Chasing Pigs with My Kubota

Victor documents a day back on the homestead after recovering from injury, chasing escaped pigs with help from family and friends. He sets up temporary fencing, repairs a pond filter, milks a cow for yogurt, and works the garden while showing improved mobility through kettlebell work and getting on the ground.

Feeling more mobile today. So much so, I even did my kettlebell training warm-up. Let me show you. Squats. Plus, well, I'm blanking on what they're called right now. I'll show you. This one's big. Not only was I able to put my hands together, my fingers together, I couldn't— I haven't been able to do that in weeks. I'm able to go all the way around. Doesn't seem like a big deal, but that's a big deal. I was actually able to— you're gonna be able to see that— get on the ground. Look, look, this is big. I could get on the ground. I could get on the ground. And then do my pelvic thrusts, I think those are called. Pelvic thrusts. Now, this is what I'm most excited about. Watch this. Oh my gosh, look at this. Oh my. And the pain medicine has worn off from last night. So I'm hurting, but I'm moving so much better. Garden guy, garden gal with us today. Newly engaged, also known as Benjamin and Gabriella. Jonah has mowed. Doesn't that look nice? Hey, Papa, I have you some flowers. Yes, what? I have you some flowers. Thank you. Come here. Come here. Thank you for the flower. I appreciate that. Let's put it in Willie. What's Sally doing in the way? I'm glad the garden folks are here today because we got to set up pigs. We got to set up pigs out in the pasture because the Homestead Dream Team is coming tomorrow, and I think we could use some help maybe driving the tractor. Maybe I'll be all right, uh, and getting the pigs in the forest. The Holler Homestead and So the Land is coming tomorrow for the premiere, the live, the in-person premiere of episode 6 of Rooted. Let's get my wheelchair out of here. And don't let the pigs get out again. Okay. There's mud there. We won't let the pigs— the pigs got out last night. Remember when we borrowed the pig boards to keep them away from the, uh, the fence yesterday? Uh, yeah, those pig boards were serving a purpose and they were blocking them from getting out of that gate over there. Thankfully they got them in just fine. Good morning! Morning! Morning! Come on, is that a good morning or what? Good morning! Well, you— I didn't know if you were talking to us or to them. Oh, okay. All right, when in doubt, shout it out. Yep. Hey, morning! Don't chop that. You're getting better, getting better. Okay, waking up. All right, y'all did all the little animal chores this morning? Did chores her first time. Oh good. Not doing any chores. Not doing chores, but like Yeah, here. Like, I should label the video Bree's first time doing chores. I'm like, no, you can't do that at the road. No, because she's done chores. Okay, well, let's get in my wheelchair and go around and check the jobs. Yes, my friend. Okay, well, it looks like Jonah's on it. Yeah, you want to use Henry for that? You sure? Yeah. Okay, this is another victory. That's my left hand. It's doing great. My right hand It's better than yesterday. Getting there. My fingers. Big trees. Hey, how much grit are y'all getting? You gonna be able to pull that cart? You guys able to get that? I think so. We got any flat tires? No. Nope. The Henry cart's holding up. Yeah, I like it. After you get done with that, Jonah, fences. Water, feed pans. Try to find the, uh, the pig shed, the pig sled. Think through everything that the pigs need out in the field. Nice. Turkeys eat rooster teeth like it's going out of style. How are y'all doing? That's a turkey a month throughout the year if everybody makes it, plus some to give away. We got some bonus videos for you this weekend. The Rooted 6 trailer, that'll be Saturday. And then Sunday, a bit about this fellow homestead family's struggle with cancer in the family, and just a little something that we were able to do to help. I think it's inspiring. That will come out Sunday to you guys, no cost, on YouTube. I'm hoping it's just the filter being clogged. We brushed it out, we got our suction gravity pool going again, and I think we got it working for now. There's not a lot of pool coming from the pond, so the filter's probably clogged a little bit up there. But we've been using this since before Joel was here, so we're going on— was that 3, 4 weeks ago? That's pretty good. No water chores for 4 weeks. Yeah, look, super clogged. All kinds of crud on there. We got to do what Joel said. This is too much towards the surface. It needs to be about 16 inches down. 16 inches down enough to where the grime on top doesn't get in it, which is what happened, and not too low where, um, it gets the bottom. Can you open that? Yes. Now let's clean this out somehow. Don't drop it in the pond though. I see that's a string trimmer on it, cleaning out the filter. Yeah, string trimmer string, so it's got, you know, so it wouldn't rot. But yeah, it's a little tricky to work with. Look at those two lovebirds. Trying to get me wet. Working on the pond together, how cute. Bonding experience. What we need to ultimately do is what Joel taught us, is put it on a floater. Put it on a floater and a weight and then suspend that at 16 inches under the surface, and then it varies with the water. Because right now, tying it to the pond, if the water goes down, the, the intake doesn't. So it messes off the perfect level for it. Just how you gonna help him? Let's get our pig shelter out there. Good job, guys. There you go, pick it up. We're ready. We've got the waterer, feed pans, fence. How much fence did you bring? Two. We need, I'd say, four. They're going to bring our sheep net in a notch. Yeah, we need to do a source fence right here, guys. You can tell pig grass, they've absolutely just— the cows have just absolutely eaten everything. And then let me turn you slowly. Non-pig grass, see how much weeds coverage there is? So we need to get our pigs started about right here. A source fence right down through there where Arun's going. And then we'll build paddocks off this source fence. It's going really good. See, this is our source fence, this long fence that just went straight out. We can put the Energizer on one end and then we build off of it. Just a good-sized paddock for 3 pigs for a week. Benjamin and Gabriella have got our water going. How do you get 3 grown adults who do not eat pork excited about doing this pig job. They'll never eat this pig. That's how, right there, because these pigs are making this a better place for cows, sheep, and even chickens. All 3 of these adults do not eat pork. Yep, bless their hearts. More for us, Jonas says. How? Well, pigs naturally till and root, and they will till and root this up and they'll get all these weeds. They'll get these weeds right here. These weeds— nobody eats this flower. The, the sheep don't eat it. The cows don't eat it. Look, these thorns too, these thistles. They'll naturally till this area, and then they'll bring up the grass seed that's naturally there, and it grows faster than weeds. Plus, we'll cast seed behind them, and then it'll be this beautiful stuff. You see You see anything left? No, you don't see anything left right here. The cows and the sheep ate it all. They loved it. That's why I need this brush. Why? Look. Oh, is it filthy? Yep. I'm ruining this brush. I don't know, what are you carrying around that in your pocket? It's actually— I have in the city. Okay, good. Do we have any water pressure? No, a little bit, because I think because it's up in the hill, it's so high up. The pump is way down there. Stud muffin or somebody must have pushed the shed downhill. You can see the fence, how it came right up on the fence. We don't have any hooks up here to pull it. Uh, you guys can't— you can't loop it around the legs. If they tie it around these 4x4s, it's too short. We can't pull it. All right, we're gonna have to hope, pray this 2x4 will hold. We got it pulled up. We wanted to move the net over a little bit because we're— today we're going to put her head in this way. It's always easier to milk a cow if she's pointing uphill because then she holds her legs back nice. See how when she's standing up here, her legs are nice and back and you can get right at the udder. Unfortunately, it might be a rainy day, and that's when it would be nice to have them the other way under our shed. Gabriella milking for the first time. Yeah, and she's getting— first time she's getting with it. Yeah, gonna make yogurt today. Question is, am I feeling good enough to open my own jars? I did it! I did it! I don't think that was an easy one. This is a big breakthrough. I'm watching Henry. Well, I feel well enough to watch Henry. Mom can take care of herself. She can take a bath. I mean, she's back, but like, first time I could help and watch the baby while she did that, like 5, 6 weeks. The doctor said though, even though you're on pain medicine, you gotta still take it easy. It's kind of hard on me, especially when I don't feel it as bad anymore. Just resting there, watching the Olympics a little bit, when Mom saw a pig walk down the road again. The pig's gotten out. Ben is up at the lake with the kids. It's just me. I've texted Arun. Where is he? Down at the curve. Way down at the end of the— at the lake? Okay. Okay, Arun must have got my text. He's coming out. Arun, we'll get in Willie. Where are they getting out? Thankfully the two are in. You know what we could do? Set this net up around them. They're buried under the hay. How loose is that? That's not loose. This is crazy. Where's that pig getting out? Okay, there it is. It's gonna— it's coming back down the road. That's good. What about that? Can it get underneath those? Yeah, I bet it lifted that red one up. Arun, lift that red one up. That pig board. But is there a gap there? Tiny. Arun's got a pallet back there. He's untying. I feel like that'd be more destroyed if that's where they got out. Is this loose? We've got a little bit of skin melt. Let's drive over to him and then maybe I'll lead him. Oh, he's running back to the lake. Everybody put your seat belts on. Maybe we can herd him with Willie. That might work. This pig is getting onto the other property. Pig is coming up the dam. Well, we're gonna wear him out. There we go. That's the right way. Good. Hey, Rowan, you want to hop in? We got him off the dam. He's now in the woods. Here he comes. I'm gonna kind of keep him from going this way. Rune's gonna keep him going down. There we go. I told the kids when we were up there, so we'll get some help. There he goes. He's slowing down. I mean, he's not an endurance animal, so we're gonna get him Slow down. With all these numbers, we're getting him going across the bridge. Okay, we got him subdued. Just, just run after him until he's so tired he submits. We're crawling now. We're down the driveway now. He made the turn just fine. He's so tired. Room's on it, but don't let the other pigs out. We're just about to turn around. You can come back. Okay. That pig is worn out. Me too. Thankfully, a human is an endurance animal. A pig is not. Okay, so let's get it. Here's the plan. I don't know where this pig is getting out. There is no breach. She probably lift the pig board up and she probably got right through that, uh, pallet. We're not exactly sure where they're gonna get out. We think it's over there, so we're gonna— we're actually gonna put the electric fence up starting over there and coming around. Maybe that, that, that, that's kind of Jonah's bet where they're getting out. Benjamin is spotting Arun. He's going to keep the pigs off the net. And Jonah, you and Arun are gonna put this net up. We might be having a problem over there. Did it go in? It's right in. We are trying to put up a fence in mulch. Well, we're gonna get all the way around. Uh, Josiah's gone to get us some fiber tubs. Good idea, Benjamin. Let's go around the water. Hand me the line. The water can be our corner. Plastic does not conduct electricity, so it'll be just fine. No, it's on, it's on! Don't touch it. Let her get shocked. I think she knows. Is this the troublemaker? Is this the one that got out? Let's see if he's gonna respect it. He is, he's just— it's not new. It's new. I turned it off. You don't trust me. Do you see that? Now I can't hook that up or ruin myself. I can't reach. Are you guys done? Yeah. All right, I'm gonna turn it back on, okay? Can you guys step over or you want me to wait to get out? All right, it's on. The butterflies.
