Avoid A Big Outsourcing Mistake By Knowing Who to Hire First

John Jonas says hire your first virtual assistant to do something you already know how to do, ideally a task you hate and repeat. You'll train faster, keep quality high, and free up your time gradually instead of handing off work you don't understand.

Hey. Welcome to tip number four in my hiring VA's outsourcing series. Today's tip is about who to hire first. What my advice is going to be today is going to be contrary to what most people will tell you. Most people will tell you is to hire someone to do something you don't know how to do something that you can't do in your business. And my advice is the opposite. So my tip today is. Hi. Hire someone to do something that you know how to do. And the reason for this is because most people will have a much better experience in hiring someone if they hire someone to do something that they do know how to do versus something they don't know how to do. Let me get into this a little bit. You're working 60 hours a week and you're overwhelmed, and you go and try and hire a VA to build your website, which is something you don't know how to do. So building a website and really any task is not that simple. It's not just, oh, hire someone else to do this and it'll get done for you. It's not how it works. You have to be involved. And if you have to be involved in something you don't know how to do, either you're going to get terrible results from it or it's going to take so much more of your time, and that time doesn't go away. So what I suggest you do is instead hire someone to do a task that you do know how to do, something that you're currently doing in your business, preferably something you do and you don't like to do. So you hire this person. You hire them for not for their. Necessarily their skills, but for a role so they can take over multiple tasks. But you're going to teach them one task to start off with, and then you're working 60 hours a week. You were going to work 65 hours a week for the first week, then you're going to work 60 hours a week the next week because you're not working on this task anymore. And then the next week after that, you're still managing this person, but now hopefully you're down to 55 hours a week. And now you have something that got off of your plate so that you, the entrepreneur, which your time is the most effective time, the most important time, now you have more time. And whatever you were doing before is now getting done the way that you wanted to get it done because you taught them how to do it. So hiring someone to do something that you know how to do is definitely the most effective way that I have seen entrepreneurs do this. Yes, you can outsource things that you don't know how to do, and that's fine. But when you get started, my suggestion is to hire for something that you do know how to do, something that you're currently doing. You can get that off of your plate.
