John Jonas argues in a short YouTube monologue that the idea of a singular "best person" to hire is a myth. Instead, hiring should prioritize the best available person now — someone with the right attitude, skills, and availability — because waiting for an ideal candidate is usually impractical; the available hire can be developed through training, feedback, and management.

The best person is a myth. The best person is the one who has the right attitude and the right skills and who's available to work for you right now because if you waited a little bit longer you might find someone who's more talented. You might, if you find, if you waited a little bit longer you might find someone who is less expensive and the same talent. If you wait a little bit longer there might be someone who comes available who's a better personality fit. But all of that waiting isn't really what you want and that's worse. And so you're not finding the best. The best person is the best available person because the reality is that the best person is probably already employed with someone else and they're not available for you, they're not looking for work, you're not going to find them. And what matters is right now and who's available right now. So the best available person right now can improve with training and feedback and good management.
