Big Move (for sheep + calves) & Planting the fall garden

This content was created by Victor Justin Rhodes. This content was uploaded by Victor Justin Rhodes. This is a YouTube vlog titled "Big Move (for sheep + calves) & Planting the fall garden" (created 2024-08-02). The recording is a casual family/farm vlog featuring a primary host (labelled SPEAKER A) and multiple family members/cousins (Lily, Rebecca, Jonah, Josiah, Henry, Gabby, Annie and others). It documents hands-on farm work: moving sheep and calves (Harriet, Ike, Posse), troubleshooting tractor/trailer and fencing issues, milking chores, planning sheep breeding (mentions apple cider vinegar timing), building/using small farm fixtures (sheep shaw, milk sled, a “mobile luchador ring”), and planting the fall garden (broccoli, cabbage, collards, onions). The tone is conversational, instructional, and family-oriented.

Happy Casual Friday! Don't you love how these vlogs are getting themes? Casual Friday, Shabbat Shalom coming tomorrow, extra video on Saturdays. We're doing it 7 days a week posting. What you doing? He's telling me, he's telling me I'm gonna get distracted. Okay, where are we heading? Did you get all the milk supplies? Did you get, did you get all the milk supplies from inside? All right, look at this guy getting tall. Big day today, cousins leave. We're gonna get it all in, aren't we? Are we gonna work together today so we can enjoy each other on this last day? Well, let's get it all done and then y'all can play. Tours, move Harriet, and plant the fall garden. Sound good? All right, let's do it. You got everything?
Yeah.
Oh, I forgot, we got to clean the house too. We leave it. Jonah, grab Henry, grab Gideon. Can you move the turkeys?
Yeah.
Okay, so humid this morning. I'm having a hard time keeping you guys unquiet. Clear. Wait, the calf's over. Ow. Looks like maybe the fence— it's on, I hear it clicking. Looks like maybe it wasn't taunt right up there. Calf got over. That means we don't have any milk today. Does mean chores are going to be a little easier, so it's good and bad. I'm disappointed. Two reasons: we're missing out on about 3 gallons of milk, and two, I really wanted a milk with you guys. What time did you put him back in the pasture yesterday? You forgot to hook the fence back up. Wow. Hey, good job protecting the trees. It's paying off. Look at that fruit tree. You gotta put it in four-wheel drive. We might have to push. Okay. Hey everybody, we need everybody to push. Salma is not as heavy as Sally, so therefore a little harder to pull it, but we did it. It just needed a little a little bit. Oh, there you go. Okay, you keep the sheep. You keep— hey, you're good, Kate or Grace. Keep the sheep from going up. It's hard to get cows and not sheep because sheep are more easily heritable. I wouldn't say they're easily— more easily heritable. Cows are definitely more easily heritable because they're chill. Sheep get— oh, that was just kind of So much easier. So much easier cows than sheep, and most definitely than goats. Don't let those devil has put you in a trance. If we had just cows, we'd be— we'd only have one strand of electric fence out here, guys. And sometimes instead of going around, they get so frantic. Here we go, there we go. Actually, actually, y'all, sheep shaw and meat shaw, same thing except for this. You just add a mineral feeder to the meat shaw. Two 2x4s going across, mount mineral feeders. You get it, Tractor Supply, board and frame around it to keep them from destroying, and it becomes a sheep You could use a sheep shawl for a meat shawl. Lily, why don't you and the girls do the water? It's less technical. And Josiah and I'll pick up net. How about we pick them up and you take them to the trucks? We don't have so much of a deadline today as we do how quick can we get done so the cousins can have playtime together. Although we're spending quality time together working. They're kids, they want to play. I want to get them that. We're hustling. That's a load of net. Guys, it's only 10 till 8. We're crushing it. Everything is going really well today. Cross our fingers for this job moving Harriet and Ike and Posse. You think they'll move just fine? Yeah. Hey, good job moving the turkeys. We'd be heading in here. The boys say they're sick of brambles, and I believe them, so we need to kind of get them on grass. This is a little more bramble. This is 2 acres we cleared a couple years ago. It's kind of gnarly getting in here. Us going camping, having a farm sitter— had a brilliant idea, I think, and it'll make chores easier. And maybe we can let this grow up a little bit more, give them some grass for a while, and then come hit the brambles again. Yeah, I like it. There's grass up in there, not enough to make it worth all the trouble to get them over in here. That can keep growing. There's this crazy ravine in here, but Jonah's going to do some grading this fall, and hopefully we're going to make this 2 acres a little more accessible. Josiah, I do think I like your idea, but we are going to have to do the trailer in order to get those sheep. Who we're doing? We've got to do Harriet and Ike. Let's go examine it and make sure it's in— and it's in good order. We're gonna need a couple of wheels. I think we have a couple of extra wheels somewhere, Josiah. We're disheveled during our— oh look, there's one, there's two. Hot dog, man, it's going good for us today. It shouldn't mean me more than two, should we? The crescent wrenches are right where they're supposed to be, although Josiah tells me they took wheels off of it. Probably just those wheels, so hopefully there's not any other wheel damage, which is unlikely. I don't think Josiah realizes. I think he thinks this is the easy way out today. I'm not sure if it is. I think it's more to do what we're doing, but I think it's the right thing to do. Got a lot of people in this house or what? I might see if it seems peaceful in there, go start working on this wrestling ring. Look at this, Lily, what a good breakfast. Eggs, cabbage, peaches, and a cookie.
Yum.
How about that? Mom's taking care of Henry. You gonna release your mom? Hopefully by planting in about an hour, hopefully. How long do you think it'll take to move Harriet? 45 minutes, everything goes smooth, huh?
Why don't we split up?
Found a way to get him out so Mama can do your crops. Your Crocs. While we're doing the sheep, Mom may be able to plant Josiah. That'll come in clutch if this takes a while.
All right, good morning. I'm in the garden already. I've got my broccoli and cabbage plants. Cousins are in the background. We're gonna plant broccoli in this row, these two rows. Right there. Then in this row over here, I'm gonna plant cabbage.
Henry's in no hurry. Other foot. There you go. Josiah, you take Gabby and you put together the wrestling ring. Lily, you bring the twins and come help me hook up the trailer to the tractor. 50/50 chance, lucky start. We really need her— him, whatever tractors are— to get these animals off the mountain. What do you think, Henry? He's gonna start? All right, good. Like your optimism. Hang tight, we're just gonna make sure he starts. Well, we've had our problems this morning. This was barely in there. Hey, how's the, uh, wheels? Do we have enough? Yeah. Are we missing any? No, none. They're all full, not flat. We've slowly replaced those wheels with non-flat wheels. All right, we got that jammed in there as best we can. It's too big. To fit in there. I feel like it wasn't the connection though. I feel like battery's dead, and it could be because there's not an alternator on this thing. We're gonna move this over, and then on our way back, grab the truck. Boom! Okay, that was painless. This mobile luchador ring also coming to Book 2 Homestead Builds, along with the sheep shawl and the milk sled. That'll be Volume 2, guys. We're working on that. Volume 1's come out We're going on to volume 2. All in one. It's, it's a fence, it's minerals, it's shade. We hang a bucket on it. It's an all-in-one, and you can rest at night knowing they ain't getting out of that. We're gonna put our ram in there because we like to time our lamb baby births for January, harvest those guys in November. Rebecca, Rebecca, boy, time flies. It's time to actually put the ram in. Ike's gonna have a really good day today, so that's easier. Hey, we might complicate things, Josiah. It's time to actually put the ram in for breeding. Let's do that then. But where are we gonna put Harriet?
In that ramp, in that thing.
We'll put him in there with that sheep. So we're gonna put Harriet and the wether together. We can keep Harriet separated because we don't want to get her pregnant yet. She can breed now, but she's way too young, and we can't just put her behind the bulls with the sheep because what we have happened today, they're gonna get together. And hopefully she'll bond with that little wether. Sheep need buddies. Cows need buddies.
Just in 2 weeks we can introduce him. I mean, he can just be in the, the ramp pen for that long with Harriet.
Okay, the idea is apple cider vinegar in their water flushes their eggs down better, supposedly. So we might put him in there 2 weeks later.
Yeah, I think that's fine. I feel like Um, it is worth the experiment because I read it somewhere. I cannot remember where I read it. I cannot find it again, but it did stick in my head. Apple cider vinegar 2 weeks before introducing the ram will flush more eggs into their uterus to give us more lamb babies.
Cross your fingers. There's no alternator, so don't turn this off. One day we'll have electricity in this vast shed, but hey, we improve things one day at a time. It's like 9:30. I was thinking 10:30 would have been a real good stop for them to play. They leave at 2. That's sort of an impossible goal. I like it. To get these animals down here and plant all those crops.
She's ready to go.
She's getting too skinny. You don't like this bramble, huh? You're too skinny. I think y'all coming on, just come slow. Uh, you decide when you get a chance, you'll come in the middle. Our time. Lily, can you go pull the plug on the tractor? Good, good, good. Just as soon as they get in there, you're gonna— Lily, you're gonna sling that door to us as soon as they— I didn't expect it to be the cows giving us the problem. Oh boy, we can't shut it. Okay, can't shut the door because of the bank. Ah, you're kidding me. Okay, all right, now, now we can take our time. We're trying to get the truck up This big rock is in the way. At least the animals are in the trailer. Yeah boy, I think we can back up because of that well now. This is the well, so now— okay, just keep going straight back. What you got over on that side? Yep, just go straight back, you won't hit it. Okay, now turn it. All right, this is when problems compound. We can't shut the trailer, then tractor won't— they won't go in because of the tractor. Turn the tractor off, trailer won't shut. All right, hold on, we're gonna open this. We're gonna open this all the way. Move that. Open that up all the way.
Actually, what did I tell you?
Okay, just let them all go in and then we'll get them out who we need. Let her go in, it's gonna be easier to get her out. Oh, thanks for getting that water, Annie. Yeah, they're happy in that bramble, aren't they? They're happy to get some minerals, right? Let's put a salt rock in here too. Do we have one, Annie? Let's get them out.
It's off, don't worry.
How do you know? Oh, okay. All right, watch these guys.
Whoa!
All right, we got it on a trickle charge. Thank God for Rebecca getting down here and starting on this. They've planted the entire broccoli and collards row. Bad news and good news. The bad news is it's Getting on in time. It's 11 o'clock. The good news is y'all's flight got delayed, so you get to play.
I mean, it's good and bad.
You'll have all afternoon. You guys ready to plant some onions and then be done?
Yeah.
One of my favorite tools, a smart for these onions.
That's why it's always important.
And we're filling up— we're breaking out the fire hoses. That way it'll cover the entire way, where a sandbag will only cover where the sandbag's sitting. Is that the idea?
Yep.
Oh gosh, 79 on Tuesday. Oh my gosh, but then it's— and then it drops.
Well, I'm glad it's hard at first. It's difficult while we still have energy. So what are you guys gonna play this afternoon?
I'm gonna play now.
Okay.
Win.
Alright. Henry, what are you gonna play this afternoon? Gabby, what are you gonna play this afternoon? I don't know. Nap sounds fun. You worked hard. You and Josiah, man. Jonah, the house looks great. Jonah, you cleaned the house. It looks so good. Good job, bud. That's a happy day.
