2 Week Break (BootCamp) + What to Watch Instead

The host is taking a two-week break from vlogging to focus on a documentary bootcamp and farm work. Before pausing, he unboxes a Bear Grylls machete, trains the goat Violet, spreads a winter cover-crop mix over 3,500 square feet, and suggests videos to watch during the hiatus.

What do you think it is, man?
My machete.
You've been waiting. It didn't come with UPS. Nope. It didn't come with FedEx. Postal Service, you're our only hope. Where's your gloves? Where's your gloves? Let's see what it is. Let's see what it is. Is it it? Oh! Is this what you bought with your hard-earned money?
Yeah!
No. You got to be very careful with that. Look, this is the Bear Grylls edition. You'll be a survivor now. Hey, um, look, look at me. You never run, okay? You never sling this at anybody, okay? You only do useful things like chop down briars that are in the field, okay? Let's get big. Go! Hey, I like that chicken on your shirt. Let me see that. Let me see that chicken. Hey, Mr. Brown, you got to switch your legs. Switch your legs. Hey, you guys remember those updates, those Friday updates we used to do on the farm? Yeah, I think this is gonna be kind of like that. We got so much to talk about. A number of things we're gonna do today is talk about the 2-week break that's coming up from vlogging. We're gonna get Violet in. We got a new trick thanks to one of you guys, and we're gonna talk about what we're gonna do during that 2-week break. To maintain the farm. And, and then I'm going to make some suggestions on what to watch instead during that time. All right, you guys ready? All right, the problem I'm having is I'm stretched too thin. I'm trying to establish a homestead, do a vlog, edit the Great American Farm Tour, and run a business. It's just too much. And so when you do too much of one thing, you— or when you do too much of many things, you know what happens? You're not real good at any of them, and I really want this documentary to come out really good. You know, now that we're restoring our, our health, it's actually amazing how little time there is when you actually get a decent amount of sleep. So we're really having to figure out what's important, how to prioritize. I think that's a struggle everybody goes through. These are the berries you're going to top up. Do you know a bucket, Violet? Did they keep you on— did they give you a bucket treat at the last place? Walk with that a little bit, Josiah. Looks like maybe they had. Yeah, look. All right, go with it, Josiah. Well, that was easy. She's already been trained on a bucket. All right, go ahead, go ahead, honey. And Stud Muffin hasn't, so that's easy because we want him to stay out. Good job, Josiah. Come on, sweetie. Go, go. She's watching that. She's watching that bucket, buddy. Come on, come on, sweetie. Look, come on, look what we got for you. Look what we got. Show her the bucket. Yeah, come on.
She does not like getting in this place, don't she?
No. I'll tell you, you got it on record.
Yeah.
Okay, we'll hold it steady. Come on, show her the white bucket. Show her the white bucket. Oh, look, look how easy. Look how easy. It's getting easier every day. Once she eats the apple, then you can give her the hay. Good job, Violet. Jonah, will you pet her some? So the solution we came up with is a 2-week break from vlogging, from farming. I mean, we're gonna have to do some basic things. I'll show you those in a minute. And I'm, I'm going to boot camp, man. I'm going to Great American Farm Tour documentary boot camp. We're still gonna guard our health, uh, but we're gonna put the business to the side, the farm to the side, the vlog to the side, and we're gonna bust it on the documentary. Well, one thing we're gonna do is speed up this process with the crop guard. We're gonna move the A-frame around to different spots because it gets concentrated and worked quicker that way. They've been using their dust bath already.
Okay, let's move it from where it is to this corner. Oh, I noticed something. Chickens don't lay eggs when no one's here.
You have?
Chickens don't— chickens, uh, chickens.
Wait, is it on?
No.
Is it on? Yeah. All right, come on, come on, Violet. Wow, she's getting the hang of it, guys. So quick. They're creatures of habit. Oh, John, we gotta open this gate. So we'll, we'll also keep training her because she's gonna be due. I mean, if she has her baby during this time, we're gonna of course capture it, make a movie for you guys, because I think she's due in what, a week or two? You guys can start cutting these briars. Hey, don't hit the ground, it dulls it. Okay, okay, let's see you do it. Nice. Oh, don't hit that, it's on. I know. Just thought you're gonna stay with him and chop. Okay, thanks for the spool. Oh boy, I hope that's enough. Look, the lovebirds kiss. I'm gonna put in another side fence here. There, we got it up. You can't see it, you can barely see it. The cows can see it. One less to put up. Let's check on y'all's progress. Good job, guys. Oh, don't hit the plastic line. Grab our cross fence.
Uh, old barn.
Hey, will you go turn the fence off? We have to make a lane. We have to make a gate right here so we can get her.
I don't know if the fence is on.
Well, go double check unless you want to test it.
I'll test it.
No, hush.
I don't really hurt.
Yeah, it hurts. Did you turn it off? How can we know for sure? All right, it would have gotten me by now, I think. That's so scary. All right, undo this. Shouldn't be on. All right, come on, she got you guys.
Come on.
Golden. Okay, somebody get the handle. Uh, we'll have the cows help trot this down further. We got that done. All right, we all put this lane up for me. Thanks. Wow, that's just right. Chickens back around the holler house just feels right. Well, that's, that's what that is— organic alfalfa, extra protein for Violet during this time. Another treat for her at the stanchion. All right, one more thing to do. This is very important to do before I take a 2-week break. I gotta cover up some of these gardens, and what better to do that with some winter cover crops. Oh, you know what, before we start this project, hang on, because at the end I'm going to suggest some things for you to watch while we take our 2-week break. But I also got to say, guys, we've almost sold half of our tickets to the live premiere of Great American Farm Show. If you haven't heard of that, we're doing a live show, guys, where we're going to be there— Art and Bree, Sow the Land, Jeff and Stacy the Bus Build. We also just heard from Hardiness Approach. You came and looked at this property and you wanted it so bad, you just had to get down on your knees and pray, huh?
Oh, you can imagine. You've seen it here. Here it is. It was amazing. We were— we'd never seen anything like this. Sorry. I can't do it. I just can't do it. And it was— we were overwhelmed that it could be possible. Could we really have the chance to live in a place like this? Uh, we couldn't believe it.
Remember Casey and Tori, guys, from Charlotte? Now you guys are hard-working folks, 9-to-5 folks, right? Yep. How in the world do you find time for this? Weekends. On the weekends. This is what we do all day. No TV. They're gonna be there. It's gonna be so much fun. Once those tickets are sold out, it's over. And I think right now there's like 267 left and they're going fast. So check those out. It's a once-in-a-lifetime event. It's not like we're gonna do this ever again. So check that out. Fenugreek, barley, white oats, winter rye, clover, Austrian winter peas, winter rye. Oh, Hardy stuff will germinate under 45 degrees and will grow under 25 degrees. 7 ounces barley, 7 ounces of oats, flax, 11 ounces of peas, 4.5 ounces of clover, 2 ounces fenugreek, and that's it. Oh, that's beautiful, that's beautiful, that's That's my winter cover crop mixture. That's also things chickens will eat in the proportion that they would desire them. Now we need to mix this up and spread it out. Oh, look what I found— one of the old homestead buckets. What better thing than that to spread the seeds with? That's at a pound per 1,000 square foot. That's about That's going to be 3,500 square feet. The chickens aren't going to get to this. This is ready. Look at this garden, it's ready. It doesn't even need the chickens. Yeah, you can see the black soil. So let's spread it here. Nature, remember, doesn't— it's modest. She wants to be covered, so we're going to cover her before she does. With things that we want instead of like things that we don't want, like weeds. Here's another area they tore up when splitting all that firewood. Let's, uh, take advantage of that. They disturbed the earth, they shallow-tilled. Let's sow our seeds here. There you have it. All right, been a big day, a lot of announcements. A few more here at the end of the vlog. What to watch while we're gone for the 2 weeks. One, I might figure out how to get you guys some teases as I work on the Great American Farm Tour documentary. We're not uploading vlogs, but maybe I can upload some some of the progress of what I've been doing. It won't be that much harder. And then two, Jake from White House on the Hill did a really good job with a top 10 list of the top 10 stops on the Great American Farm Tour. He polled his audience. I thought there— it was a pretty good representation. I think many of you guys would agree with those top 10. Go check out that video, and that'll give you 10 of the farm tour videos to watch, plus Jake's. Lastly, we're in the midst of the my free intro to permaculture course. I'm calling it Your Best Homestead Ever because that's what it is. It's going to give you a really good idea, a really good way to plan for the best. I mean, you got to start with a plan. Everybody wants to know where to start. Start with a plan. I got that for you. 3 free training videos. All this stuff that I've mentioned, I'm going to go ahead and link in the description. You should have plenty to watch between Jake's top 10, between what I upload with the Great American Farm Tour, with, uh, the Intro to Permaculture course. See you guys soon enough.
