This content was created by Victor Justin Rhodes. This content was uploaded by Victor Justin Rhodes. This is a YouTube video titled "Do THIS and Your Chickens WON’T STINK" (created 2021-06-07). The excerpt is an informal farm vlog/how-to style recording featuring multiple people (labeled SPEAKER A, SPEAKER B, SPEAKER C, plus children named Jonah, Gideon, Lily, and others). The primary narrator (SPEAKER A) walks through a day of farm chores: moving and managing chicks, dealing with a dead snake caught in an electric net, adjusting and using a Kubota utility vehicle, pasture and fence maintenance, collecting compost and wood chips, planting watermelon beds, preparing for upcoming butchering and a TV shoot, performing a Lyme disease urine provocation test in a sauna, and cooking duck tacos. The tone is casual and instructional, mixing practical farm work, family interactions, and personal notes.
Chapters
Happy Sunday, seed day! The one day of the week we can work all day on the farm, no distractions. First, let's move these fat chicks. They've been here over a week, about to wear it out. We don't want a garden here, so we want to go ahead and move them before they destroy it. There's a black snake caught in the electric net. It looks like— yeah, it's gotten— it looks like it's gotten caught in there.
He's definitely dead.
I don't think it could crawl back. So it tried to crawl through one of those little tiny half-inch wire meshes and just couldn't, got stuck. Killed itself or got shocked to death. This is still creepy when it's dead, even though it's black. It's not venomous.
It can bite though. That's it.
Oh, that's creepy.
That snake's—
oh my gosh, I'm skinning it!
That's so good.
Wow. Oh yeah, I basically skinned it. Okay, just now is your time to touch it. Come here, it can't hurt you. Why are you running away? It can't hurt you, it's got no head. Okay.
Wow, it feels so weird.
Yeah, you want to take it and show it to Gideon? Sure. Then throw it in the woods. Looks like I need to string trim before we put that net up. That is some lush, lush pasture. Look at all that clover. I really don't need to put these chicks down. Look at the deposit they made. Look at all this manure. This pasture doesn't need any more fertility. It's great. As soon as these chicks get a little older, I'm gonna put them up further away when they're a little more, I don't know, defensive. We're gonna get them in a pasture that needs it. See how this, uh, is browned out at the bottom of the fence? It's burning it from the electricity. Yeah, that's just taking power away from your fence. So I'm just gonna put it in lightly so I know where the fence is and so I know how far it goes. Might as well let the chicks out. They won't, they won't challenge it. Super happy. Fresh grass. Or maybe not. Now we know exactly where to string trim. We just move each corner in, and that's a string trim it. Look how badly that needed it. It didn't look so overgrown because everything was the same, but it is. Giddy and I are real anxious to get on to our next chore, which involves Cubby, our affectionately named Kubota utility vehicle. I don't remember if it's set up for a ball hitch, but if it is, we can quickly put a ball on it and move our fat hens this morning.
For the ball head for Chubby, it's too— oh, it's too small.
Oh, it is? It already has a ball.
Yes. No, it doesn't.
Pinch it from there to this stainless steel wire one marked with a white cord. Right there.
Right there.
Yep, it's not on.
Will it shock me?
Nope. All right, now take this one And put it right here where the electricity is coming in. Okay, hear it clicking? Yeah, it's working. I guarantee you that's hot.
Papa, I know what we can name it.
What?
Mr. Mrs. Sally and Mr. Sally.
Ah, Mr. and Mrs. Sally. What we got to do now for sure, Mr. Brown, is figure out the name for the tractor. It's funny, Mr. Brown has been calling the new Kubota utility vehicle a, uh, He's been calling it Sally, as in that's what those things, all those side-by-sides are called. They're Sallys.
Yeah, they actually are tiny Sallys.
Oh, Johnna, you put us a ball on there. Thank you. Oh, that's cool. It's got a big old hitch. Did you know you put that upside down? Yep. Oh yeah, it shows to do that, doesn't it? Good for you listening. Yeah, it gets it higher off the ground. Cool.
Can I try dumping it?
Sure. Well, we got to get it started. Listen to this. You gotta love the diesel. Oh man, that's a game changer, that movable bed. Look at that, there's toolbox underneath the seats. Yeah, that's cool. We've got our milking supplies. Oh, we need feed for the fat hens. What you doing this morning? Just watering the plants, which are jamming, especially these tomatoes, which I bet you're super happy happy about. I can't look at tomatoes anymore without thinking about pruning them and looking at their, uh— oh, there's one! Love it. There's something satisfying, very satisfying about that. Whoops. I'm thinking fixing this, adding a door latch. Over there and putting it so it locks downward needs to be higher on my priority list. The door came open while we left, and it's hard to catch chickens out in the open. Sent Jonah for the net. They're attracted right back to where their coop was, so let's see if we can't catch them. Oh, you think we can herd them over? We might be able to do that. Oh, you got it! Well, let's herd them to the tall grass, but do not herd them through the, uh, do not herd them through the fence. Herd them around the fence. 3 down, 1 to go. I think we got this. Good job, you got the last one!
I'm gonna stay back here and watch it.
Good call. Well, the door came open again, but this time they're in the right spot. We got them some alfalfa. I'm gonna check Buddy. I've already looked a little bit, but look, it's his— his ball— we banded him, but his ball sack sure isn't shriveling. I made sure the rubber band was still on there. It is. What's going on, buddy? I thought this thing was supposed to be shriveling by now. Check this guy. I think we did him too. No, that's a girl. What else we got? That one's not done. That one's done. His isn't shriveling either. I thought Claire said they would be raisins in 48 hours. I gotta check in on that. So I think it can more take more like 2 weeks. Let's see how Cubby does on the steep bank. No problem at all.
Oh my teddy!
You can hear Josiah string trimming at the log cabin. Jonah's string trimming the front yard. Beauty is weeding. Boy, this is starting to look good. Jonah's gotten this looking so good, getting ready for the big week ahead. Butchering this week, a steer and a lamb, and filming for a TV show, Rooted. It's, it's going to be a big week. Happy birds. I was about to go do a little bit of Kubota work. I'm excited to use that thing, but realize I didn't move these guys yet. Sorry, fellas. Let's do it. Escalito, that's one reason we're harvesting you, buddy. We're gonna replace you with Buddy for Nacho's companion. He doesn't shed real well, so I don't know how healthy he is. He gets diarrhea. 1% change every day, making our farm a little bit better over time. It takes time. You got it looking good, Jonah. In here though, we've harvested our compost. It's getting nasty, so we need fresh wood chips. We've been waiting for this Kubota to make that happen. All right, you want to do that? Okay, you kind of be my director. Well, let's get our forks off and get the bucket on, and let's do it. I don't have to wonder if this thing will start. I can hop on with confidence. Pin fell down into my shoes. It was getting warm. I didn't know it was a pin. I thought— and I just picked up a slug. The slug was on those. I didn't know what the heck. See, I thought a slug got in my shoe or something and it was warm and beat me up in some sort of defense. First time using the bucket. Something very special about changing the chicken's carbonaceous diaper. Looks good too, the contrast, the lighter Wood contrast to the raised bed. Looks good. You guys ready to plant some watermelon? Haroon's planted a bed there. Guys, help me. Let's get two of these beds exposed and plant watermelon every 2 feet. 2 beds of watermelon down. That's 50 plants, nice and wet, ready to go. We also watered Haroon's little garden while we were over here. All right, we've had lunch. I gotta do a little self-care, a little, uh, Lyme disease test. Actually, I guess we're gonna get an update. It's been years since we've done that. We're gonna see if there's any other co-infections going on. I got the sauna going. Infrared. A Land So Strange. Gonna read that for 30— gotta be in the sauna for 30 minutes. Such a good book, good insight on The Native Americans in like 1500, a survival story, shipwreck, surviving in America. Anyway, that's good. I'm good for the next 30 minutes. All right, that's it. I'm a sweaty mess. Been drinking. I'm supposed to pee, but the trick is I have to pee now, but I also have to pee within an hour. Well, it turns out I just had to empty my bladder. Hey, why did I have to empty my bladder? And not take the test.
Okay, so what, what you did by being in the sauna was called provocate—
provocation.
So you're like provoking it to come out into your system, I guess. Yeah, the bacteria.
Okay, and then the second pee, which I have to do 1 hour, not within the hour, so I got to be careful not to go before, but I got to be careful also to go It didn't, it didn't say like how soon after the hour, but it just said wait an hour and then go to the bathroom. All right, well, it's been an hour. There it is. Looks like I need to drink more water. I was scared to drink water though because I didn't— you can't pee before an hour. So now I'm free. Lily's trying to help cook. We are doing duck tacos. I just cooked this slow for 3 hours in our What do you call that, Dutch oven? And then baked it for 20 minutes on 400. Lily, we gotta, um, put oil on that next round, okay? This is super tender after cooking it so long. Duck is so delicious, and I'm just gonna shred it. I had a bowl— that was my bowl. And then we'll put a taco seasoning on it. How is it, guys? Duck is delicious. Boom! Been holding the baby. Get mine ready. This is special. Duck. Once a month.
