Exposing the Truth

Speaker A and family debunk daylight-saving myths, work on a new deck while battling wind and power lines, and plan spring crops including potatoes, lettuce, and tomatoes. An internet outage from a downed tree interrupted their day, and they highlight fellow YouTubers and film-fest finalists from their farming community.

Hey, we coming? Time change kicking your butt? Time change is kicking our butt. La la la, let me be free. It's now getting lighter an hour later. They say time change happened because of farmers. That's a myth. These peaches bloomed when it was like 70 the other day. Now it's 25 degrees in the morning. I mean, farmers revolve their day around the clock, about like these steers do. What time is it? 30, 45 minutes after daylight. How you doing, He-Man? The new Stud Muffin is He-Man. I mean, they could care less what time it is. They operate by the sunshine, much like farmers. No, not much like farmers. It's because they operate with the sunshine. So do farmers. We are farmers.
Hey, buenos días, José.
Buenos días. Hey, you want me to bring the boards down with the machine? Yeah. Where did this crazy time change come from? It came from lobbyists in the golf industry who wanted one more hour of daylight during the summer. Then the candy industry got involved. They wanted it to last until Halloween, which happens to be the second largest holiday next to Christmas commercially. I forget if they wanted it to be dark at Halloween to sell more candy or light, but it had something to do with, with it too. You have to ask Mr. Google Pants. The crew is back working on our homestead house. Getting a deck today. Gotta show you guys this. This ramp-in was all the way over here. We've been having such crazy winds the last couple days, which is rare here in western North Carolina. It pushed that. It's heavy. Thankfully it crashed into Lily's horse ring. Was that a wild ride or what, guys? See, their manure is looking great. You want it pebbly like that. Nacho Nuevo, ¿cómo está? Our new ram is doing great. After, before. That's what we're going at today. Try not to let it get too intimidating. I'd like to get it done this week. Just tell myself one fuel tank at a time. I had to come back for safety glasses. You want to come?
Bring your little excavator.
You got a place to dig up here? Yeah. Look at this. It's a better perspective. What we've done. What we need to do. Wow, he's gotten up in there in the brush. Uh, that was the third time the wind blew over this camera in two days. Pleasantly surprised how much work we can get done. One tank of chainsaw fuel and two construction pieces of equipment. I'm very proud of these boys. Look how proficient they are getting with these machines. Did you see the hole they boys put through the ceiling? Oh, I see it now. Uh-oh, uh-oh. Nobody fell through, right? No, they didn't fall through. Just a look. What do you think? It's not that bad. I mean, better they did it now than when we had tile. Yeah. Younger one? Josiah. He's 14. Oh, okay. Yeah. And we rallied the troops and got it picked up in here, so they think you Thank you for making everybody lunch. What do you have there?
There it is.
Mom, what's up with your seed order here?
I got some tomatoes in there.
Lettuce.
Lettuces.
Carrots.
I already sent the broccoli and the bunching onions to get.
Snap peas.
The bunching onions should be coming this week. Or not the bunching onions, the onion sets.
All right.
We got the potatoes planted. I need to start the cabbage soon.
The internet's still out. We found out it's now up to the power company as a tree is on the power line to the internet radio way up there shooting down the internet to us. Looks like you might not be able to do a footer, huh? What kind of footer? Did we talk to you about it? They need a footer 8 feet off of that, and then they need one right here too. Annie, it's time! Becky's going We got some seeds. It's time! Do you mind helping me dig a couple of holes? D-I-G. What's that spell?
Dig!
Yeah, I can do that. I thought I was gonna go get on the internet. I got a 1:30 call. I'm gonna get a little work done before the call. Randolph's coming with a tape. This is a good look. I was doing the digging and he's doing this. Hole diggers, and you come by when I'm taking— when it's her turn.
Well, I was like wondering, I was like, I was like, is that your father down there? And Lily's like, no, he's not down there, just standing there watching Annie work.
We had to get some footers dug real quick so they can build this deck, deck connecting the porch to the front door. I can't imagine what it would be to— there's one here that I think must be powering something in the septic. Does the septic tank need power?
I really hope that that's not the power to the well.
Oh my gosh, we hit a line. Rebecca had a thought it might be the line to the well. Shoot. This is the only way I know how to test the well. See if we run out of water. Take a leak. I'm back. Hasn't seemed to slow. Definitely want to take care of that before we, uh, fill that concrete full of— pull that hole full of concrete. Doesn't appear to have affected it. I mean, I left it on for 2 minutes. There's a rumor we might be having internet again. Annie said she heard her phone. Doesn't look like it. I'm about to introduce you guys to a bunch of YouTubers. These are guys who submitted videos to the film fest and are finalists. This is going to be a bonus of sorts for those guys who submitted films. I don't know, a bit of a mastermind. We can bounce ideas and talk about our struggles together and give each other ideas. Got another idea, a little treat unbeknownst to them. How about when we introduce ourselves, I cue you guys in, and you guys can meet some Maybe some familiar YouTubers, but also some unfamiliar ones. You might find some new friends.
I'm Mikayla from Calico Cow Acres.
Hi, I'm Tim Reed from Reedwood Creek Farms. This is Lauren. I'm Jake, and I'm a big fan of the Justin Rhodes channel. I'm White House on the Hill. I'm Cody. My wife and I, Michelle, have YouTube channel More Than Farmers. Happy to be here. Hey, I'm the disembodied spirit of Morgan Gould from Gould Shaw Farm. The headset. Early adapter. Okay. Tyler Lloyd. My YouTube channel is Tyler Lloyd. Easy enough. Okay. What an excellent group of filmmakers. I can't wait. I've curated them. They're all— we're all coming together in one place. You can watch their videos plus many others. That's at the film fest end of this month. Look at this. These two playing soccer. Stark contrast from 25 degrees this morning. And what are y'all up to?
We're riding!
Like my jockey length?
Ah, they're so short.
Okay, you about to sprint? Sure. Wow, wow! Footers just came just in time. Let's see the back deck. We could have been watching them play soccer. No, riding the horses.
I could have been sitting— I could have been in the kitchen cooking.
That's one way. And do we have internet? Oh, we have internet! Welcome back to the '20s. It was nice to unplug though.
It was, it wasn't terrible.
Did we learn anything? Are we gonna live more unplugged?
Yeah, I had all sorts of plans for today.
Just set a time.
We'll just set a time.
But I need to do stuff for the remodel.
I need to buy things.
And get on the internet or on the computer.
I gotta, I gotta buy mattresses, washer and dryers.
One thing we're getting with the internet is my test results. The question is, did we heal my gut?
Not all the way healed.
Really?
Did we make progress?
Yes, like this one was— it was 2.31 and now it's 0.73.
Here's the overall: 4.2, 2.9, 2.9. Yeah, so I went from the red to the yellow. That is a happy day.
