Can Christian's Cry?

John Humenik argues that Christians should express emotions freely, but Scripture must guide them. He points to Jesus weeping at Lazarus' tomb and praying in Gethsemane as proof that strong feelings don't contradict faith, and warns against making emotions an idol or suppressing them based on gender stereotypes.

And if you have someone who is struggling with all forms of emotional distress, or even some form of spiritual oppression, please share this video with them because I know it's going to bless them in a big way. Today's topic is to truly understand the nuances between emotions and the Word of God and how it applies to your daily life and how to walk things out in a proper and almost succinct way possible. The reason being is, is that a lot of Christians have grown up, especially men, that their emotions are meant to be suppressed. Women are overly emotional, at least that the world says, and the men are supposed to suppress their emotions. But the reality is, is when you understand how Jesus operated on this earth, there's a balance between earthly emotions and applying the word of God and moving forward in a kingdom principle, in kingdom mindset that allows you to be set free. This is extremely important because the— in order for you to receive the fullness of life that God has for you on this side of eternity, you must be able to express yourself properly through healthy emotions, as well as applying the word of God on your life through those emotions and those moments that could potentially be traumatic or difficult for you, especially in the case of a loved one or divorce or some loss in that case. So let's go ahead and dive into these scriptures and to understand the nuances, as understood, understand how Jesus did his work and how he was able to approach things with the proper authority and grace through mercy. So let's look at the Garden of Gethsemane. We know that at the Garden of Gethsemane, that was the night before Jesus's trial and crucifixion. We know that during the garden, that he was stressed beyond belief, that he ended up bleeding through his sweat so profusely 'cause the stress had been so great upon him. We know that during the garden, he asked his Father to take the cup away from him. We know that he asked his Father continually as he went back into prayer over and over again. He even implored his apostles, his disciples at that time, to stay up and pray with him, but they just kept falling asleep. And throughout this process, we even see that when the Romans and the Jewish authorities came to arrest Jesus, think about this situation. They came to arrest him, and Jesus makes this bold statement that says, could I not ask my Father for legions of angels to come and defend me? But since this is not my world but your world, let his will be done. And you start to see that the emotions of that moment were incredible. The sweating of the blood, The, the passing of the cup, or at least the attempt to, and then the talking about the angelic army. When you start to put all of these things together, you're starting to see that Jesus experienced a tremendous range of emotions. Go, let's fast— let's actually rewind a week and go back to whenever you see Palm Sunday, which is the triumphant return into Jerusalem. Just before that, He resurrected Lazarus, and in that moment leading up to that, in that, that amazing experience, he wept. Now think about all the things that just went on in his life. He knows he's going on to glory. He knows he's going to be victorious. He knows he's going to face the, the cross, the thorns, the, the splinters on the cross, the nails in his hand, his feet, the spear in his side. And yet Jesus went through that entire experience focused and true to the word of God. This is the essence of what we're here to talk about today, is, is that healthy emotions are meant to be expressed through Christians in a proper way, but your emotions are not supposed to supplant the word of God. This is a key thing because if you are experiencing distress in your life, There is an aspect in which God wants you to go through and allow those emotions to run their course, especially in the sense of a loved one, maybe in the sense of a wedding, maybe even a divorce. There's aspects of these things that occur that need to be a part of your physical well-being because otherwise you'll carry it, and vice versa. You should not be in a situation where you're carrying your emotions. over and over again, allowing them to dictate your choices because that's the opposite side and therefore it's unhealthy too because now you're actually making your emotions an idol. So this is really important as you start to emulate Christ and you start to walk out a more mature life. How do you then take these balance? How do you then apply the word of God on your life? How do you then do these things and understand all the elements that Jesus wants for you in this lifetime? but emulate them properly? Well, you can look at Romans, you can look at the John, uh, the Gospel of John, you can look at all these different scriptures— Corinthians, Ephesians. What you see here is that the word of God trumps your emotions. Look at 1 Corinthians 13, the love chapter, where it talks about love is kind, love is patient, love is trusting. It's not one that envies, it doesn't boast. When you start to recognize that these emotions are a part of your well-being, that you start to understand is, is that the word of God becomes bumper pads on your walk of life. It allows you to work through these situations, allowing you to unload the burdens, whether they're good burdens or even bad burdens. Because remember, there's aspects where your emotional highs, like an adrenaline rush— and those people can get addicted to those things That they can become problematic. So it can be good, like these overly good and these overly explosive moments, as well as these really terrible lows that become lingering problems that last a lifetime. God wants you to walk through life in victory through the scriptures. But you have to understand is, is that when you are now applying the situations of life that are going on on a day-to-day basis, What you have to recognize is very clearly is is that he wants you to experience them, but he does not want you to sin. He does not want to make your emotions an idol where you then take that situation. You say because I don't feel good, I'm going to treat this person poorly, or I'm not. I'm tired and I don't want to do that work. Whenever Jesus went up to the well that was Jacob's well, that was ultimately actually Joseph's well, and he met. The Samaritan, the woman from Samaria there. What did he see? He saw that she was there, but it was at noon and it was tiring. It was hot and it was exhausting, and he was hungry and he was tired. But yet he did not allow that situation to detract from him this beautiful moment of prophetic evangelism, which he then instilled in her, where he told her about her life, about her Past 5 husbands, the current one, which is the one that she's living with but is not her husband, but rather Jesus becomes the 7th spouse in this beautiful story. And then she runs off and tells everyone in the city. He doesn't even have to perform miracles. It was just her word carrying forth this beautiful evangelistic ministry. Really, when we probably see from the perspective of Jesus's ministry timeline, it's probably the first Major one that saves this entire town, and it's done through the fact that he pushed through his emotions, his tiredness. So when you understand and apply the word of God in your life, you may not like the things that God is asking you to do in that moment. You may not want to trust someone. You may not want to show kindness. You may not want to show patience. You may not want to show the goodness of God. You may not want to experience those emotions because you're struggling with something that's inside. Maybe your body's in pain. Maybe you're physically tired, mentally tired. Maybe you're spiritually exhausted. The core part of what God wants you to do is he wants you to walk through the emotions that you're experiencing. Make sure that you're resting and balancing the work that God has for you in front of you, and then allow the word of God to be applied properly in your life, in the situations as you're interacting with yourself and others. And allow the word of God to have the final say. This is so important when you understand that it's important to apply the emotions, walk through them, let the highs be highs, let the lows be lows, but come back and get reset to those moments where God can then minister to you. Get in the presence of God. Make sure you're communing with Jesus. Make sure you're hearing his heart. He'll pour into you. He'll bless you. He'll allow all of these experiences to come to pass and allow them to settle and be put on that sacrificial altar. where then he can take care of it, and then he'll reset you, and then you can apply the word of God on your life. This is so important when you understand is when you're in distress, when you're being confused, if you're being pressured, these moments of temptation and these moments of stress are designed to cause you to sin, to, to allow your emotions to become an idol, to allow these things that are in front of you to become the problem that manifests into something that's bigger. But God's like, no, I'm greater than all of these things. It's important for you to walk through them like the valley of shadow of death. It doesn't say that David camped in the valley of shadow of death. He said he walked through the valley of shadow of death. And so there are days when in which you may be struggling, where the only thing you can do is take one step forward in the entire day. That's all you're capable of doing, and that's okay. God gets that. There's grace and mercy as a part of this. But what you'll see is, is that each day As you move forward, as the emotions start to get reset and you come back to that neutral center where you're starting to operate, God can continue to bless you and move you forward in bountiful ways. And that's key, because what happens is, is that builds your spiritual muscles, your emotional muscles, and your physical muscles to start to endure these more difficult situations that would have in the past stressed you out. But instead, what it does is it allows you to orient your life on the word of God, on Jesus, to stand on that rock. And when you do and apply the word of God in those moments through habit and it becomes a lifestyle, you'll be able to endure a lot more things that are going on in your life and it'll actually become a non-issue. And then things that continue to, would've normally overwhelmed you, you'll be able to weather properly and move forward. And then you'll become a spiritual anchor For yourself and for others, to bless them through the wisdom and the knowledge that you learned through this emotional journey that God wanted you to experience. God wanted you to walk through it, but he didn't want it to define your actions. And that's the most important thing.
