CrAzY Bull, Teat injections & Getting a Walking Tractor

A family homestead day packed with animal care, equipment fixes, and field prep. They treat a cow's udder issues with injections, build a freeze-proof chicken waterer, repair an electric fence a bull keeps breaking, and borrow a walking tractor to shape garden beds. The BCS won't start, so they plan to haul it out with a trailer and get a mechanic involved.

Natural medicine for, uh, honeys, you know, thick and, you know, just irregular udders. Huh, how about that? Milk, irregular milk in the udders. Oh my word, I think the kids are building a basketball goal. Their little basket they did have must have gotten broken. When your kids are free to learn They not only teach themselves how to play basketball, they build the basketball goal. I have so much, I don't even need to feed Beefcake grain today. Look, I want you to watch something. Chicken's getting water. This is amazing. It's 23 degrees out here right now. Is it this lid on it? Is it the mass of the water, you know, meaning that there's so much of it it's harder for it to freeze? Is it that it got so warm during the day because it was in this high tunnel that it just didn't get to freezing last night? Whatever it is, this is working. This DIY critical mass nipple water feeder. On a very cold streak, we could have plugged it in and it definitely wouldn't have froze. I love it. I love it. Little experiments and things work out like that, even better than I thought or imagined. Hey, stay with me. Happy Sunday seed day, the one day of the week we spent most of the day working on the homestead. Guess what, Beefcake? I got a ton of food for you, but it's apples. He's not a big— little poop corner over there. I see you need a little more coverage. It's starting to be poop-laden. You need more wood chips. Gotta get our lean-to installed out here, get wood chips out here, and we can pull up, you know, change their diaper every day, so to speak. Now, that pig's water, even more of a critical mass, still froze. So that's telling me that high tunnel is playing a big role in warming that water up during the day. And therefore giving it a harder time to freeze at night. Call to inquiry: did you guys notice anything? The feeder was upright. She's been knocking it down, and I think the difference is we found— we put that strap down low, and so it's harder for her to leverage it up. Thank you guys very much. Thank you very much. Keep our new ground supple. Covered. We don't want it to dry out and compact. And we want to kill any remaining grass. By the way, that's one thing we're going to do today is go in town and borrow a walking tractor to shape beds here. Getting set up for Honey's treatment. This could go rough. Last time we put her in the stanchion— well, show that, Austin. This time we're not sticking something in her mouth, we're sticking it in their teats, which ironically enough I think she'll be calmer for. We got everything set up for the cows. Step 1, maybe we should get those sheep quiet. Okay, step 1, get all the cows out. If we can help keep Honey in, we will. If not, that'll be step 2. We'll herd Honey back in. Okay, how's that? Do you want to help me with Honey, or do you want to— I'll just milk Vanilla. Milk Vanilla. Okay, get her out. It's off right now. Step 2, a little workout this morning. Downhill she is in this situation. A little bit more comfortable. 3. Get her in the stanchion. Oh no, it's the fence not working! Did you not turn the fence on? Maybe you didn't. I'll help you, I'll help you. It's not on. I guess not. Oh, it is hooked up. Shoot. Wait, he's breaching an electric fence now? Okay, hang on, hang on, hang on. Can you please turn it off? I'm trying. He's a maniac. All right, you start milking her. Let me give them some hay so they'd be quiet. Watch this, watch this. See, it's with his horns. I don't know what we're gonna do. Hey, hey, hey! He's just gonna go through. Wow, he's busting right through it. You don't care. It doesn't help that this is a sketchy fence. No, sir. No, sir. He's crazy. Yeah, he's He won't, will he? That's the weakest spot. Oh, that's true, that's true. Oh, that's true, it's not connected right there. He knows right there, you know, shocking. I see it's breached right there. Okay, let's fix this. Now that we're done milking, there's less pressure on this thing. I'm gonna shut this. Well, we captured her. I'm sanitizing the teat, the tip of the teat, with an alcohol pad. I had to put 2 in each teat. It's crazy. Just a little shallow adventure. I guess it's essential oils. Oh, there it goes, right through it. We didn't turn it on. Oh, he literally is just breaking the whole thing. Just let him be. Okay, well, I'm thankful that that went very peaceful. That could have went very bad. We may have a new problem with He-Man training him to bust through fences. All right, yeah, I'm gonna fix this fence so that it's more secure tomorrow. Test it, all that. That's the responsible thing to do. We've got to You guys have got to be quiet. Lily, Lily, did we finish the, uh, chaff hay? Did we finish the chaff hay? All the chaff hay that was in the vast shed? Finish all the chaff hay.
What, Papa?
Did we finish all the chaff hay?
Yes, I think so.
What'd we do, leave the radio on in the track loader? Yeah, remember, push down and up. Heading down in the pasture today. Yeah, yeah, hurricane relief, hurricane recovery, one day at a time. We actually finished getting our big pile of rock out of there. Now we're leveling that out, grading it. We've been unwrapping all our fruit trees from their fences. When we're in there with the cows, we're just gonna wrap, uh, we're just gonna cover them with electric, uh, with their sheep net. I am loving these brighter days. In winter, even when it's sunny out, it feels like it's afternoon. You know what I mean? This is bright, sunshiny days. This end of the fence is just kind of— it's, it's beyond repair. There's so many breaks, it's beyond repair. We're gonna cut it where it stops doing that. Tied a new end here. I think it looks great. We just tied it, and now we're gonna— we'll need to pick it up and set it back up because it's not long enough. But luckily we have some extra. It's overlapping right there. Did you get the drone? Did you get some shots of him? All right, incoming cinematic musical montage of the boys getting it done on the machines. Okay, Austin, have fun. Cool music. Just a fun little sequence here. Well, it did stink out here. It's like a we changed their diet. Much more sanitary. And we're making compost, aren't we? We're making compost right next to the garden. I've decided this Sunday seed day, it's sort of a staging day. Get all these little things done. Let's go get that walking tractor for the week. Let's make sure we get our supplies for the week. We're going to cover those wood chips with a lean-to, and hopefully our feed bag too. We're gonna haul our feed situation out there so I'm not hauling out there every day. Just heard from my friend with the walking tractor. He's ready anytime. I'm wondering if I ought to go sooner or later because the boys like to take the truck and go play soccer in the afternoon. Oh man, I think you might have got the short end of the stick.
I did. They say to put them in the dishwasher, but the dishwashers are both going.
Were they clogged? This is our fan, our cooking fan.
You know, they had grease in them.
Burn it up cooking show.
Clogged is the right word.
I'm gonna burn it up cooking shows. Can you make tomato burgers for everybody's lunch today?
Yeah.
Okay, I'm going with the boys. We're gonna go get the walking tractor, and Henry's got some money and is burning a hole in his pocket. All right, did you get your— did you get your shoes? No, I see some out there.
That's why I did. I did it.
Let me see if we have your money. Stop, Danny, get the truck warmed up. We're not going yet. We gotta help Lily get something. What's it you need us to do?
To help me make like a windbreak for the shed. I tried to get some big ones, but they're so heavy.
Why are we doing this?
Because if the wind blows, they'll have protection.
Okay. They certainly don't need a windbreak, but they support me on so many projects, I'm gonna support her on a project. Where's your drill? Again? So what are you gonna do? I don't know. You think you can fix it? Maybe. What makes that come out? So are you missing the nut? I don't know. On the other side? I don't think so. Do you know where our replacement is in case? You finding the stuff? No, no, listen. Oh, okay. Yeah, that's it. Uh-huh. I'm sorry, I'm gonna have to go because I have to get back before their soccer. Here, if you need— if it's missing a nut, okay? It might not be though. I don't think it won't. We were able to get the implement, the bed shaper, in, but the BCS wouldn't start, so we couldn't get it over to the bank. And, um, we cannot pick a 900-pound machine up and put it in the truck, so I'm gonna go home and come back with the flatbed trailer. I'm gonna get this machine fixed for my friend here. It's the least we can do for borrowing this thing. We'll get it fixed, we'll use it, and we'll turn it to him better than it was. No, we're going to take you to the toy store, man. Remember, you got $60 burning a hole in your pocket from your birthday. It doesn't look open. Sunday 12 to 5. All right, here we go. You guys excited? Okay. It's a big toy store. They don't have any big cars, big trucks or anything. Dump trucks.
Can I buy a Lego set for myself?
You like that? Well, hold on to that. Where are the rest of these? Find the rest of these, Gideon, so you can have some choices. We're lucky that was the last one they had.
The truck took like 3 times.
It's a winner.
When do I open it?
That's from the cash from Granny, and then Uh, Grandpa. Okay, okay. Are you gonna go show Mom your toy? Yeah, you can play with it inside. Oh, you're okay? Play with it inside for a little bit while it's clean. All right, you got this. Are you sitting with a little Waylon? Uh-oh, uh-oh, he wants to change. He wants to change. You're in your happy place? Shopping cabinets for the cabin.
I would not call this happy place.
Oh, you know you love this office and working on the computer.
I love the office, but I don't love this. It's just a lot.
What kind of action you see out there? All right, come on, come on, let's go. Hey, my man, fixing up the treehouse. You fixing up the treehouse? Yeah, I like it. All right, goodbye. I gotta go get the machine. I couldn't get it, I have to get the trailer. Please be empty, please be empty, please be empty. Oh, oh, oh, oh, you need this trailer because it sits so low to the ground and it has a ramp and we can just roll this big machine onto this thing. All right, we got that emptied. Let's load it up. Well, so tell me what's wrong with it, uh, right now.
Basically, this came loose.
Okay.
And I just got back from the shop, so there should be absolutely nothing wrong with it. But when this happened this morning, it was kind of overwhelming because there were—
yeah, yeah.
So basically this, uh, let's see, this comes right here. If you come on this side, you'll see. So normally it was like here.
Okay.
But you can see over the years I, I had knotted it to tie up the tension.
Okay.
But typically this is really taut, so it's like right like this, whereas by it pointed out, this means you have to trace this down, pulling out Very excited about that.
I could have rent one. It would have been about an hour away to go get it. So I'm figuring he's not even asked anything for it, but I'm figuring let's fix this, put the money into fixing it. Whatever the difference is for a weekly rental, I'll give it to him. I'd rather keep the money in the community, right? And friends. Mark, our mechanic, schedule tomorrow after lunch. This cable is loose. I pushed it all the way through. I traced it down. It comes in right here. I'm thinking, uh, see if we can't pull this cable through, cuz that, like, look, that pulls all the way through. This must be broken. All I may have to do— this is a speed, so this pulls it. Okay, and that pulls this. I don't think you really need that cable. Yep, it's broke. So if you need that cable, I can just order another cable. Just the speed though, right here. I just won't be able to do it from the handle. Yeah, we're gonna need that because this is stiff and you can pull that up and it'll stay on that higher speed. That cable's connected. Speed it up and let go, it just goes back to normal.
There's a spring.
You can't adjust it. You have to adjust it on the handle. Kind of want to see if anything else is wrong. So let's make sure it'll go. Actually turned it off. I'm kind of thinking we might be able to fix this. Who is this new me? I don't know, we'll see. I've seen if Jonah can pick up an inner cable, throttle cable, oil change pan, and he's going to need to get some oil back. Yes, and we might be able to fix that BCS myself— ourselves. I put in some stuff for Jonah to get at the auto store. That doesn't work out, we'll get Mark to do it because it's going to come down to do I make a pig video on how to keep some pigs in your backyard, or do I fix the BCS myself? Mark can't make the pig video for me, but he can fix the BCS.
Is it going to take you however long?
Oh, I mean, if he gets the right stuff and it's Right as I think. I mean, it might, might go pretty quick. I feel like I have a lot of learning to do with just learning how to run that machine. Well, not just learn how to run the machine, learn how to shape beds.
Is there a bed shaper?
Yeah, I have to have the bed shaper. Oh, it's called the rotary plow. Wow. You like the vegetables, I like the meat. You cut up the root vegetables and I'll cut up the chicken. How about that? Beautiful one and I are on a low-carb adventure together.
Oh, we could have—
now we're mid-40s.
I could have gotten some beets out.
Beets from the freezer. I'll get these thawed out real quick, right, Rebecca?
Yeah, and they're already cooked, so I've parted the chickens.
I've dried them off. Look at this. Oh wow, salt and pepper them and thyme them. Smokes. Oil, I believe, will help it keep crispy. Crispy. It'll help it crisp up and protect it from burning. Chicken turned out good, root vegetables turned out good. Look at this plate, that all looks good. I'd say overall we had a good staging day, set ourselves up nicely for the projects this week. Tomorrow, pig port, showing you guys how you can raise pigs in 120, 150 square feet in your backyard.
