Chapters
Harun said these didn't need watered yesterday. We've had a couple shady days. You know, that's also good. That means Rebecca's been keeping up with the watering. Jonah, did you get our Henry— get our Henry cart, uh, hose, and a string trimmer? Awesome. And meet over at the big crop garden. Look at these two. Boy, they're hungry. They're hungry and thirsty. We got to keep up with them, guys. Lily, did you guys feed them water in the afternoon yesterday? Yeah, we got to do that. Okay. That means it's time for this, for the sea monsters. Yeah, I went ahead and turned their light off. Gideon, let's get their feeders out and put a little bedding down. What happened here, Lily? Two more fat chicks dead?
No, those chickies were dead.
I can tell. Just grab some and sprinkle it. We're keeping on this nicely. I don't smell a smell. You guys did good keeping it sanitary yesterday. Good job, Lily. You just hanging out with the chicks? Yeah. Why do you think they're all huddled over there?
Because they drank their water, ate their dinner, and coconut.
And a little bit of a lot warm. Jonah, can you get in there and raise these brooders up? These guys are almost 2 weeks old. They grow so fast. What do you think about putting them out this weekend? Get them out of the brooder and out on grass as soon as possible. We'll see what the weather's going to be like, and we just might keep going, keep going. Probably, probably max height because they're getting so big. So if we're gonna put them out this weekend, it's Wednesday, that's Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and then Sunday. So we need to wean them off of this. Yeah, so tomorrow let's turn the brooder off during the day. Are they getting out?
They're trying. This is my favorite chicken.
Why is that your favorite? Because— oh my word, we put food in there, they're just going nuts for it! Do you think we need 2 trays in there?
Yes, I put 2 trays.
All right, I was kind of thinking we didn't, but maybe we can find this feeder. Yeah, put them Okay, there's the lid to it. Gross, tiny mouse turds. Okay, you wash it. Okay, let's get some water in it and then you scrub it down. Getting— you're doing so good lately. He's getting with it. Jonah's got Henry string trimmer. You know, we helped those people yesterday, we cleaned up their farm, kind of motivated me. We've kind of got an untidy spot on our farm. Let's get caught up and get it in order. Okay, Elka, can you hold it up higher? Can you hold it maybe in the middle? Oh boy, we're running out of our feed. Hopefully that order will come very soon. But Gideon, where should we put this one, this feeder?
Uh, in here.
Why don't we move the brooder over and then we'll put it in that corner? Okay, can you handle that or do you need me to?
I got it.
Okay, just put it right there. There you go, that's good, that's good. Now Lily can hand you that feeder right there behind you. Good deal. These pigs are ferocious. We got the water in there. Uh-oh, Jonah, look, they're having to reach over. We need to bury that a little bit, so I'll pull this off, bury that, uh, platform a little bit. Gideon, you did such a good job with it. All right, ready? There, look at them going nuts for it. I know one thing we can do to start, uh, hardening them off Let's leave this top door open, okay? Just shut the bottom one. You guys, come on, we're gonna go garden. Last night we put our— all our tools back like a good farmer. I put this way high where kids can't reach it. There's nothing like this. This is my favorite. We've let the weeds get ahead of us here in the potatoes. Can you see the— can you see the potatoes?
Yes, yes, get in.
That's a potato, don't hit it.
Is that a potato?
That's not a potato, that's a lamb's quarter. Good job.
Is this one? Is that Lily?
Are you being careful?
Yeah.
I wonder if you guys should go through the aisles. Oh yeah, let me get close to the plants, you guys get the— in the paths or right in between, like right down through here. Look at this garlic jamming!
Woo!
Not many weeds to speak of in there. Oh yeah, we need to get over in here. Need to string trim around this. Johnny got the perfect hoe for hoeing in the onions. We need to harvest this old garden. I hate I went and let it go to seed. Now there'll be more seeds here in our garden now, but we need to get this out of here and cover it with the silage tarp. We only have 30 minutes till milking. This might be ambitious, but you never know until you try. There's something nice about coming out in the morning. It's nice and cool hoeing. It's kind of like a haircut. It's kind of like a nice haircut. The garden just got a haircut. Bring Henry over here, guys. It's kind of confusing. We named a cart Henry. That was before we knew we'd have a son named Henry. Right here. Yeah, Jonah, you can pull these ribs up from our winter garden. We just saw some lettuce in there, but let's harvest all anything that's good— the lettuce, the any— anything green for the pigs in the and the chickens.
I don't got Mama a birthday present.
Do you? Do you get in?
He does. We got him one. What? Yesterday we went to, to, um, Dollar General.
Who took you? Irene? Was that your idea, Irene?
Grandma took us. And then Zariah got a birthday card for Grandma, but don't— for Mama, but don't tell Mama.
Okay, I won't tell her. Her birthday's tomorrow. Let's feed these to the animals. We saved the kale for the sheep. Oh my word, wait until you see the kale on the sheep. Let's get a good bit for the three little pigs. They love it. Hey buddy, you gonna pull that cart? Get in. Nice. How have you guys been? It feels like I've been gone forever. You guys getting it worked up? I don't know, we're feeding you too many scraps, aren't we? You're well fed. So then I just give you more, huh? There's nothing more fun than just throwing some pigs some food. Actually, there is. It's throwing some sheep some food that they like. In a minute.
Um, can I throw some of it up here?
Sure. Here you go, get in. Look at our growing corn there. A little bit of mushrooms growing up too. Looky here, Farmer Henry, you just staring away with your little feet. He just stares. He's along for the ride, isn't he?
Yes.
You watering your plants? Yeah. Where's your speed?
Oh, I, I'm doing this to kind of soak them. Okay, it kind of— it gets— it's a little bit More of a soap.
Okay, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep. Here you go, guys. Oh, you guys want the flowers? How you doing, buddy? I think the kids have named him Buddy. How you doing, buddy? Did a cow poop on you? Looks like Polly pooped on you. Interesting news, guys. Bandy— I've always kind of worried about Bandy because she never really shed. That's not a sign of really good health. See how everybody else is kind of shedding? You shed real nice. You shed real nice, Belle. Bandy's baby wasn't that strong when it was born, and it ended up not making it. It actually died the other day.
His name's Buddy. Yeah, when he's big, he can— we can— we can call him Big Buddy.
This is probably Bandy's replacement right right here. I think it's the only female we got, isn't it? She's so gentle too. And that one's Dixie's baby who threw us twins, uh, just did a great job. Look at that. So we do have a dilemma because we have 5 mamas. 3 mamas did great. One of our sheep mentors, Claire, you know, reminded us, look, Bandy, I mean, you might have struggled, but you are, you are more gentle. You haven't had any other problems. So there is the idea to actually keep her but never sell like our livestock, so the, the line doesn't continue there. But kind of see how she does on her second round. And so it looks like we may be keeping her just, just for the— for meat babies. That one just may be going with our original gut feeling on her. When you have 5 to cull 2 is difficult, but we will breed this one. She did good. Oh, it's good to be home. Gone a day and miss it. It's already appreciated even more. Milking time. Any day, Grandma, we're gonna catch up and we're not gonna have any more jars. I thought it was today. We've got 3. Tomorrow we may be out. We're waiting on a cream separating part. Unfortunately, the company's in the Czech Republic. I do kind of wonder if this This is it. I don't think that's it. Or is this it? No, that's some piece of clothes. It definitely didn't come Prime or we would already have it like 2 weeks ago. The beautiful one. Up to something beautiful.
Oh boy.
Oh boy. I'm gonna have to spot you, I have a feeling. She's gotta make her own birthday cake. That's sad. I try to tell her, just go to the World's Best Carrot Cake, get you a gluten-free cake.
It's, uh, I want to be able to eat my cake and not feel—
You're particular.
I'm very particular.
Uh, well, with ingredients, but also taste, because the Burn It Up Cooking Show can— I can read and follow the instructions, but she don't want to give her cake over at the Burn It Up Cooking Show. Look at that face.
No way.
Are you gonna let Mom make her cake? He just woke up right when she started. Mom's got it all cleaned up. Cake is in the oven. It's going off now. Oh, it's a chocolate cake, huh? How am I supposed to tell if it's done? I mean, I hope it wasn't a vanilla because it is brown. Is it?
This is not vanilla.
What kind of cake you making?
Um, a chocolate with buttercream. It's the famous one that Lorraine Oh, you're making the rain cake.
Mom asked me to hold the baby. I will gladly hold the baby. Are you waking up? Are you gonna wake up a little bit? I need a mom to clear out. We got a special lunch coming. I need the oven. We got an Italian ziti with our Italian sausage and zucchini. The crew for our TV show Rooted is coming today for interviews. Big day yesterday helping the McLambs. Big day today of interviews, tying in that story. What's that for? Oh, that's to try, uh, let it cool off. The crew is currently interviewing Ben and Meg. You guys, if you're fans of Ben and Meg, you're going to be getting a lot of them. And then tonight, uh, interviewing Jason from So the Land and Lorraine. Oh, Lorraine too! Lorraine will be having an appearance. Next up in the kitchen, cooking with Arun Kumar. Indian Wednesday. Have you noticed, Rebecca, the crew, Rooted Crew, tends to book the shoots for Tuesday, Wednesday? I was like, wait a minute, Ben, Taco Tuesday and Indian Wednesday. Becca though said she might make brownies, so I said I might make ice cream, especially since we're gonna need jars. Oh my gosh, look at this! Look at this. This is getting on 2 to 3 weeks of milk. Let's find our oldest ones. We're gonna have to cream separate old school. Okay, 4/21, 4/27, another 4/21. How'd that happen? Some 4/23s. Oh, 4/18. Let's get those. Be very careful not to disturb the jars too much. Okay, I think We'll get 2 cups from this. With the crew here though, we probably need 4 cups. 2 batches. That'll probably do it though. Probably a cup in each one of those. They said that we never cease to amaze them with the good quality food, so that's good. Good homegrown food. Anybody appreciates that, I think. So now I'm just doing this old school, just scooping the cream off the top. Skimming the cream off the top. And it's ice cream, not butter, so it won't matter if I get a little bit of the skim in there. As if cake wasn't enough, she's got to go and make brownies for tonight.
Brownie cookies.
Brownie cookies. Our future is looking bright and full of ice cream. Bye-bye, Mr. Henry. Bye-bye, Mr. Henry. I am up. It's my turn for an interview. What a beautiful day. If you'll notice in the previous Rooteds In my interviews, there's like this breath, this epic vapor. Well, that's because it was cold. That's not gonna happen today. We might have a bumblebee flying in my front of my face. Y'all ready? How cool.
Hey, Giddy, when we start, I need you to interrupt us.
Ah, he's being a good boy. You're just gonna watch? He went over to Amy and Arin's today with a bag of dirt in his hands. There you go. Ready to go? I'm ready. Ready to go. All right. It's got a nice reflector on it. This is my view. What's this?
This is a boom mic.
You guys were using that yesterday. Did it make a big difference?
Yeah, so we used this because there was a lot of people walking around that wasn't mic'd, so Luke was able to hold this around and capture audio for multiple people. So this is a blimp, so it— the shotgun mic is inside of here, and this just helps the wind. Uh, yes, not penetrating through.
How much better is that than this, which is kind of like what I got on my camera?
So that shotgun mic and the one inside is the same, but this blimp is a lot better than the little foam screen because it encapsulates it all, so it keeps everything around the mic nice.
Okay, protected. Boom, that is over. They're gonna set up for Rebecca's. It's really neat where he's taking this story, you know, you saw in our vlog us helping Nick and Christina, and that's just the obvious. Let's flip a homestead, let's give them a boot and raise them some money. But this Rooted is going deeper. It's going about community, it's going about the strength it takes for Nick just to humble himself enough for us to go in there and help. That's huge. That takes a lot of strength, and he has inspired me, that's for sure.
