Do This Now for a Jammin Garden Later

Victor Justin Rhodes walks through a full day of farm work: moving livestock, broadforking and composting garden beds for fall planting, milking a cow, and cooking smoked turkey with homegrown bacon. The focus is soil prep now for a productive winter garden later.

Are you running this morning? Come on, come on. Where are you going? This way. Let's go do the ducks. Let's go do that. Let's go do that. You guys coming? Oh good, you coming too? Yeah. Kate and Grace, y'all make sure the coop's secure. Let me show you how to do that. Come here. You want to make sure the latches are down. Yeah, so it won't open while we're going. Man, this is teamwork. We're pulling the Shaw. Josiah's putting out the food. Arun's picking up nets. Jonah and Gabby's picking up nets. Mr. Brown, what are you doing? Say, eating oranges? Let me know if the door comes flying open for some reason. Hey guys, did everybody stay in the net like we had hoped? Did we see anybody get out? Okay, that's good because I accidentally let them out right away after switching them over and they all, they all found their home. I am amazed at how good that looks after the cows and the sheep. That almost looks mowed. There's only a few clumps that maybe they left. That's amazing. Between the cows and the sheep, they ate everything in there. All right guys, cows and sheep next, I think. Jonah, don't you just— that's the fourth paddock up there, so we just roll up the cross fence.
Okay, I'm gonna reel up both because there's two You had to use two? I had— there's one here. Okay, next to the sheep, and that's their paddock. And there's one up here. You want me to roll both out?
Yeah, they need to get all the way able to go to the end. Do you want to go and do that and Irene and I go start on the garden, or do you want us all to work together? Would you—
would you— or what do you mean? You take them into the garden and show them how to do the garden and then, uh, come and then come help you?
Sure.
Yeah, do that.
Jonah's got quite the crew there. He'll be fine. Okay, between a wet dog and Gideon spreading dirt, yeah, I'm doomed. All right, get down, just go for it. All right, Arun, we are prepping a fall/winter garden. Arun's asking me if it's gonna rain. You know, that's some clouds. I don't know, it's just, just from that end. I worked on it yesterday. You can see I've shaped these beds nicely yesterday. So what we're going to do now— first, let's broadfork. So I'll get you on broadforking. What is that? Broadforking. So about every 6 inches, put it down, put one foot on it, stand in the— you want to try not to stand on the bed. This aerates, hydrates, and opens it up for roots to dig deep without turning the soil or damaging it. Okay, 6 inches. You want to try it? So why don't you turn the foot? Because the soil's alive with all kinds of crazy life. Millions if not billions. I don't know, I don't, I don't geek out too much on it, but this is a lot better on it if you don't flip it. Definitely not shredding it. You have to put one foot on it. There you go, there you go, you got all the way down. There you go. Maybe go a little further, maybe down to your knees. Yep, keep going, keep going, keep going. That's good, good. All right, around 4 beds. Trying to calculate how long that's going to take you. Uh, I'll, uh, put some fuel on Sally and see where you're at, and maybe, uh, then I'll go help the kids and come back. We'll show you how to do the compost. All right, we've been working up here. We've got— how many got left, Jonah? Just one, probably. It's a big paddock, but we're getting it converted to grass fast.
The next one is way bigger.
Is it?
It was my idea to go this far, and you liked me.
I loved it. Uh, now that it's summer and we're in that lull, grass isn't growing as fast. We have to utilize more because we have to slow down the rotation. We got to give the ground more time to rest and recover. That's a wonderful idea. Are you having a good time with us? Are you having a good time? All right, we got the other net up, we got the sheep's water over here. Let's go get the sheep. Look at the little garden that Pig's planted for us. Some squashes. Look. Getting pollinated right now. So when we come mow. See, this will further help it. Look how much everybody's eating this down. And then we come and we mow in here what they left behind. And that just encourages the grasses because grasses grow back faster than this brambly type stuff. Sheep, Sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep. I see. Who thinks there are sheep? They're excited. Look at him, look at his composition. He's getting plenty of food here, his belly's full. He's eating as soon as he passes over. That's a good thing. Hey, look, there's another volunteer to the pig garden. Let's dump the, uh, manure in here first. Enjoy! Work that in. Turn it into compost. Very good, Arun, very good. Looks good. Let me show you how to— okay, so we're gonna do 2 wheelbarrow loads on one 50-foot bed. These are 30 inches by 50 feet. Unbury our compost. We covered it to keep the rain off of it and keep it from leaching out. Let's start with our spot there that's been exposed. So now, 6 feet apart little piles. This wheelbarrow has to go halfway, so you're just gonna have to guesstimate, you know, get you to fix what, what that's gonna look like. We've got our piles. Doesn't that look nice? So nice. Thank you, Casey, Honey Tree Farm. If you guys haven't seen that YouTube channel, Casey is a friend of mine, pro market gardener, man. Probably one of the most efficient productive farms, gardens in the world. So if you guys are interested in that, being really super efficient, market style, organic style, check out Casey's channel. I'll leave a link in the description. Yeah, so we can— here, I'm thinking maybe for the first bit before we rake, it might be a little easier to do some shoveling. I'm thinking this way, but you can try, see what you like better. Maybe it is easier to rake it. Yeah, because see, make it even. All right, there we go. Super nice, super nice. And you're going to rake it out super smooth around, trying to stay with the— your paths, keep your paths there and shaped nicely, because then we're just going to then wet this down and cover it up and just uncover and plant. All right, thank you, Arun. I'm late to milking. See you in a little bit. All right, who's milking? You guys? Yeah, you milking Gabby? Teddy, you got a bath? Now that's a sight. There comes Flossie. There come all the kids bringing her in with a soccer ball. She's not amused. Oh, what happened? You forget to wash it off yesterday? Just hang on, we'll get you in there in one second. Good work, Jonah. All right, Miss Tang, she's in a rush. She's not used to having to wait. Oh, and she's getting in our asparagus! What happened?
Oh no.
All right, take her that way please, Jonah. That has never happened. She went right through here. Even with this gate shut— I mean open— she's never done that. Mastitis Monday, regular maintenance test. Now we've got a sample of her milk. We drop about 10 drops in there. I'm having a guess because it's coming out so fast. Yeah, and if it's smooth, if it gives— absorbs smooth like it just did instead of It's not got mastitis, but if it would have been more like snot, I think it's like— I'd be in trouble. Jelly. That's weird, but it went right in. She's the trooper, man. On today's episode of Burn It Up Cooking Show, Alice spring turkey. We've taken our leftover smoked turkey. We've put it on a pan. We're gonna learn last time from what we learned last time without spring chicken. We're gonna let that heat up. We're gonna cook bacon separate. Get that warming up. Slicing our homegrown bacon thin, thin as possible. Gotta get the skin off. I'm gonna call it on the bacon. Just let it sit there staying warm. I want to get this warm and almost ready to go. Hey, you guys fogged out on me. Anyway, I touched it, feels like it needs a little bit more heat. Well, the bacon's cooking even though I'm— I've turned it off, so let's fill that.
Very nice.
Yeah, it could use a little bit more. I'm afraid it's drying out. I'm thinking butter to the rescue, or should we do bacon grease to the rescue? All right, timer's about to go off. I'm losing my patience. Let's get it out. It's gonna heat a little bit more. I got a trick. Oh snap, I just grabbed the parchment paper and not the— there we go, there we go. Grab it by the thing. Now let's put our bacon on top. Last time I didn't cook the bacon. Before putting it on top, and it didn't. Everything was ready but the bacon. One more thing— raw cheddar cheese. And now something that Rebecca mentioned I could do is— well, let's clear that off. Let's put it on broil. That's gonna brown it up real nice, I think. Top rack, do a minute at a time. All right, let's try it at 1 minute. A little bit more. Minute number 2. Oh! Boom! I think it's there. There it is, guys. Turkey spring chicken. What do you guys think? Have you already eaten it?
I already had a little piece. Yeah? I'm trying the eggplant though.
How was it?
It's pretty good.
Oh man, we good. We good. The kids are having a good time playing. It's Mineral Monday. We got a little bit before supper. I'm gonna try to do this. Hopefully I have enough time. I lack one mineral in each of the Luchadors, and this Suburban is bright. It's bright. Okay, Luchador and the cows in total. I did not get to the, the ewes at all, but it's supper time. I'm hot and tired. Let's eat.
