Despite my chronic illness, we're Fixing this Chicken Coop

In this vlog, Justin Rhodes and his family work on multiple homestead tasks while Justin shares a personal health update. The video opens with preparations for incoming ducks, including creating a moist bedding mix and managing anagammos. Lily rescues a broken‑legged chicken, describing how she will house and heal it. The family adjusts their cow‑milking routine now that only one cow is lactating, detailing milking techniques and handling. The main project is repairing the meat‑shack (chicken coop) by removing wheels, cutting legs and braces, and installing new supports, all while juggling other chores. Justin provides a health update about his dental implant surgery, noting two implants succeeded, one failed, and the resulting recovery timeline. The family cooks a Japanese‑style meal with rice, zucchini, onions, beef, and chicken, discussing timing around his surgery. The latter part of the vlog shifts to promotion of the new show "Wilder Still" on Abundance Plus, featuring several viewer testimonials praising the show and a call‑to‑action with a discount code. Throughout, the tone is conversational, family‑oriented, and upbeat despite health challenges.
Chapters
Come here, come here, little boy. Ducks are coming this week. We're gonna need to get our bedding in, guys. Hopefully that's a foot of bedding on each side. Maybe wet it down a little bit as it goes in so we can ignite it. It's got manure in it, it's got wood shavings, a little bit of wetness, a little bit of air. That thing will start decomposing, and it's vibrant decomposition that you want. Your anagammos are going to be in one spot all the time. They're going to be in there for 2 weeks, okay? Just 2 weeks. So we've got 2 weeks to make this modification for the meat shaw. Day 2, here we come. Any babies this morning, Cheesecake? Nope. Your water's good. While she's eating, let's fork some of this dry material in here onto their poop corners. Okay, he's taking it from the middle. It's so dry in there, we don't need to add more wood chips. We just need to move some material around. And then you dinging it up in the middle might encourage them to go for it and get the corn out of there. Josiah, you want to take the camera and show the vloggers that nest Beefcake's got? Okay, here you go. Look, the 3 little pigs dug this up and then now Beefcake's getting into it, but he's so big, he had to make a path. What's going on here?
This one has a broken leg and I'm gonna fix it.
You are? How are you gonna fix it?
I'm gonna put her in a little It's like a little thing where she can get to her food and water nicely.
Okay.
And, and she can sleep a lot, and then she'll get healed like the other black chickens.
Okay.
That black chicken is with her.
Oh, did you— the one you saved, did you actually save that one?
Yeah.
Oh wow, nice.
I'm like the chicken vet around here.
Yes, you are, you are. Normally we just, uh, a crippled or sick chicken and focus on the well ones. It's just way more efficient that way. Lily though, she wants to take care of them. I don't, I don't see the harm. Yeah, we would have fed it to the pigs, so, uh, you can't lose anything, Lily. Uh, all you, all you can do is win and the chickens survive. She's not used to this routine. Come on, she, uh, let's go. We've been milking her, but Now we're gonna dry her off. I guess it worked out. We cut her ration in half for a week. Now we're gonna not milk her for 2 days, 1 more day, and then she's completely dried off. And you can get ready to have your other baby. Now that we only have 1 cow in milk, we're gonna let Joe— you know, we've milked her. She holds back for him, so he's gonna get the, the hind milk down. And then we'll milk again, probably a— probably a quarter or half a gallon. I think he's got it down. You just put that leash on him and tie him up, maybe behind her there so she's not gonna run into his tails. Good. It's easy to pull them off at this age, huh? Yeah, kind of. We're gonna tie him up here at our head so she can see him. He is strong, huh? Now we get to handle you a little bit. You're not You're not so keen to that? You don't like the ear rub? No gusto the ear rub? This is convenient when your feet hurt. This is closer than going in the house. Jonah, get me the drill driver. With a hex head on or a star bit on it. I'm putting it into reactive arthritis. That means I'm continuing to work on this meat shawl. The ducks will be 2 weeks before we know it. So today our goal: get the wheels off, get the storage area off at least, maybe a little bit more, but that will be our goal.
I got your birthday present.
What is it? Sounds like Lego set. No. Uh, it's rattling. Oh, just what a papa wants— deck screws. This is how high it's going right there. Well, we should double check. Whoa, that's way too high. I didn't account for the height to the wheel. We have 3 of these. This is it. Our goal was to get the storage area off and the wheels off. We did that. Plus we cut the legs and the braces. And we got one of the legs off. I wanted to attach these, but I said I'm gonna limit myself to an hour. Pace ourselves. Tomorrow's another day. We had Japanese the other week. My idea. I'll claim it. I'll claim it. Yeah, we're having it again.
I know, I'm so excited.
We get the rice going so it'll cool off so we can fry it this afternoon. Yeah. Hopefully I'll be well enough. I will. Let's just do it. Oh, we got zucchini for it. We've got onions. We've got our beef, our chicken. This is a good meal that we can make plant. And it's delish. We've made white sauce last night. It's best if it sits overnight in the fridge. Mmm. All the flavors just gel. We're going to get my— my implants tested. They're gonna numb me.
Yes.
I'm not gonna be able to enjoy that Japanese.
It'll—
um, you sure?
Yeah, because it's at 2 o'clock.
Okay, we won't eat till 5.
And if even at 5 it's not good, we'll wait a little bit.
Okay, maybe at 6. I was able to do the most of this. I can do it. You want to show them? Here, I'm getting there slowly but surely. I'm getting there. Look at this. I couldn't do this 2 weeks ago. Gideon is vacuuming. Henry is being held by Lily. Jonah's tidying up. Mom's cutting zucchini. We went to the orthopedic surgeon, right? What is it? No, orthopedic is foot, isn't it? Oral surgeon. Good news, bad news, good news. Good news is 2 of my 3 implants took, 1 did not. So basically a 3 and a half month further delay, 1 more surgery, minor surgery. I won't even have to be put to sleep. Good news is they did a couple of numbing shots, but it's pretty much gone. I'm going to enjoy this Japanese meal. A little bonus here, actually filming this the next day, tacking it on the end of this vlog. This is actually coming out the same day, this part. Uh, what's that gonna say? Hi, my name is Sandra Coulson, and Jess just inspires me through her spirit, through her knowledge, and Watching her first episode on Abundance Plus just brought me so much happiness and gave me so much hope that I know that now I can dream big and I don't have to be scared of anything. It's step out on faith and I can get my dreams to come true.
I've been following Jess since the very beginning and and her first garden tours, and she has inspired me to plant my wild jungle of a garden, and it brings me so much joy. We've been following Justin since he was on Permaculture Voices when we were driving trucks and listening to him talk, and then we found him on YouTube. It's just been a long journey with both of them, and I'm so happy that they have gotten together and they are collaborating to make these wonderful shows. Thank you for all the inspiration that you have brought into our life, and we've even started our own YouTube channel now. Thank for everything y'all are doing.
So we just got done watching the first episode of WilderStill, and I cannot even begin to tell you the message of hope that I just so believe is going to spread like wildfire and what it's done for myself and my family who resonate with your story so, so much. And the message in our heads for the longest time was that, you know, these things could happen for some people, but not for people like us. And this community has just squashed that lie in our lives. And we are now, for the last 6 months, sitting on our 4-acre homestead that has healed my soul. And to be able to see that happening for you and the message that you're going to be able to send to people inspires me for bigger things for my family.
Don't take my word for it, you just had word from other Just regular people getting it done, working hard, callusing their hands. I encourage you to check out Abundance Plus right now. We're launching Wilder Steel, the new show. It's available there. Stream it anytime on all the things— Roku, Apple TV, Android, iPhone, all the things— TV, iPhones, smartphones.
