Barn House Kitchen RENOVATION Begins

Victor and his family start renovating their barn-house kitchen while managing farm work: milking cows, butchering chickens, and harvesting cabbage. They're building a temporary kitchen setup and planning a walk-in cooler, but face delays sourcing cabinets and countertops.

Kitchen reno, kitchen renovation coming. Starts today. We're cleaning this out, getting rid of the clutter, getting rid of everything we don't need, setting up a kitchen, temp kitchen in there and maybe outside. Christy's coming to babysit the kids. Grandma's coming to help Rebecca and myself get ready for this. Getting ready for a walk-in cooler construction next week. Big-time renovation slash construction. Well, you may recall that our sea monsters here, Cornish Cross meat chickens, uh, aren't gaining weight like they have in the past. We actually put off butchering one week. But looking good. It's going to be a really good tasty meat. I think they're getting more forage. I mean, look what they did here. Look what they did in here to this lamb's quarter. We've tried adding more feeders, soaking, uh, 24/7 access, uh, and even a new batch of feed that came yesterday, which Putting it off a week wasn't the end of the world. They get more grass and we have more availability with our friends, so it's going to be a bigger butchering party than it was before. So I'm excited about that. That's a sample feed. I'm going to work with Reedy Fork. We're going to test this a bit. And to see if it's quite possibly that, maybe a different mix or something. So we'll see what happens. The boys practically begged me to do the chores. What'd that look like, Jonah?
Uh, I was asking you if we can do all the chores.
Why do you want to do all the chores this morning?
So we can give you a break.
Oh, that's sweet of you. Why do you want to give me a break?
Because you milk 7 times a day— I mean a week.
7 times a week, non-stop. Thank you. I have a hard time letting go, but I should let them. Okay, good luck. That's how my dad and his family would wean or would dry off a cow. Granny would have him, the child, milk, which they don't do as good of a job getting it all out, which is good. It means you're not calling upon as much milk, which means the natural process is saying, "I don't have to produce this much milk. I don't have to produce this much milk." And they dry out. I might get a break from milking. Doesn't mean I get a break from working. Let's do these dishes and make— ooh, and make Bulletproof Coffee kind of at the same time. We've got our honey, coconut oil, butter, collagen, and a splash of vanilla. Well, certainly could have gotten away with a half a gallon jar, I think. What's up? There's manure on the side of the ladder.
Will you come make sure it's okay?
Absolutely. Okay, so this one's clean. You've been milking that side, or just— I see it. And this side.
Yeah, that means it's all wasted.
There's some manure on her udder. Yeah, you've probably grabbed it. So let's go pour that, what you've gotten, into the pigs. Wash your hands. I'll give a good udder. What? I know, but there'll be more. She's got plenty more. That's not even a half a gallon. Okay, don't beat yourself up too bad. You caught it, that's what counts. And you came and got me. These boys are showing true responsibility. Sure, it'd have been nice if they would have caught that before, but they, uh, they caught it nonetheless and came and got me. Just moving the hose around to heat it up a little bit. Yes, he's good. Here you go, some water. All right, you already got some more for the reservoir. Good deal, guys. All right, let's try this, Lily. Is it gonna splash like crazy? What happened? She stepped in it. No. Okay, I'm really— maybe I'm gonna have to help. What happened?
I don't know how it got on there. It just got on there.
Okay.
Okay. All right, it's okay, Joy.
Go pour that to the pigs. Here, I'll pour it into them here and wash it for you. I mean, it happens to me. This stuff happens to me. I don't know if it's them. So if somebody got it between their legs— did she kick at it?
Okay, she kicked at it and I splashed it over.
Oh, okay.
It's okay. You know why?
This is the best way All right, that's true.
Mama's saying it's the best way to learn.
It's true.
Here, Jonah, you know what counts is that you came up here when something got on it. You didn't just try to wipe it off with a cloth. You noticed it. You're doing good. What was your saying you were telling them, Mom?
If you don't fail, how can you learn? So, Brené Brown.
Brené Brown.
Daring greatly.
You don't fail, how can you learn? So good. Thank you for coming up and bringing that. If you want to taste this right away, you need to put some ice in it. Yay! This is the reservoir milk. Let's see it. Yay, good job! Let's get the boys their reservoir tank, check on them. Does she look super full?
She's full.
Yeah, she hasn't been milked for 24 hours. All right, we're weaning. Oh, you didn't give her a full batch of alfalfa, did you? Okay, no, she doesn't need to have that. She needs to have half, so she's probably eating about half. We have to cut her ration in half to start, uh, drying her off. Okay, let's pick the cabbage, guys.
Yeah, look how big it is!
Nice! Holy smokes! Kiss it! Give it a kiss! Oh, oh, Lily! Oh, oh, Mr. Brian getting two kisses! It's a huge Cabbage. All right, pull that on up.
You have to help us.
I'm gonna help you. We're gonna have the biggest cabbage in the world.
Just shred the outer leaves, throw it to your birds.
Uh-oh, there's a bug right there.
Yeah, I know, they'll like that too. All right, so we're just peeling off the bug-infested outer layers. I found the cabbage. Because you're ahead, and that's after we peeled it. Yeah, awesome. Good job. Wash that and then shred it up. Billy, you are shredding that perfect. Good job. Is this it? Yes, you guys did it. Wow, is that the beginning right there, Rebecca? Yes, temporary kitchen shelves, but those will also go into our cool room when we're done. Good job, Jonah. Good job, Josiah. Here's you guys some coffee. Getting one of our stainless steel tables over here, normally used for butchering. Not gonna use as a kitchen counter, isn't it, Rebecca?
Yep.
Well, first things first, we got to get these desks out of here and out of the way. Hey, cool guy, what, you packing for Christy? Yeah, I think she'll probably take them swimming. Let's take this desk. Where can we put my desk? Right here? Yep, there's the outlet.
There's dirt all up underneath. How dirt got on there, I don't know. It's like the weirdest thing.
Here we go. Let's take this around. Let's get this hose to the beautiful one. Look who's here.
Hi.
Hey, Christy.
Good. Y'all excited about this renovation? I mean, I'm excited for it to be done, the finish, not the process. I don't know if I'm excited about the whole process. Because we're also butchering chickens this week, so you know how it is. We like to stack it, really stack it in. Holler life. Um, we can flip it up, we can flip it to the side, I don't care. I really don't care, whatever.
Let's do what we're doing.
Oh, it's hot out there. Start working on this desk. Just had to take a break from clearing the desk. Jason, so the land is helping us build the cold room, gave us a list of supplies. Just ordered them, Rebecca, just ordered them all but save one, and that's not available in store. What are you guys working on?
I'm just kind of putting up a faux backsplash. To remember. Just a plastic.
Oh.
Just to kind of keep— because you know, we're gonna be preparing food here.
Okay.
Prevent it just from getting on the wall.
Okay. Grandma's here. Real work done now. Hey, you going through stuff?
I am. I am just cleaning out everything and—
Good.
Okay, I'm gonna go back at getting this taken down. Wow, okay, Rebecca, one less item in here. You're only bringing half of that back.
Yeah, and then we're gonna move the fridge over here so that we can kind of cordon this off. Okay, keep the dust in.
Okay. How's it going here? This is just like—
this is stuff that we put it out in the loft, but we don't need out right now.
Okay, because we just— all right, temp desk down here in the hallway. About to— gonna start editing. Let me show you guys. Okay, so we put the other computer in here for the kids' schoolwork, and Mom's just gonna— as little as she uses it for, she'll just get on the laptop. Going through the tool cabinet. It's got to get crazy before it gets better.
Yeah, crazy! It's so deep here. It's so deep? How deep? Can you stand up?
Whoa! Where are they, Gideon?
They're under the bridge.
They're under the bridge.
I see them.
Oh man, little stinkers. I'm ready for you.
Go!
Whoa, that's so big. This is round 3 and Jonah is determined to win.
Free the birds!
I think it's time for some broth. Been working on that a little bit. Let's see what they've gotten into. But it seems to be going good out here. How is it going out here, Grandma?
Oh, it looks great.
Okay, I'm just moving everything that I can.
Where's your giveaway pile?
Um, I don't know, it's kind of mixed in.
Okay.
I think that it may be when I'm putting things back, just because— okay, I can kind of see like what I have room for now, because I want to, um, I told Randolph I wanted him to kind of custom design me some things down here so that I can utilize the space better.
Oh, it needs salt. Where's our salt? I don't know where anything is. I know that's going to be our life for 10 days. Okay, it's around the table. Well, you take care of yourself, I'll take care of myself.
Okay.
Drawers are gone.
It's all empty.
Wow.
Empty.
Wow.
I just have to finish this.
Seriously, good job.
We're rocking and rolling to be done.
You're gonna be able to get it done today? Oh yeah, it looks like it. The kids got rained out at the lake. Next best option, Legos. Everybody's gonna clean up when they're done, right? Yeah, I get back to editing. I have to dry you off, which involves having your ration. All right, I am done with that edit. What do you got out here?
You want to find a box?
That looks like a job for me.
Well, like, this is in its own box.
I'm putting everything that, like, all that I pull out of there in the guest room.
Yeah, okay, because that's where I'm gonna— that's where, like, if it's not over here, then it's in the guest room. Like, I don't want to be like, oh, it could be in the loft, oh, it could be in the guest room, oh, it could be over here. I just want it all in one spot.
What about all this?
Not out here, and it's going out there.
What, what about all the stuff on the counter?
Um, well, some of Peter's bus is leaving and I'm gonna go through that produce and we're gonna take some to the hollers and—
Oh yeah.
Um, and after that all the stuff will be out of here.
Yeah.
That box needs to go.
Okay.
That stuff that like, that's got like my cream separator in it. Like, I don't need it out here.
And that's it too. The hollers tomorrow. We're going to help the hollers tomorrow.
Yes. We're going to rip siding off of the trailer and we're going to do whatever they tell us to do.
Okay, cleared out. It's looking good.
I need to paint. I primed the spot on the thing.
Okay.
And I need to paint it and then let it dry, and then I need to poly it, and then that's going to tell me if this is going to work.
Okay, good.
I still don't even know if it's going to work.
Okay, Rebecca's checking my edit. Oh my, and I've got to get this cleared out. For Monday too, because Jason's coming. We're gonna start working on the cool room. Shall I do a before shot here too? Before, it's just a bunch of junk out in our loft. Our house is right there. Yes, we live in a barn. Y'all know that we live in a barn. We've turned a loft into our apartment. So here, I just need— I need to get stuff because he needs a working station here. And then the CoolBot is going in the corner. These windows will get out. They're going to the Hollers, a gift. We were going to put them here, it's just never happened. It's not going to happen for a while. Let's just give it to them, they can use them right away. All right, this is not necessarily typical. No, not typical at all. I haven't edited at night in a very long time. 10:20, editing tonight. Editing 2 vlogs today so I don't have to edit tomorrow when we go to the Hollers. But are you guys ready to see this reveal? Just today's work, pretty much phase 1 of the kitchen renovation. Oh my, good job! Feels good to have done so much in one day, huh?
It does. Yeah, and it's like so clean here. I'm like, I don't—
I don't want to put anything back in I think that was a good idea that you're gonna get rid of stuff as you put it in. Yeah. Cuz like, who wants to clutter this up? This feels so good.
It does.
Do we really need anything? Cuz this is great.
We don't, we don't need anything.
Let's just get rid of our clutter. We have our eggs. Our eggs survived. And somehow that star in the window.
I'm gonna take that down.
Okay, good.
I'm gonna wash that window. Alright. Okay, so we moved the fridge over there just for purpose of the renovation so that we could access it and not get in any of the way. And, and there's still the potential that I'm gonna hang some plastic up here just to kind of encapsulate this. I don't know how dusty this is going to be this coming up, and I want to try to not have a lot of dust in the house. I mean, we're gonna have dust, but try to make it less. So we moved the fridge over here, and I'm like I really like this. I could have like an extra 3.5 feet of counter space. Like, I don't know, I'm just like speechless. So I took a picture, I called my mom, I said, Mom, check your messages, I want to talk to you about this. So I think we're, we're gonna rework this, but Justin's gonna have to lose his desk. Yeah, in this area, but I think we have another spot in the, in the living space because we like for him to be in there.
We like to blend work, life, well, family.
It's just nice to have him because even though he's working, he's still part of it and the kids can— the kids feel like they can come and climb and stuff.
So I can get up and so until now you weren't buying any space.
No, I was—
and now you have a potential of 3 and a half feet. You already measured it?
Yes.
And what will you do with this?
We had, we had this here, so I really like this being open, and so I think what I'm gonna do is maybe put the trash can here.
Yeah.
But maybe not, because then I was thinking I could hang my cast iron pans here. Oh, um, I don't know. I don't know if it'll come out and they'll hang. Or if I'll hang them flat on the wall or what, but I'm— I've just got some ideas flowing. So there's that, but the trash can still may end up here. And obviously we're gonna paint this wall. Um, and I don't know if tile will go here or if we'll paint it, if maybe we'll do some wood on it like our other walls to kind of bring that in. Or what, but I've got ideas flowing for that.
That was here. Now what are you thinking here?
So now I'm thinking I might just leave this here. I'll paint it and, um, just leave it here to be some storage, maybe a bookshelf. I might cut it in half because this is just too put together.
Yeah, what about making countertop on top of it?
I would maybe put a butcher block on top of that. We may lift it up.
Yeah, you can put a board on this and then the butcher block.
Yeah, the only thing is, is that if we're gonna do that, I have to order a 10-foot piece. I don't think— they don't carry them in the store. They only carry 8-foot pieces. Okay, so, well, it just depends on how long it'll take to get here because I want this to get done fast. I feel like, though, all the things that I'm just 10-foot piece.
We'll have an 8-foot piece for something else, something on farm.
Well, no, that's not the problem. The problem is getting it here.
So, oh, they don't have it in store?
No.
Oh, not even the 10-foot?
Oh, they don't have 8-foot in store.
Well, what's wrong with getting 8-foot?
Well, we have the 8-foot. This is, this is 8-foot. Yeah, then they sell them in 4-foot pieces too.
Why don't you buy a 4-foot piece? And cut it. Can you not cut it?
Yeah, yeah, you can cut it.
Okay.
But if you wanted it to be a long continuous thing.
Oh, I get it now. I was thinking this might be mower or something.
Oh, that might not be a bad idea, putting some wheels on it. We had had that thought, maybe putting some wheels on it. Wheels on something, putting a cart here, but if we're gonna do that, I think I would just buy a cart.
That's true. So you We could forget this thing and buy a cart and put it there.
Yeah, there's lots of ideas flowing. All right, but this will be all reworked to make the fridge work with it. Okay, because I am stuck on this. I've got to— we're gonna talk to Randolph Monday morning, 8:30. Okay, say, hey, can you build me some cabinets too?
Okay, so what we thought was going to take a week might take two. Okay, good. Now I was gonna say 10 days, but yeah, 2.
Well, I'm thinking though that it might not take that long.
Okay. No, it always takes longer than you think. Could be 3 weeks. All right. Okay.
Well, the thing is, is that we can still use this kitchen when the countertops are in, like—
Yeah.
Come in and just like—
The sink's never going, so that's gonna be definitely But you are getting a new sink, so we are going to be out temp. Temp. Man, this is exciting. Okay, and so here, here's our temporary kitchen.
Do you want to see the color of the cabinets?
Are you talking to me or the fans?
Whoever, whoever wants to see them. I'm talking whoever is interested. So this—
I've seen this 87 and a half times.
He has, he's seen it a lot. So these are not— this is this color but without primer. So I've got primer underneath this, and I think I like it better. Makes it a little bit more uniform. And then I need to— I need to put poly on it.
Okay.
And then that's the color of our cabinets. So that will be uppers and lowers are going to be all this color. I'm pretty excited with white backsplash and butcher block and some— a little bit of white quartz countertop.
Okay. So how about an after shot of the loft? Boom!
Before.
After. That's our computer desk wall. This is the computer desk wall now. The old kitchen. The old kitchen now. This is before setting up the kitchen in the dining room. This is after setting up the kitchen in the dining room. You're out here without your shoes on and the daily game begins. Where is Mr. Brown's shoes? I don't know why I always look here where they're supposed to be. You got snow boots over here. You want to wear those? There they are. You got peanut butter on your cheek. You've been having a good snack.
