Ep. 156: Why I Won't Recruit For You

John Jonas explains why he refuses to recruit candidates on behalf of clients, arguing that hiring is about personality and cultural fit — things only the employer can judge. He points listeners to his VAOA.com hiring process and notes an OnlineJobs.ph recruiting service exists, but says self-hiring yields better long-term matches.

Welcome to the Secret Sauce of Outsourcing podcast that's dedicated to making you better at outsourcing to the Philippines. This is episode 156, why I Won't recruit for you. So I get a version of this email, in my email or in my social media at least once a week that someone says, hey, John, can you just recruit someone for me? You know how to do it. It's easy for you. Just do it for me. And my answer is always the same.
No, I won't do it for you.
There's a bunch of reasons why. It's not that I can't hire someone.
Someone good.
I can. I know I can. That's why I created one VAOA.com to teach you how to hire for yourself. I know I can do it for myself. I also have a recruiting service at OnlineJobs ph OnlineJobs ph Recruiting. And yet I don't like the recruiting service. I don't promote it.
I don't talk about it, although I.
Just now talked about it. It's not something I like. Why we're good at recruiting, but we're not that good at recruiting for you, because hiring isn't about finding a skill. It's not about finding the most skilled person. You're hiring a person, you're hiring a human with a personality. And hopefully that person's going to work.
With you for 20 years.
I mean, the first person I ever hired was in 2005. It's 2022 as I record this. And he still works for me in all of that, despite my hiring experience and my knowledge about it and how. How much. How effective it is, you're still better at hiring for yourself because you get to tell the personality when you hire someone. And if I hire someone for you, I don't know your personality. I don't know how their personality meshes with your personality. I don't really know how their personality fits your role or your company or your culture or any of that. So the reason my 1vaoa.com process works for just about everyone is because it lets you see the person's personality. It's also super easy to weed people.
Out with very little effort on your part. You get to see all kinds of.
Things about them without the need to.
Get on a live interview with them.
And with all this, you're pretty dang.
Likely to hire the right person. And really, every time you do it, you're likely to hire the right person. On my team of 40 people who I've hired over the years, one by.
One, we have a ton of different personalities. Some people like to work on their.
Own, some people prefer to be. They're better in teams, and we find that out in the interview process.
Some are early birds, some are night owls, some need a lot of hand.
Holding, and some work best completely on their own.
Some are outspoken, some are shy and introverted, and you can't know these types.
Of things without doing the interviewing yourself, doing the hiring yourself. You're like twice as likely to end up with a good person if you do it yourself versus if I did it for you or if my team did it for you.
Also, just so you know, at OnlineJobs.
Ph Recruiting, I'm not the one doing the hiring. I will actually never hire for you. That's someone on my team doing it.
And they're good at it.
You're still better than they are at it.
