Doctor Ordered An X-Ray

Victor Justin Rhodes documents a day on his farm with family and helpers, moving chicken coops and tending turkeys and geese while managing a swollen wrist. A doctor ordered an x-ray after a nurse visit, and he's working through physical therapy with kettlebells and stretching as his hip continues improving.

Good news, bad news, and good news. Good news is my hip is feeling a lot better, getting better every day. Bad news, my wrist is still jacked. Uh, good news, we're doing a lot of self-care today with a UV IV coming at 10, physical therapy at 12, and the kettlebell trainer at 3. I won't be doing any kettlebells, but I might be doing some stretches. Sea monsters are coming today or tomorrow. We've got to get the turkeys and the geese out. We've just got to make do. So I wanted to do the chicken tractor, but the A-frame is in one piece. Chicken tractor's broken right now. I don't think I'm gonna mess with it. Jonah has gotten this over here. Thank you, Jonah. You've gotten our pig fence for them. Yep, you've gotten water. This is the worst pasture to put them in because it's the best pasture on our farm. We've ran the birds the most here. We've had cows, sheep the most here. I would like to put them up there, but we don't have a guard. We're missing a guard goose, remember? We lost that guard goose, and I have some limitations. So, all right, can you pull that?
Maybe.
You pulled it with that string this far. The problem is now we've gotten this hump. Well, I'm glad we didn't— I'm glad I didn't sell this thing. You know, I kind of like this because it's a little bit bigger— well, it's a lot bigger than the chicken tractor. So because we're blending, we're gonna have to blend the turkeys and the geese. Yeah, that wasn't the plan. But we're just gonna have to. Here comes a muscle with Azariah and Arun. They'll pull this— they'll pull this chicken coop into this area. It's kind of weird just sitting here, just moving it inch by inch, and then somebody showed up.
Okay, that's good.
Let's put it in one corner. Hey guys, we got to put Jonah's end facing the sun, so maybe if you can back this in right here to this corner, and it can start in this corner. The reason I'm saying corner is because we'll move it every few days. Jonah, can you help him?
Yeah.
Poor guy. If something happens to Arun, we're all—
we're all—
we're just calling. We're not gonna let the geese and the turkeys out yet, guys. They're just gonna— we're gonna use this as a tractor, and they're gonna just stay in there until they're a bit older and can thin off the crows. This is just that protection. We spotted um, what do you call it, coyotes. Oh yes, right up there. Did you hear the yesterday? We've been hearing them. They were just in the morning right there, but Grandma and Big Daddy heard them. So we checked all our fences last night. We got to make sure all our fences stay hot. They'll be double protected here. They'll have this pig fence, but then they'll have the, the protection from the A-frame. Jonah, help Arun get— scoot this on up. This bottomless coop is, is ideal for Let's get the— just the turkeys and the geese out, but not like get them out in the open yet. We'll get them out on the grass, some sunshine, uh, until they're ready for the turkey shaw. You come to help, Mr. Henry, or to supervise? Oh wow, they're huge! Everybody's huge! Oh, look at the geese! Where's the third? Oh, there. Okay, good. I thought we were missing a goose.
Oh, they're adorable!
All right, let's get them. Put the opening right there.
And then you just herd them right into it.
You sure?
Yeah, especially with the shavings this high. Unless they fly, that might be the problem.
The sea monsters walked right in there. Sea monsters walk right in?
Yeah, they're trying to get away from me. Kind of works.
Look, look how fun!
Look at my pretty flowers I grew.
Where'd you get those?
Um, in front of the greenhouse, the little greenhouse.
Oh nice.
And then I got these too.
That's what you did it for right there.
Yep, so I can cut me some flowers.
Getting the second batch, the second crate now. You're gonna carry it out? You want to carry it? Just right there. We're gonna put them inside inside the A-frame and leave them. They're going to stay inside probably at least a week.
I don't think they're susceptible to crows, but maybe hawks, so we'll wait a little bit.
So now let's get them 2 trays of duck feed and 2 trays of turkey feed. That's the only thing I know to do, and I don't think one will hurt the other, and they'll be able to choose and pick what they want. Mom, your greenhouse though—
what about it?
This is great. Flowers around it. Yeah, you've really created a nice place for yourself. I did. Josiah must have been feeding chick starter to the turkeys. Obviously not the end of the world. They're all here because that brand new 1,000-pound tote hadn't been open. He had to have feed chick starter because he would have long ran out of our one bag of turkey starter. What was the difference between this? Looks good. Yeah, it looks the same. The turkey is higher in protein. They need more protein. We could fill that bucket up, Arun, and put a lid on it and leave it out. Gideon, will you take that feed out to the turkeys?
My feet are dirty. We put the water in the back of the room.
That's okay, your feet are barefoot. Okay, go ahead, buddy.
Of course they're dirty. Oh, I'm gonna put this in the back.
Wait, can they— can that haul that? Hold up. That's what I'm talking about. That can be the turkey feed. Yeah. And then how about two red trays for the geese? It's times like this that you, you give up on the ideal and do what you can. You must get chickens out of the brooder. They must get sunshine, green grass. Is it the end of the world if they're on our best pasture making it better than, than if they were up there? No. So we just make it happen. Would it have been better maybe to use our chicken tractor, a little more manageable in the long run? Probably. But let's say we're gonna do what we can, you know. Was it best that they ate, uh, lower protein chick starter feed for a while? No, no, it wasn't best. Is it the end of the world? No. They got food, they got water. That's, that's the super important stuff. The good thing about turkeys and geese is they don't scratch, so it's not going to get the water and their feed too jacked up being cooped up like this. You know, John, I'm looking at them. They could probably be let out at this age and not bust through this fence.
Yeah, but then I have to put them up every night.
Yeah, that's true. So why don't we let them be cooped in here for maybe a day, at least a day?
Yeah.
And then we'll let them out. Yeah, sure, you'll have to herd them back in. They don't go back in like chickens, do they? Okay, they're getting the morning sunshine over there. Love it, they like it. What is that board there? The guys, they're standing on— I'm not sure you guys want to be caught behind me. I'm a little bit slow. There, they passed me. Okay, we got a little bit of time before milking.
Why are we here?
Just to—
why are we here? We're gonna, uh, hang these cucumbers. We're gonna trellis these cucumbers. So we'll go to the cucumber like this, so then we pull tight on this, and then you do— yeah, and then go kind of right. You pulled that up pretty high, and then pinch it, and now you let it grow some more. And then we'll pin it up here. We got them hung. Some of these are getting pretty tall. Look, Gideon, is this one as tall as you? Almost. Almost. Let's go get our milking supplies. I gotta take my meds, my herbs. I've had a surgery right there, milked for 6 weeks with my left hand. I cut my arm, cut my hand right there, milked another 6 weeks. All right, let's grab her with our left hand. I'm going to try something different today because normally what I do when I come in from chores, one of the first things I do is answer premium Abundance Plus member texts. So I thought Today I need to show you guys just how different Abundance Plus is. This isn't like anything that's already out there. So I'm going to take these texts I can't really type out and I'm going to make videos for these people. Because I think I can do that all with the left hand, all on my phone. And I'll send them video links. That might could be something I end up putting in Abundance Plus in its own section, like an Ask Justin kind of thing. Like knock two birds out with one stone. We'll see how it goes. She's got her, a lightning bug farm it looks like. Why don't I let you guys in on that? We'll ask the question. I'll just give you guys, I'll just give you guys here on the blog clips of those videos. And if you want more of that kind of stuff, of course you can sign up for Abundance Plus. If you actually want to text me, you can sign up for Abundance Plus Premium. The question is how, what cuts to get at the butcher for your beef? That's a really good question, and honestly, I'm no expert in it. But at first, you go in there and say, hey, this is, this is the first time I'm doing this. Can you guide me through the different cut choices? Now, I have given you a really nice beef cut sheet that breaks down the different possibilities. Like, they're probably going to want to know thickness of steak, and I'm going to, I'm going to include this link, uh, to you. And they're going to include a number of steaks per packages. How much ground beef do you want per package? For us, we put 4 or 5 pounds of ground beef in there if we want, because that's how much we would eat at a time. But this, this, this one particular choice is 1 pound, 1.5, or 2 pounds. And it goes down the various things, and if they're kind enough, they should be able to walk you through that and, and guide you through that and And if there was anything on here, like a roast here you didn't want, like if you didn't want the arm roast, well, you could, you could get that into ground beef. But there will be ground beef without you having to sacrifice any roast or anything like that. But if you want more ground beef, then you could go for it that way. So hopefully this helps. Hopefully it helps just enough. Don't be afraid to just go in there and say, hey, This is my first time. Can you kind of walk me through understanding the various cuts? This sheet does good because it talks about, well, if you get more of this, you're taking away from other possible cuts. So that's a good all-around place to start.
Also, fat.
Oh, that's a good point.
Fat, you need to ask for it back?
They don't— I doubt they automatically give that to you.
Offal. If you, if you take it in, if you've dressed it yourself on farm, you need to take your offal into them. Like, we have taken liver and heart in before and had them ground that into the ground beef. So those are other options that you can do. But, um, offal, like asking for the tongue—
well, that was the video. I'm now uploading it to Vimeo. I can do that from my phone, thank goodness. Uh, it's taken a minute, so I think I'll film some more and come back to it. Laura, you want to know about the guard goose? You want to get one for your posse? This is great, but you have the basic questions. No problem. Breed of guard goose? I have Roman Tufted because I like them because they're smaller, don't eat as much. But I know times are, are that they are now You may have to be less selective. There's also the African goose. There's also the Chinese goose. These are all possible guard geese. Should I get male or female? If you get female, they will give you some eggs in the spring.
Yay!
Oh no. They, they go broody and pull all the nesting material out. So we've kind of, we were excited about the goose eggs, didn't really get enough to make it worth it. We're gonna go with male from now on. Doesn't matter, they will both guard. All right, we got it on there. We got a Vimeo link. Man, that's gonna— they're gonna be like, whoa, you blew my mind, you answered me with a video. A problem— a good thing is coming out of this problem. That's like turning a problem into a solution. 10 o'clock IV time. Can we do it right here, Danielle? Absolutely we can. Okay.
Um, we might need a hanger to hang the IV bag on because we don't have a pole.
Okay.
All right. Jonah, will you go grab us a hanger please? Thank you, my man. Well, that was anticlimactic because apparently I'm dehydrated. It was, it was too, it's gonna be too difficult to get a vein, so, which is not abnormal for you.
You don't have the best veins.
No, but I'm drank up today, so I just I just gotta go extra, I guess. You know, sweating at night and then sauna. So we're gonna try again tomorrow. So my homework is to drink even more water. I've already drank a half a gallon of water today. Now, while she was here, she's a nurse, and she was like, and we started looking at our wrist, and my wrist, it is swollen. Like, you can't see that knot there in my Yeah, and it is warmer, and so it's—
well, it's— you can see it's swelling up to here.
She suggested we get the doctor to order an x-ray, so I called the doctor and she is ordering an x-ray. It feels like a perfect— I can't imagine how anything like that would have happened. We just went into town to the physical therapy. He worked out some things. Yeah, he did some dry needling on my lower back muscles.
We're trying to figure out— I walked and stuff like that.
He told me to get up and walk, and I did. And I walked good. Now to the rest. We are gonna go get an X-ray.
What we think has happened is this bacteria has caused reactive— your, your symptoms to flare up. I was reading about reactive arthritis online. A lot of it is what Justin, some of Justin's symptoms, or what he experiences on a daily basis anyways. And so I honestly wonder if he's had reactive arthritis from the beginning, from after Lyme disease, from, from the Lyme.
We're at the hospital now. It's a good thing this thing has 1, 2, 3, 4 seats in it with Henry's stuff. He fell asleep while waiting.
He did.
Bless his little heart. Well, this one's not stat, so we won't know anything till tomorrow. Okay, we are back. We got Cooking with Arun Kumar in the house. Indian Wednesday. The baby chicks are coming today, so it's a good thing we got everybody out because we got them out today. Chicks are coming in. That was really neat to upload videos for members today, but while at the hospital I was able to start texting a little bit, so things are looking on the up in that department. Our kettlebell trainer's here. I haven't done this, I want to say, in a week. Of course, I'm not going to do the kettlebell training, but he might get me on some original strength stretches. Good afternoon, Jacob. How's it going? You ready? You ready for this? You look great. I don't think I've been here in a week. You haven't? You tried a couple times. I did. He looks over there like I laid down over there. You laid over your belly. It was a violent effort. Okay, well, put her to work. I'll, I'll cheer. Maybe you have some stretches for me. See how far Becca's come.
Yeah, and then I'm coming up with it.
Yeah, nice warm-up squat. Uh-oh, you under pressure, Beck?
That's right.
All right, now drive up with the bell and then push the floor away. Not bad. You feel how your hips are lifting a little bit? Go ahead and relax. Maybe I can do a squat. So my hips would not have let me do this a few days ago. Uh, just like last time, I'm gonna walk through it and then we will start off with. Yeah. Wow, now he's showing off doing the get up with phone. All right, to hand, sweep the leg. All right, step around. Then truth be told, I just didn't want my shoe on my hand. They're jumping right into the get up. She's got to go down, huh? Yeah. Oh yeah. All right, so eyes and heel to elbow. Good. Extend that arm up. Proud chest. Curl the heel. All right, sweep the leg. Oh, oh, you're on two different mats. That's what the issue is. Yeah, the mat's what got you there. All right, yeah, readjust that foot.
What am I supposed to be doing?
It's right there. Bring the foot back there. Very good.
Yeah.
All right, now up tall. Step around. Stand up.
What?
Nice. All right, good job. Step around. Water slide. She's passed me up, guys. All right, I couldn't do it this fast. Straighten it out, elbow, and back. Nice, good job! Kids and Will are back. They guessed they picked up our chickens.
That's what we got, chicks.
Floaties too.
Oh, you got some floaties for our creek. Okay, Jonah's dipping the beaks. Just got a text. Luke L, because of this community, I connected to someone out in my area, and I'm helping her out with her garden. And she had a bunch of biochar just sitting for years, so I spread that today. That's what's happening. That's what's happening in the Abundance Plus community. If you guys want a chance to be able to text us in a pinch or text us beautiful things like that, Abundance Plus Premium is available until July 4th at midnight. Now's the time to get in, 10% off. Do check that out. And maybe you'll get a video reply because that's easier and better quality for you guys. How was the meal? So good. Arun knocked it out of the park. Perfect. Who's got you? Look at those lips. Everybody liked it. Good job, Arun.
