Two farm members harvest potatoes, beans, pumpkins, and corn while racing the kids Lily and Gideon through their fall garden. They tackle fencing, storage, and deploy a silage tarp to protect the beds, then store pumpkins and butternut squash in their new root cellar for winter.

And just like that, it's another happy day. My hat is dried-ish. Smells a little bit, but maybe it'll dry out more on my head. And the locust tree thrived despite the little steers. The question is, are they going to be able to survive the sheep and the big steers? I think it will. I think our cattle panel fencing is going to work. As for our wood pile, I'll be honest, I would have hoped they would have eaten it up a little bit more. It's, it's too big of a paddock. There's too many other low-hanging fruits. I really wanted them to do this. I would make the fence tighter around it. The animals have done a lot, and we can at least see the wood in there now and get to it with the machines. Yesterday we had our problem going through the mud and valley there. Now we're kind of on the hill. It's as far as we could pull. I'm hoping Sally can get it up off this knoll. Into the new paddock. Now before we go to the garden and the animals, look what this one has done. Did I clean it out nicely for you? You did.
You did clean it out.
I still— I see, I see we still have a bird's nest in there.
It's been there for forever. I think that's why we keep it. I'm getting one more of those bins. And then I'm gonna put cups in it.
Look at you, Miss Organized.
And then this will be out of here.
And then this is always ready to go.
And then I can come in here and say, oh, we need forks. Oh, we need— I need to buy spoons. Oh, I need to buy plates. Oh, I need to buy bowls. Like, I do need to buy bowls. I'm gonna— this is, this is just a paper towel in there, but I'm gonna put bowls in that one. Yeah. And then we have bowls in the bottom, and those are small plates, and then big plates.
This is our Investment in the local community.
Yeah.
And this is gonna make it easier.
And I swept out the people barn too.
Yeah, look at this investment. Might as well put it to use, right?
What do you think? How do you think that we could clear the dust out of here? You're the boss. It's just so dusty. I feel like I'm always just— do you think an air purifier would help that?
Probably blowing, because it's outside. You're gonna be always fighting the dust.
I know. I feel like we vacuumed in here, we have swept, and it just continues to remain so dirty.
Do I help you? Yes, we've cleaned up the potatoes. They look great. We've cleaned up the beans. Guys, we need to harvest all these pumpkins and pull up all these vines, pull up all this Brussels sprouts, pull up all this squash, and pull up your old corn. You coming? You excited? You're excited. Are you excited? Come on, Lily, let's just focus on one row. This row of pumpkin. Put all the pumpkins over here. 2 rows cleared in maybe just 20 minutes.
Are the tomatoes ripe?
Potatoes?
Potatoes.
I mean, there's some, but don't get them yet. They're just finger potatoes right now. Okay, let's let them get bigger. Let's maybe till frost. Look at all these pumpkins.
Oh, you have to kiss the cabbage.
Oh, okay, give me a cabbage to kiss. And we got cabbages. Kiss the cabbage. I could see why a lot of people put the garden I would have quit gardening by this time of the year. It's early September, it's hot, but we must do this because look, every single one of these weeds that ends up going to seed, which is very close, it's going to be 7 years of these weeds. Let's do these next 2 rows, pull up the old cabbages. We've got a pile going right here. We've got the idea to get the, the track loader over here and put it in the pigs all at once. Oh, that's good, that's good. Then I'll start working on this row. You want to have a race? You do this row, I'll do this row. 1, 2, 3, 4 rows done. Lily beat me in the race. We're going at corn. The corn is not as easy as I would like. We could cut it off, but we're going to silage cart this. That would poke holes in it. Look how much dirt comes up with it. Wouldn't be so bad if it didn't bring up so much dirt. That's good soil we've worked hard to get, so we got to leave as much as we can behind. That's hard right there, man. We're in a race. Lily got stung, had to quit. He ain't gonna let me catch him. This is my chance to catch up to you. I've caught up Lily and Gideon. Bless their hearts, both of them gone to the house for some bee medicine. Rooting it up is just tearing up the soil. I get down here and just break it off at the bottom, and then we don't disturb the soil. I like it. And it's going a lot faster. Well, that one— see that hole? See, that's no good. I'd rather not do that. Oh no, your forks weren't locked on! Shoot. Why is that leaking so bad? Where? Oh yeah, that's pretty loose, huh? I got it situated back up. Hopefully that's it. All right, goodness. Slept right through all that. Didn't quite finish. A little more piles of weeds there. We got to get the pumpkins up and we need to cover this, but we must stop. It's past lunchtime. We found the mother lode this morning. There was like, I don't know, how many is that? Like 3 dozen eggs right there. I'm working on finishing our garden project. That silage tarp over there is calling my name. We got to cover the garden. Didn't do anything yesterday, a bit distracted with the harvesting of Aunt Flossie, our family milk cow. She was getting old and ornery. We've got to cover this garden or the weeds are just going to take control, go to seed, and just run the place. The old crop residue out of the way. Let's stay— it's a silage tarp, it's not just a normal tarp, it's a UV-treated silage tarp. Tarp looks good, it'll hold it till we put some compost down this fall. Harvest the edible pumpkins. You know, harvesting can be half the garden. Excited, first time using our new root cellar. A little warm in there, I guess it's just so cool outside. The ground keeps keeps this room temperature regulated. Stack them up, not wash them. That's part of the trick— keep the dirt on them. Store these not touching each other. All right, we should be good on pumpkins and butternut squash through Christmas at least. All right, let's get the annoying job done first, then we'll get the fun job of decorating the farm with our pumpkins. That was an annoying job. I'm glad it's over. I'm thinking of the easiest place to put this. Finally, let's get the farm decorated. Problem is, these are super filthy, not fit for decor. My best idea is to put them out here on this gravelly area with good drainage. And hose them down and let them dry. And we have a decorated people barn.
