1st Day in the (tiny) Cabin

Victor Justin Rhodes and his family move into a tiny guest cabin on their farm. They unpack, rearrange furniture, fix the water filter and internet, milk the livestock, and cook their first meal together in the cramped space.

Downgraded to our guest cabin on the farm across the street. Just moved in yesterday. You can see it's a mess. We're just realizing how extra we are. Like this table, it was roomy over at the Holler House. That's where we're remodeling. Lily is hating on that fridge. Mom had a late night thought: move the fridge over here, move the shelves over there, get a smaller table. This table's a little extra with its width. Somebody left the fridge open. Yes, we need two fridges. We'd hope put this in here and open it this way, but this counter gets in the way. The animals don't care that we move. We gotta go. Here's the other thing. The internet is crawling over here. It's taking like 16 hours to upload just the day's footage. I asked them to increase it over here yesterday. I guess that didn't happen. One of the biggest things, this tub. This tub is for children, and you could take a shower. Rebecca took a bath this morning and her legs were covered. That was it. This is good room for a freezer. The master closet is amazing.
Maybe there should be less space in there and more space in the tub.
Yeah, there could be some redesign for sure. Rebecca is working on seeing if she can't get a deeper tub. Tubs are crucial for us for our Epsom salt bath. I bet you the problem is going to be is there's only so much width here. Been doing a lot of measuring lately, about to start remodeling. Start with a micro remodel over here. Let's say 58 and a half. This lacks an inch and a half to be a normal shower situation.
The calf and the sheep got out of their pen and busted his face.
Oh no, I don't have any shoes. Well, what shoes were you wearing yesterday?
I wasn't wearing anything.
Okay, then can you not do that?
Oh, it's cold.
Well, maybe they're in this box. This is the first— looking for Mr. Brown's shoes in a box. Calf's are out. Gotta find Mr. Brown's shoes. Can you go start Sally, please? They're on a destruction path. They busted out of their paddock over in the woods, come across the creek, and now busted into here. Best idea is to herd them into here. I'm fine with them here, actually. We got Nacho in here. Billy, do you think you're gonna lead those two lambs with some alfalfa? And then we'll have Everybody over here. So I go around the corner, the back of the pole barn, and get us that 50-foot net. If everybody's over here—
the calves might be weaned. We could just keep them in here.
Oh, that's a good point. They're not paying attention to their mama. They're steers. They're not gonna breed anybody. You know, they still nurse their mom, but they might have been away from them long enough.
I've been all winter.
That still leaves Nacho, but they're sheep.
They like alfalfa.
Okay, go get us some alfalfa, please. What do you think, cowboy? Maybe it's worth a try because then they have the minerals, they'll get to go on the actual grass in a couple of weeks. He's wanting these ladies, but it's not breeding time. Sally could pull the trailer if we're just going from here to there. He ain't gonna follow us, is he? Okay, hopefully I can herd him.
Should we keep him in the stall with his two friends where I don't have to herd him into the stall every day?
No, it'd be better if they go in the pasture. Can you stand next to Sally? Well, they're easily moved. 50 feet away from them, they're going. Lily, you're gonna open that when they come in, okay? Josiah, go Go wide, be anticipating. Oh snap, they went the wrong way. Oh, they can go that way. They're gonna go through that crack right there, I'm afraid. Open the gate. It's okay, it's okay. Don't worry about it. We'll get him back in. Go stand in that crack. Lily, come down this way. All right, well, I guess we're taking the tractor. Hopefully it'll start. It's a cold morning. It's a celebration every time Lucky starts. That was a good hour mistake right there. We all forget to turn the Energizer back on. I need you to get in to stand up there, and you're gonna turn that water off when it gets full, okay?
Don't leave me.
Well, then we're gonna just stand here together and be 20 more minutes on milking, okay? Okay, look, get in. It doesn't have much. Once this gets full, you come. I'll go get started on milking. Turn it off over here. You turn this off And then this back on.
I get my hands warmed up and then dried, and then I can milk, especially on cold days. Guess that water is very hot. I milk the back left teat first because when I milked these two teats first and then that one first, she started kicking when I started milking that teat. And this teat has mastitis, so it doesn't do anything. It does good stuff, but it's just super gross.
See?
Look at this. You guys ever had sheep milk? It's so sweet. It's so good for you too.
I think I could tie her leg.
You could. You might fall over, but— Okay, so now she's against this wall. There you go. Did you tie her?
I tried it, but it didn't really work.
There you go. Let me try something. Now, cows, we milk on the right side, probably for— I don't know, we have our left shoulder against them. What if you had your left arm right there?
Oh, good idea.
You won't be able to drink this because there's so much crap in this. You want to try it? So block it with your left arm. There you go. That's better, right? Don't let her get away with it. Just keep pushing on it when she does that. Show her that you don't stop even when she kicks. Good. New entrance. Hey, what'd you do? Get so busy you can't find your other shoe?
I can't find it. It's lost somewhere. We are moving and shaking. I got a bunch of jobs for Randolph. We're gonna replace this light and that light and the light in the boys' room.
I need to get him to get the Ethernet cable in here somehow. Did you get you on the water filter duty?
Yep, fixing to turn it on.
What would we do without Randolph?
I bought a new table. We have chairs.
No, those chairs are big too, babe.
The smaller chairs.
Do you know where they are?
They're in the container. There's enough because I bought a bench, so the bench can go right here and then the table can go up against it.
Okay.
And then we'll have the chairs around it. It's still a big table. It's this wide.
When's it coming?
Monday.
Breaking in the water filters. She's gotta let each one fill up. And I've just said we need a big coffee pot. We gotta figure out how to get— make him some coffee. That's what we got to get to my computer somehow. You just want to go through that block, or we could come in where they're coming in. I'm not seeing it here. It must have went under the house. Probably easier just to drill through over there. See this cable? This Must have been satellite. There it goes, that dish. So where'd they come in with that? Here it is, goes into that box. How's this going?
It's going.
What's the name of this? Mito line?
Mito line. It seems like it's a good one.
Can you get a filter for this cabin smell? I woke up last night thinking I'm swallowing it. It's like crazy. Feeling good getting that done, but Lily, she's got horse lessons. Mom has idea. I thought she was moving the cabinet over there and then the fridge there. But no, she's moving that cabinet into the corner.
We'll take off the doors. That door is not usable.
Yeah, pleasantly surprised when I get back, I'm sure. She gets in a mode. She hasn't even eaten breakfast. Maybe you take time out to eat sometime today.
Yes, it's too chaotic.
Randolph, you get that internet in? We gotta do—
look at that, he's got me a new light, and then we're gonna have a new light.
So much brighter in here. Where'd you get these lights?
They're from our house.
Let's try this. Cable. 5 hours left. It was 5 hours left 3 hours ago. Do I have the internet? Run the speed test. Hopefully it didn't throttle me back. 740. Whoa, 50! That'll do it. I've never seen it that high.
Yummy.
I could go kiss Randall. We won't have a place to eat in here till Monday, you think?
We can use this. We just have to clear it off.
I see you got all the stuff over there. Are you able to get the fridge back yet?
So we were, and actually what happened is, is when I connected the water back to the fridge, I didn't do a good enough job and it leaked, so we're just dehumidifying it. My water filter is 30— less than 30 minutes away from being able to flush it out. And then we can get it going for like roll.
We are eating outside. It's sunny and lack of space in here. New home cabin, old home. You guys recognize this? We still gotta cook. Beef ribs laid out, Boston butt. We wanted the movers to move this over. We wanted to move that mirror too. 3 more freezers, but I was done. That's being Sell. It is kind of nice to walk in here with shoes on. Josiah has a new parking spot for his dirt bike, I see. Like 4 freezers. Goodwill for sale. This is getting taken down, relocated upstairs. The matches aren't there anymore. I have an idea. Flame eater. Beef ribs, pork ribs, and pork butt. End of day. You guys want a tour? It's picked up. I love books in the living room because I love books. We got a nice view of the hauler though, and the garden and the chickens. My internet is back to fast. Let's make sure it uploaded. Ah, 123 of 123 files complete. Comfortable in the home now? Is it as bad as you thought? Worse? Uh, yeah, it's worse. Oh no, in what ways? Tiny. It is, isn't it? Yeah, it's not even worse than that bus, huh? Of course you didn't— you didn't really like living in the bus, did you? This is our home now. This is so much more space here, and then you're gonna downgrade the table and it's gonna be even spacier. What do you think, Beck? Spacier?
It's gonna be really nice because I think the table will like be back to here, so it'll just be this long. And so then we can kind of shift it a little bit this way so it's not so much in the living room. The bench will go along that wall.
People can kind of use their back I like that you got the fridge out of there. Fridge is over here, killed some of our counter space, but now you have storage space over there.
Yeah, I think that we're gonna get the baskets that we have our produce in and put them here and here.
There you go.
I have some shelving that I can put here.
She did get our water filter working. It came up to pressure. Our double stove over here from the house. Hey, have you actually used this? This is coming in handy for the Burn It Up Cooking Show. There's some pluses and minuses over here. Our eggs are over here. Now this This is the kicker. She got the shelf over here. It's a little tricky. Say you want that bowl. You kind of just have to—
This is definitely a little harder to deal with it, but in the long run it's much nicer.
Hey, the Legos have revived. They cleaned out their Lego room and I'm so happy to see them playing Legos. You got a tractor? What are you building, Jonah?
This thing.
How you feeling? You and your hip?
Good.
Let's show them your back. You got cuts. Gideon's into it. He came and asked me if he could buy some more Legos. Legos today. I'm thinking you can't walk in your room because of your Legos. No way. And look at this tidy room, actually tidy. I'm not going to show you my room, it's still, it's still a work in progress. And honestly, my worst fear of coming over here is not coming through, Rebecca. It's bright in here thanks to you, Ryden, Randolph ingenuity.
You have a lot more light, especially in the afternoon because that's—
we're getting the sun setting. Tonight we feed beef ribs, onions, apples, gold southern collards, bacon, pork ribs, Boston butt, and baked beans. I I don't know what got into us the day after we moved. Now that's a feast. Hey, our first dinner together inside the cabin.
