The Hierarchy of Ecosystem Function

PDF · 14 Jul 2026

In this essay John D. Liu argues that the world’s concurrent financial and environmental crises are symptoms of a single, hierarchical cascade of ecosystem dysfunction that began with biodiversity loss and propagated through reductions in biomass, soil organic matter (necromass), soil stability, nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration, and hydrological regulation. Each step in the cascade creates predictable downstream outcomes such as erosion, desertification, food insecurity, poverty, and climate change. Liu contends that understanding this hierarchy reveals the root causes of many global problems and provides a roadmap for large‑scale physical restoration: by restoring rainfall infiltration and retention, soil health, biodiversity, and biomass, the cascade can be reversed, re‑establishing carbon storage and ecosystem services. He links the same systemic blind‑spots to the contemporary financial crisis, warning that policies that ignore ecosystem fundamentals are fundamentally flawed. The essay calls for policymakers, development actors, and the public to adopt this hierarchical perspective, prioritize restoration of primary ecosystem functions, and make the knowledge common to avoid catastrophic outcomes.
