John Jonas (Secret Sauce of Outsourcing podcast, Ep. 298) argues that Filipino online specialists (OFS) demonstrate strong loyalty when treated well, and that this loyalty is especially valuable for small businesses because it reduces damaging turnover. He supports the claim with multiple personal anecdotes (first hire from 2005 still employed; a programmer offered higher overseas pay but stayed part-time; a Facebook-related hiring scare) and specific historical wage examples (e.g., $500/month then vs. $2,500/month overseas in 2006). Jonas closes with practical advice to post jobs on onlinejobs.ph and an offer to help via 1vaoa.com.

Welcome to the Secret Sauce of Outsourcing podcast that's dedicated to making you better at working with online Filipino specialists OFS. This is episode 298 Filipinos are loyal and It Matters. So I've. I've seen this loyalty thing in the Philippines for a long time, and I've talked about this quite a few times. Like, the first person that I ever hired still works for me today. I hired him in 2005, and he still works for me today. And he's amazing. But I remember the first time that I saw the culture of loyalty in the Philippines. So I had this amazing programmer working for me. He was. I don't know if you're listening to this. If you remember when Google used to publish their Page Rank. So I had some really good websites and they were doing really well. And I had some stuff that was Page Rank five. And this programmer that I had hired, I didn't know this at the time, but his blog was a PageRank 6. He had done some really big stuff that a lot of people were using and linking to. And I mean, I would put this guy's talent up against anybody in the world. He was. He was really, really talented. And then one day he sent me an email. He said, sir, this is a really hard email to write. I got offered my dream job. I'll be going to Singapore, working for a company making $2,500 a month. And he said, I need to take this job. It's been my dream to work overseas. But don't worry, sir, I'm not quitting. I'll continue to work for you part time at the rate you're currently paying me. And so when I got this, I was shocked. Number one, I didn't know at the time how big of a deal it was to go and work overseas. Number two, so. So he was making $500 a month working for me full time, and he was going to make $2,500 a month full time overseas. And the fact that he would still work for me part time at $250 a month was shocking to me. Now, just so you know, these wage numbers were 2006. Things have changed. So like that guy today would. He would command a much, much higher salary, probably closer to 2000 or $2500 a month. But that was the first time I really saw the loyalty. I didn't really understand it up until then. And then the second time I really saw it was when I friended one of my people on Facebook. I was in a mastermind group and people said, oh, you should be friending your people on Facebook just to see what's going on. And so I was like, okay, I'll try it. And I did. And I didn't realize, but almost immediately, this person starts getting job offers from other people who had seen that I had friended them on Facebook. They knew, oh, my workers are really great. Oh, I can just offer this person a job making twice as much as they're making for John, and I'll hire them away from him. Well, within a few days of friending her, I started seeing comments offering jobs. And some of them, like, offered, you know, to double her salary. And it scared me. And I unfriended her because I didn't want her to leave. And really, she never missed a beat. She never. She never. She didn't quit. She didn't leave. She didn't. She. Her work quality never suffered. When I unfriended her and I told her why, she said to me, oh, don't worry, sir. I'm not leaving. I get job offers every day. I'm not. I'm not leaving you. And that was again, I mean, that was the second time I really saw the loyalty from the Philippines, and I was really surprised. Now when I saw it the third time, I wasn't as surprised, and the fourth time, I wasn't really surprised. And today, as I record, this is 2023, and I still have people working for me from 2005 and 2007 and 2008 and 2009 and 2011. And Filipinos are loyal as long as you treat them well. It's one of the really great qualities that makes them such good employees, that makes hiring people in the Philippines full time so good versus other places around the world. And it's especially good if you're running a small business because turnover for a small business is so devastating. Now, all of this is conditional upon you treating them well. They won't jump ship if they just get a better job offer. As long as they like where they're working, as long as they feel like they're treated well and they're contributing and they have room to grow. And they're not just in a dead end. So you certainly have to treat them well. But if you do, it really is a game changer for a small business owner. Filipinos are loyal. It matters. Hire an OFS today.
