John Jonas argues that postponing hiring because you're overwhelmed keeps you trapped. He's worked 15 hours a week since 2010 by hiring outsourced workers, a process he says takes under 2 hours end-to-end. Stop waiting until you have time. Hire first, get breathing room second.

Welcome to the Secret Sauce of Outsourcing podcast that's dedicated to making you better at outsourcing. This is episode 314. Are you too overwhelmed to think about hiring? This is going to be controversial today, but I hear from employers quite a bit who tell me that they are too busy and too overwhelmed to think about hiring someone right now. And I felt this before. I'm like, I have so much to do. I have so many emails here. I have all these, all these things that I need to get done. I can't take the time to post a job right now and recruit someone, full stop. Did you just hear what I said? When I thought that to myself, I thought, can't believe I just said that to myself. I'm too busy to do the thing that will make me less busy. You are too busy to do the thing that will take time off of your plate and make you more money because you have things that you have to do which are keeping you strapped and tied to your busy busyness rather than doing the thing that will make you unbusy and help you grow your business. When I heard that, man, I had a real mind shift change. I put off the things I had to do and I posted a job. Magically, the urgent things were still there the next day. I don't know if that's how your business works, but there's always work to be done and if I do it today or if I do it tomorrow, doesn't really matter. Magically, the urgent things were still there the next day, still waiting for me to do them, and nothing had burned down. But now I'm one step closer to getting rid of some of those things off of my plate because I'm hiring someone else to do them for me. So I've worked about 17 hours a week since 2010 and what I've seen is it takes one decision to get you off of the busy, busy, busy, busy rush, rush, rush rat race path and onto the less busy, less overwhelmed path. Hire an OFS and get one thing off of your plate. And realistically, it doesn't even take as much time as you think. Using the steps that I outline@1.vaaway.com, this should take you less than 2 hours, start to finish, including watching the videos. And you should have someone working for you who you can start to delegate things to and get a little bit less busy. So I'm too busy to hire someone right now. If you hear yourself saying that full stop, listen to what you're saying and think about how you are handicapping yourself by saying I can't do the one thing that I need to do to make myself less busy.
