Birth + Death of a Pig (in one day) RECORD

In this 36‑minute vlog, Victor Justin Rhodes documents an extraordinary homestead day in which a pig gives birth and is slaughtered on the same day – a record for his farm. The video interweaves several parallel activities: Victor is on his sixth day of a water‑only fast for health healing, losing 11 lb; volunteers from the Abundance Plus community help rebuild garden beds, harvest potatoes, and compost using sheep‑cleared fields; and Luke demonstrates a mobile walk‑in cooler/butcher trailer (Doherty’s Butcher Trailer) that enables field‑side scalding, skinning, and cooling of the pig carcass. Throughout, Victor promotes the uncensored, ad‑free extended version on the Abundance Plus platform, shares personal health observations (weight loss, mood, psoriasis), and emphasizes the sustainable loop of feeding pigs garden waste and compost. The vlog blends instructional content (garden bed reconstruction, compost temperature monitoring, trailer operation) with personal narrative and community engagement, aiming to educate viewers on self‑sufficient farming, animal processing, and fasting for wellness.
Chapters
It's a first for us. We had both a pig birth— first time catching it on film. I got it, y'all. Baby coming out. Killing a pig same day. But before that, some of the Abundance Plus family came and helped us get our garden flipped. And on top of that, I'm going into my 6th day no food. I'm fasting for healing. Real quick, I should let you know there's an uncensored You get to see the shot, you get to see the cut, you get to see the, the pig birth. These are things we can't show on YouTube. Plus you get to see the extended version. This vlog is actually 36 minutes long, so much more of everything. You can see that ad-free on our platform, Abundance Plus. Join the family. See you guys there, abundanceplus.com. 179.2. I have passed my PR. The longest I've gone is 5 days. I'm at now 5 and a half days, 5 plus 12 hours. Feeling pretty good, but generally I feel good in the morning. Won't lie to you, I woke up this morning scared. Feeling of fear. Oh my God, is this safe? Nobody does this. I'm not even— It's like my body is in a, or my mind is in a panic experience. What I might think a minor panic attack would feel like. Forgot the butter out last night, so now we'll just have cultured butter. Which is even better for everybody. Happy day!
One people sent him to Heather directly, so I'm just gonna put these in the house.
What did you cover?
Uh, nothing, just that you're on your fast. Be nice.
Okay. And, uh, do I look any different?
I told him you lost 10 pounds.
11 pounds in 5 and a half days. Let's look at the cow operation before The boys are done. They just finished milking one and moved her over. Every day they get a new paddock. Milking in the road. Don't worry, it's a dead-end road. But where's the school bus now to get a real education? Big family reunion today. Abundance Plus members, we got a lot of work for them today. We've got— we're gonna uncover this, harvest the potatoes. We're gonna get compost over here and rebuild the beds, rebuild the beds. So y'all get to learn how to harvest potatoes, you'll get to learn how to— how we, how we rebuild beds with compost and then reshape them, and then how we cover them for the winter. We'll get some weeds up, we'll feed the pigs from weeds. We're gonna get a bunch of dead tomatoes out. It'll be a challenge to keep everybody busy, so I'll do my best. All right, okay, everybody go grab Grab sandbags. Let's, uh, let's pile our sandbags right here. That's a good job for everybody. We need to get this tarp out of the way so that we can harvest the potatoes. Hopefully we're gonna get compost back on this bed shape, and then we're gonna put the tarp back on. Hopefully we have enough time to do that. A couple people at the end, bring that end. Let's just fold it this way. Why don't we fold it, run it this way, and we can get that water running off. See, we can do this and get get the water going. That's the downhill. This worked out fantastic.
Hi!
We ran the sheep through here to get all the weeds gone. We then— what was left, we covered with the tarp for about 2 weeks. And look, we've got the sheep manure has dissipated. The— we can see the ground. All the weeds have died off. We'll be able to harvest these potatoes very nicely. Oh, you're gonna roll it? Okay, that's good. And then we can easily unroll it. Kids have gotten potatoes through here, I think, but we're just gonna make sure. Okay, you just go about every foot. Yeah. Okay, who wants to take over? I haven't eaten in 5 and a half days. This has been largely harvested, but we're just gonna make sure because the kids were doing it. But once you get about halfway down there, they're gonna— you're gonna start getting a lot of potatoes. This will get funner in a second, I promise. This isn't just busy work. Does anybody want a fork? I found one.
I'll take it.
Thank you. Are we finding potatoes yet? Yes, we are. Heck yeah, we got some. Hey, let's move those. Let's move that a little closer. Closer?
Yeah.
Look at this group. The challenge today is going to be keeping everybody busy. This is an amazing group. Why y'all coming on a Sunday morning just to help Uncle Justin?
Because you have provided years and hours, hundreds and thousands of hours of education for us. It is the least we could do.
Okay, okay. They found a bone.
This might be a—
you found the complainer.
I didn't find it.
I'm looking away.
Whoops. Does anybody here want to admit that they do not like tomatoes?
I love tomatoes.
I hate tomatoes.
I love tomatoes.
Okay, anybody else want to admit they don't like tomatoes? You're safe, beautiful one's not around, you can admit it. Everybody likes tomatoes except for her.
She hates—
okay, does anybody here like pork better than tomatoes? We actually don't eat pork. Okay, you guys might make a good team. You've had enough potato experience. Let's have you get all the dead tomatoes in there and we'll feed them to the pigs. You got something to put them in? Yep, that yellow bin right there. Nature's greatest miracle, turning produce into pork. In this case, even you tomato lovers won't mind too much because these are the dead ones. Every day is bring your kid to work day.
I got to join today. All right, and I can't do anything because I'm holding a baby.
Darn. No, that's the— that's the job, Ashley. That's the job.
That's the job.
Just the ones on the ground, the ones that are very obviously rotten. The beautiful one will kill you if you harvest one of her good tomatoes. Can we get one volunteer? Are y'all all busy? We need one volunteer opening the chicken gate for Josiah to get the compost. You're gonna do it?
Yeah, I'm walking over here.
What's your name again?
Jennifer.
Jennifer. All right, Jennifer, we're gonna get you opening the gate just so I can come in with the machine. And start hauling compost. The name of the game is to keep everybody busy. It's hard. I want to get in and do. I've been 5 and a half days without eating. I'm on a fast. If I exert myself too much— I want to stay busy, I want to stay moving— but if I exert myself too much, my body's gonna— it needs energy— it's going to be eating my muscle. Free compost. Our cows and our sheep were on deep bedding in the winter. Pooping on it and adding more and more every day. That mixes with that— the wood deep bedding was wood chips— that mixes with that. Eventually we pile it up, the chickens help turn it, and that eventually turns into this beautiful compost. Could have broken down a little bit more, but it'll still break down here over the winter. How do I know? It's still a little warm. It's warmer than ambient temperature. That means it's still breaking down. We've gotten it— this pile up to 140, 160 degrees. It's killed Anything that was in that temperature range is going to kill any weed seeds or anything like that.
She is so close to giving birth. Yeah, so we gave her a big stack of hay.
Good.
So she can— I mean, some of it was wet. Do you think that was all right?
Yeah, if we get him some potato sacks, we can free up the carts. All right, I like these littler potato sacks because if set goes bad, it doesn't ruin the whole bit. Just 3— these 3 compost piles, just these 3 need to cover this whole garden. It's amazing how your, your mind can usually do a pretty good job of figuring that out. Did we ever find the potatoes? Yeah, we found some. Yeah, I think we're going to feel free to chop it up and it'll spread further. Okay, just— we're looking for a little sprinkling over everything. If you guys remove these potatoes, we can use this to get the squash plants up. Hey, will you be in charge of— sure, having everybody put it in the bag now?
Yeah, absolutely.
No need to handle it twice. See how our pig feed's going. Hey, you can grab those weeds you're standing on too. Yeah, we'll probably need 2 people to pick that, that tub up. All right, let's do 2 people. I'll show you where to take it. Yeah, buddy! Tomato-fed pork, here we come! Back— well, you got a pile. Let's pull up these weeds. We'll feed one of the chicken posses with it. How about that? Sounds good. Parker says he does the grunt work at home, the grandma has the vision. That's his mom we talked to earlier. More hands on deck composting. We've got our twine set up. Now we know our, our row is right here. We can reshape these beds. We can pull from the path and throw onto the pile. She might be having babies today, guys. Yes, really. Well, she's not coming over to this feed. Looks like she's having contractions. She's breathing hard. One of your rogues is gonna come check it out though. Chicken will take advantage. Let's grab these bagged potatoes and bag the rest of them. Our root cellar is not cold, so we're gonna have to find the next coolest place. I wonder— I'm getting tired. 10:20. We need to wrap this up. 11:30, an hour. I think we'll get this done. I was hoping to go at that too, but it's just, it's just a lot. So I'm gonna be happy if we get 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 4 or 5 beds done. It's way more than we could have done alone in one morning. We've got to put get all this compost down before we shape. What'd you say, Kelly?
We've already done it.
Okay, where maybe it's thin. Yeah, okay, we gotta get all this compost. That— all these 3 rows go. Yep, finish strong. This is the marathon at the end. Who's skipping church right now? Oh my gosh, who's skipping church down there? About everybody. Hey, well, thank you. I appreciate you for skipping something good to come see me. You want to be on the vlog? You want to be in the vlog? We're not building garden beds, we're out here training children. Here we are building garden beds, aren't we? Yes, we are. And then they don't slow you down, buddy. No, just keep going. If you remember, it's about them.
Absolutely.
She's not slowing you down. Rebecca is flattening these out, shaping them flat with the bow rake. It's looking good. They're getting the big— she's, she's getting the big weeds out. And we're wrapping it. Fun, isn't it? It's always picture-worthy, isn't it? Because Anytime you take a weed or a problem and feed it to your chickens and they eat it, you've turned a problem into solution. Look at that, Rebecca! What do you think? That's probably 2 or 3 days' work for us by ourselves. That's feeling good. That's winter rest right there. Hey, y'all did good. Thank you very much. Hey, thank you for the pic. Yeah, let me see how you did. Let me see how you did. Look at that picture you took. See that? Thank you. Did you do good? Good group, got a lot done. I love them. If you guys want to come to this, join the family, abundanceplus.com. Uh, our last work day is the first Sunday of October. Leftover rice pilaf. I made the butter from this morning, might be, uh, cultured butter. 5 and a half days with no food. I'm beyond my personal record. It's weird. My— I have a little bit of soreness in my back come back. What's up with that? That makes me a little doubtful. The psoriasis seems about the same. How's my mood? How's your what? How's my mood compared to normal?
I think you have a great mood.
What are you talking about? Irritable Justin. Rebecca, am I any worse? What I don't want to do is take any more from the family.
No, you're not being worse.
Most of the time you're good.
Whether you're really good or you're really bad.
No, I'll give it up.
I have grace for you when you're struggling.
Especially in the evening. Because in the morning he's really good and in the evening he's Victor Justin Justin.
Well, that's okay.
You just support him. Oh yeah, yeah, that's my time of the day. Y'all are gonna have a time of the month. I have a time of the day. Women have a monthly cycle and a man has a daily cycle. We all know about the woman's time of the month, right? Well, the boy— the man has that too. Mine's anywhere between 3 and 6. Get the daily picture. I'm 179.2, lost a pound. It's slowing down, thank God. I'm not doing this to lose weight. You see my abs yet? Yeah, you're a ball. Okay, that's good. That means I've got a lot more fat to burn, which means I can go longer in this fast. Also, shoulder check, shoulder check. I like that. I like that.
Still stiff.
I'm gonna be honest, I'm hoping I heal before 40 days comes, and I'll be totally honest with y'all.
I need $100.
What's my name? What's my name?
I'm Anthony. What's Papa's name? You got $100?
Facebook Marketplace, here we come for furniture for the cabin.
No, it's for Lily.
Oh, furniture for Lily. Birthday coming up. Let's just do boom, boom, boom, 3 clips, and we've got the furniture here. Happy day! Hey, hey, how's it going? Good to see you. You too. I knew who you were right away. Not too many of those coming down the street, this lonely street. You can— let me— maybe that foil is in your way. Is it? We're going to show off this contraption. What do you call it?
Well, we call it the homestead model of our Doherty's Butcher trailers.
Oh my gosh, does it have a cold— cool bot on it? It's got a walk-in cooler.
Yes.
Oh man, so you could hang a beef. Yep, yep.
We quarter the beef if we're gonna put a beef in there. Um, it'll hold— I've had two in it before.
Wow, we can do 3. Did you sell these things or sell plans to these things? Heck yes. The trailer enables you— well, you could kill in the field. Yes, you could kill the cow in the field. Yep, where he wants to be, and then haul him to wherever you need to do. Yes, same thing with the pig. You can haul them into the scald or whatever. Absolutely. Yeah, yeah. Okay, we're gonna figure out where you want to do this. We are— you're a fan of skinning, we're going to let you do that.
Okay.
Yeah, we were thinking about keeping the pork rinds, but yeah, either way, we might could just put you right here. Absolutely, that'll work. What do the other cars think when you're driving down the highway?
Well, you know what we need to do is— and it's crazy—
oh yes, this needs to have an ad on it. The sign is right there and you can't read it. No. So we need to— and we're talking about making him a big vinyl something on them, definitely, so that people can see. Yeah. As it We're going down the road. He's got jacks on this thing. He's leveling this thing. It's got leveling. He's got the jack up here, of course, and the jack's here. I just realized we got to get this turkey going so that we can eat and harvest this pig before dark. I'm going to get my gun. I look out the window, the— that pig has had her babies. Oh, here it comes!
Yay!
Hey, it's time to go kill the pigs! I can't— let's go kill the pig! We have never killed a pig this late in the evening. Our guest Luke wants to demonstrate his butchering trailer all in one. I'm really excited about it. Got skin, that's what I was just doing. Yeah, transfer that to a bucket and we'll see, and then you put that back and we won't lose it. So I'm walking through it. Feed them, skim. If you feed a pig food, they'll be like this. It's hard to hit their head. You got to feed them water, a liquid. They hold still to drink. Get in, get 3 pails. Listen, we've had birth and we've had death of a pig in one day. That's a record. What we're looking for here is the, the subordinate. We don't need a new pecking order to have to be established after we kill. Probably the guy in the middle. I can't really tell who the subordinate is. Probably the one on the right. Well, I'm looking for the smallest one usually. Otherwise I would have needed to spend some more time out here. See, if you kill the subordinate, they don't have to re-establish pecking order, right?
It's probably your smallest.
Yeah, that one. We're guessing that's our smallest. I'm doing— giving 3 that hopefully they'll spread out. If this doesn't work, we might Go get the rake. If I put it in right there, they'll be facing the wrong direction. I just put away the gun. That went fantastically. Pig went down right away. They slid it. As always, can't not show that on YouTube. You can catch that on Abundance Plus uncensored. Uh, that's what I'm excited about. They used this crane, and we could have had we not had a machine. We could have gotten this out there with a tractor, a truck, something like that, gotten this out in the field and hauled the pig over here. It looks like you're gonna skin.
Having a skinning cradle is really handy.
It's going to demonstrate skinning. Normally we'll scalding, which is— it takes longer. It's good because it wraps your ham and stuff like that, captures the meat. Plus you can keep the, the hocks, the legs, the trotters for a a broth. That'd be a really gelatinous broth. And for me, primarily, I would want to keep the skin for pork rinds. It's the only place I can get organic pork rinds. But I'm not sure how much longer I'm gonna eat pork. It's been making me nauseous. He eats a lot of grain. I'm personally going to try to move it, especially with this condition. Pork would be high on the suspect list in regards to meats of what, of what could be inflaming me. A lot of people would probably say that pig is messing you up. Yeah. Possible unclean animal. If you go to scald and scrape and something goes wrong, you overscald, yeah, all of a sudden you realize you need to get done in a hurry.
Yep, you're gonna end up skinning either way. So being able to skin the animal is a good first step.
That is— Luke was telling me earlier, he can, he can come home from work, be told he needs to kill a pig, kill it that night, and then part it the next day after work. Or yeah, part it the next day after work. Austin's filming a instructional for us for Abundance Plus. You're gonna film all the way from the kill to the parting. All right, Luke, you did it! How long? 7:30. We killed at 6, a little after 6. Good job. All right, we're gonna go feed these guts to the chickens. That definitely works better with the camera. Do what you want with it.
I'm gonna put it right here by the compost pile. All right, flies are gonna die. Eggs on Chickens are going to harvest a lot of the protein right away. The flies are going to lay eggs, chickens are going to eat the larvae. Eventually this is going to shrink down. Precious little smell because they're on top of it. Pull the compost over it, you're going to compost it, and you haven't lost it, aren't they?
Nice. Yep. Let's see this. This is the game changer right here. Yeah, mobile walk-in cooler.
Yep. We'll use a CoolBot cooling system. We have a piece of Unistrut up here. So we, we just swing the carcass off the hoist onto the Unistrut, pull it in. We never have to pick it up.
Wow, I love it. Now wait, this is doughtybutchertrailers.com. People can buy a trailer, they can, or they can buy plans. That's right. Austin will link that in the description too.
Shortly to come out with one geared for hunters.
Okay, cool. But this could hold beef.
You got a quarter of them, but I've had 2 beef in here.
Yeah, you can. There's a lot of room here. Yeah. Wow. And it's at 40 degrees in here with that CoolBot, right?
And that's because the door is open. It was—
yeah, 33 earlier.
I was like, we gotta go down to 33.
Will it? Yeah. I was like, we got to go get the big tub and we got to get the plastic bags and put this— put them in the ice. And y'all pointed at this. I'm like, oh yeah, duh, touche. You even got a light on it. All right, close it up, cool off so we can cool that off. It's easier to part a pig when it's cool, stiff. That's right, we'll do that in the morning.
Sounds good.
All right, see y'all in the morning. You don't want to miss that. Happy day.
More from Justin

If I had to start my Homestead all over again, it could only pick one animal…
