Buttoning Up for a Super Fun Day

Victor and Rebecca rush through morning chores on their North Carolina homestead before heading to a neighbor's pond for a community picnic. They milk cows, make gluten-free bread and no-bake cookies, fix a dryer vent, and swap homegrown peaches and tomatoes with neighbors instead of their planned hike to Pisgah.

Today, a race against time to get ready for— that's gonna slow us down. Milk has busted in the water. We're gonna go hiking slash puddle jumping with some neighbors. We've got about 2 and a half hours. Just gotta get chores done, address any hiccups like this, and we should be good.
Let me be free.
Gideon herding turkeys back. He moved in today. Good job, Gideon. Proud of that kid. He's growing up. Happy day and welcome to another day in the life of the Rooted Life. You hungry? You're not hungry. You have We are growing what we eat and eating what we grow today. Buttoning up the farm so that we can go enjoy a nice summer day. Oh, there's our problem. I think when we move this around, it breaks. We broke up— there's a half a gallon of milk in there. Beautiful one just made homemade gluten-free bread for the kids' sandwiches today for a picnic. Chapeau. In there and let you guys see it. We'll have to see it in a minute. It's on keep warm. I guess it's rising. Beyond the milk in the cooler, quite the job. I need the cream separate. Look at all that milk. How much skim did you want me to save for your pumpkins? It's my pigs versus her pumpkins. Just enough to like water them once?
Yeah.
I think it's an old-timer thing, watering the pumpkins with skim milk, give them a boost. Let's definitely go do that in a minute. It's my pigs. Some of that skim milk. We gotta clean out this cooler first.
I'm gonna do this in the bathtub.
I think that's gonna be easier. Becky, you look ready. Hey, Gideon and Henry, let's go. What are you up to?
No-bake chocolate oatmeal cookies.
Wow, for the picnic?
Yeah.
Okay, we've got to switch laundry for our guests coming. You want to ride Gideon's bike?
I know I did.
You rode Gideon's bike? Aren't you too small? Got to make sure I can make some rounds, protect our squashes from those Japanese I guess they're not Japanese beetles. Asian beetles, they look like, uh, ladybugs but they're orange. You miss it over here?
I miss all of our stuff under one roof.
We have stuff under 3 roofs right now. It's a nice beach towel-ish. I'm afraid they washed it with Dawn.
Not Dawn, Tide.
Tide. They washed all our, um, what do you call those? What do they call them? They call them something. Textiles after the fire and didn't follow our instructions. That dryer never went, or it didn't dry. High dry? Yeah. That sucks. That's been sitting all night now because I can't keep going on the laundry. Okay, 9:15, it can be switched. What's this?
This is French onion dip.
Did you make your own French onion dip?
I didn't have a mix, so I just made one. Look at you.
Thank you for packing everybody's Lunch.
You're welcome.
You made them fresh popcorn. Cream cheese dip is finished. Hey, we're taking some of the farm with us.
We're getting tomatoes. I've got French onion dip.
What do you do with tomatoes?
And I need to make some mayo because I'm making ham or turkey cheese sandwiches.
Peaches to share with everyone. Those were $10 a basket for organic peaches.
I know.
Oh, we're coming back.
I know, I'm like, you have no idea. Apple season, I'm buy bushels from you, buddy.
What are you making now?
Making mayo.
Let's get this cream separated. We are running out of time. I have a phone call in 10 minutes. Just got off the phone. I've had a bit of a hiccup with the remodel. One of the contractors— we're gonna have to go through formalities with the county. I got some homework to do. Let's go water the pumpkins and the pigs. Are you putting them in that?
But that—
come on, come on, get in. We're not watering pumpkins. Yep, it's rained. We're watering the pumpkins— or sorry, we're milking the pumpkins. By the way, we've mostly had outstanding contractors, um, on this job. There's always one. If you're building in western North Carolina and need some contractor recommendations and maybe some to avoid, DM Rebecca on her Instagram. Come this way, come this way.
We're milking those pumpkins.
Most of it is going to go to the pigs. Let's carry it. I always carry buckets because look, look, it sloshes around and spills, and now we're gonna have to clean that out because that's Henry's— that's actually Henry's garden. You always have to carry a bucket unless you don't fill it up that much. Hey, get me a bucket for the pig feet. Good news, bad news about our Lily hiking trip. Good news and bad news is we aren't going into Pisgah to like puddle jump. That was the plan, but it's kind of ugly. And our neighbor friends are from Florida and they're like, it's cold if you're from Florida, this is cold. We're afraid it's gonna— afraid we might get travel all that way and get rained out. Good news is they've got a pond we can jump in and we could go hike the local mountain. I'm a little stressed out with the county form, you know, the build. So we're gonna go on this picnic. I definitely need to get relaxed before before that comes, or it's pointless. And you know, we're, we're doing a launch. You're seeing these— I'm filming these videos a week ahead, emailing, planning content, working hard to the Homestead Builds. By the time you guys see this, we've had a great launch. But thank you all for ordering the Homestead Builds. Certainly helpful, right? Very soon you guys are going to be building the foundational structures of the homestead. Good for you. Definitely get my attention after you've built them. I want to see all y'all's work. You are the most likely to have done something with that spoon. Here it is. I don't care if it's half there, works great. You can't sit on that basket, honey. Bless the stress. And I want you to squeeze these bugs off these pumpkins. Oh yeah, look, there's several on there. Handful. All right, now you ever heard of Milk-fed pumpkins, like winning state fairs and stuff. A dead honeybee. Oh, hopefully some dog, namely Weenie, doesn't come and lick and inadvertently eat these plants. They're getting hit by these bugs. Josiah! Thought he was coming with the feed. They've got dry food. Okay, just save that for tomorrow then. Change their diaper. Oh no. Oh, you're in the back. That works better with the camera. Yeah, I mean, usually I do that, babe. I know. Is this why it's not working?
I think so.
Okay, so it still ain't dry? Nope.
I came— I had to come over here to get something.
So the dryer vent isn't hooked up? Oh, this is gonna be interesting. Definitely gonna tape this.
You're gonna have to like grab me.
Grab you?
Yeah.
Okay, there we go. Okay, we have it on record.
Okay.
Um, of course, it's still in pretty good shape.
Here, this is how we come out. See, I came over here so I was like, oh, I wonder if you can use it. It's working.
We give you an error message if it isn't?
Nope.
But you just know it is now? Now it's okay.
But now let's see if it blows hot.
Now it has somewhere to take the, uh, the The moist air. Dryer's busted. Yup, we're going to the dungeon over at the farmhouse to do all this laundry because it's worth it. We're gonna have a good time. Yeah, it'll be crazy. You gotta check out the dream homestead build before laundry. Anything before laundry, right? Look at this foyer. Becky, you like your grout on that?
I do, I love it. It's so perfect.
Why are you getting so excited about tile?
Because it's like almost done. Yeah, we can like figure it.
Do it like demolition next week, painting a week or two after that, floors a week, and then we're in. We can see the light at the end of the tunnel. It's sturdy.
Stop!
It'll get more sturdy as he finishes the rail. Jonah, you've already climbed up there. Yeah, it's tiny. We're gonna be hitting our heads all the time. Well, you gotta crawl. Boy, it's pollen. The bees love your sunflowers. Oh, those honeybees are packed.
Are they honeybees or are they mason bees?
Oh, they're— well, that one is a mason bee, but those are honeybees. Got the Paperwork squared away. Friends are here. We're just going to keep it local today. A little water feature at the far neighbors and then back to their house. They have a big pond and the kids are going to really want to go swimming.
You like this?
You like this, Henry?
Short ride to the neighbors.
This is my kind of outing! I haven't traveled more than half a mile from our home! Fish like popcorn!
Clover, get away!
There he goes!
Woo!
Spin real hard. Oh, almost. Okay, last to stay on the mat wins it.
Wait, what?
Wins a peach. Wait, you gotta wait. You gotta get everybody on at once. On the mark, get set, go! Last one on the mat. They're going after Josiah. He's a target. Liam just waiting out, holding out. Oh, oh, oh, they both— Lily got it! Thunder is coming. We just wrapped it up. We just got out of there. Hear that? But we had our party. We had our party. Did you have a good time?
Yeah.
Well, your eyes are red. You're so wet. Yeah, you did good. We found something else you like besides horses. Yeah, the weather apps said 4 o'clock, it was raining. We had such a good time. So good to be making friends with the community, like right next door. And folks, it wouldn't happen if we weren't here. We were literally walking across the street and they come driving down the road and you spark conversation. You have to be home to create community. Where you are, and you have to have patience.
Man, you're back.
Back. I mean, I made bread this morning.
Who loves the bread this morning? I canned 7 quarts of tomato sauce yesterday, and I made 18 buns.
Good Lord, help us to pray. All right, we got some stud muffin burgers, we got some broth. Lily, what'd you make us?
Um, this—
some zucchini and A staple, zucchini. Did we win or lose today? It's not what we set out to do for the hike. It was probably good we stayed home, right?
There's less travel in the car, which is nice.
And to that neighbor, and then that neighbor. Talk about a community outing.
Doing it from another position perspective was really cool. Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen it from that perspective.
All right, close this out, Beck. Happy day!
Happy day!
This is really what we're doing? Yeah, we're unicycling in the 700 square foot house. Yep, there's a lot of things to hold on to, he says.
