Boys Raise $15,750 in Pork, then Buy a TRUCK!

This content was created by Victor Justin Rhodes. This content was uploaded by Victor Justin Rhodes. This is a YouTube vlog titled "Boys Raise $15,750 in Pork, then Buy a TRUCK!" (created 2023-03-19). The excerpt is a filmed homestead/farm segment featuring a parent/host (SPEAKER A) and family/assistants (SPEAKER B and others: Jonah, Sam, John, Rebecca, Josiah) in conversational dialogue. It documents raising and selling pigs (hog shares and whole-pig sales), summarizes expenses and profits (roughly $1,000 profit per pig, $7,000 raised in one example), and follows the family using those proceeds to shop for and purchase a pickup truck (discussion of F-250/F-350 features, rims, towing, and family reactions). The clip also touches on practical farm details (feed, water lines, moving pigs) and emotional moments of pride and teaching younger family members.

You're getting $7,000. What do you want to do with it?
Put it into the truck.
They already sold the one we had our eyes on yesterday. We ordered so much pig feed, we don't have room. We sell half hog shares, which comes to about $1,100 retail. Whole pig, $2,200 revenue. I thought this video was going to be about him raising these pigs to raise himself some money so he and Jonah can get a truck. I think it's still there, but I think it's about giving him some attention he needs. The joy that he's just getting some attention. So glad I did this with him. With 7 pigs left, not even counting the 3 we already had and sold as livestock, that's like 15,000 $750. We need to move pigs. If Lucky will start. You guys ready to move? Hopefully I'm going to show you how easy this can be. All right, back up. After you get the ramp in, one person on each side, okay? Sam and John, this time I won't leave my post. Good job, guys. Same deal, guys. I'll hold them back, you guys put up the ramp and let them out. Let it go. Let's see what happens. What's going to happen?
I think it— I think it stopped.
Oh, they're going to get out on their own. Not full at all. Supposed to have been draining out of it. Pigs are gonna love it. Well, they were born in this pasture and now they'll live out their last days in this— well, I say pasture, this is a forest. This is the pigs' happy place. You want to walk? You want me to carry you?
Okay.
Is it filling up?
I don't want to rest this thing open.
So it was, um, yeah, so it's draining. It was draining, but is it filling up now? Yes. All right. Oh, this has got to be turned around. No, this won't work. They will tear this up. It's got to be sitting against a— the fence. Hopefully it's not too heavy to move yet. Now do your rock thing to level this. We're done. You got the feed filled up?
Uh, yeah.
Okay, good job.
I think I ate buckets.
Oh, hey, you came to get our help, huh? So how did you pump that water? Well, that's a good question. It's coming off the mountain. We have a creek way up over there. We ran a 1,000-foot line down, and then we have water lines. Now this is totally gravity fed. Yeah, I didn't see it going up from the pond.
Man, oh man. Look at that one. That one must be real happy. Oh, super pro.
My late father was a great businessman. One thing he taught me that I'll never forget is you need to double your money from your expenses. After feed costs, processing, traveling to the processor, we're at about $1,000, $1,100 in expenses So Pop would be proud, right at about half. That means at the homestead level you can profit $1,000 per pig. That means you're getting $7,000. What do you want to do with it?
Put it into the truck.
Let's go! Look at this. Okay, we got one picked out on the internet. We just need to make sure it's good to go. You're Oscar? Yes, sir.
You had to use 2000 Ford F-350. Do you still have that? So basically we're looking for a Super Duty. Yeah, we want at least the F-250.
Well, they've already sold the one we had our eyes on yesterday. The Raptor.
I know, what is that?
Not— we're not getting the Raptor. More like this Super Duty. Got to be able to pull the track loader if we have to. I like that sound. Mom just got right in.
It's huge. Can you handle this?
Yeah. How do I look? The big car, maybe a little harder to drive and get around, but safer if you ever get in an accident. You like that? Have you sitting in the driver's seat yet? Speakers behind the seats.
'95.
And it was a diesel.
No, that's right.
I had a grill. I had a grill in the back, speakers behind the seat. He did. The F-250.
He would come and he would bring meat. He'd bring meat and a cooler and his grill, and he'd grill out.
Yeah, that's why she dated me.
Oh, whatever. Thank you for the good luck.
It's more of a teenage boy truck. This one's tricked out. Look at those rims. So he's got a brand new one that's just a few more thousand than the used one. You want to see why? It's black. Okay, imagine a 2500 below that price. Too big of a jump for this black one. Oh, this has got a big dent, Jonah. He says it's okay.
We gotta get some money off.
She needs some money off. You're gonna have a dent.
I really like this one. Why? I don't know.
You like the dent in the tailgate?
I just don't look at that part.
20,000 less miles, a couple thousand dollars more, that might be worth it.
It's got nice little things. Yeah, and it's a, it's a 2020, so it's older.
The rims are a little extra though, aren't they? I like that. Those tires are going to be expensive. No, I guess you could get new rims that are more reasonable.
No, we got to keep these.
You like— are you going to put two 10 speakers back in like I used to have? In high school.
Boom, boom!
Oh, and he likes this ram cage too.
You could ram things.
You can bust through the gate.
Yeah, instead of open.
Rescue, rescue the lady. You sure you don't like that one? Definitely lower profile. Oh, so that does get out of the way. Yeah. Fifth wheel. They've been smoking in that one. I don't know if that ever gets gone. How's this one smell?
I feel like it's kind of stinky. I don't know, I don't know if we're ready. I'm kind of ready to go home and eat some lunch.
It does stink.
I don't necessarily smell it right here.
We're all sniffing. I don't know if it's smoke. Did you smell smoke?
I don't know if I smelled smoke.
I think you're smelling whatever they use to clean it with and perfume it with. These rims are a turn-off, and tires. They're not going to be good. They're not going to be good for towing. We're looking at this F-250. They've got these fancy rims on them. Would it be something that you could do is help us find some regular rims and more all-terrain, all-purpose type tire? Yeah, that's something I could look at. What year is the truck? This would be a 2020. I mean, we could take this off. Yeah, we saw that too. You're taking off, and probably, Rebecca, can't we take this off too, or not?
Yes, you can. There'll be holes in your thing where these bolts—
uh, don't know if those come off. How come I'm more attracted to the more simple look? Would you be embarrassed driving in this?
No.
Like pull up to a homestead event in this? Would you be embarrassed? I go to our friend's house. No, not that we would. We can't all fit in here, but I'm not embarrassed. What do you like about this truck?
I like this rubber mat. It's amazing.
What about these cloth seats? That's fine. Are they easily cleaned?
We could probably get some sort of product for them.
Can you see us hauling stuff to the metal yard next week out of the metal stall?
You take this on the trip with Josiah. Yeah, you can put your luggage.
We got our man trip. Oh, and when we go camping on the Mighty Manual Camp. Yeah, and that can protect things from the rain. I think that might not be so terrible. You know, I get stuck in my ways. How many people does this hold?
5, 6? This turns up.
Oh sweet, that means we won't be using your Suburban anymore for farm stuff.
I'm glad.
We won't be hooking that trailer up.
I like these.
Yeah, I just found out we could take them off. Look, look, look, a little internet research. And look, look, those aren't even real screws. It's just taped or clipped on there. Are you still gonna like it if I de— um, de-trick this?
It's a truck, I guess.
We're having a hard time getting away from this one. Low miles. It has a fifth wheel. This guy only had one owner. We pulled the trigger. Always getting there, it's always nerve-wracking, big purchase. I'm gonna send them home, they're hungry, and I'm gonna be driving this home, and hopefully within an hour. You ready? Yeah, I'll show you a few things here. Okay. Do you want to hop in? We can start up and I can show you some of the features in this. Whoops, does that glow plugs? It's been a while. No, you're good. Yeah, and it's in the mornings, it will— it'll tell you. So a little glow plug thing will be on here and then it goes off. It goes off really quick, about 10 seconds. Okay, here we go. I can't think of the— I don't know, have I ever drove a car off of a lot? Like a new used car? It's so much nostalgia here. My dad had an F-250. That was my first truck when I was 16. Now Jonah's getting an F-250 from this same dealership. It's gonna have go, I know this. My gosh, it's a beast. This feels pretty crazy. Pretty high up, drives smooth. We're gonna say, what'd we do without a truck for 15 years?
What would we ever do without a truck?
I see what Josiah thinks. What do you think, Mr. Henry? Is that a truck? What do you think, Becky? You laughed when I pulled up.
Yeah, because the Ford symbol's lit up.
It had lights. It's got a light on it. Josiah, it's big. Yeah, what do you think?
It's very big.
Y'all worked hard. We're going in on this together. Put down the— hey, we took the $7,000 and made the deposit on this thing. You're gonna enjoy that for 30 years. Check it out. Oh, he's jumping right in that seat. You like the truck? What do you think? You just fitting right in?
It's such a big truck. Yeah, and we have two cars now.
How's it feel? It's sitting pretty high, huh? Yeah, look at that. You know what this means? For you and Jonah? Freedom. That's what driver's license means. Yeah. Oh, look at you guys. Now we're gonna have to get you a car seat in here. We have to get a car seat in here for you. Yeah, you like that idea?
Yeah.
You don't. You have no idea what I'm saying, do you? Do you like hard manual labor in the noonday sun?
Yeah.
Do you like dishes and making beds?
Yeah.
And cleaning up the house? I thought this was stock, but yeah, Rebecca's probably right. Previous owner probably added that, but I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of a bit of this tricked-out stuff. Trade it out for some regular stuff. What do you think?
Strong.
You're grinning from ear to ear? Yeah. The guy I checked out with said he hauls his 11,000-pound camper over the Saluda Grade and can't even tell the difference. Letting Jonah drive on our parking lot. Boy, that's the future. Look at that. You two driving off somewhere. That's how it's gonna go. That's trippy. I'm 44, I have a 16-year-old. I have a guy training to be a driver. Very responsible guys though, very responsible. And we get to associate that farm work and that work that they get up and do every morning with something like this. And this, that's what you get. You work hard, you can play hard.
