Why You Should or Should Not Work at a Startup by Justin Kan

In this keynote, Justin Kan, a three‑time Y Combinator alumnus and founder of Justin.tv, Exec, and Atrium, shares an unfiltered look at the pros and cons of joining a startup. He begins by outlining three major reasons to avoid startups: (1) management is often poor, leaving employees without mentorship unless they actively seek it; (2) the odds of becoming wealthy from a startup are statistically low; and (3) many people now view Silicon Valley as a career path focused on stability, which startups rarely provide. He then flips the script and presents three compelling reasons to work at a startup: (1) startups give you access to roles you’re technically unqualified for, illustrated by Guillaume’s rapid promotion from junior engineer to backend lead and later co‑founder of Socialcam and Triplebyte; (2) they serve as a gateway to founding your own company, shown through Finbar’s journey from Groupon engineer to founder of a YC‑backed startup; and (3) they dramatically accelerate personal learning, with two case studies – Kyle Vogt’s crash‑course in building a scalable live‑video system that later powered Twitch, and his brother Daniel’s painful negotiation experience on a failing home‑cleaning startup that taught him deal‑making skills later applied at Cruise, which sold to GM for $1 billion. Throughout, Kan emphasizes a growth mindset: focus on maximizing your learning slope rather than seeking a stable y‑intercept, and use the startup experience—whether it succeeds or fails—to boost your personal development.
