What Roles Do You Need To Build A Website - Practical Advice

John Jonas breaks down the roles needed to build a website: designer, front-end developer, back-end programmer, and system admin. The traditional webmaster job mostly disappeared with WordPress. When you're starting out, one person can handle multiple roles.

So I wanted to talk today about how websites work. What's up guys? This is John Jonas and I am at Lake Powell and it's amazing here. I got an email from someone last week that said hey John, can you explain to me like how does the website work? I think I have to hire a designer to design the website and I think I have to have a webmaster and I've done a lot of web stuff and so I just wanted to explain a couple things about how it works. So first of all, a webmaster isn't really a thing anymore. Like webmasters kind of evolved away as content management systems started being created, which would be WordPress. So like it's super easy to hire someone to put up a WordPress site for you where you're going to manage the website yourself because it's super, super simple. So you don't need someone to make changes to the website for you because you can do it. So easy to hire someone to do WordPress and on onlinejobs. Ph, super simple. Just go on and look at WordPress in the skills in the search or you can post a job looking for someone to build your website with WordPress. Super simple. If you're going to do something custom. So like you need custom software done, you need a custom part of your website, some programming done. So that's a different story. And that custom would be like anything where the website requires a database backend. Like you're going to get user input and the website's going to display something else. So in that case, well, first of all, very often there's already a software solution that will do it. WordPress will do it, or ClickFunnels will do it or something else out there will do it. Stripe or square will do it. Somewhere something will do that for you. Where you don't have to hire a programmer to do it, but if you do, here's how it works. So a programmer is never going to make a website look good. It's just not going to happen. So typically you would have a designer design the site for you according to the content that you've given them. So you give some content and you pick another website that you like and then you're going to hire a designer and they're going to do design work for you. From there you're going to want someone that can do front end work which would be HTML and CSS and they can turn it into HTML, which is the language of the Internet. That's how it's going to show up in people's browsers. Then for custom stuff you want a programmer. So there's three different roles here. One of them is yours, which is in content and maybe that's, maybe you're going to hire that out. That was the first role that wasn't part of the three. First role is design. Second role is front end which would be HTML and css. The third role is a programmer and that would be like a PHP programmer or a Ruby on Rails programmer. HTML and CSS is not programming. The programmer is the last person to get it. The design goes first and hopefully you can work out the design with the designer so that they are designing it how you want and it's functional. And then you get it to the front end person which would be HTML and CSS and JavaScript. That's a front end thing. And then the back end interaction, the database interaction, that all happens with a programmer. So I hope this is helpful to help you understand like how a website is created. So at onlinejobs Ph I'll just tell you the roles that we have and I do this just to try and make this a little bit easier. Obviously onlinejobs PH is custom software that has user accounts and users creating profiles and users posting jobs and all that stuff is interaction with the database. So we have a couple different designers who design pages and then after the designs are done it goes to a front end person which they do HTML and CSS and some JavaScript. So the designer creates a design, then they put it into, I don't even know what they do, they put it into Figma or something which is a tool that they're all using to try and make this easier. And then the front end person creates the HTML and CSS and they hand it off to the programmer and the programmer creates the interaction with the database and they create the interaction with the front end design that was done and they put it up on the website and make it work. We also have a different person that does system admin. So a system administrator manages our servers and makes sure that we have enough capacity on the servers. So that's also a different person, a system admin. So these people are different than like the social media person you have. Our social media person does not touch the website. Right. However, when I started I had people that touched everything. Like I had someone in the Philippines who knew nothing and I taught him how to manage WordPress and so he built the WordPress site and he would mess with it and he was also doing Google Adwords because I taught him how to do it. And he was doing SEO because I taught him how to do that. So you can, you can find people that'll do all kinds of things, all kinds of different roles for you. When you're getting started, you don't have to go out and hire a designer and hire a friend in person. You can do it step by step, little by little. That's what I did. Things work out better typically when you have all those roles filled, but it's not necessary. So if you're interested in hiring these people, head over to OneVaoa.com where I will walk you through the process of hiring. Like, I guarantee you'll find someone great@1vaoa.com. It's my hiring process. I walk you through it. I've done it dozens of times. And every time I go to hire someone, I know I'm gonna find someone great because I've done it enough times. 1vaoa.com it.
