A day in the life of a Nook and Cranny Farmer

The vlog follows Victor (Speaker A) and his family as they navigate a chilly morning on their Nook and Cranny farm. After thawing frozen water lines, they tend to cows, sheep, and turkeys, set up nets, and move livestock. The family prepares a cart and a custom harness for their pony Blaze, negotiating costs and discussing future uses like a Christmas parade. Lily and Josiah get hands‑on lessons—Lily learns to pump diesel and dreams of driving, while Josiah helps herd sheep. The group visits a feed store, picks up a tiny manure spreader, and returns home for a home‑grown dinner featuring lamb, sweet potatoes, and asparagus. Victor previews upcoming projects, notably building a high‑tunnel, and reflects on the long‑term goal of sustainable, self‑sufficient farming for future generations.

This is a weird day. We don't even quite need these coats, do we? 40 degrees. It's been below 20 the last few mornings. Tomorrow it's gonna be supposed to be 18. You still got plenty of water. It's still going. We just ran over our lines yesterday clearing the trees or getting our brush ready for the wood chipper. Well, that's good. You know, we had that freeze yesterday. I'm thinking this is— do this. It's good to know that this got flowing again when it got warmer. It's a quick fix. Okay, this is a nice break in the cold weather, much needed for the morale. Happy day and welcome to our life that consists a lot of growing our own food for health and wellness and for the longevity of our bodies and the improvement of this land for the sake of our grandchildren. Thanks for joining us, everybody. It's a little bit, it's a little bit of, of, of every day, right? Grazing this, manuring this, and then moving on. Makes it a better place over time. It's the little efforts we make improving every day that suddenly, after years, big things have happened. It doesn't come fast. New spot every day where we're milking. One of my favorite spots. This is definitely some of our best grass right here, the corner of our farm. All the houses and various whatnots are that way. It's nice and flat. Easy down here, isn't it, Josiah? We got some tricks today to pull off with the most superior of all homestead animals, the cow. Lily asked me last night, why do you like cows so much? I had 3 answers. They all start with the letter M: milk, meat, and manure. Bunch of turkeys. Josiah and I have been going around picking up just sort of forgotten nets. I think we'll find enough just to set up the other net for them. Turkeys flew. There is one way up in that tree. Wow. Setting up today's net. Forgot to do it yesterday or didn't do it yesterday, which one? It was very cold. Nook and cranny farm right here. I took the net around it so as to be able to capture that grass and that grass. Guys, you tell me these are not little rocks moved 150 feet from where they're— there was not a creek here. Here we got the roadblock. Hopefully we're going to bring the sheep down through here. Sheep are a little more quick than cows. They're a little They're a little more difficult to hurt, aren't they? Yeah, they're a little more hyper. So that assures me we can lead them with alfalfa. And if not, we can always herd them. They won't get too crazy. They won't go too far. Sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep. Hey, they're not even running ahead of me. Sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep. Uh oh, there it goes. Awry. Sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep. They get in a hurry. Sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep. I'm gonna give it to you when we get there. Sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep. Pretty good. Now we're in the chute. Sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep. That was pretty painless. Now to pick up a bazillion nets. Oh my gosh, we did it! I'm telling you, with Josiah Decide just gets with it. Just a quiet, determined worker. Not freezing this morning, we're gonna go ahead and set up our water, an extra water. All right, well, that, that was frozen, so we're moving them over. We have a water trough set up here. So much for an extra one. They're good for now. It is hard to believe this sun coming up that it's also going to get cold. Backwards, isn't it? This hose is all frozen up. I'm going to put it out here just in case the sun will thaw it out despite the dropping temperatures. The cart— a cart. I'm kind of hoping this is my mission today. Special day with Lily. Get this cart ready for Blaze. Blaze is actually a cart pony. Uh, there's a place about an hour away that can get us a harness for those. That was the plan, and then I caught wind the harnesses could be like $900. I was thinking like $300 max, and that would be like crazy. But he works hard and she earns money, but I think she's at zero right now. What do you keep buying? No, she's got like 9 saddle pads. Mom and I are crazy. Always has with kids. We try to let them spend what they want with the money they've earned, so then they're excited about earning money. It's just not our same excitement. Let's go call and see if these harnesses aren't going to cost a million dollars. Look at this homegrown bacon. You can tell it's so thick. Breakfast 100% from the farm. There we go. Did you see that? Who's driving? He's doing great on the interstate. He's a fantastic driver. He's being He's being slow. He's worried a little bit about that because he's a bit of a leadfoot. I told him don't go faster than the speed limit, go slower than it if you want to, and that's what we're doing right now. You haven't driven the trailer on anything but the farm, right? Yeah. We got Blaze in the back. Gonna get him a harness. And then what are you gonna be able to do with him once he has a harness and a cart?
Um, I'm gonna take him on the— in the Christmas parade with it, and he's gonna drive around. And when I outgrow him, I can still um, kind of riding.
Yeah, I said, you want to pump the fuel or you want to do it? He said, I've never done it. I said, well then, let's go. What was Jonah's first experience like? He left this thing open, he left the truck on, he's doing it. They say you're not supposed to. Usually shows you how. Yeah, no, put it in there, leave it in there. So hold on, it's saying welcome to Shell. Okay, good, it's doing it. Lift the fuel, always get the green diesel unless you're at BP, it's black. Hit your diesel button. And now pull the trigger. Look what you're doing, bro. Yeah, kid's growing up. All right, we're back at it. Not on the highway. I feel a little better. Get off the highway, I guess. How was it getting your first fuel? You're gonna be doing that the rest of your life. You ready for that? Are you ready to grow up?
I guess I am.
Still want to be a kid?
I still am.
You you are. You're ready to grow up.
I can't wait till I can drive. I'm gonna go to a show every month.
Oh, and then you're gonna have to drive to work to afford those shows every month. I shouldn't be a Debbie Downer. I'm sorry, Lily. I'm gonna pull for you. I'm sorry. Look at this little downtown. Now this is Landrum, I think. You know, we traveled all of America in 2017. Great American Farm Tour. Go watch it, it's on Amazon. It's also— you can watch all 300 something days on here on YouTube playlist. Little towns like this all over America, sweet little towns. All right, we are there. Everybody ready for a horse carriage experience? Hey, I've been calling about that harness on the pony.
So here's the question, what size cart do you have?
Let's go look at it. Homemade cart, is that what it is? It came with him. You think it can be fixed up? Oh, it can. I mean, I'll get new wheels and then sand it and paint it.
The only thing you need is the wheels.
Really? Is that right?
Hey, old guy, you kind of round too.
Say he's fat on that grass all summer.
Hold him real still, that way I can get a good— you see it? It's gonna be all right, I'm not gonna do anything crazy.
Yeah, you showed him first, didn't you?
And 36 there. See, a 16-inch collar would be what he would need. He is technically A large pony.
Okay. Yes. Yes. What are you doing with all these hearses?
Uh, this is the most that I've had in at one time. Normally I only get 2 in, but Disney World called me and had to do an emergency order, and it makes more sense for me just to fill up the tractor trailer.
Yeah.
So I ordered their carriage and I ordered 2 more hearses and a Cinderella carriage. You could go with these.
Yeah, those are much beefier. Here you go. All right, you give me a good deal. This is nice. Yeah. What are we looking for here?
I'm looking for small enough straps for you to use as hold bag straps. Okay, because most of them are big.
What's that?
Oh, it's a toy.
This is a big temptation for you right now.
I watched— I remember watching— I remember I watched Henry yesterday for money.
These the babies? These the young'uns?
His dad is actually a 5-time world champion in Holland.
Is he sold?
Yeah, he's got a deposit on him. He's 3 years old.
This one's full grown. Geez. Finished up at the harness store. I got out pretty clean. Suckered into only one extra thing. What would you call that, a whip? And that's because she convinced me, because she has a pink one. I'm saying, well, okay, you don't need one, but you gotta have a black one for a show. But now she can use that carriage even when she outgrows Blaze.
And you can use it too, when like, we're like, when you're filming. Like when I have my new horse, like if I ride down the road, you can hitch up Blaze and then you can ride next to me.
Next up Feed store. Huge feed store. Well, it's just the southern states, I think. We have one of these at home. Look at this tiny manure spreader. That's cool. Oh boy, get him away from the dog toys quick. On the road again. Did you get everything you needed, Lily?
Yeah.
Okay, good. Back home. Mom's made a beautiful dinner.
Asparagus.
We got our sweet potatoes, we baked them. And I'm most excited about this, it's our lamb harvest. Lamb is back on the menu, boys and girls. Don't jump up and down too much. And girls, do you like it?
And ponies.
My seasoning is so good. I already tried it, my seasoning is so good. Did 2 little eggs, we won't have many of those. Well, we have— we'll have 9. Tomorrow starts the high tunnel building. We're gonna do that Friday and Sunday. You don't want to miss that, guys. Stay tuned for that. And as always, happy day.
