanking you for taking the time to share what you know with us, is to any famous last words, any final recommendations, and then info on your book and anything else you'd like to share that would allow our listeners to take what we've discussed today and improve their lives with it.
Well, I hope that as you have listened to us today, I hope that you've laughed a bit because that's one of the best ways to get cortisol into balance. Listening to music also does that. I want to give you a sense of the baby steps, you know, the small things you can do that really up level your neurohormonal dashboard. They get your hormones into balance regardless of age. I don't want you to. I don't want you to come away from this call with us thinking that it's some gigantic project, because it's not. We're talking about really small steps. I kind of went through taking the quiz. Phosphatidylserine, omega 3s, orgasm, mastering your sleep. These are small steps that you can take that dramatically improve your hormone balance whether you're male or female. So I think they're especially important for the entrepreneur. I've got a sweet place in my heart for the entrepreneur. And maybe if I have to give a final word here, I would say, speaking of the heart, that a lot of folks think the brain is in charge. Renee, you sort of talked about this, that, you know, the brain sort of tells your adrenals what to do. That's called the HPA, the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis. I've actually found, after 20 years of studying these things obsessively, that the heart tells the brain, which then tells the adrenals what to do. And the more that you live from Your heart. And that can be something as simple as just inhaling into your heart, putting your hand over your heart, and closing your eyes again, don't do that. If you're driving, inhaling into your heart, just imagining that you're taking in your breath through your heart, and then exhaling from your heart out into the world, your blessings into the world. I know that starts to sound a little woo, woo, and maybe your eyes are glazing over, but this actually has been shown to lower cortisol by 23% and raise your DHEA, raise your androgens. It helps to reverse that, you know, that tendency toward andropause. So if I had to give one final thing, I would say live from your heart, both physically and metaphorically.
Awesome. Awesome. Thank you, Sarah.
Or.
Well, I'll come back to Sarah in a moment. Dean or Renee, Anything you guys want to say ad before we wrap up here?
Thanks so much, Sarah. It's been great, I think. And I mean, I would encourage everybody, even guys, especially to take this stuff seriously. I can say from personal experience that this really is a easy button to getting more energy. It's like putting your. I think the way I described it when going through this experience is that just through not even paying attention to it without you even noticing, it's almost like as you get into your 40s, that you're kind of moving on a moving sidewalk that's moving in the opposite direction. And if you kind of get everything in line and get like Sarah was saying, the three amigos working in your favor, it's like turning that moving sidewalk so that it's moving in the right direction and you kind of accelerate rather than feel like you have to work harder just to stay in one place. So I would encourage all the guys to take it seriously. Go ahead and look at it.
I definitely echo what you just said, Dean. I think that it can be a real easy button for people. I think it's just kind of, you know, having the awareness and opening the door. And I really want to applaud you, Sarah, for making this your life's work. I truly believe, also from personal experience, that, you know, I mean, you're really onto something here. And getting in better adrenal and hormone balance for me in the past was a real integral part of my own healing process. And I personally look forward to, you know, continuing this journey on, you know, with you and you helping me get even more healthy and more imbalanced. So thank you for everything that you're doing for entrepreneurs and all of the other people out there, out there in the world that you are helping.
And what I will wrap up with is, you know, again, Dr. Sarah Gottfried, G O T T F R I E D. Her book is the Hormone Cure. It goes through the whole Gottfried protocol, which she created. And the website is thehormonecurebook.com and like I'd mentioned, we're also going to put a link up on ilovemarketing.com where you can actually go and go through her system. And that's not an affiliate thing where me and Dean are trying to set something up and pitch it to you because we don't want a penny out of any of the things. We just want to help make our listeners better and more effective. And then down the road they will just love what we are doing and they will give us a bunch of money for other things like marketing stuff. But beyond that. So that's it. Sarah, any other places that you recommend or things that they do, any other websites you want to share or stuff from you and then if not, we'll let our listeners go do their thing and become superhuman.
Well, I just wanted to express my gratitude. We, we know that as entrepreneurs are trying to transmute cost into ROI of being a badass, I think it's so important to amplify those positive emotions. I'm sure you've heard that before, but I just feel a ton of gratitude to you, Joe Polish, to Renee, to Dean, to our listeners, thank you so much for tuning in today. It means the world to me. And when you really feel those positive emotions, gratitude, forgiveness, love, connection, that is the best repair ever. It's the best repair ever. It's much more effective than just trying to feel calm. So go for the positive emotions. That's my final thing. And just a huge thank you to all of you.
You are welcome. And thank you. And to all our listeners, please give us your comments@ilovemarketing.com and this is definitely one of those episodes where you have someone in your life that you can think of that would really be well served to hear it. So please share this link, this episode with any of your listeners and go get her book because I think it'll perhaps change your life in many ways and you'll know that if this resonates with you by listening, if you've listened all the way up to this point. So thanks everyone and we will see you next time on ilovemarketing.com.
Thanks.
