How to hear the voice of God

In this instructional video, John Humenik explains how Christians can hear God’s voice more clearly. He begins by clarifying that saved believers hear an internal, Spirit‑led voice, whereas audible voices are typically experienced by the unsaved. He then identifies three primary obstacles that block clear communication with God: (1) unrepentant sin, which hinders access to God’s holy presence; (2) insufficient knowledge of Scripture, which prevents believers from recognizing God’s consistent, non‑contradictory messages; and (3) confusion between one’s own inner thoughts and God’s voice. For each obstacle, Humenik offers practical remedies: genuine repentance, deeper and more scholarly Bible study (including original language work), and learning to discern the distinctive qualities of God’s voice—its lack of bass, peaceful tone, non‑condemnatory nature, and identity‑affirming content. He emphasizes humility, obedience, and surrender as essential attitudes for hearing God, and encourages viewers to pursue regular, intentional time in God’s presence. The video concludes with a call to support his ministry via Patreon.

Hi, my name is John Humenik. Welcome to the channel. I know you're gonna love this video. We're gonna be talking today about how to hear the voice of God more clearly and how— what he told me how to do so and unlock the very things he wants you to have in your life. If you know someone who's struggling to hear the voice of God, this is a video for them. Please share it with them. I know they're gonna get some amazing benefits out of it. Now, I wanna set a couple things straight as we start to navigate this situation. When you are a saved Christian, You're not going to hear the audible voice of God because the Holy Spirit lives in you, and you're gonna actually hear an internal voice. If you hear the audible voice of God, that means that that person's not saved, and therefore the Holy Spirit doesn't live within them. Again, we're not in a game of judgment, but I just wanna make sure that we set the standard as we move forward, because when you hear the voice of God, it's audible or internal, and it's audible for the unsaved, and it's internal for the saved. And the reality is, is when you start to hear God's voice, it's actually going to sound the same as mine. Even though it's an internal voice. So when you get into that place where you start to hear God's voice, it's going to actually sound like you're talking to yourself, but done with his love and his tone and the things that he brings. With— this is a very important topic for Christians to recognize, because without hearing the voice of God in your life, you're really going to struggle pretty much across the board. You're gonna be doing the things you think you should be doing, not the things God wants you to do. You're gonna operate in spaces where you're no longer graced, or you may have been graced, but you're gonna be, that grace has been taken from you 'cause he wants you over here. And this, in this season, in this new year, it's so important to be in his presence and hearing his voice. Now, if you're struggling to hear the voice of God, more than likely it's probably 3 things that are keeping you from accomplishing that beautiful conversation and hearing him clearly like I'm hearing, like you're hearing. If you're unable to hear the voice of God, there's gonna be 3 things that are going to block you on a consistent basis and prevent you from hearing God's voice as clearly as you hear me speaking right now. The first one is always going to be sin. It's so important to understand is that you— it's struggling. How could you go before the throne of grace to get additional mercy and grace if you're constantly in a state of unrepentant sin? If you're in unrepentant sin, what will happen is it will block your ability to hear God because God's like, look, I'm a holy God, and in order to come into my presence, you too must be holy. Granted, we all Granted, we are all redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ, and we have all of those things and all of those benefits as part of the kingdom. But the reality is, is if you're living life in sin and you refuse to repent from it and you continue to walk in it, you're not going to hear the voice of God very clearly. It's going to block you because you're going to want to own your own destiny, and you're not going to hear from the one who will tell you, first off, you need to stop doing that. That's really key. Identify the areas in your life where you are still sinning. Identify the areas, if it's unforgiveness, this is a big one that a lot of people get caught in because they don't recognize that they're in unforgiveness. Make sure that you're not being offended by the things that are going on. Don't look at the things from a past perspective. Look at them things from a future kingdom perspective. These are very key and very important. Don't look at the people around you as you see them. Look at them at how God sees them. This is key. When you operate from this position, you're going to start to start to shed the things that are preventing you from hearing God, and that's going to set you free. Make sure you get into a place— there's a difference between unrepentant sin and being caught in sin and being stuck repenting over and over again because you're trying to work through it. That's 2 different situations. You can be in that second situation, although it's not ideal, and moving forward in victory and still hearing the voice of God. But if you're stuck in this previous situation where you're in unrepented sin. Maybe you like to gossip, maybe you like to lie, maybe you like to indulge in food too much, maybe you like to overdrink. There's so many different things that's caught in this world that can kind of drive us to a place that— of sin that keeps us from hearing our Father's voice. Now, the second one is really important, is, is you must understand, if you can't hear God's voice, there's a good chance is, is that you are hearing him, but you don't recognize his voice. This comes from a lack of understanding and education and knowledge in the Bible. This is really important because the Bible says very clearly that Jesus Christ knows his sheep. They hear his voice, they know his voice, and they follow him. So when you understand the word of God intimately, then you can understand when God speaks to you, because God doesn't contradict all the things that are in the Bible. At no point is he going to say something that's going to be spoken to you that will contradict what he wrote in his word. It's— that's just not a part of his nature. So if you're hearing things within your inner person and you're starting to say, hey, that starts to sound more like that Bible verse, there's a really good chance that's God talking to you and not you talking to yourself. It's very important to get into your word, to study the Bible, to dive deep and to know these verses, but not just to read them, but to understand them. When you see how they're— why is there gold in Genesis before the fall? Like, Why is that? They didn't need money before they fell. So why is gold in Genesis? It's a part of the opulence, it's a part of the abundance, it's a part of the overflow. It's a core part of a Christian walk is to be wealthy. You see the same in Genesis. Why are there gold streets? Why are you walking on gold streets? Why would we wanna do that? 'Cause they'll make them dirty, they'll be dusty, but it's gold, it should be treated with respect. See, God's— When you start to study the scripture, God will start to question and challenge the very things that are in your mind, why did God have a treasurer everywhere he went? Because he always operated in abundance. So it's very important to understand that when you see the scriptures, don't look at them from face value, because the reality is the scriptures are a spiritual book that have physical representation. It's not the other way around. It's not a physical book that has a spiritual representation. So when you start to understand the scriptures from a spiritual perspective, you start to recognize why Jesus said that you have to be able to eat his flesh and drink his blood. He didn't talk about it from the way that a lot of religions talk about it being his actual flesh and blood, but rather it's meant as a spiritual connection to tap into the very things that he's feeding you in your spirit in order for you to be sustained through seasons and seasons. That's how his power works. It's a spiritual thing. That's how God works. So when you start to recognize these spiritual concepts through the Bible, you start to realize, wow, I have a deeper understanding of what's going on. And now those things, as from a perspective of his voice, will start to bubble up. and you'll start to recognize him talking to you through his word as it relates to the Bible, because you'll be able to connect the two. That's the essence where a lot of Christians get lost as a part of this conversation, because they can't understand the Bible and they don't do the extra work of studying or going through and getting in a group to just study the Bible deeper, whether it's a small group or even an online study. Bible.com has tons of stuff where you can go back and read the scriptures. You can even ask, what does John 3:16 mean, and what does these verses mean? What does Psalm 1 mean? And then study the deeper meaning. Study the Hebrew, study the Greek, study the Aramaic. And then you start to realize, wow, these words were very complex words. So when they're spoken, they have deeper meaning. Today, the English— there's so many words that represent different, basically, facets of a word that would be considered Hebrew. You could have 12 English words represent one Hebrew word. So when you see the Hebrew word in the Bible, it actually has 12 meanings. It's the essence of why God says the meek will inherit the earth. Well, meek's not the right word for the— what was described in the Bible. It means someone who has God's authority, who's willing to use it, but does it through his grace and mercy. So the reality is, is that you're going to operate— the people that are going to inherit the earth are the ones who are going to do it by force, but they also understand is when I have to be merciful and graceful to a person rather than using God's power and to, to further his kingdom. That's the essence of what the Bible means. So if you're struggling to hear God's voice, or you think you are, make sure that you're studying your Bible and diving a little bit deeper as you go into it. Because once you start to dive into the Bible a little bit deeper, you're going to start to see that he's talking to you more and more, because you can reference the Bible throughout everything that you're doing. The third one and the last one that I do think gets people tripped up a lot of times is they get themselves confused with your inner voice with God's voice. Now, the most important thing to recognize when you're listening to God's voice: one, there's no bass to it. Basically what it means is, is that even as I'm speaking and I have a deep voice, my voice can be heard throughout my entire house, whatever building I'm in, because my voice is low and it's bass and it just reverberates through walls. God's voice doesn't have that. It doesn't have actually any tone. It's just words. And so there's no— and in fact, it's hard for God to express himself without him overwhelming you. Even when I'm sitting with him and he's pouring out his heart and he's basically lamenting about a situation, Even that emotion that's attached with those words is so subtle, it's hard to feel it. So the emotion and the aspect that comes with his words gets lost in those conversations. And what happens is, is a lot of people think you're talking to yourself and it's your inner voice, but it's actually God's. That's the thing that gets people tripped up is because they can't differentiate God's words from their own. Because especially if you're a Bible-believing Christian and you're walking out things in God's way and you're operating in the areas that he's supposed to be operating, you're going to start to come up with ideas and be able to, to be able to source some things and say, hey, this came from me. But you didn't recognize, oh, you know what, it actually came from God. That's the thing that you got to start to tease out, because what happens is God's voice is extremely distinct. Your voice is going to have your tone, your attitude, your style, your emotion, your— just all the things that are about you. But God may sound similar to that, but he's going to have a little bit of different aspects. He's going to more peaceful. He's never going to be condemning. He's always going to be talking from a position of your identity. He's always going to be talking about who you are and what you should be and how he sees you, even if you can't receive it initially. Because that's the thing that he taught me. It took me years of sitting in his presence, years of sitting in his presence multiple times a day, to be able to start to understand how he saw me. I had to undo my perception of myself and I can basically take even my knowledge of the Bible and put it aside and just basically say, okay, Father, talk to me as the way you see me so that I can see myself in the same way. And when you start to basically yield yourself in that way, you'll start to see this bifurcation. It's a split. You'll see yourself come over here, you'll see God go over here, and you'll be very clear because guess what? You'll hear your voice, you'll hear his voice, and you'll know the difference. And that's the thing that a lot of people, when they're walking out life, that they miss. They miss these 3 elements that prevent them from actually operating from the place that God wants them to. And you really can't operate on a day-to-day basis without hearing his voice and discerning and teasing out his interests versus yours. So I pray this video helps you start to walk life out in abundance and in overflow so that you can start to see and develop stronger mindsets that are kingdom-oriented So that you can move forward in the areas that God wants you to, so that you don't no longer have to continue to operate in the areas you're in, whether that's in lack or even in overflow. God wants greater for you, and in order for you to do that, you got to hear his voice, and you got to hear it as clear as I'm speaking to you today, because once you do, it's going to be game-changing. It's going to be difficult because you're going to have to trust him, and you're going to have to be obedient and surrender to his will. But the moment you put humility into action, God's gonna break all kinds of things off your life. He's gonna set you free and put you on basically the most incredible journey of your life, and it'll be amazing, and it'll be so cool that you can only glorify him because it won't make any other sense. And that's the essence of his voice. That's what he brings, and that's how he does it. If you love content like this, please partner with us on patreon.com.
