The TRUTH about Prosperity and the Prosperity Gospel!

A pastor dismantles both the prosperity gospel and the poverty gospel, showing how each twists Scripture. True prosperity, he argues, comes from obedience, contentment, and generous giving, not from faith as a financial transaction or from treating poverty as virtue.

You've been lied to. Twisted sermons, half-truths, bold promises with no biblical foundation. They told you your faith equals fortune, that sowing a seed guarantees stacks of cash, and if you're broke, it's because you don't believe enough. They call it the prosperity gospel, but it's a perversion of God's truth. And on the other side, the poverty-loving gospel that glorifies struggle and calls lack holy. They're both wrong. Both are dangerous, and both are keeping you from walking in the fullness of what God actually promised you. Today, I'm not preaching tradition. I'm not quoting trends. I'm opening the word and we're going all in. And this isn't hype, it's holiness. And you're about to tear down every single lie in your life because I'm going to show you all the false doctrines that you've believed into and show you what the Bible really says about prosperity, provision, and your godly purpose. This message is going to set you free, and it will wreck the lies and rebuild your faith on solid ground. That is the rock that is Christ Jesus. And you're about to step into a clarity and boldness that you may have never seen before. And the perfect will of God for your life will now become the normal. So let's unlock what's yours. Let's go. Let's talk about it. The prosperity gospel. You heard it preached from pulpits, blasted from platforms, and quoted out of context on social media. It's a message that sounds spiritual on the surface, But underneath, it's riddled with distortion. The prosperity gospel teaches that if you have enough faith and if you sow enough seed, you can declare the right words, and then God's obligated to make you healthy, wealthy, and even successful. And guess what? I'm not here to attack any people, but I'm here to expose a bad theology. The prosperity gospel reduces God to a transactional being. It turns worship into an investment strategy, and it treats Jesus not as Lord, and Savior, but as a personal banker. That's not the God of the Bible. And let me be clear, the message of Jesus Christ is not, come to me and I'll make you rich. The message is, come to me and I'll give you life and life more abundantly. But the abundance starts in the spirit, not in the stock market. The term prosperity gospel is often linked to what's called the Word of Faith movement, and it teaches that your words create your reality, that if you name it and claim it, it's yours, that you could sow a seed and demand a harvest, And look, faith does matter. Yes, your words matter a ton. And yes, giving is totally biblical. But the truths have been hijacked, repackaged, and marketed to feed greed instead of glorifying God. According to critics, the prosperity gospel is defined by 5 pillars: faith equals financial gain, generosity guarantees wealth, poverty is a sign of weak faith, God exists to serve your desires, and success is a proof of your holiness. Each one of those pillars might sound spiritual, and they might even use scripture to back it up, but so did Satan in the wilderness. He quoted scripture out of context to tempt Jesus, and guess what? Jesus just rebuked him with the truth, which is the full word of God. The prosperity gospel uses verses like, give and it'll be given to you, Luke 6:38, or, I wish above all things that you may prosper in health, You know, 3 John 1:2, to build a doctrine that says God owes you something. But when you take those verses out of their biblical context, you lose the heart of the message. The Bible doesn't teach that God is a slot machine or a financial blessing is the ultimate evidence of his favor. Rather, the Bible teaches obedience, surrender ship, and lordship. So why so much of the prosperity gospel has gained traction in this day and age? Because it feels good. It hits people's biases. It tells people what they want to hear. It promises a blessing without the sacrifice. It speaks to the pain, but not in a way that actually brings any form of healing. In a way, it ultimately feeds people false hope. And make no mistake about it, the enemy doesn't care if you're motivated by church as long as you're being misled by the theology. He can keep you in the church or out of the church, and he can continue to twist every single message and lead you astray when you think you're actually on the path that God has you on. That's why we must always return back to the Bible and understand and set separate the truths that God has in his scriptures with real promises that are there with the world's cheap imitations. Because if you don't understand what prosperity really means to God, you're either going to chase the wrong thing or you're going to reject it completely altogether. So let's examine the core claims of the prosperity gospel and see how they truly align with scripture. So faith is what they talk about guarantees wealth. So if you have enough faith, God's going to make you rich. Well, the biblical truth is Deuteronomy 8:18. You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the power to make wealth, and that you— that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers as it is today. Paul wrote, I have learned— and this is a key fact— I've learned to be content in whatever circumstances. This comes from Philippians 4:11. So the contrast here is, is that when you have faith, God's just going to continue to bless you. Well, guess what? The Bible is very clear that you plant the seed, God waters it, but you've got to go get the harvest. So it's a key part that he partners with you as part of the process. It's not going to be delivered or FedExed to your front door. Giving leads to financial gain. The prosperity gospel will say, well, donate and tithe and put your offerings in the plate, and then God's going to multiply your wealth. But the biblical truth comes from Malachi 3:10. It says, bring the full tithe into the storehouse that there may be food in my house, and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open The windows of heaven for you and pour out a blessing until there's no more need. The key fact comes from 2 Corinthians 9:7. It's— what it means is, is each of you should give what you've decided in your heart to give, for God loves a cheerful giver. This is actually one of the most dangerous places that prosperity gospel gains ground because it's so close to the truth that's in the Bible that it's difficult for people to tease out the difference. Even as I describe it, you might say, well, that sounds the same. But here's what the difference is. The key thing is, is that where is your heart in your donations? When you are tithing, you're tithing about the— back to the house of God because it's a commandment. It's a part of your walk. When you sow offerings into other ministries, first fruits and all these things, how are you doing it? Are you doing it from the perspective that you want to be blessed and have it come back to you pressed down, shaken together, run it over? Or are you doing it to move God's kingdom forward? The posture of your heart is critical because what will happen is, is that the moment you start to give your money into the kingdom of God, God's going to use it for his kingdom. And if you're doing it for the heart of the kingdom, for the move of God, then it's completely different than if you're just doing it because you want to be blessed in return. And that's a key point. So claim number 3 is poverty equals lack of faith. Oh, this is a tough one for people to swallow. Because the prosperity gospel says if you're poor, it's because you lack the faith in order to generate wealth. Well, here's the truth. Jesus praised the poor widow and who gave the 2 small coins. Mark 12:41-44 says, and he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums, and the poor widow came and put in 2 small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him, and he said to them, truly I say to you, This poor widow has put more than all of those who are contributing to the offering box, for they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put everything she had, all she had to live on. The fact comes from James 2:5. It says, listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs to the kingdom which he has promised to those who love him? This is a key thing because what happens is, is they equate faith into the fact that you have lack of finances. But the reality is, is when you understand how this works, is that this is a part of how they like to twist the scriptures. The thing is, is that if you're financially poor, there's actual multiple reasons why you're in that case, and then faith has absolutely nothing to do with it, although it potentially could be the starting point in which you can move forward in the, in the prosperity of the kingdom. But the The reality is, is that if you're walking out God's path, you have to understand is that that doesn't equate to finances. Here's a perfect example from scripture that goes even further. When Paul was under arrest and on his way to Rome, they crash landed on the island of Malta. And what happened was is that when the ship crashed, Paul was in chains and he was in bondage. He had a snake come out of the fire and bite his hand. And yet afterwards they realized he didn't die. He started laying hands on everyone. And left the island with so many gifts. So Paul came to the island poor and left rich. And so this is important to understanding, is, is that God's got you in your season for a reason, because through that season what will happen is, is that will allow you to move into a greater character, which is more important than anything, to be able to steward what he has for you. So let's go ahead— that we talked about the prosperity gospel. Now we talk about the poverty gospel and how this one doctrine wrecked the church 500 years ago, and it ruined generations through the lies that poverty is piety. The poverty gospel teaches that being poor is a spiritual virtue. Oh, this is so powerful. And that material wealth is a sign of worldliness or even sin. It promotes the idea that struggle is sacred and that the abundance is a distraction from righteousness. This mindset glorifies lack, suffering, and barely surviving as badges of humility. Wow, that's pretty powerful. It twists the biblical concept of contentment into a fear of increase. It shames provision while pretending scarcity is God's perfect will. Ultimately, it keeps believers totally bound, makes them ineffective in kingdom work, and dependent not on God, but on the religious systems that never equipped them at all to thrive. Ultimately, what you see here is, is this false claim starts with poverty is piety. It says That Jesus was poor, so we should be too. Well, the reality is God was not poor when he was here on earth. 2 Corinthians 8:9 says, though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor so that through his poverty might become rich. In fact, Jesus chose humility to fulfill the prophecy, not to run a permanent profiteering— Jesus chose humility to fulfill prophecy, and his mission was redemptive, not a financial restraint. He had a treasurer. He was offered gold at his birth, and he had still overflow even as Judas stole continuously from the money bag. Jesus was never poor. In fact, he overflowed financially at a level that maybe few had ever operated with because his ministry was the ministry of redemption, ministry of putting a place of a permanent sacrifice for all sins, and God blessed him everywhere he went. The next second flame The second claim within the poverty gospel is talking about money is evil, and we know that it says over and over again money is evil. It's the root of all kinds of evil. But we know when you read scripture from 1 Timothy 6:10, it says the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil because the reality is money is not the problem; your heart is. Wealth in righteous hands builds the kingdom of God. Look at Abraham, David, Solomon, and even the early church had abundant riches. Resources to bless others. It's not about having money, it's about who's ruling who. And if you rule money, that's not the problem. It's when money rules you and it becomes your idol, that's when it's an issue. Here's the third claim that the poverty gospel continues to say over and over again: blessed are the poor. When you see that taken out of context, it can wreck you financially, because what it says is you must be financially poor to receive Spiritual blessings. No, that's not the truth, because it comes from Matthew 5:3. It says, blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. The fact is, Jesus never said to be financially poor. He was talking about being poor in spirit. And those who recognize their need for God, the connection to him, which is so critical— it's about relationship. That verse is talking about humility, not bank accounts. In fact, the kingdom is so full of power, provision, and multiplication That God's never going to bless lack. He transforms it into something that can move his kingdom forward. So at this point, you're probably asking yourself, what then is biblical prosperity and how do I step into it? Because the Bible does talk about prosperity, and it starts about being holistic. So this is key. So if you're taking notes, it's critical you understand the nuances that we're about to step into, because it starts with being spiritually well. It talks about walking in righteousness, having Physical wholeness, both in body and soul, that includes your mind, your will, and your emotions. It talks about financial blessings that overflow everywhere because it's key, because you have to be able to be a blessing to bless others. Genesis 12:2 talks about this, and is this is what God was talking to Abraham. He says, "I will make you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great so that you will be a blessing." Proverbs 10:22 says it further: The blessing of the Lord brings wealth. Without painful toil for it. 3 John 1 through, taken in the correct context, it says, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that you all may go well with you, even as your soul is going along well. True prosperity is about alignment to God's purpose, stewardship, and contentment. And this is key because you have to understand that this is key. Let me explain it a different way so you can understand it more. Whenever you go through the process of humbling yourself, surrendering, and become obedient to God's call on your life, what will happen is provision chases you. This is extremely important because God's going to develop in you the character he needs and all of the aspects that you need to be able to move forward. He will squeeze out of you the things that you don't need and push out the style, the lifestyle, and even the thoughts that are basically holding you back. When you step into that, God's going to start to bless you in ways that you don't understand because those blessings will include wisdom. They'll include peace. They'll include joy. And they will include finances, because God will move you in order to move his kingdom forward. And that's key, because while the church will debate prosperity, the world seized it— building empires, accumulating wealth— and they influence society through finances. God's children are called to be the stewards of the kingdom of God. They're called to influence and to lead. Proverbs 13:22 says, a good person will leave an inheritance for their children's children, but a sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous. And it's key to even understand the context of that one because it's so important as you steward things forward. It's time to renew our minds. Romans 12:2 urges us, don't conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. So how do you actually step into this? You actually step into God's kingdom first. Matthew 6:33, seek his kingdom and his righteousness, and all of these things will be given unto you. This is important Because when you understand kingdom is a combo word— king's dominion— what it means is he wants to be the king of your heart. He wants to be the king that rules your actions, rules your words, so that when you align your purposes with God's purposes, then his kingdom can come forth through into you and then through you. And then his righteousness is really correlated to living a holy life, living to the scriptures, loving God first, Loving your neighbor as yourself, so key. When you can do those things, put them into perspective, and walk that out in victory, you're going to start to do what Matthew 6:33 does. Because what'll happen is it'll lead to practicing stewardship, managing your resources wisely, recognizing that they belong to God. When you embrace contentment, Philippians 4:2, and Paul writes, I've learned that the secret of being content in any and every situation The key part is, is that secret to be content is to recognize that you have an assignment for the day. That assignment, and this is key, if you wanna understand everything about prosperity, I can almost sum it up in this next set of words. So Keith, listen to this. It's extremely important. When you operate in kingdom overflow, it isn't always related directly to finances. It is related directly to you. This is key cuz God wants you to prosper in every part of your life. He doesn't want you to be sick because it's impossible for his children to be sick. If you're sick, or if you have an infirmity or have a disease, God will heal it. You have to come into agreement with that, that it will come and that he will bless you. Because what king wants his servants, wants his children to be struggling? Do you want your children to be struggling and sick? No. God wants you to be whole, to be an exact representation of him. You have to be representative of him. But you have to recognize that in, in the situation you're in today, Be content, because when you are content in your situation and operating in overflow, what happens is God will bless each situation in its own unique way, both preparing you and setting the stage to glorify himself. Meaning that as you move forward in victory, if you are in a place where you're not financially set, God's still blessing you. If you're in a place where you are overflow, God's going to bless you. You have to recognize that this is key, that at every situation, be content. Because when you do that, what happens is, is that you're no longer swayed by trying to make something happen before it occurs. You're not trying to press forward and try to birth something before it's supposed to happen, or becoming too lazy to receive it. This is key. So when you walk into prosperity, that's the essence. That's the line you're going to walk. You're not walking the line of greed. and you're not walking the line of poverty. But what you're doing is, is you're walking the path God has for you, being content in those moments, watching God transform you from the inside out, and then blessing you along the way. And those blessings will include the power to heal, the power to move mountains, the power to gain wealth. And that's how God works. And so when you receive it with a righteous heart through gratitude, the blessings never stop because God's a multiplier. And it also includes being generous. Look at Acts 20:35. It's more blessed to give than to receive, because you have to recognize that God's going to bless you to the point where you overflow and not only overflow, that you will be able to give far more than you ever receive. And that's key. Reject the lies of the prosperity and poverty gospel. Embrace the fullness of God's promises, which may include material blessings, but they always will prioritize your spiritual growth. Because even with the material stuff, It's only to advance his kingdom and advance your character. The obedience and alignment with his will is so important because that will allow you to scale up and to receive all the things he has, because everything's a stepping stone. So while you may be financially rich in this moment or financially poor, God wants you to steward what you have in front of you properly so that you can move it forward so he can bless you even further. And when you continue to do that, there is no upper limit. That's key. Let's be a generation that understands the true prosperity of the kingdom. It's not as the world gives, but as God intends. And so if this message resonated with you, go ahead, share this with others seeking the truth. Subscribe for more teachings rooted in scriptures of God. Let's journey together towards an authentic faith and understanding that God wants to bless you, and he wants you to be blessed in a way that you can bless others. But it all starts with internalness. He wants you to be representative of him. Seek his kingdom, his king's dominion. It starts with you. Seek his righteousness through holy living. When those things start to happen, you're already starting to be financially wealthy. All the things start to get set— all those things start to get set in stage, and then he starts to bless you in overflow and health and wealth in other areas. But he's going to do it in stages so it doesn't overwhelm you. And when you do receive it, you'll always be in a position to tithe and give offerings back to the church. Because you know the more money you make, the more you can give back to the church, the more you can move the kingdom of God forward. And once you're at that point in your life, you're now going to walk the line that God wants you to walk between poverty and excess. And guess what? His kingdom can move forward in victory. And that's what he wants for you in your life, because this is our dominion. Ultimately, this world belongs to the children of God, and God wants to bless the other people in this world. But he's got to bless you, and you have to have that right character. And when you have all those things and he can trust you to move it forward, guess what happens? Overflow happens everywhere. And guess what? You won't care about the money because you know money is not even a tool. It's the seed that then produces another harvest. So you'll consume it like a seed and it'll become more bountiful. And when you unlock that truth, which we've talked about in other videos, it will totally set you free. And what'll happen is it'll move you forward in victory Because at the end of the day, the most important thing is our relationship with Christ. That's it. We need to have a closer relationship with Christ, and then we know that as we do these things, it's for his glory and his kingdom. And guess what happens? He will move in great power and authority because he's going to be the Jehovah Jireh that meets you on the mountaintop in the midst of your sacrifice with the provision that you need in order to bless you further. God bless.
