SPEAKER A and the family behind the series Rooted move sheep to fresh pasture for the first time in months, then test a live-stream setup with a Bazooka Jerry camera. The day mixes real farm work, mobile milking with cows named Phyllis and Flossie, and a visit to a neighbor's goat operation.

The film crew is here. The chibblers are up and at 'em getting their snack. Randy's shooting a behind the scenes for his vlog today. What's your vlog? Randy Climbin'?
Randy Climbin'.
Do you have shoes, my man? Let's put eyes on them. I don't see them, Mr. Brown. There's somebody's boots. It's probably your kid's boots. She's probably good.
Yeah, that's awesome.
She probably puts her boots back where it makes sense, right outside the door. Yeah, I don't see any boots. Mr. Brown, where are your shoes? I thought you said you knew where they were. Look, both of you guys, my boots are always right here or always right outside the door. Yours are at the treehouse? Somebody says old barn. Somebody says treehouse. Filming a new episode of Rooted today. Also moving the sheep. It's gonna be a very exciting day. Well, I don't see them in the barn. Wait, here's Josiah's. You guys ready to get moved today? Best day of your year. See a coat. See some boots. Are they the boots? They're not the boots. There's a boot over there. That's not it. And here, playhouse. This is sad. The guys are here ready to film. I want Gideon to be a part of it, but I cannot find his shoes. These are snowshoes. Maybe he'll wear those in a pinch. Do they want to capture this lighting right now? What he calls his blue light? Well, we're burning blue light right now. Find his shoes. Gideon, come on, they're about to start filming. Come on, Gideon, come on. I got the snow boots. You'll have to wear those till we find the rubber boots. Okay. Okay, here you go. Whoa, they're, they're walking way out there. Come on, Mr. Brown, we gotta keep up. Ben is directing Gideon and Lily for a walk, recorded walk. What's the chances Teddy's gonna liven up the mood? It's supposed to be somber.
Andy in every shot.
Hey Gideon, could you go down there and then walk up and give your dad a hug like you did? We wrapped up shooting in the field. What do you think? Behind the scenes for you today, Randy.
It's pretty cool to see how the sausage is made.
Is it, is it, is it, Matt, is it what you imagined?
Uh, not at all.
How is it different?
Well, uh, I'm kind of impressed that Ben plans everything. Yeah, right, like every shot he has an idea of how it's eventually going to be, which is— yeah, the foresight for that is pretty crazy.
He has a shot list in his head. Yeah.
Yeah, because he has, you know, the about what's happening every hour on paper, but then there's probably like what's happening every second in his head, right?
Yep. Big day on the farm. We're going to be milking back in our mobile milking station in the field. I'm excited. Different change of scenery. This is going to be nice. Let's put Phyllis in this this time because she, she stands better. Oh look, here goes nothing. Getting the bromance over. They haven't done this. Come on, come on. This is— they're going to be a little rusty. Whoops. All right, we get— if we get him first, we can get Hamburg. Look, it's like he knows. Stud, you're making us look good, buddy. Thank you. Hamburgers coming right after him. Of course, you don't have to pull their tails. They like the new grass. We're gonna put Phyllis— she doesn't stand as well. We're gonna put her in the stanchion. Flossie, guys, let's feed Flossie first at the corner. I don't think anybody's listening to me. Yeah, but yeah, put Flossie at the corner. Good. And then we'll put Phyllis in there. We'll tie up Flossy right here. Hey, Phyllis, Phyllis, here. Where are you going? Good. Super nice to be back milking on the grass. There's no like poop on the grass. My knees are gonna get greened up. This is nice. I actually put Polly in after the milking from habit, but she's— she needs to be weaned. I know. So drink as much as you want. I know this is your last day, and she's drinking it like it's her last day too, isn't she? You need help or you got it? We're gonna always let Phyllis out. She's the subordinate cow. We wouldn't want her to get Frosty come over here and her not be able to get out. Oh, come on, you gotta lift your head up. Come on, honey, lift your head up. You've forgotten how to do it. There you go. Now do it. There you go. This one's the leader. Come on, come on. There you go. Come on, this way. Good, perfect. Look, she's running. As if you aren't full enough, honey. Jacob's gonna have his work cut out for him on this next one because we're getting these sheep out. And from my experience, Jono will lead with alfalfa. I'll I'll push. They're just gonna pass Jonah right up. You guys are sure bleeding. We got Randy, also a shepherd. This particular show is about one of our goals on the Great American Farm Show that we didn't talk about, that we didn't really feel like we achieved. So it felt like a failure, and we didn't really like fully realize it wasn't till 3 years later. And Randy has something to do with that. That's why he's here. Randy's here to help shows that story. But he's also the token, uh, farm visit, and he's also the minus 60 Minnesota. You guys have heard the classic Great America Farm Tour story where we were hunting a place, but it's because of Randy being content in minus 60 Minnesota. Minus 30 this year.
I've never been in mine.
We're like, how can we not get be content here. It's in low 60s all week, right? Okay, they're ready. Jonah, you got the pail? We don't even have the pail. Okay, here's the pail, here's the pail. I'll keep them from going back. Arun, will you get the stragglers? Go wide. Uh-oh, this could be a mess. Help them, Shepherd. Shoot, they're not gonna know to obey these lanes. Okay, these moms will. Let's get them caught up. Come on, come on, come on. There's at least one mom here that knows the drill, so that's good. Come on, look at these little lambs scrambling on the hay. They're surprisingly compliant, these little guys. We got to keep mom in the, in the fence though. The fence is not on, it's just a dummy. Come on, mom, come on. I know, right? They're staying right on her, aren't they? Good, good, good. Catch her in here. You got a shot, Jacob? That's movie stuff. Come on, Mom. Come on, Mom. Come on. Now they're speeding up a little bit. Yeehaw! This is what I'm talking about. The cows just trampled this and the sheep are all over it. This lily or whatever it is. This is what they like, what the cows don't like. Beautiful. I just can't believe this. This is so amazing. They're just going to town on this rare lily patch. Cows just trampled it. Took a break from outside filming. I got a little Henry. How you doing, buddy? Are you gonna be the star of the show? This is a first, they're interviewing the kids. Yeah, you like it?
Well, my granny's name was Bernal.
Mom's nursing. Randy's figuring out this thing. As the tech guy, one of his assignments is to get us live doing our live streams from my— what I call my Bazooka Jerry, the big boy. It's our brass. It's a good thing I hired Randy to do this because we've had some problems. He's had to end up— the Canon software for it didn't work. He's got this hardware from Best Buy and that seems to be working, but only in that port. Now let's see it though, Randy. You gotta show the viewers. Did it really just stop? Are you serious? It says one moment. Well, you're having a good attitude about it. All right, I found it. There it is. Look, it is working. Okay, that is so kind of clear. Why is it blurry? Are you on autofocus?
No, I didn't mess with any of that.
Oh, there it is. That's better. So that's going to be so much better than just that little Jerry cam right there. The test is now try it with the webinar software though, buddy. Yeah, he got it working in Wirecast, which is our editing software— not editing software, our webinar software. Let me take my iris off. Let me take the blue light off so you can see. There it is. Oh, it's smooth, man. Nice. We're taking our webinar game to the next level. So we'll be premiering these Rooted shows, and we premiere, uh, and we do webinars for our members Uh, Ben is gonna set up a nice, nice lighting system in here. We're gonna be filming from our webinars from our camera. It's gonna look really nice. Beck, we gotta, we gotta go visit this other farm in about 45 minutes.
I know, I'm just placing an order on Thrive Market.
Okay, we're gonna kind of do a mock farm tour. We're gonna go see a friend about 3 miles away and kind of reenact what it was like, you know, kind of reenact a farm tour visit. The graders are having me turn off the water. They're putting in a yard hydrant over by our shed. Well pump, water pump. They got you working the shovel again, Fred? Oh yeah, that's all they let me run. We're gonna drain it out. Hey Gideon, what'd you tell them when they interviewed you? Nothing. What'd you tell them about the farm tour?
When they asked you a question or no, when they started, did you do that?
Well, it was too hard because they weren't all yes or no questions.
He said that when at first he was only gonna say yes or no questions.
Our shy one, he had a plan.
He had a plan, but I'm only gonna say yes or no.
We're actually at my neighbor's now. We're doing a mock farm tour here, but we're actually getting a really nice tour here.
So, so this is This is a one stall, but I've broken it up into kidding stalls because I have 9 babies ahead. I've got 5 does and 4 of them have kidded, and we've got one left. So they were in here separately so they could kid separately.
Where are they now?
They're all over here.
Stephanie, there's only one thing cuter than a goat baby— a lamb baby.
A lamb baby. All right, I gotta open this gate kind of funny here.
She's got her nice guard.
Let's stay in.
Let's stay in.
Nobody's gonna come visit you.
Come on, he's nice to people, I guess.
Come on in.
Okay, thanks.
He's a Congolese dog.
Yeah, now I feel like we're at the Carl Sandburg.
I know, right?
Look, I don't know, they're pretty cute. Now you used to be a goat boy. You used to be a goater. Don't deny it. He denies it now. Used to be a goater. He used to come over here and goat sit. Goat and, uh, we'd farm sit, milk the cow and the goats. You had your little overalls. You were gonna be a goat farmer. Yeah, you remember that? You try to forget that.
Yeah.
Hey, big guy. Hey, big guy. What do you do with all these goats?
Well, I use the babies, uh, to keep their moms in milk. And then at the end of the growing season, the ones that I really like the condition of and, and want to sell maybe for breeding stock, even though they're not registered, I would do that. But also we eat them. So we, we, um, they're nutrient dense. They're grain-free.
Good for you.
They've got a 16-mineral buffet today.
We'll trade you some goat for some sheep.
Yeah, we'll love some lamb.
Would love that.
Yeah, let's do it. Let's do it. Stephanie's gonna put us to work. We're gonna move your A-frame. You're, you're slowly making your way to that gate, is that what I heard right?
Yes, we're gonna get them in with the cows. We're gonna get them in and they're gonna rotate behind the cows.
But we can't go all the way because then they won't find their house tonight, will they? So we're just gonna go a little bit, one day at a time. Josiah's got the feet out.
We need a couch rock that big to go swimming in.
That would work. I'd do that.
Where'd you get this?
That'd be fun. I got it off Craigslist.
I paid $100.
Hey, we could do a big ice bath in that. Big group family ice bath.
That's going to be my swimming—
no, that's an ice bath. Okay, is that all it's going to take is two of you? Okay, good.
Okay, wait, one of you guys push up on the front corner to get it to head that way.
There you go. Good. Direct them, Stephanie.
Yeah, if you push it that way, and Lily, you push forward and he'll push that way.
She got a bunch of eggs this morning. Yeah, she's got a bunch of eggs. Yeah, Grandma is finishing up supper. We got pork burgers from the farm. She's getting some cheese on that. What do you think?
Yeah, I can't wait to have it.
I've never had a pork burger. So film day's over. What do you think?
I mean, we've got another big day tomorrow, but I think those guys are work—
worked out.
I mean, especially the guy who's got the big, uh, rig. He's carrying that around all day. Yeah, that's tough work.
Well, we've had a good successful day. Tomorrow is going to be a huge day. We're gonna go actually see the haulers, and we're filming a bit about You know, working with them a little bit. And I think we're going to start with this episode, start talking about the amazing homestead community that we have. Let's just go check on the sheep and the cows real quick. The cows are happy. Everybody's happy. But you're kind of waning, aren't you? Yeah, we've gotten a little too far away from Mama. We better get back to the house.
