Building Our Own Grocery "Store"

A family clears 1,200 sq ft of forest to build a silvopasture and grow their own food, ditching grocery stores. They get stuck in mud, chainsaw through trees, and use SeedTime garden software to plan a perpetual-harvest garden with weekly tasks and succession planting.

In an attempt to eat and consume the best quality food for our health, for ourselves and our children, we're quitting the grocery store. To do that, you have to start with foundations. We're building our own grocery store. How do you like our new beanies? This week's meat groceries. And we're not gonna have aisles and shelves. We're gonna have fields and gardens. Happy Sunday seed day! I got my two main crews. This family is working hard to grow our own food and eat what we grow. Sundays are great because usually there's no distractions and we can focus 100% on the farm. I've learned that taking the truck on a cold day enables little man to go with us. Yeah, that's where you belong, with us, right? Well, we've come to a stop. It's muddy and we're stuck even in 4-wheel drive. I got the chain to safely get us out of here. See the way we're sliding and the way this slopes? We could end up down in there. There's sliding. We've just about wasted the whole morning. Look, I'm about to hit that tree. Can you come get right here? Pull me. Hey, you did good. So for the first part of the day, even if we're set back and we don't have that much time, we're going forward clearing this forest for some pasture. It's 11 o'clock. Lunch is at 12. Feels like the whole morning has been wasted. Serenity now. Serenity now. Serenity now. It was really bothering me this morning. Still is bothering me. And I'm like, Rebecca, how do I not stress out? And she says, well, what's your deadline? So what are you trying to do? And I said, well, we're clearing the pasture. She says, you'll have all winter. I just put these pressures on myself. I'm gonna raise my blood sugar stressing out like this. I'm just kind of curious, what did it get to while during that stress? We're gradually rising. Okay, at least it's not a spike. I bet you it'll all go away once we start chainsawing. There's a cluster. We've got 30 minutes, but 30 minutes is better than no minutes, and it's one step closer to converting this pig land into an amazing silvopasture. You can see where we're going with this, right? It's cleared up there. Say before, after. Wow, what we can do in 30 minutes with a good chainsaw and a mighty machine is incredible. We got a pile of brush. We cleared 1,200 square feet. A little log came up, hit this lower windshield, and we're gonna have quite the cleanup job. I guess that's the price we pay for the efficiency here. It's gonna cost something, and that kind of stuff is gonna happen. Look at that little find. Boys have turned it upside Sideways. Can you see it? Can you see the cows and the sheep just enjoying themselves to their fullest? I can see it, mainly because that used to be it. The morning was super frustrating, I'll be honest, and those days happen. And I just keep telling myself, um, you did something. You did something. 1% every day, and it makes a big difference. What did I just do to our pathway? That's a bummer. We just— okay, we're not taking the truck out here anymore in the winter. My blood sugar was 101. I bet you $100 it's down. Get over, baby. Hopefully we don't slide down the mountain. We're stuck in it. Oh shoot, oh shoot. What? Okay, wow, that is a crater. Now I got grit. Oh my gosh, Papa, what? Why is this truck so slippy? Oh, we've got a lot— we've got little sticks here, which is helping. There we go. How much damage did we just do to our pasture to keep these kids warm? Not worth it. Telling you, telling me, reminder, 30 minutes is better than no minutes. Just be thankful for what we did get. Thank goodness for you two. We're out there getting unstuck mostly. They're in here making lunch. We had to get on the pathway to get out and pathway sunk in. You want pancakes? Hey, we're having pumpkin pancakes. Pumpkin peanut butter, milk— no, eggs. Just eggs and no butter. Just 3 ingredients. That's amazing. Low-carb pancake off the farm. Thanks for helping Mom make this. Let's think about the problems we had this morning. Getting stuck, getting a late start. What are y'all's ideas? Gravel it, make it a rural access road, because that's on perimeter of the property and there's nothing we can do about the steepness. Babe, you filled my heart and soul with that meal. Oh. Yeah, calmed my stressful heart.
You gotta calm down, man.
I know, man. One thing this blood sugar— I don't want to call it a crisis— concern has shown us, the stress.
I'm shocked that doesn't create a crisis for me, I guess. So, because my A1C is just fine.
I got homework to do, and that is being too blessed to stress. This is my year 45. Another foundation, this time for the garden, and it meant we're going to be planning our 2024 plot with the new software. Beef broth for each of us. Next year we'll be able to do this show in our home, in our home studio. Very excited for this show with SeedTime planning our garden 2024. Makes planning easy. So excited that the beautiful one is in this show. What do you expect to get out of this?
Well, my garden planned.
I'm excited. I'm hoping to get Maximize the space. Take advantage of the spring, summer, and fall garden back-to-back planting, week-by-week plans. Maybe that's a tall ask, but that's what's necessary to grow our own groceries. I'm so tickled so many of you people have signed up. Over 2,000 people signed up for this thing. Here's the class we're doing today: How to Plan Your Garden or Farm 5 Times Faster with Perpetual Harvest Tag and grow a continual harvest of fresh food all year round without stress. We're a little over halfway. Rebecca's really excited.
We're coming on like 20 years of growing food and it's still hard.
I think this is going to be our— it is— oh my God, why did we not do that? Well, whenever y'all started. Yeah, I know. I guess we just found out about it. But the next time you pull it in from this one, it's going to be the other 6. What we essentially did is the software company SeedTime, the dad and son team walked us through how to plan the garden. We had an event where y'all could watch. It's like 2,200 people signed up for that thing. You guys are excited. And we learned how to plan a garden with this thing to make it a lot easier than just like analog planning. And we're so excited to plan our garden with SeedTime. Rebecca's already on it. Turns out you can plug what you want to plant and eat and put in your garden specs and plan succession plantings, get a printout of weekly to-do list with seed time. We're on this. How pumped are you to get started on seed time? I already got started on it right after the webinar.
It's 5:20 and the webinar ended at 4. I've already been Yeah, I'm so excited.
It's January 7th. Are we too late? No. Okay, so because onions are coming up, I think we might have to—
I, I'm looking at that. So celery and onions, I've got to order seeds. I know that greenhouse, we got to get it cleaned out.
It's packed.
I need to buy the trays. I'm gonna buy all that hopefully tomorrow.
Okay, we'll definitely have to show what you're buying so folks want to follow along.
Yeah, follow along because we're all in on seed time. So yeah, if you want If you did not see the webinar today, look in the description and watch that webinar. It was so good.
It was so good. And now that show, the replay is actually available until the 18th, so you definitely want to go check that out and check out Seed Time. The link is down in the description.
