Ducks | The Other (Faster) Meat Bird. Only 51 Days to Harvest.

In this farm vlog, Victor Justin Rhodes walks viewers through a day of homestead tasks, starting with "Mineral Monday" where he refills mineral feeders for livestock and checks a French drain to prevent water pooling. He highlights the rapid growth cycle of meat chickens, noting a 58‑day harvest window, and demonstrates winter gardening techniques using hoop tunnels and inexpensive Agribon frost covers to extend the growing season. Rhodes shares free resources via growinggroceriesquickstart.com, including guides on raising chickens in 58 days and a Joel Salatin clip emphasizing that experience outweighs Googling. The video then shifts to duck production, showcasing ducks ready for harvest at seven weeks, and includes a light‑hearted cooking segment where he makes a "carnivore salad" with bacon, chicken, and ham. Family members appear throughout, providing updates on baby development (14‑week gestation milestones) and helping with farm chores like netting, high‑tunnel construction, and storm‑door planning. The vlog blends practical farm advice, personal family moments, and promotional links for viewers seeking to replicate the fast‑track meat bird and winter garden methods.

Well, yesterday was Mineral Monday. Gotta get the minerals to the animals. Got the mineral sticks for the luchadors, but didn't get anybody any minerals. We got a mineral shipment. You're gonna move that? Good job, buddy. Good job. Is our drain working?
Yeah, this is like the best thing they've ever done to our yard.
It's got some water in it.
Yep, I hope it goes all the way down.
Yeah, we won't have that pooling water here anymore, and we've got a flat garden in our front yard.
The chicks are having a party!
Oh my word, they're getting so active. I think they just jump up and out. Oh, that water's nasty and they're drinking it. I'll clean this bucket. But I don't see a strainer, guys.
I know where the French—
I know. Can you show me? Is that it by the, the cow stanchion? Can you go look there? We can't just throw dirt down into here. This is gravel and it's got a drain down in there to our pipes. I guess it's a French drain, uh, but if that gets clogged up, nothing will get through. That's why we have this and we go through strainer if we can find it. If I were a chidler and ran off with my strainer, where would I put it? That's where I'd put some of our good bowls. This is where I'd put my bike. That's where I put my helmet. What'd you got? You found it? Where'd you find it?
Over there at the rock, at the big rock.
Okay, thank you. At least he's getting to be the age where he remembers what he did with his stuff. So that's actually the latest we've ever done. Meat chickens, but they grow so fast, guys. Did you know from day 1 to harvest is only 58 days? So 2 months. They're like a quick fix in the spring, in the summer, hey, even in the fall. A lot of people are tucking in their garden, a lot of people are tucking in their farm. You don't have to. It's not too late to fill in any gaps, uh, make up for any failures early on in the year. It's not too late. Wait, are you throwing peppers?
Kid snack, come get it, just not because it'll bruise.
Okay, well, you better catch it. I'd hate to see that beautiful pepper fall.
Ready?
Oh, good catch! And you might not be able to grow peppers per se because they take so long, and a lot of us are fighting, uh, daylight. You gotta have 10 or more hours of daylight to grow, and if it's frosty or snowy you gotta have coverage, but you don't have that much coverage. The garden is another quick-growing place. Kale— those are bug nets right there, guys. That's not adequate frost protection. But look what I'm gonna do, and let me show you guys, I'm gonna show you guys how to do this. I've got a free guide for you in the description. But look, it's going to be a hoop that goes up and over If you've been with the channel a while, you've seen me do it. And then it's a very inexpensive, what you call Agribon frost cover. And if you have snow, you would get a green cover. But as you get these up to maturity, before you start having 10 hours or less daylight, theoretically you just keep it covered. You can harvest it all winter long. While other people were rushing to the store to get their French toast milk, eggs, and bread, we're rushing to cover our greens. Yes, this was a good bet. This was a good bet. These bigger ones up— these bigger ones up here. These low tunnels, some parts of them are crushed, but they're certainly not defeated. So that's my winter garden, really. Once you get through this fall bug pressure. You don't have much weeds, you don't have any bugs in the winter. Um, winter gardening can be— I think it's the hidden— I think it's a hidden jewel of gardening. So I just finished a white paper on winter gardening, and it's amazing. It's got links to the all the tools and stuff we use, step-by-step guide. I'm giving you that. I'm giving you How to Raise Chickens in 58 Days. I'm giving you Joel Salatin's You Can Farm speech when he was here.
You can farm. So where do you get going? Well, I guess the most important thing I can say is that you can't Google experience. So starting is more important than starting well. I alluded to this down at the milking station where So often we feel like if we can't see the end, then we can't start. But when we start to this farm thing, we don't always have a roadmap. We don't, we don't have a GPS.
What else am I giving you guys? Those are 3 things. I'm giving you 2 other things. I'm giving you my designer, my permaculture design lesson. Something else. Why can't I remember that? I guess it's a mystery. You got to go check it out. Link down in the description. And if you guys don't have a description because you're watching on a TV or something, um, let's do— let's do growinggroceriesquickstart.com. Growinggroceriesquickstart.com. And, uh, you can sign up for the free stuff. Look at these guys, how they give them their pepper. You guys see how big these ducks are, guys? And we're harvesting them at 7 weeks. Are you guys just all puffed? Okay, you are a lot of puffs. Okay, you're a lot more puffed than the sea monster. They're not quite as big as they look. I don't know, I'm very excited for this harvest, guys. I had duck, uh, 4 or 5 years ago, like 5 years ago, in a restaurant for the first time, and I was like, ever since then, we've got to grow duck. Here we are, dream is coming true. Hey, get in! In, not on. Look at the sight— cows, sheep, chickens. Nice. Mineral Monday, better do it Tuesday as opposed to no days. So better late than never. What happened? Hey, did you guys get a little excited about the salt? You got a little excited about the salt, or you got a little excited about rubbing on this? Why is my water not working? Are we on? Why are we not on? I don't know why you turn that off. The automatic water isn't downhill, and so this was probably overflowing, hence why it's muddy. The luchadors, I fixed their mineral feeder yesterday but did not have time to fill it up. So far, our little guardrail is working. Hey guys, I'm not gonna hurt you. I'm not gonna hurt you. One of our mineral feeders, which is a double, it holds two, was missing, and so I'm gonna have to take pictures of everything to figure out which minerals it was. Okay guys, okay, I'm coming through, coming through. Gosh, you're so antsy. So hopefully they'll calm down some when we put them with the ladies, and then if not then, hopefully over the winter when we deep bed them. We can handle you guys. We got our BVC replacement, our VN, and then SC. Yeah, let's, let's So let's fill those buckets up and let's get the buckets we need. All right, I filled out— I figured out the 2 blank minerals. Now for my white marker to mark them, and it's not anywhere to be seen. There it is! Who put it over here? Oh, that's the lid. Oh, oh, why would you guys do that to me? Even if we find it, it's probably dried out. Look, the lid right there. There he is.
I would consider this helping me.
I'll put— how about this? If you go help Papa, I'll fold the towels. Whoa, she's gonna fold your towels? You might wait and see if he actually does help me. Yes. Okay, according to my camera, that's all we need right there, guys. All right, Jonah never found our white marker. I'm gonna take a black one and write on the wood. Arun's opening my gate for me. I want to show you something that goes— you can see it right here, guys. Cows, put cows in sheep net, followed by the sheep, then the chickens. So basically one net, three species have come through here. And we've been leaving troughs, and look, she's got her a bath. Are you happy? Are you happy? That makes me happy. We're, uh, gonna start weaning her. So this week we milk her as usual, but we get her half the alfalfa ration. We're drying her off. She's, what, 2 months away from having a calf? She's drying off. I mean, in her height, she's given 2 gallons. She just, you know, goes up and then slowly, gradually declines. Phyllis's baby, Holly. He's getting quite handled, aren't you? Are you getting handled? Are you getting handled where you don't mind? Where you don't mind this too much? Yeah, you don't mind it. You don't mind it. Yay! You get to go out and see Mama. Here, can you come give her some pressure?
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah.
There you go.
Good girl.
How'd you like your half ration? Not too much, huh? You don't like that too much? Okay, come on, let's go, let's go. We're drying you off. Next up, new mama.
Big mama!
How you feeling, Becky? How's my baby's mama?
I'm good, just warming up a little bit. It's cold in the house.
You got up today, you combed your hair.
I did.
And got dressed.
Well, in my sweatpants.
Into sweatpants.
Yep, I did all that. I had some things to do. I had a checklist and I've done half of the checklist.
Wow. Randolph just got here. Look at you, milk all that by yourself. I just go switch it. That's good, we'll use that as the reservoir. On today's episode of Burn It Up Cooking Show, I'm making a carnivore salad. Look at that face again. And you're making a pound cake. Yep, just keep your plants away from my beef, all right? Or from my pork. Okay, you stay over there. You got your, uh, palm shortening, your eggs, your butter. What is a carnivore salad? Yeah, I know, and I guess I don't know either. I'm making it up. So chunks of bacon, chunks of chicken, chunks of ham. What's your— I wish I could see your face. Yeah, let's see it.
Like, okay, like, I don't know.
All right, Lily, bring me the ham. Turn it down. Did I just say that? Turn it down. Whoops. Look at that meat salad. That looks delicious to me, Becky. Thank you very much. Let's try it. Look at this. That's good. How's the pancake going?
It's actually turned out really well. This is my first time doing this recipe.
Yeah.
But I mean, I've done a lot of their other recipes and they've turned out—
Who's their?
It's Otto's. It's this, uh, cassava flour people. Yummy! On their website they have a bunch of recipes. Yeah, for using their products.
Yeah, that's not—
and I have, I have, um, had good success with other recipes, so I thought, well, we'll just give this one a whirl.
Okay.
And, um, I'm actually really excited.
All right, good. I'm gonna put my carnivore salad on a bed of eggs. Lily is having a little, uh, tiny birthday party. Her birthday party's September 11th. But she's gonna have a celebration with her friend Penelope, who also has got a birthday. Is it today?
Yeah.
You want some carnivore salad?
I already got some.
Oh, you like that? And a glass of milk. Cheers. Okay, it's 12:30 and we finally figured out— stay with me, guys. It's 12:30. We finally figured out something she could eat. Cheese quesadilla. Meanwhile, Jonah's been putting something together. This should help my back. Let's get some light in here too, bro. Oh, an inversion table! Does it work? You put it together? Yes. Does that feel good? Yeah, it works. Can you bring yourself back up? Nice. You can do this too. Okay, so this is a Swedish inversion table. It's good for your back. It's good to stretch the back. You hang upside down, essentially. Almost upside down. You're welcome. You look very nice. Do not lose the cake.
No, I gotta— I'm gonna have to hold it.
Oh look, he's Look at this, all you ladies looking so nice and spring-like.
We're trying.
Are you happy in your dresses? Randolph's back and he's working on the high tunnel. Let's check in, guys, while we're walking over here. Arun's garden, notice anything different? It's been leveled. We got boulders from the little nook up there. Isn't this beautiful? It's flat. More on that huge excavation project. More on that. We shot a whole video about it. I see you down here thinking.
Oh yeah, I'm thinking.
Uh-oh, did you get in trouble? Ain't got no trouble yet. Okay, good. Did you want 8-foot doors or 10-foot doors on the big grill. It lets me do either, either one. Yeah, 10-foot. I'm gonna go 10 on both of them. Yeah, is that trouble? No. Okay, so right here will be your— I got it for 8, but I'm just— well, if this is okay, I'm thinking 10 down there because, yeah, that's the side we'll get materials from. Okay, in and out there. Here, this drain field somewhere Yeah, okay, so we have to get materials from the other side. And you want one storm door, I figured, right here. Yeah, that'll work. Yeah, because this is the side we'll always come in and out of. Yeah, to come service it. Yeah, good deal. All right, this afternoon we need a string trim for our net, and let's put the cows in here. Look at how well this has grown up. I think they're gonna like it. All right, we got that fence up. Just getting these guys through. So we gotta go get a water wherever the chickens were. Scabbers, come on. One way to know then they've had enough, they're in no hurry to move. They're not grazing, they're just standing there, just happy. They can just feel to get filled up in a few hours and be done. That's one thing I like about cows in nets. This little girl could never go off and hide.
Where you going?
Where do you want me to go?
There's a run right there.
Oh, why does it double up like that?
Because of the 50-footer.
Sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep! Put some ice in that, get an ice bath. Been feeling tired today. Nothing like an ice bath to get give you some energy first. I think I'm gonna surprise the kids. They're taking a break to the swimming hole. I'm just checking on everybody.
Higher and higher and higher.
1, 2.
Hey, y'all watch him.
Oh look, there he is. So how was the party?
It's so fun.
How was the cake?
Good.
You starting to show?
Yeah, just a little bit.
Yeah, a wee little bit. You're 14 weeks old today.
No, 14 weeks.
You should get your phone. We should look and see what the baby looks like.
Come.
How big's the baby? Size of a lemon. That's a small lemon.
It's a very small lemon.
Depends on what size of lemon.
I guess it doesn't say. Jonah's looking for a bigger lemon.
What?
But a very small one. So what's the size of this?
What's happening on week 14 that's of note?
This is 13.
13.
Um, Papa, where's your phone?
Baby's bones in his or her hands and feet are also starting to grow.
So it's a piece of— so everything's there, it's just starting to grow now.
Now that baby can move his or her arms and legs. Some babies begin thumb sucking as early as 13 18 weeks on the womb. While baby won't be doing any vocal scales anytime soon, his or her vocal cords are formed. So the baby looks like—
can I explore it?
What app is that? The bump app.
That's the bump app.
