Baby Calf Shivering in the Ice | Quick Fix

In this family‑farm vlog, Justin and his relatives respond to a newborn calf that is shivering in freezing weather. They dry and warm the calf, provide alfalfa and milk, and let the mother nurse it. While doing so, they juggle a series of cold‑weather chores: moving a desk, pulling water troughs, checking fences, herding cows and sheep, and feeding hay. The family members—Rebecca, Jonah, Gideon, Josiah, Mom, and others—coordinate tasks, share jokes, and improvise with a tripod and video‑editing setup. After the hard work, they prepare a hearty meal of beans, shredded beef, cultured cream, and coleslaw, celebrating the warmth of the fire and the comfort of togetherness. The vlog blends practical farm care, teamwork, and casual conversation, highlighting how they adapt to icy conditions while caring for animals and each other.

I want him to lay down so you get warm.
Huh?
I can cuddle him if he's laying down, but not when he's not, like standing up. Okay.
He is shivering.
I want to move him.
Rebecca, we're gonna have to pull this desk in before it gets wet. You think it's off-gassed enough? It's crazy. It's icing out there. Well, I'm gonna be glad I have Sally now.
What would you do if you didn't have Sally?
Tripod right here so I can do quick narrations. Yeah, I like it. Nice backdrop. Put some interesting stuff right there. More interesting. Oh, Rebecca, look, the— when we put the map on the roof, we're totally going to be able to see it in the shot. It's icing out there. Rebecca said there's a cave cricket in the bathtub. Sure enough. Oh boy, do not lose this cricket.
There we go.
That's one mission you don't want to fail at. Killing the Crave Cricket for your wife. Okay, you changed your mind again? You don't want to go, then you want to go. You don't want to go, then you want to go. So we going? Whoa!
You like all of them?
I've been pretty tough for a couple of days, but just had a moment. My dad would be really excited about this. This would be big news. He would probably call and make sure we were staying warm. So, Pop, we're staying warm. The little experiences we had together, you know, the funeral, we talk about the big stuff, the feats of strength, the main thing we're going to remember, but What about the phone calls when it's sleeting? Hey, who's got the tumbler? Okay, let's go. Hey, Mr. Brown, be careful, it's slippery. We got the cows in. We're gonna switch it up a little bit though before it gets too nasty. Let's get hay. Also, for the Luchadors, get a flake of this hay. Winter hit just like that.
Funny in here.
All right, come on, get in there.
Oh, it's on our seats.
Not funny right now.
No, Papa, we were like working at—
through the hay end. How you guys doing? There you go, Josiah. That's good. Good boy. Mr. Brown, why is your Y-bike right there in the middle of the path?
You play a game?
Okay, y'all going with— wait, now I did— no, wait, I didn't do that first so y'all would go in, leave me to milk all by myself. Mr. Brown, you going in?
Yeah, because I'm full.
Is it just you and I? You and I, buddy. Oh no, pick up an apple, bring it out the door because they get in there and they bug Mom to death, make huge messes. Jonah, have you given her any alfalfa? Okay, you start giving her alfalfa, I'll start cleaning her up.
I wanted to lay down so you get warm. Huh, I can cuddle him if he's laying down, but not when he's not.
Okay, he is shivering.
I want to move him.
Maybe put him in the stall. Maybe some alfalfa and some hay.
All right, come on. No, he didn't.
No, he didn't.
She was in way, way worse.
All right, now, um, he's got some hay. Get into my alfalfa in here to dry it off. And he probably just needs to get a good nurse. Maybe I'll just get the first batch and let him have the— did he just kick at you? Gosh, buddy, we're trying to keep you warm. Done milking the first First round. Okay, so maybe a gallon-ish, gallon and a quarter maybe. Normally what we do is bring the calf out. She's holding back, she's holding back for the calf. So normally we bring the calf out, he gets a sip, she's dropped more milk, we get another half a gallon. Today though, since he's shivering, let's let him have the rest of the milk. Okay, Jonah, is he still shivering? I don't think so. No, wait a little bit, wait a little bit. Well, I mean, he's not shivering constantly.
But when I went to get him, he was just standing there waiting to get him.
Okay, well, he hadn't nursed since yesterday.
No, but—
so that's going to help him, I think. So then let's just let her out and let him nurse. Let's get you back out with everybody else. Come on, come on, you're full. You've been eating something this Morning.
Look how much drier I made them, Papa.
Yeah, and Jonah dried him off. That'll help.
But none has to go out in this wet environment.
Here, let him nurse. It's okay. She's found some extra alfalfa there. He's nursing. It's fine.
Can I get some for the cat?
No, I don't want to start the cats on that. We let the cats be around and milked for the cats. With Violet, remember that? And then they would just come and bug us, get kicked by the cows. Annoying.
And then we got these.
I'm not starting that. No, it was enough break between cows. The cats totally forgot about it, I think. I'm starting that up again.
I know they were, and Laurel would eat it too.
I'll tell you what, if you have a bowl, you could get some and take it up to their porch.
Yeah, that's what I was gonna do. I wasn't gonna—
that's fine. Some folks say it's not good to feed cats milk. Well, this is different. This is grass-fed, this is raw, and this is A2-A2 milk, which is easier to digest. We've never had an issue feeding it to Laurel. She ain't gonna let you know. She ain't gonna let you milk like that. This ain't Violet.
Let's see, let's see. Okay, let's see.
All right. This is our hot wire. We don't need funny business today. Nobody needs to be getting out today. She's a good mama, she stops to nurse. Come on, Miss Thing, come on. I've been editing a bit. Okay, you guys are going outside?
Yeah.
Okay, let's get everything going. Mom's been ironing. Hey, the more you wear, Gideon, The longer you'll be outside. I see you brought the iron out by the fire.
Yes, I wasn't doing it in the bedroom where I normally do it. I guess it's too cold back there.
All right, man, I think this video editing is so healthy. Recapping my dad's story, planting a tree for him. It's the little things, like that one clip where he said, hey Justin, when I was walking in the door. That dude named me. Something special about being called by your parent, by somebody who named you. And now there's only one left that can do that.
The smoothie time.
You're making smoothies, you and Mom?
Yeah.
Fast Freddy, yo, you going with? Heck no, you going? You're pretty pink. Carhartt jacket.
I just bought her that.
Mom's soaking some beans. That's a lot of beans, honey.
Yeah, the recipe called for 8 cups of soaked and cooked beans, so I thought 8 bags— 8 cups of dried beans would equal 8 cups of soap. I'm now the proud owner of like 24 cups of beans now that are— because they expand.
All right, you guys ready? Come on! I wish we had Phil-o-vision because it's cold. Cousin Daniel and El Manto, well, you got your furry coat just in time. Where's the water trough for the Where the cows are going.
It's there. Okay. Get off of me! All right.
Oh, it's got the automatic water on there. Is that frozen?
I just can't find the right end.
That goes down there cuz that's the quick release. It's not frozen. Gideon, please stop.
Nice.
Hey, let's straighten the fence up. Look how it's sagging. Boy, that's a mess. Did you set the fence down for the cows? Okay, let's get them. Wait, Jonah, we're making a mistake. We gotta get the— we gotta get Moose up. We gotta put the calf up first. Well, the calf's just fine. We made a good call giving him some milk. Here, open this up quick. Here he comes. Open it up, Jonah. Can you help him bring him in? Here, here, we'll do it over here. Josiah, here we go. All right, herd him this way. Mom went in, calf goes in, and then go herd mom out. There we go. Good job, guys. Now let's get the, uh, cows over. Watch this, watch this. Okay, I'm gonna turn it back on.
No!
There we go. What's the matter?
On the ground. I didn't—
oh, it's connected right there. You guys ready to get the cows over? She does. Come on, here comes Floss. Oh my gosh, he ain't gonna let her beat him to it. Love it. Cows on new grass, 15 degrees outside, heads down eating. All right, let's put the line up, go disconnect the water, get some Energizer over here. We did that pretty fast because that's still filling. I meant to put the waterer on the lower side. You got to disconnect it, honey, not just turn it off.
Look at— and then can you bring me upstairs?
That cold?
Sure.
Lily, hurry! Right here.
You behave in there though, okay? Okay. Hey, we got one bit the dust. It's cold. Okay, scoot over, big guy. You're funny. When it's 15 degrees outside is not the time for a full-on driving lesson. Although you guys will learn how to drive a car in Sally.
We're over there, I think.
Yep, let's go move the sheep now. Okay, see our 3 nets? Let's go one over. Did you come back out, Mr. Brown? Moose has got them on the run.
Yeah, he's exercising them. He's their exercise teacher.
Guys, we— big moves, did it less than 1 hour. Good job. Come on in, shut the door. See how quiet we got? An hour till 5. Should I take them back out? We'll go downstairs, start making reels, you know, with handles.
It's probably so cold.
We should just do that tomorrow. We're gonna need it by tomorrow.
The best day.
It's not the best day for a project.
Tomorrow it's gonna be at least like 40, I think.
Tomorrow it's gonna be 40. Let's bank our reels tomorrow.
Yeah, it's like, um, let's look at the weather and see what it says. It feels like 13 degrees outside. So tomorrow the high is like 38 or 40.
That's much better.
So why don't you wait till tomorrow?
Okay. Yeah, we'll just do the minimum in this butt cold.
Yeah, it's just too cold.
All right, uh, we've got to make way for the beans. We got our beef, shredded beef, cultured cream. I'm just— hey, you got your coleslaw. You've been crazy about coleslaw lately. What, what's the matter?
It's just delicious.
Are you the crazy coleslaw lady now?
Right now I'm the crazy baking lady too. Okay, it's just so good together. They're like, like, this is homemade.
It's a nice—
I thought the crazy sheep lady.
The crazy sheep lady.
Yeah, we need you to be that again.
I can be that when it's not 13 degrees outside.
Well guys, isn't this nice? It's nice and cozy in here with the fire. We're gonna have a nice warm meal together. This is really good. This is like comfort food or something, Beck.
Maybe that's why I'm craving this. Maybe it's the most delicious thing ever. I know, the baked beans and the coleslaw and the meat.
Oh, so good.
Hey, you said everything now!
We did say it at the same time because it's so good.
So good.
