All our Puppy Name Ideas that Aren’t Buck!

In this informal, family‑style vlog, Victor Justin Rhodes and his household walk viewers through a typical morning on their homestead. The video interweaves animal care (milking cows, feeding alfalfa pellets, checking mineral shavings, and discussing future poultry plans), DIY repairs (tightening a tractor steering rod, crafting a fence‑wire spring, and improvising a mineral‑shaving holder), and daily chores (switching ice packs, cleaning milk, and preparing soil). Amid the chores, the family debates names for a new puppy, ultimately leaning toward "Melvin" while considering alternatives like Buck, Chewie, and Pinky. The vlog also highlights their member‑only content platform, mentioning premium subscriptions, member questions, and upcoming resources. Throughout, the participants share personal anecdotes, discuss upcoming events (a play, a chiropractor visit), and reflect on the homestead’s vision, emphasizing hard work, consistency, and incremental improvement as keys to success.

Let's see it. Is it in your nail?
Mm-mm, it's right there.
Oh, right there, that thing? Yeah. Mr. Brown, I gave you your sweater and you put it on the floor.
What's going on with his splinter?
Let me see it. It's gone. Oh, you got it out? The thing is, I just want to get going. So I need my coat. Here, come on, let's go. Hey, there's my coat. I'm as bad as you, Mr. Brown. Leaving my coat about. Sorry, Royal. Sorry to give it to me. What do you think this is? What do you think this is, a belly rub, huh? You don't like a belly rub, do you? You like it? No, he doesn't like it. Come on, man, let's stay on vision. We made a deal. He's got a truck. He said, hey, will you go get me— get the truck? I said, yeah, if you'll play with it by the milk stanchion. Is that still the deal?
Yeah.
There it is. All right, bring it with you. Can you bring it with you? 7:45, 15 minutes to milking. I think the boys are going to get the cows. They're not very far away, so it doesn't take them very long. Y'all going to get the cows? A man, we gotta, uh, see this water for sure. It's almost empty. You wanted to walk around a little bit with it. Why don't you walk around with it at this time as I do these odds and ends, and then come to the milk area? Okay.
Okay.
I bet we can find a job for that thing.
Feeding the tractor cows.
Yes, you could do that. It's missing his cap.
Papa, after we put all the hay—
we have our brooder stall, and there we keep— I don't know if you can see in here, it's so dark. Here. Yeah, we're ready for chicks. Look, what about ducks this year? You want to get ducks? Yeah, meat ducks. Would you eat a duck?
Yeah.
What about a goose? What about a Christmas goose? Nah, I bet it'll be the best poultry we've ever tasted.
When are we gonna buy turkeys, Papa?
Oh, we're gonna buy turkeys this year too, man. We've caught up. We're ahead of the game with chickens. We're gonna have to grow 200, and we get to expand. We get to try some different things. We've never raised ducks for meat, or at least we never made it to harvest with them. And watch out, watch out, watch out! Is there apple cider vinegar over here? You want to pour the apple cider vinegar in? Got the cap on the bottom there. Pour the apple cider vinegar in there. I'll tell you when to stop. Keep going, keep going, keep going. That's probably good. A little health boost there. I've always heard of a Christmas goose food, so we're gonna try that. Uh, I'm thinking these geese are not for eating. One per flock for guarding, and he's been doing his job extra special lately, which is good. He's been a little more unhappy with us coming in here. Hey, look, that way. I do think it's mating season. Hey, hey. He's back. Actually, I think he thinks I'm his mate. Hey, hey, come here. I'm not your mate. I'm not your mate, buddy. I'm not your mate. I think it's mating season. Good morning. What's the matter? Look. Oh yeah, you're steering— your wheels— your steering rod's off. Yeah, so it's gotten loose.
I got the truck doing it.
Let's maybe get an adjustable wrench and just tighten that down. Can you get him off?
Want me to get him some alfalfa pellets?
Yeah, get him a little alfalfa pellets, maybe half a thing. It's for a reward. Good job getting them down here, my man. Okay, what do you got to do now? Okay, you're back with your wrench. It won't fit.
Well, that's not what you—
but I can get it.
You tighten this? No, no, I— that's how I fix my bike.
Really?
Yes. Okay, wait, but you gotta make sure it's in the right spot.
All right, it's 8 o'clock. The cows are down here. I better milk. There's one other thing I wanted to do this morning. And that's— I gotta get that mineral shaw up, but I gotta get away from Mr. Stud Muffin to stop flipping it. I think I have an idea. Okay, Mr. Brown, you gonna play around? Good.
Does he eat alfalfa pellets?
You could try. Now don't give him much though. I know he doesn't eat much. And in a minute you can give her all her 4 alfalfas. Yeah. Put it in that black bucket. All right, now get— look at her, look at her just going crazy. Yeah, give her, give her her force. The 5 scoops, 5 big scoops. Can you get the first? And the first one's always hardest. Good. All right, boys. Gideon's been doing good playing by me. All the kids, I know where they all are. This is great. Everybody's near me. Look at this rich soil though, from years gone by chicken garden. Gosh. Okay. Hey, hey, Mr. Brown.
What?
I'm gonna go up, you keep playing. Josiah, will you switch out my cows? I guess so. All right. Plus, you gave me quite a bit of milk this morning. Love passing that, love passing that. 100 people, 100 people are gonna get You Can Farm With my member area. That's incredible. That book is life-changing. Hey, did I hear a cowboy in here? No, no, you're not a cowboy.
We're waiting for Lulu to come in.
Oh, well, she's outside playing. Yep, that's right, milk. That's fun. You're gonna know exactly where that milk comes from, aren't you, buddy? Hey, where does milk come from? Cow. Can you milk a cow?
Yeah.
Show me how you milk a cow.
Milk cow. Can you milk my finger like a cow?
Is that how you do it?
You're good at that. You're good at that.
That's something else, isn't it? That's a special way to grow up right there. Hey, what you doing? You gonna do the milk for me?
Hey, Ryder, let's go.
Do you want me to help you or want me to just go back down? No, you can go back down. I'll bring it to you. All right, should I switch out the ice packs for you at least?
That would be nice.
All right.
I used to, uh, be ashamed of this. Seems like we can't get ahead in here, but I've since realized everybody got a room like this. Everybody. Our unfinished room out here. But, uh, I'll save Rebecca the pain. Come out here and tool around. So we cooled this milk off yesterday. We want to get it down to 40 degrees within an hour. We do that with ice packs and coolers. Now I'm gonna, uh, switch out these ice packs. I learned it's best to dry them off, set the dry ones out. Yeah, I didn't put them in the freezer yet. Why? Well, I'm gonna get the new ones out, put them in there. Come with me, guys, come with me. Put those in the cooler, and now I have room for old ones. You got this?
Yeah.
Okay, still at this area, huh?
Yeah.
Cool. What's the mission? What's the vision?
We made a long road.
No, I think you have a vision. Looks like you're building some kind of road.
Yeah, and we're getting— we went and got some more trucks.
What matters to me is vision. Goals. We all got goals, don't we? Mine is to milk this cow. For all she's worth. That's the short-term goal. Long-term is getting that healthy milk for these chiddlers. Their goal is to mine that precious soil, do something with it. I don't know what it is. They got goals. That's good. Besides putting them out, she wanted to go back in the stanchion. You're crazy, Flossie.
They're behind the greenhouse right now.
Okay, all right, I'm gonna check it out. Hey, what's the deal?
Playing.
Nice. You building some mountains?
No, this is actually a dirt pile. And then we're spreading dirt here so it can be another spot.
Okay, Mom will appreciate that when she goes to plant her flowers here. We're just gonna let them cook a little bit more. We don't want to cook them all the way though. You need all that hash?
I want more eggs.
You can ask nice.
Can I please have some more?
Sure, that's much better. Come over here if you want more eggs. I guess we're getting serious about getting this puppy because we're talking names. We haven't put down the deposits yet though. They got their eye on Melvin. Some of us kind of like the name Melvin.
We could name it Leonardo.
Gideon votes Luke. Mom votes Leonardo. That's kind of hard to say.
I'm not voting that.
Leonardo. 4 syllables? No thanks. Boots. That's a good name. Oh yeah, we could name it Boots. Hey, Boots is after Papaw.
I couldn't remember that name.
Why don't you like any of these awesome names?
We could name him Pinkney.
What'd he say?
Oh yeah. That's my dad's middle name.
Prank me.
And we could call him Pink.
He just wants to call it out.
I like that. We could call him Pinky.
No, I don't want to call him Pinky.
Come on.
He's stuck on Luke or Chewie. Uh-uh.
I don't like Chewie.
Me neither.
What about Vader?
No. Yeah. Sure, I like Vader.
You got the cold chick cream out?
You might have gotten it out, honey.
What about Little Boots?
Max, Bear, Charlie, Toby, Lucky, Cooper, Teddy, Loki, Rocky.
Okay, I think it came down to Melvin, Buck, but how many Buck names are going to be in 2020? You had a good point because of the movie called A-While.
You're going to take it to a dog park and you're going to name Buck and all the dogs are going to come.
Yeah, and what was the third runner-up? So there was Melvin, Buck, and, uh, a lot of names been thrown out. Chewy, Pinkney, Burl, Boulder.
Diesel.
Diesel. Okay, so I think everybody though out of their top 3 had Melvin in it. Yeah, so we're sticking with his OG name. Let's see if we can even put a deposit down, Beck. He might be gone.
He wasn't this morning, so—
oh, okay. And this means he's 9 weeks old. It probably means he's ready to go, like maybe this weekend.
Well, how many days until we're gonna go get him?
Well, it'd only be a couple days.
Oh my gosh, a couple days! It's 2 days! A couple days! 2 days! 2 days! 2 days! 2 days!
Rebecca, did you do it?
I did it!
Oh my. We did it.
It's on the non-refundable deposit, so—
Now what?
I guess we'll wait and see. They'll probably email me.
We don't have a few things to mail.
Okay. Please don't start your book work yet.
He started.
Let's finish picking up. Josiah, put it down please. Let's deal with these clothes. Come on, Lily.
I don't have to.
Never seen kids so anxious to do the book work.
Mom, I told you that.
Okay, Lily, go separate those. Okay, well then let's find something else. He looks so big right there. He's as tall as you are right there.
No, I'm not. No, I'm not.
He's pulling away. You pulling away from Mama's love?
That's because you're heavier and the couch weighs down.
Oh, are you saying she's fat? No. Oh, he's digging his hole deeper, isn't he? A lot of great member texts this morning. One, I totally forgot yesterday. I should speak to this. I'm giving her the links. I did that video on the fireplace yesterday. I need to go update the video. I'm giving like the links to all the— like where we got this. You want to know where we got this? This is amazing. So most of these are dinky donk, and we've gone through so many until we finally, finally found a good one. This protector, I'll talk about where we get the, uh, thermometer.
I think the last one we bought, I bought it at like Target on clearance.
Yeah.
And it lasted like 5 years.
I know, who knew you would get a hardcore heavy-duty one?
It was on clearance because it was like at the end of the season. Yeah, and we bought that— the log carrier—
this thing, this is awesome.
Um, as a wedding present.
That was a wedding present. So we linked something similar because it's not— doesn't exist anymore. But what's so cool about this? Yeah, I think we've had leather work done on this because we couldn't with, you know, with the strap broke. But anyway, they have these little straps to hang it on this and then big straps to like— let's say you're carrying your wood in, it's great. Of course you can carry a bunch more than that, and then you don't get your clothes dirty and you can just carry a bunch. I put my kit together of all the different stuff we use. I'll leave that in this description. I'm gonna put it in last and I'm gonna text it to the member. And guys, text access to me. I love this, interacting with you guys on an individual basis. I do it every morning as I upload footage and work on my edit. Uh, there are limited spots in Premium because I want to give everybody adequate attention. That's not Premium people, that's Mama. What are you saying? She's right over there. Are you like trying to get a word in while I'm editing? Because it's her making a video.
Before, and I was just getting you the information.
We do We do that.
But I am trying to text somebody to get to— I have to ask somebody a question.
We do do that. I'll seriously be right here and we'll be texting back and forth. Because sometimes it's better than just like interrupting.
Well, it's nice if we have to say something and we don't want the kids to know what we're saying.
Yes, that's handy too. That's handy too. All right, well, stop texting me for a second.
Okay, well, I'm not texting you.
People are gonna think this—
I'm gonna text a friend.
Okay, well, people think People are gonna start thinking this is member text and poor Justin, how's he gonna keep up with it all? No, people behave themselves. They, they just ask pertinent individual questions and it's, it's great. I like to help people in a pinch and that's what it's perfect— that's what it's there for and that's what it's great for. When Mr. Google Pants doesn't have the answer, you can't figure out which answer to go with, that's where this comes in perfect. Another, another person asked, uh, you know, about sheep, if they should take— if they should take on this sheep that needs to be bottle fed and it's being given to them. And we went through all the different scenarios, you know, vaccinated and unvaccinated, all that stuff. Well, that's kind of individual. You can't find that information in textbook or, um, from Mr. Google Pants. So that's where I come in. But anyway, that's going to be opened up to you guys towards the end of the month. Stay tuned. Jonah's calling me over here. I'm gonna need a man when I break out the camera.
Well, do you notice how this one's getting so many more views than this one? And I think it's because I colored it and I got that crazy a good picture of it.
This is your video. That could be it. It could be the title. It could be the how long people are watching. You just never know. It could be the thumbnail. It's good that you're studying it, trying to get better and messing with some things.
Um, color my next one.
Okay. All right, Rebecca, I'm going to work. Text me if you need me. It's great working at home. It really is. It's great working at home. We wouldn't have it any other way, would we, bud? Alright. Oof.
Made Chewbacca's gun from Star Wars.
Nice. Watch this.
Watch.
It's a crossbow. Does this— are you serious? Shooting yourself.
Here, I'll get it to work this time.
Okay.
You have to do everything right or it will not work.
What? It worked! Good job.
I drilled 2 holes and I made a fence wire spring.
How'd you make a spring out of a fence wire?
You get something like circle, how big you want your spring, then you get your fence wire and then you just wrap it around that and then you cut it at the end and pull it off and it springs.
You have a hint, you have an axle for a screw, you have a—
that's to hold the spring in.
Oh, this is brilliant. You have your handle and you have your cross, but what's this for?
Just to make it look good.
Just, okay.
It would have been a gun.
All right. That's the dog people. They're arranging an appointment for pickup.
I mean, I guess like, do you guys, do you deliver? But did we want to go? Because I was like, we could pay for delivery if that was something you guys did.
Well, the vlog's gonna have to wait. Boy, it's been one of those weeks. I think 3 days this week, Rebecca, we've had to go to town in the Sorry, sorry to you guys. That means not as many projects on the farm. Sorry to myself. Sorry to you guys. Hopefully we're gonna be able to slow down. Oh yeah, well, Rebecca found out the puppy. They're probably wanting to know about the puppy. Sunday, Sunday, 12 o'clock. So that'll go into Monday's vlog.
Yes, we're gonna have, um, Melvin. Melvin's coming It's home. So actually, shoot, I was ordering things.
Yeah, we gotta go. We gotta go to the chiropractor. Yes, they look good.
So many things to do. Look great.
Oh yeah, that's the beautiful one. Oh, she didn't even look. Am I the handsome one? If she's the beautiful one, what does that make me? All right, we got to get the kids. They need to go up to Grandma's. Kids, we gotta go. You gotta go up to Grandma's. Let's go. All right, back from the chiropractor. Rebecca doesn't have to go again. You're just straight, straight. I gotta go in only 4 weeks. It was every week and then it was every 2 weeks, now 4 weeks. So things are looking up. I'm gonna have to edit. Jonah, what you doing? Um, playing Okay, you gonna do the chores?
Yeah.
Okay, so maybe I can— you know what, I'm gonna have to get as much as I can done. I'm gonna stop at least in enough time to let's get that mineral show up there. And I had that idea to keep Stud from flipping it. I'm done with the edit, exporting it now. Grandma's here, going to play. The ladies are going to a play tonight.
Yes.
What play y'all gonna go see?
Cinderella.
Yeah, Faith's in it, our niece. Are you excited?
Yeah. Do I ask, is it Cinderella 3, the movie? And like, and Mom is like, no, it's—
You excited?
I'm excited to see my niece in a play. I hope that the other actors are as good as she is. She's a very good actress and singer.
She is, yeah.
Like me!
I like Lily.
Like you, huh?
The cousins.
We didn't know. We didn't know you had those talents. Shepherd's pie. Oh, our beef with potatoes. We're cheating, we're cheating. Well, cheating off the GAPS diet tonight. Going, going, uh, being naughty. She wants to make sure everybody eats it. We're naughty tonight. The boys like—
so bad eating white potatoes.
I got that one more thing to do, don't I? It's a good supper, the ladies are gone. Let's see if we can't do something about this flipping mineral shawl. And I mean flipping, like it flips because it's got nothing rubbing on it. Well, gosh, are you guys okay? That was quite the fall there. All right, let's get you a little better. All right, stay there. Okay, could not find the pin. I thought we had some extra pins, but maybe we don't. So I don't know exactly sure how— sure, so I don't know exactly how effective this is going to be. See, as long as this pole stays in We want it to be removable because we use it to lift up this flap. We use it as a prop stand. It's multi-purpose. We're losing— we're missing one of these pins. So technically, if this comes out, this isn't going to be any good. Here, I'll show you. I think it'll be worth it. I mean, they're gonna have to push that out and then flip it. That's two combos. I think we got some time to order some. Oh my God. Note to self: bring ear muffins next time. Well, first of all, he'll scratch on this instead of that, and then if he goes to overturn it, it's gonna catch right there. Boom! Minimal damage. Minimal damage. And I just thought of it, it's gonna keep them from scooting this all the way over to the edge anyway. I like it. I think it's gonna work. Look at that beautiful sunset. Just a little change here. Just a little change. Just a little change. Maybe 1%. You change 1% every day, doesn't take long to double. Hard work, consistency. Hard work and consistency. That is the secret to success on homesteading. Not necessarily knowledge, that helps. Hard work and consistency, you improve your knowledge, you improve your systems, you improve yourself 1% every day.
