Chicken Waterer Always Clean | Never Frozen Either ;)

In this farm‑vlog, Victor Justin Rhodes (the host) teams up with Pete (referred to as Uncle Pete) and crew member Jonah to build a protective cage/cover for an Everflow chicken waterer, following designs from Joel Salatin’s Polyface Designs. After a brief tour of the farm’s cover crops and livestock, they dismantle the existing waterer setup, cut and assemble a wooden frame with precise 4‑inch gaps to keep chickens from entering the water, and install slats and a roof. They then connect a gravity‑fed plumbing line from a pond, troubleshooting fittings, hose routing, and flow to ensure continuous, unfrozen, clean water even in sub‑zero temperatures. Throughout, the video mixes instructional DIY details with casual farm banter, raw‑milk tasting, and a promotional segment for Polyface Designs, highlighting sales, a limited‑time discount, a companion video, and an upcoming live webinar with Joel Salatin.

Pete! Uncle Pete, look who's here! We're getting some back in the mountains, early morning goodness out here, man. We're getting excited over here. Eye in the sky, man, you know, we got that crazy lighting. Look at this, look at this, look at this, bro! You're gonna do another tour video? Oh, you know what time it is. A lot of things changed around here, man. I can't keep up. Oh, whoa, whoa. So what do you got out here? Is this some geese or some turkey? That's some geese. That's meat geese. Meat geese. I need to know. All right. Pete and a crewmate, Uncle Pete, affectionately called. Met him on the Great American Farm Tour, been friends ever since. This is second time coming. He's going to capture another tour video. He did a tour video before Um, I'll link those videos down in the description. His first one and now this one, it did really well, so he's doing it again. Oh wait, look, look at our cover crop coming out, guys. Oh, doesn't that look so much better than the silage tarp? I like this winter coverage plan with the COVID crop. Looks beautiful. So Pete's gonna film us doing chores this morning, and then we're going to build this I'm never gonna have to— I don't think I'm ever gonna have to clean out my water, mess with water all winter long with this water recover for my Everflow water. That's today. You ready to move these sheep? Okay, we're gonna move them from right there. That beaut— look, this is so beautiful, Robbie. You came at the right time, bro. Good time to be in the mountains. I've set up their fence there so they can't go down the road. Lily, ready? Come down here. I'm gonna open this up down here. Pete, we're about to— what do you want? We're going to get the tour just like last time. Is this right where we started? This is right where we started. We started— okay, where it begun, right here. All right, so I'm going to cut you guys off right here and you can watch the tour on Pete's channel. I'll leave that link in the description. Is this right where we started? It is, it is. We didn't have kids last time, but it's okay, you know. We're gonna get on this tour. Hey, we've wrapped up the tour. We're feeding you. Hey, how do you think the tour went, bro? I think it went really good. You guys have done some exciting stuff here. Okay, good. And now you're gonna sit down to the ultimate. We got some goodness here. Look at that, bacon package. She's even brought out the creamy dreamy grits. Are you guys grit people? Oh yeah, you're good Southerners, huh? Oh yeah. Okay, now what about raw milk? No, let's see him try raw milk first time. He said he wanted to try one. I don't want to force anybody. It's really good. It's good. It's like drinking ice cream. I used to drink about a gallon, so— This is Joel Salatin's Polyface Designs, available in the description. I'm built— every day this week I'm building something from it. Today, a water cover. Gonna make copies of that one page because Jonah's gonna go get our supplies ready. —so that then we can just go down there and start building this thing. This is gonna be a game changer. I am so excited about this. Nice. The nice wide layout, landscape layout, makes it easy to print it off and go. We're about to go build this thing. Jonas says he's got a surprise for me. Oh, he did clean up! And I guessed what it was. I said clean up. He said no. I thought— but he cleaned up. Whoa, it looks good, Jonah! Now we can make movies down here, buddy. Thank you, my man. All right, you want to come get the waterer with me? We're going to be inspired by Joel's, uh, chicken water cover. We're going to go by some of the dimensions for width of slabs, but we're going to turn our Everflow waterer We're gonna put a cage over it. The chickens can get, you know, grass gets in there or mulch. I have a filter here, but over time that filter gets clogged up and it won't run. See, water comes in from the pond up here and back down to the creek down through there. So let's get in there, Jonah, and modify this thing. Oh, can you carry it by yourself? All right, thanks, man. We've convinced Pete to stay around. Smoker. I said, hey Pete, we'll smoke you a lamb. Will you stay? He's gonna stay. All right, I think we need to build our cage, Jonah, over this. We'll use these platforms. I think this needs to be shorter. Do you remember why we had it so long? I don't think it has to be so long. Jonah also tidied it up a little bit because Pete, when he was here 2 years ago, helped us clean it up. First things first, Jonah, let's take this off and bring it down to about right here because our hose will sit on here. But I feel like we should probably strap our hose on so it takes pressure off of this. This is intentionally not glued just so you can get in there and clean it out and stuff. I had you take that off so we can shorten it, but I actually think the lower we sit this down to the ground— oh, you know what, it has this fall so it sits there. That's right, it has to be that tall. Okay, cut it about right. We're going to cut it about right here. So undo this so that we can't— unless you, you— yeah, you're, you're, you're about to— where do you think it was? About right here? Yeah, we want a little overhanging. Stay with me, guys. Stay strong, stay strong. Okay, there we go. Ready? I've got to figure out how close you, you put it to the waterer and how high it is. Okay, it's right up on it. Oh, here, here's how much space that you put above it. 4 inches. Yeah, look, this is amazing. The green squares are equivalent 4x4. And represent the space chickens have to get their heads into the drinker. So the cage needs to be right up on the drinker, and they need 4 inches above the drinker. Oh, look, it's critical that the space between the wood rails is no larger, or else chickens will be able to squeeze through and will get trapped in the water. Yeah, so look, this is the other important measurement we need, Jonah, is this one right here. 6 inches from the inside of that one to the inside of that one. That's the minimum. That's 4 inches in there, in between there. Go ahead and attach our 4x4 to our 4x4. I can't build the exact same thing because mine's longer and narrower, but it's just saying just make sure you get this gap right. This is cool because I can follow these plans. But detour to my situation. But I can look and see how they built the frame. Like, they put the inside studs— they put studs on the inside and attach the walls. Do we keep it clean or what? You know what, it doesn't look too bad. Oh hey, it doesn't look like it did when I left. You know, it's not that bad. This guy's got some more tools. We passed the inspection. Hey, all right, I'm about to put this on time-lapse. We're about to Let's go ahead. Let's, uh, let's— I think we're gonna go, we're gonna go right across. And then so our frame will be right here and our slats will be right here. I think that'll work. All right, we've got our arms up. We put a cross board across here. This is going really fast. We've got our 4 corners, our 2x, and then we're doing the 1x 2 frame right now. It's going so fast. Jonah, I think, is going to give us a little platform here so the chickens can get up on there if they want. And then we put slats right here, 4 inches, the 4-inch gap in between, particularly around the water. It didn't take long for Pete to take total charge. Hey, hey, hey, you're just helping. Oh, that's not— yeah, this is— we're trimming up nice. Look how nice this is coming along. 4 inches in between the slats. We had one piece of scrap roof, fits perfect. We had to cut it a little bit, finish off those slats. We rounded out the corners. We're done, guys. We're almost done. We're about to start hooking this up. The home run. All right, how about I leave you guys to this? Because it's kind of a one-man job lining up the hoses. It'll be done. I'll go line it up. It's been a while since we've used this thing, so It's probably gonna be— who knows, I don't remember where I left it. We've got our line coming under the culvert, it's going all the way up to the pond, so it's right here. Okay, let's track it down. Hopefully it's still on and working. Okay, that's right, we hooked it up to a flexible line to go out to the gardens and stuff. I'd like to see if there's water still in it or if we're gonna have to re-siphon. Oh my, I think there's water still in it. Oh, we still got a pool, we still got a pool. Okay, that makes our day a lot easier. Open it up. Let's see if this plastic line is working. Not yet. What gives? It's straight downhill. Not that far. Oh, there it goes. Yeah, a little dirty, but it's working. Yes! Let it run clean a little bit, and then we're gonna hook this up. Make sure it's working. Didn't get clogged up. Just gonna try it. Now that'll take a while because that's a big jumbled mess. Let's roll it up while we wait. Oh look, it already came out! That didn't take long at all. Okay, let that drain a little bit while I roll this up nicely. Stay with me. Oh, snake this through. We still got room here to get under. Yep, here we go. I need to get you guys some new legs, falling. Here we go. Nice. That needs to be cleaned out. We have the line here, let's trace it because I could not find it down there. So I have to kind of unbury it. I found the end. You know, there's not a whole lot of drop from there to here. I have that extra line, so what if I put the extra line, go down the creek with it, and I'll have even more drop? We need a real good suction on the exit. We have a good section suction going in. Gravity flow. We need a little bit more going out. I think everything's going so good. Pretty much, I think it's just grabbing this and taking it down there. Never mind, this is really short. I bet you pass this, patch this or something, but it'll give us a little more fall. That's what we got, so let's use it. We're running clear. Here's how we ensure success. Draw. We get water in this line. We got more draw here. I can pull that hose out more. I've got that hooked up. We're going to clean out this line and fill it up. It's running clear. I need some fittings to connect to that to add this little bit of line. I hopefully, hopefully have those fittings. Hey, wait, yeah, I can— can I get the fittings from here? So I won't need this end anymore. I think so. That's the fitting. This is the extra. I won't need this end. Yeah, nice. Boom. Oh, that didn't help me because this ends a male. Hey, what's taking y'all so long? We were actually just talking about if you had walkie-talkies, we could hit you up in the field and be like, Dad, let's go meet him out there. Look at this! I'm so close for you guys too. I've got to connect two male-to-males. We're almost there, and then we're there. Let's see what I have in this. I need a male to male, two females. Is that it? I'm getting fortunate today. That's it. Look at that, that's it. I'm sure there's a better way, but that's all we got today. Two female quick connects and a male to male to connect them. Okay, we're ready to try this, guys. You're gonna bring that? It's gonna work beautifully. Beautiful. Yes, I know there's a better way than that, but that's what we got. All right, open this up. We should be getting water out of here any minute. We're gonna drag this down, get as much gravity as we can. We will throw this in the creek. After we get some flow. Check it out, this, uh, this wasn't stretched all the way straight. I think we can get some more fall. All right, that's where we ended up, the greenhouse right there. I think honestly that's going to be a good enough fall. So I'm excited. Let's try— you know why I'm excited? Because This water will never freeze because it's always moving. Even in 9-degree weather, it ices up around the edges, but it still flows. It's always clean because it's flowing, and now it'll never be dirty. Don't know, they won't clog up their filter. Well, I should say never, but not nearly as easy. There we go. All right, we're wiped out. Putting this plumbing puzzle together. We're almost there. We've got this end hooked up. I'm sure it's going to leak a little, needs a little bit of touch-up, I'm sure. But Pete's got— I think we might be dead here. It's not, it's not going in. Oh, we're almost there. You want to strip that plastic? We just need to get something on here to get some grip. I think it's our male connector that's a little chewed up. That'd be a shame. One connector away from at least trying this thing. Okay, we're out of male connectors there. Found one in this box. Try this, Pete, it's got Teflon on it. That's the same size nipple, I guess it is. Just do it by hand. No, just do it by hand, you'll strip it, I think. Because I think the Teflon will hold it. Well, look, see if it's going in good. Yeah, I think it actually is. So yeah, turn it with that. Don't you strip it though, man. We don't need to go to Lowe's for this one part. You don't have more? No. How would I— why would I have these laying around? All right, we're just gonna stop here then. Those little plastic end pieces. All right, put it on there, buddy. Turn it on. Now we're just gonna fill it up right here, guys. It's not Now it's closed down at the creek, so this is going to fill up. And Joan, I'm gonna have you run down and open it at the creek. We're filling this up. That'll give it an extra pull. Okay, it's full, so go ahead and turn it off and go turn this off down at the creek. And guys, as soon as he turns this off down at the creek, we turn it on up here. Do you understand? So we keep that in the same— see, this line's full of water, so as soon as he opens that, all this pressure is going to pull it. Okay. Yep, go ahead, go ahead. It's pulling. Cool, it's sucking it. I can tell. Yeah, now give it a minute to adjust. Okay, chickens, you got water always clean, never frozen, and now thanks to Joel's new book, never dirty. No chicken can jump up on there, clog it up. That's a reason to celebrate. Guys, I've built 3 things from that book this week. We built this winter housing, we built the pig ramp, and now we built a shelter for our waterer straight out of that book. We've sold 2,500 copies last time I checked, and the rush is about to come as we close cart on our special. Through Sunday you can get 10% off. You get a bonus companion video where they go over the 4 of the most popular builds explaining how to build them. Joel's signing copies. I'm giving you a surprise motivational sticker. We're doing a webinar on Monday, but you've got to get in Sunday by midnight. This Sunday. It's Thursday as I film this. You'll see this Friday the 23rd. So what would that make Sunday? The 24th, 25th, 25th, and then we'll hop on that webinar the 26th for 2 hours live with Joel, but you gotta get order, and the books will be shipping out next week. Let's break the internet. Let's break Joel and his farm. Let's, let's send them back to the printer. I think we'll sell out, I really do. 4,000, so get in there while you can. Link down in the description, polyfacedesigns.com. Yeah, so forget this. Look how nasty, look how dirty. That was clean this morning. It's heavy, it freezes. I just want to throw it. I just wanna— I just wanna— but I won't, I won't. It does serve a purpose, maybe out in the pasture where you can't have overflow water. Bye-bye, bye-bye, no more water chores inside our winter housing.
