Chickens Ate ALL My Eggs, Until Now

Victor Justin Rhodes and his family troubleshoot their chickens eating eggs using fake eggs, crushed eggshells, and calcium supplements like aragonite and kelp. They also handle routine farm tasks including milking, moving pigs, and fencing work.

They're still eating them. We're supposed to check them a lot. That's best practice. Does that really happen? How do I know that the chickens are still eating their eggs? Because there's yolk all over these. Oh, chicken has busted it, spilled all over the place, and eaten some. Fake eggs could work. Just need to order them because then if they peck a fake egg It's hard and it's unsatisfactory. But what could we do? Avocado pits? Mr. Brown, I'm assuming you want apples and cheese, right? Okay, you're coming with this morning, all right? Because we're gonna do the chicken dance. We'll get you warmed up. Here's your apples and cheese. I want you to come do the chicken dance with me. No. Okay, that's fine. I don't make you do it. Let's see if Grandma's got any fake eggs. She's been— she's had the same problem. I wonder if she solved it yet. Hello, Grandma? Hey, hey, what's up? Did you have any fake eggs?
Yeah, I got 4. I got 6 fake eggs.
But you're using them, aren't you?
No, I took them out.
Did you break them of the habit?
Yes.
Okay, can we borrow them?
Yeah.
Sweet. All right, you want to go with now, Mr. Brown? Okay, here's your clothes. We'll go get the fake eggs pronto. Fake eggs. I've never really had that problem. Uh, I've heard, uh, people had success with it. Grandma's had success with it.
So, Papa, I think I know where a fake egg is.
Where?
In the cabin.
Ooh, could you get it? Let's get it on the way over there.
Look, I have—
Oh my gosh, I didn't think you minded holes in your, in your knees.
They're always holes.
Okay, okay. You realize we're going to go back and get more pants?
I'll go back and get them.
Okay, hurry up. You like jean little pants?
Sure.
All right, go get your shoes on. I'll cut these into little pants for you. Hey, use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without. Get in. I'm making you shorts, bro. Look at here. You like them?
Yeah.
All right, we're gonna solve this egg problem today.
All of the chickens eat eggs. Okay, last night there was about 2 chickens out.
But we're gonna solve this.
Then they started pecking at the eggs when I set down the eggs.
Ooh, oregano. Ooh, oregano. Do we have any oregano? Okay, so get to the core of the problem. Well, they're probably bored, uh, but they could be lacking calcium. Let's make sure we get them eggshells. Put your shoes on, bro. Play shoes right here, wear those. If I were Mr. Brown, I'd just grab whatever shoes I could. Everybody, let's go. Is that from your cabin? Sweet.
They're fun to play with.
A wooden one? We could use avocado pits, but I don't have any avocado. You could use golf balls. You could use smooth river rock. Do we have any smooth river rock? Good morning, Grandma.
Over there, they're—
where?
They're hanging on the door in a bag.
Okay. Are you looking for aragonite? See, aragonite is a calcium. Is that it? Is that a Nutri-Balance? Is that for chickens? We could maybe try that. Better than nothing. Do we get us some aragonite? Yeah. Okay, let's get kelp. Let's see how they're doing on that. They could, they could be missing minerals is why they're eating their eggs. While we're trying to solve the world's chicken problems, we're gonna have a little fun. This is for a fan, Beatrice. Thank you so much for watching. When Beatrice is undergoing treatment for cancer, and when she was at one of her treatments and her dad asked her, hey, do you want to watch Frozen? She said, the only thing I watch is the chicken show. So Beatrice, we're gonna make a little video for you. Comes out this weekend. It's going to be called the Chicken Dance. So guys, we just happen to have everybody out here. You got your chicken feet on? Gonna do the chicken dance? Oh, oh shoot, you gotta crush them, bro. That could be our problem. Oh my gosh, you gotta crush the eggshells or they learn. You gotta make them not look like eggs. Looks like Mom's doing the crush the eggshell dance. Really, Teddy? It's gonna be something when those chickens get out, buddy. Look how real these look.
Yeah, so they'll peck these in the minerals.
Somebody told me they might do that. The lid is too, too tall. They were— yeah, somebody said in the comments they'll probably, they'll probably get their own little private place. They didn't poop and the kelp's still there. Wait, we just think Katie's gonna be all right. Okay, I'm gonna help. You're gonna hold Teddy because that goose is probably gonna attack. All right, here they go. Free the birds! Yeah, they didn't eat much kelp.
Nope. There is a doodoo in this.
Is there? So I need to lower that like half. Too tall, the chickens can get in there. I need to lower it to about right here. The lid needs to be— they're loving these eggshells, guys. That's telling me They're needing the calcium. All right, Mom, see what happens. Let him go.
Scared.
I'm worried about you. Let's do the flap your wings.
I'm wondering if the chickens ate the shells because they thought that was breakfast.
We tricked them. You're gonna set up the sprinkler?
No, ultrasonic.
Oh, okay. So we have a cat in the tunnel. It was 31 last night, so we put our low tunnels up. We got a motion sprinkler that would be useless for them underneath that, but we did get an ultrasonic tool. It makes a noise and it keeps the cat away because the cat will in our garden. All right, let's see what we got here, guys. There's an egg and it's not eaten. Let's feed these guys.
Can you clean their water out?
Yeah, these guys are tilling and prepping this ground for another garden. Thank you, Mr. Brown. Mom's back with her ultrasonic. Is it going off? And we can't hear it. Is it always going? You think Teddy can hear it?
No, Mama, put it in a second.
He's upset.
Yeah, he's looking for it.
He doesn't like it.
Okay, I pointed it at the cat and it went—
well, they might do that, I think. Hey, Brumms, get out! Oh my gosh, please, Teddy, look, he's trying to go under it. Oh, he's on the Agribon, punk! He ripped it. Let's try those sprinklers too soon, guys. Come on, come on. I think he must hear— he's going right to it. He's right in front of it. Oh, look, he doesn't like it. Speaking of tilling, everybody do the scratch. Get him out of there, Teddy. Good job. He's got a use on this farm after all. Look, she's gonna reward him. She's making him sit.
Sit, sit.
Good boy.
Done.
Two more chicken posses left. Is that for Penguin? That's for everybody else? Let's let them out.
The Penguin!
The Peck!
Penguin!
All right, everybody give me the Peck! One more while we have the mama. She's not doing it. What in the—
let me do it. That's weird. Nope.
What is wrong with these guys? They do the like the Still head. They keep their head still.
It was so early in the morning.
Let's go try it with somebody beside us. See, this is weird. Y'all gonna do it? See, you gotta keep your head still and move your body. There it is. Look, that's our problem there. Look how much they're eating those eggshells, guys.
That's because they don't have their food.
They do have their food. It's official, we're gonna raise this at least 3 more inches. Hired my buddy Ben whenever he can come and do it, and we're gonna replace that wheel. This one's flat too. We got two flat tires over here. I could drive to town, go to Harbor Freight, get some, but that's— it's 30 minutes to town, 30 minutes back, guys. Just worth just girding up our loins. Let's order some if Ben's not coming soon. Okay, we got 30 minutes to milking time. I think we can go do the big pigs, but first we got to get one of these chickens to do the— what would you call it— the steelhead? Bobbing head?
Bobbing body?
Bobbing body, I like it. How are your little piglets, Josiah? They're not tailing too much. That can be a good thing for having them follow the cows. Where are they at? Oh, I hope so. Good morning! You staying warm? Watch this. Why is they not doing it?
I think they're too cool.
They're too cool for it. Who should we try? This isn't working. They're all being goobers right now. Come on, let's go maybe catch an old lady. All right, catch that golden one right there.
Do it!
Don't do it, man. What's the deal? Oh well, we're gonna have to axe that one from the dance. You trying to do—
catch the original one?
Okay, one last attempt.
He's doing it, looks like.
All right, Josiah, we got chores to do.
Yeah, we have someone laying on the fake eggs.
They're eating the grass. I love you guys. Amazing.
Look at that.
I'm thinking they could follow the sheep, spread the cow and sheep manure, break the fly life cycle during the growing season. In the winter, tighten up areas, put them in the woods to start clearing for silvopasture. Gideon, you can come with me to milk.
Are you milking the first cow?
What about you, Lily?
I may be there in a second.
She's in her fort. Can you come?
Yeah, I'm gonna go be there in a sec. Can I feed her a scoop?
Yep, go ahead. Do you have enough for 5 scoops?
Yep.
Okay, the cloths. Rebecca got them started yesterday. I don't know if she put them in the dryer though. Hang on, bird. You coming down?
Yeah.
Good deal. Where's your sweater?
I don't need one.
And shoes. I see they didn't pick up their fort.
Oh no, of course they've done that.
Did you switch my clothes to the dryer? I did.
Yes!
Are you coming now, Gideon? That's not a sweater, that's a coat. Is that what you want? Yeah, Gideon, come here. Where's your sweater, bro? Okay, do you want to wear it? You don't have to wear both, but one or the other. Come on.
Oh, that one.
Okay, come on, give Mom a hug and a kiss. I noticed that the Lowe's order is picked up. Yes, it was finished yesterday and Randolph's picking it up today. Pig shelter, here we come. Maybe this weekend's project, because I don't think Randolph will be done with the chicken fence. We need that Energizer. Yeah, he won't be done with it, will he, by the weekend? Well, couldn't we—
if— are we following— where are we putting them?
We're gonna try to follow— we're gonna follow Lucha first. Okay, wait, why are we doing that? Why don't we just go straight to the We could tie them—
we could tie it into the lane.
Okay, yeah, that's true.
How are we gonna get them out of there?
We'll carry them. They're still little. Okay, we'll let you carry them. Okay, no, I know why we're putting them behind the luchadors right now, not just straight to the use. We just want to really make sure they follow a bucket. Yeah, they're bigger, they're a little calmer.
They don't tear stuff up too.
Oh yeah, well, already down there they're not tearing stuff I thought.
No, that's great.
It's crazy, they've been there like 3 days and that's fun. Just a few little marks. There we go, Lily. Okay, feed her the rest of the alfalfa. What's going on, Lily?
I'm trying to get that front. I'm trying to bring this forward.
Just put it in there. Good job. What'd you say?
Let's get talking.
Now that it's spring, we need to mow behind the cows and sheep, and we move everybody every day. Yeah. So do you think you and Josiah would be interested And moving people right now while I'm milking?
I don't know, I kind of like to distribute it.
What would you like to do right now?
We go get a snack and then we'll like come and help. Oh, we'll go string trim the lane.
You could do a snack and then string trim the lane.
That's fine, we'll do that.
She wants to do it again, guys. She wants to do it again. I'm going to be nearby, Lily. I'm going to walk this lane if Mom wants to power the pig fence off this lane. Let's go make sure it's not grounding out anywhere. So we're gonna get the Idaho pasture pigs out here behind the lucha doors till we're sure they're gonna follow a bucket. Because if we're following the, the ewes and the cows and we're way over there and they need to go there, those pigs are going to need to follow a bucket up down the road and into there. So we need to make sure they're going to be able to follow it for a good bit. All right, I got it cleaned up here a bit. We got a little more work to do right there. Let's, uh, check on Lily. How you doing, Lily?
Okay, I forgot to put the lid back on.
Yeah, put the lid on. You're not doing it. You need help? Let me check on Mom and I'll be right here to help you. Yeah, I think it's a good idea to electrify that lane good. Just run the pig fence off of that, huh? Yeah, we love the grid.
Did I tell you that I'm gonna enter this pumpkin— these pumpkins into—
you told me that.
I want to put pallets—
tell me—
I want to put pallets underneath them when they start getting big.
Tell me that as many times as you want.
And then we'll put— and then you'll pick it up and put it in the back of the truck and we'll take it to the fair.
You get on the other side and I'll get this side.
Let me just finish this sheet.
Okay, I've got the milk Broken its shower's filter. Did you change out my ice packs? Okay, you spot me open the door. Thank you. Oh, it's wet. Yes, you did it, didn't you? Yeah. Why is it— oh, it's soaking wet in here. Okay, take this. Take a milk from me.
Thank you.
Lily, there's water everywhere. I know. I don't like getting my socks wet. It's okay, you're learning. You gotta dry them off. Do you dry them off?
No.
Well, that'll do it. You're barefoot. Come on, Miss Thing. Boy, you're looking good, losing your winter coat. You're looking smooth and slick. Hey, you guys back? Yep, just in time. It's about time to put her— put them out the field. I'm almost done. You did the lane? Good job, my man. Proud of you boys. Good strong 2 gallons, maybe 2 gallons and a quarter. Randolph got us our supplies for the pig shelter. That plus 2 wheels, roof panels. A handlebar and a 2x4 is all it's going to take. Thank you. That'll make some waterproof pigs, won't it? Yes, it will. I talked to Ben, he's the guy who welded this.
He said he could easily lower these wheels, therefore raising this cage. I found another egg here. Okay, I just put it in here.
Hey, I met yesterday. Have you got the eggs today? Come on, we're gonna break them out of it. We're gonna get Serious. He hired Lily. Let's see how that goes. She's got a fort in the back.
Hey, she's coming.
She is?
I heard her.
Okay, look at this fort.
I made it all by myself. Papa, and look, I'm gonna show you something very cool. Watch.
Come on.
Okay, show me.
A piece fell off, but you made that? Yeah. Cool. Just grabbed the thumbnail for yesterday's video. 3:30. Jonah out there already? Jonah's out there already. Let's get out there with him. IKEA explosion!
Woo!
Good job, Rebecca, building us a— where's this going? This dresser. Trying to get her to let us give a house tour for a bonus video this weekend. You guys have been asking that for a while. Why not do a quarantine in the country type of video. Hey, what's that dresser going for, Rebecca?
That's gonna be all of your camera equipment.
Oh sweet, it's going right there. It's replacing that metal thing. Cool. I told her we don't have to show this room. It's not like we showed over there.
We won't show the junky room. And I'm thinking Will you show it?
We'll have to include it on the tour. I'll tell her, just relax, you know, don't worry about getting it perfect. People just want to see a tour of our home and farm. Looks like, uh, Randolph's got his posts in. Posts are looking good. The boys are doing the sheep. Let's move the luchadors and then let's get out there and continue working on the lane. Did you move the animals, give them water and everything?
You're gonna— because since we're gonna be going that way, we're gonna take them water.
Okay, we've been going that way, now it's time to go over. You think? Okay, this looks good. Thank you for— thank you for string trimming.
I didn't do that today, I did that yesterday.
Yeah, thank you for doing it. Okay, how are our piglets doing? A little bit of rooting. Man, they're just keeping mostly this intact. But there's promise, there is promise that if I want you to till, I just keep you there longer and you will. Look at that, I like it. Because these guys have been here like 4 days. If I wanted them to till, I could tighten this up, maybe putting this— they're still little— put them in this little bit of an area and they would go at it. If I don't want them to till, keep them in a bigger area like this. And move them every day. Are you going to be the perfect homestead pig, huh? Could you quite possibly be the perfect homestead pig? You need a little taming, huh? There you go. You guys are fine. Wind damage much better. It's 3:45, got a little over an hour before before supper. I want to work on that cow perimeter in the silvo pasture, but let's get these eggs. Did the fake eggs work? Oh, she's growling. Sitting on two fake eggs.
You can have them.
One real egg. Haha, another real egg. I think Lily got him early. We never caught up with Lily earlier, did we? This is gonna break them from their egg-eating problem. Lily, how many eggs you get earlier? Just 3? Yeah, just 3. Hmm, maybe they will like some more today. Sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep! Come here. I'm all right. I'm okay. You're gonna live a long, happy life on this farm. I wish they'd just let us walk up to them and just bear hug them. Will you let me bear hug you, Moose? No, you not either. Well, hey, Lily, I didn't know you were coming. Yeah, oh cool, we made it. All the way to where I need to here, then I'm going to put a temp fence just to mark the area for the clearing crew. They're going to come through and get these less desirable trees, open it up for a silvopasture. We marked all the way— oh gosh, we probably marked 500-600 feet of fence. We're gonna be ready for those cows. How's it coming?
It's coming.
Is this still the first one or is this the second one?
The second one what?
Don't we have two? Didn't you get two dressers? No. Oh.
This is the same one.
Wow.
A little bit more TV.
I'm gonna have a luxurious video equipment station.
You're gonna have to share it with me a little bit.
Okay.
I'll do that.
