Can Christians Command Angels?

John Humenik examines whether Christians can command angels, arguing they're ministering spirits sent to serve believers, not personal servants. He cites Hebrews 1:14 and Psalm 103:20, shares two deliverance experiences where prayer for angelic help appeared answered, and emphasizes any such activity must align with God's will.

Hello, my name is John Humenik. Welcome back to the channel. I got an exciting video for you today because we're going to be covering the topic that is, can angels be commanded by Christians? Now what we're going to be doing is reacting to a video that Pastor Vlad put together a few years ago in the context of some of the things that he's found in his studies. But I also want to relate it back to some of the experiences I had Recently and try to piece together what Christians can and can't do. Let's go ahead to the video.
It's a common practice among especially charismatics and Pentecostals to dispatch angels, to send angels, to command angels, to tell angels what to do, as though angels are employed and they are on a salary and they are our servants. We will answer that in just a moment. First of all, angels are spiritual beings who assist God, especially in his work of salvation. Conveying his word to human beings and attending to their needs.
One of the big aspects of Pastor Vlad's video is it really is broken up into 3 areas, and those 3 areas cover whether or not you can actually dispatch angels from heaven directly. Can you command them or even tell them what to do? So what he's doing is, is he's going back and researching all the different Bible verses that talk about angelic beings and the different ways Christians could potentially interact with them. So this video talks about those things and what he's found through his research.
The foundational verse that I want to share with you that gets misunderstood in a lot of circles and gives people almost like this green light to begin to tell angels what to do and feel like angels belong to us and that we can command them is this: Hebrews chapter 1, verse 14. Now Hebrews chapter 1 deals with Jesus being superior to angels. And then it gives that explanation of really what angels are supposed to do, and it says the following: Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation? I want you to notice that angels are ministers of God, not of us. They are ministers to us. They are not ministers of us. In other words, angels work on behalf of our salvation, but they do not work for us. They work on our behalf, but they do not work at our command.
So we're actually going to talk about that one specific aspect about the command versus calling angels or actually telling them what to do. I want you to listen a little bit more about what Pastor Vlad has to say on the topic before we go into a deeper dive. But this is the specific nuance that I want to go a little bit deeper on because I come into agreement with basically everything he says with the video, except there's a nuance here that I wanted to talk about. But let's go ahead, listen to what else he has to say, and then we can kind of dive a little bit deeper.
As we will look at following verses in the Bible, you will not see one reference in the Bible where men were commanding angels or where men were instructed by God to decree and tell angels what to do.
So I want to hop over to the scriptures because I start to see an interesting thread that wasn't specifically described in Pastor Vlad's video that really makes me wonder a couple things specifically about the capabilities of the Christian and how it applies to the scenario that we're talking about. So the first verse I want to cover is Psalm 103, verse 20. It reads, bless affectionately, gratefully praise the Lord, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his commandments, hearkening to the voice of his word. Now it's interesting when you understand this verse a little bit because it clearly talks about where the angelic guard stands in the kingdom of light, and that is, is they are God's servants. They are the ones that are ministering spirits to go out into the world to do God's will. And that's clear. We see it happen throughout the Bible over and over again. I don't think anyone is going to debate that, but I want you to notice the last part of that sentence there which says hearkening to the voice of his word. Now, who is the voice of his word? Is it the Bible? No, really, that's the written word. That's not the voice. That's technically the Logos word, which when you understand the nuances— but the voice of his word is those who speak it, and those are Christians. And so God was walking me through this process, kind of unveiling one piece, one part at a time, that he says that this is an interesting aspect because The Christians are his voice. We're the ones that go out into the world and speak the word of God to the people. And that's an interesting thing. But it doesn't stop there. Let's continue. Hebrews 1:14, and described, are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who inherit salvation? Now, when you study this a little further, you start to recognize, okay, The ministering spirits, the angels, are designed to serve those who inherit salvation. But what we see in scripture is not a single instance in which a Christian, regardless it was Jesus or otherwise, or even a Jewish person commanding angels to do something. We know there isn't any, at least not something that's direct. But what we have is inferences that we want to talk about here further. So let's go a little bit further, because if they're meant to serve us. What does that mean? Does it mean, are they serving us through God's command, or are they serving Christians directly? And again, without scriptures to back it up, we've got to— we kind of have to look a little further. But I want you to study this a little further, and let's hop over to Matthew 26:53. This is from the NASB, and it says, or do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father? This is Jesus speaking. And he will at once put at my disposal More than 12 legions of angels. Now, this is an interesting aspect because— so let's take one step back and then go step forward. We know in the garden that Jesus is there and he says a prayer before the Roman legion comes up, and he says very clearly, he says, Father, I want you to take this cup away, but not my will, but your will be done. So this is interesting because what we see here is Jesus basically battling the flesh and winning that battle in the garden. And then he comes to this situation where the Romans come and he makes this statement. He goes, can I not appeal to my Father who will at once put at my disposal 12 legions? Now when you study the word disposal and really go into it, because you actually have to go into the Interlinear Bible to study the Greek word, because the Greek word is actually parsimmony. And it means to present as a gift or to stand beside. And it also does mean disposal. Now, when I start to read and understand this, I'm like, okay, what does this really mean? Because we understand that whatever Jesus does, we can do here on earth. There's no dis— there's no difference here. We know that because God's a respecter of no persons. That's very clear. We know that we're seated in Christ, so the authority is in Christ, but we can operate through Christ for God's kingdom. So when you start to see this, you see this word disposal, and it has, uh, this deeper meaning. So Jesus was basically saying in this moment, he's basically saying, look, I could have asked my Father to put in an army at his command for the work that God has in my life. And so remember, Jesus at this point is still God, yet he is man. And so he can say, look, I could have brought an end to this battle long before it started, because he does say in the next verse, he goes, Well, then how would the scriptures be fulfilled? Now, the interesting part of this is, is you've got this situation brewing here. We have this part where we see God clearly saying, look, I can, I can go to my Father and bring an angelic guard and basically stop this, this rebellion against him. He wasn't rebelling against Rome, but Rome was rebelling against him. It's an interesting context, but it's actually true, and put an end to it. But it doesn't happen because obviously he needed to go to the cross and redeem us of all of our sins. But the thing about it is, is that can Christians command an angelic army once they've received it? Again, there's really no scriptures that directly show that, but it does infer that with this scripture, but without directly saying it. So the question is, does that happen? So what you start to see is you start to understand, okay, Now, why is it the angelic army is at his disposal? Why is it— why is it that Jesus can say, why would they come as a gift to me to stand by me if it— if they were going to maintain authority or control through the Father? Is that what Jesus was referring to, that he has to ask the Father to then instruct them? That's not clear. But what we start to see is, is that I had some 2 experiences recently That change what we see here. Because what we see here is you got to go back to Psalm 103:20, because the angels hearken to the voice of the word of God. And we know that we talked about that's Christians. But so if that's the case, what does that really mean? So what you see here in deliverance ministries is a lot of ministers talking about controlling or even commanding angels. In the context of deliverance ministries. But I actually had an experience that I was trying to, trying to correlate back to the Bible. And you hear a lot of biblical teachers talk about that experience can't usurp the Bible, but your experience can be validated by the Bible, therefore showing that it's true. I had a situation where we were in a deliverance situation where there was a person who had manifested a legion of demons. And that person was violent and just trying to injure themselves. Actually, the demons were trying to injure the person by slamming that person's head into the ground. And the lead pastor that was overseeing it made this statement, and it came to pass when I saw this was unbelievable. He says, thank you, Father, for sending your angelic hosts to come and stand this person Straight up. Instantly, that person stands straight up, gets up off the ground, stands up, and doesn't move for the entire deliverance session. And so I'm wondering, I'm like, okay, we have these scriptures, we have this statement that follows exactly what Jesus said in Matthew, but it doesn't correlate directly to what he had said because Jesus didn't command the angels. Because had he done it, obviously, you know, the history would be different. But yet that had occurred. And so I'm trying to wonder, I'm like, okay, can Christians command the angels through the word of God on their life? Are they the voice of God in this instance? But it's what, what is those scenarios? And then I recently had another scenario where I had been going through this process. And what happened was, is I had asked the Father the same thing. I had been wrestling with issues with my sleep and just being attacked pretty consistently at 6 o'clock in the morning and could not get to the root of the problem. And so I asked the Father, I said, thank you, Father, for sending your angelic guard here to watch over my sleep. And, and I said, angelic guard, in accordance to Psalm 4, verse 8, it says that God protects my sleep. So I need you to go out there and make sure that whatever tries to interrupt my sleep doesn't come to pass. That's basically what occurred. And that night and every night since then, there had been no issues. So what I start to understand is, is then I went into my prayer closet and I started asking God, like, everyone teaches these different situations where it says pretty much you cannot command the angelic army. Very clearly you can't dispatch them. Very clearly they will not obey your commands in the sense of just randomly going to do things. But there's this specific way that has manifested itself in scripture, but it wasn't fully baked through. But now we've seen twice in my life where I'm like, I can't correlate this directly to scripture. So how do we do this? How do we then reconcile my experience with the Bible? Well, it has to go back to Psalm 103, verse 20, because in that scripture, we start to understand what it really is saying, because it says hearkening to the voice of God. Let me reread the whole thing. Bless the Lord, you angels, you mighty ones who do his commandments, hearkening to the voice of his word. So what I'm starting to see in this theme, because it says it again in Hebrews, are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who inherit salvation? Well, it doesn't say serve God; it says those who will have salvation. So we have two verses that talk about Christians. But what does it really mean in the context of what Jesus talked about in Matthew 26, verses 53 and then ultimately 54? What I'm starting to see is this thread that it is very specific situations that you can call upon an angelic army. That's very clear. No one will debate that. That's scripture. That's verse 53. 23 and Matthew 26. But now at that point, you have the potential to be able to voice the word of God on your life and speak it and have that come to pass. There's just too many situations that I have seen already in which that had occurred. But what it really means is that they're not at your disposal for you to do whatever you want, because remember, the angels will not sin before God. So if they're going to do something that is not aligned with God's will, it's not going to happen. Because that's what happened to all the other angels that get kicked out of God's presence. Redemption of blood by Jesus Christ does not apply to the spiritual beings, the angels. If that's how it is, there is no salvation for the devil and his fallen angels. They're just— they're condemned for all eternity. So what I'm not saying that, but what I'm seeing is this consistent thread where there is the ability for you to speak the word of God over your life and then have the angelic guard, the angelic hosts Go forth and, and do that work. And so I'm curious from your perspective, you know, this is again a touchy topic, and I'm not saying this is something that's been fully fleshed out. It is a topic that deserves much more conversation, a lot more study, and it does— we have to be able to understand with respect what God is trying to accomplish here. But I do think when you start to understand how things will work in post-salvation, that there's an element here that we're missing because in the post-salvation, we will be— we will have authority over spiritual beings. It talks about that later in, uh, in Paul's letters. And so does that mean angels in, um, the new— the, the new time, the new earth, and all of the things that are going on with the new heaven? Is the scriptures really referring to fallen angels and demons? We know we have authority over them. That's very, very clear throughout your scriptures. So I'm interested in your comments. Go ahead and put into the comments below in this video what you think might actually be the case. What are your thoughts on my experience? What are your thoughts in this situation? I haven't fully flushed out this situation. I have a stance that I'm going through and experiencing, and it will walk out, and we'll probably talk about it in the future how things go. And I'm curious to see your experience here because I understand with respect Respect what God is trying to accomplish. But at the same time, we do know that God is the commander of angel armies. We do know that, and that they do hearken to his word, and they do hearken to his voice because he has done that. We see it over and over in scripture. We see the angel saving Lot. We see the angel of the Lord with Moses. We just see it over and over again. We see the ministering spirits with— you got Paul within his situation before he shipwrecked on Malta. Peter getting out of jail, Peter at Joppa. Like, there's all these different situations that are occurring. But when you look at it the way I described it, it starts to formulate how Elisha had an army at his disposal. He had an army as the Arminians are coming to capture him. There's an army there. So again, it did not say that Elisha called down the army and then commanded it. Clearly he didn't because he blinded the Arminians with his voice. But it's interesting to start to stitch together these elements and to dig deeper into the scriptures to see if there's an aspect of doctrine that we've just truly missed because we just not did the work that we were supposed to do. Because remember, God says that it is the glory to him to conceal a matter. It is the glory of kings, which are us, the, the sons and daughters of God, to to seek a matter out. And so it's important for us to research these things, come to our own conclusions, and understand how to walk this life out. Because at the end of the day, we are in a spiritual battle. We know the Holy Spirit is all-powerful. There's nothing that can replace him. And that this is not about replacing him, but rather understanding how the dominion and actual hierarchy of heaven operates and correlate that with the scriptures to know when God wants you to use the things he's empowered you to have. And that's the key part, is, is that God has given us a skill set in gifts and anointing and other things and graces, but he also gave us tools. He gave us tools through people and relationship. He's given us money. And if these angelic beings are supposed to be a part of this process in which we can command them Okay, we have to understand what that means, what context that can be used in, and how respectfully to move forward. And we have to match it to scripture. At the end of the day, we've got to confirm it through scripture because our experience has to match scripture. And if it doesn't, we've got to understand, is— did we misinterpret our experience and what actually occurred, or did we misinterpret scripture and doesn't match that? So at the end of the day, could have been very clearly The request could have been put up to heaven and the Holy Spirit did the work and not the angels. That's very possible. So we can't discount that, but we also have to respect God to understand if the angels are there and they are available for us, what does that really mean for Christians and how can we operate through the kingdom to respect our Father, to move his kingdom forward and advance it here on earth?
