Finally, a pretty Chicken Coop for the Front Yard (mobile)

Justin Rhodes and his family build a front-yard chicken coop and pasture setup for their homestead. They move coops with a tractor, set up solar lighting, and prepare a butchering shed while managing feed orders and filming for their Rooted project.

It's kind of cool to see all these, all of them set up and stuff. I just saw Jason from Sow the Land. He's going to be in Rooted, uh, and he was, he showed some of the behind the scenes. It was really cool. They were right there, uh, mimicking the sun with their lights. It's, it's gonna look insanely good. I'm trying to get Gideon out. Maybe he'll take some yogurt. Gideon! He asked for it. Today we need to move the We need to get a posse going in our front yard. How about the Pretty Posse? Here you go, buddy. Will you promise me, because I want to— I need to get out of here. Will you promise me to eat that and then come?
Yes.
Yes, you promise? Okay, it's 8 o'clock. I expect to see you at 8:10. Okay, but Mama's up and Adam got Henry in the bed with you. Yes, he slept good. He did.
He slept so So good last night.
He did 4 and a half hours straight.
He gave me a 4 and a half hour straight, and then I was up for— he then was up for an hour nursing, and then he slept for 2 and a half hours and was only up for like 20 minutes nursing, and then another 2 hours. I'm like, this is amazing. And now he just nursed again and then just fell asleep. I'm like, okay.
Lily's on baby duty. Well, baby's mama duty. This is Henry's second happy spot. Hear that? The heat? Well, it's warm, but it's also a white noise. Mom will be in there with him, of course. Gonna take a bath. All right, I'm gonna go move the pretty posse. Honey, you got any special requests for chickens in your posse? No. Okay. Oh, and look who's done! And Ransom is Yogurt bowl. Get in. Thank you. And I love you so much. You know that? You know I love you?
On the Star Wars, there's a really cool guy. And then Chewbacca and Han Solo were working on the milling process. And then he said, let me help. And then Han Solo liked him. It was really funny. Oh, I like this guy more and more.
Gideon, before we go down, let's go check Arun's job. And before we do that, let's look and see what's happening to our, our chicken run here. Yeah, yeah, grasses, weeds have come up through the mulch, but we'll let them take that down and then we'll add some mulch. That's where they're going today. As I cross this road, I think of my drive yesterday into downtown Asheville to do some filming for Rooted, but it's like anytime I go to town, whether it's that or Ozone or whatever, I think of the Needy Homesteaders, not the K-N-E-A-D-Y Homesteaders. I think of that tragedy that happened, you know, the husband instantly killed by a drunk driver. The mom is still in the hospital. The kids have got neck braces and stuff. And we introduced them to you guys and their GoFundMe, and I just want to say thank you. I just want to say thank you guys from the bottom of my heart. This community inspires me. I think they were at like $300,000 and now they're over $500,000. We all know money doesn't solve— isn't going to solve the problem, but it is going to be one less thing to worry about. Thank you guys. I'm proud of you guys. Arun got this place cleaned out. Isn't this cool? Won't this be cool? A cool event center. Uh, maybe we'll have our premieres of Rooted here. Maybe we're gonna have our premieres of Rooted here. What? Yeah, I think I need to get with Arun. Uh, just texted the concrete guys, they might be starting this weekend. What? Yeah, I think let's move that when we get Arun to move the chicken coop with us. Come on, let's go get the chicken coop down. And then we'll get a room and then we'll move that. Why do you want to move that?
So we can tire swing and—
Okay, that's in your way. I might be able to move it just to get it out of your way. Oh, you'll help? Thank you. How's that? Good. Actually, I don't think that's gonna be easy to move. From there to here by hand. I think we'll want to pick that up with the tractor. In other news, the sawmill guy is finally coming Monday. Monday we're turning this— oh, there's your jacket, dude! There's your jacket, there's Lily's jacket. Oh my goodness, what do you guys have over here? Some kind of kitchen?
Yeah, look over here.
Oh boy. Oh my word, what have y'all made? Oh my, there's more! Hey, you know you're gonna lose this Monday.
Yeah.
Okay, you're cool with that?
Why are you gonna lose it Monday?
Yeah, because they're gonna start sawing these logs up into lumber.
Yeah, we always pick them all up.
Yeah. Oh wow, looks like Arun and the boys have brought the chickens up. Yes! The electrician's supposed to come in the, in the morning. Yeah, to beat the concrete guys here, because I guess we'll run some of the electricity under this concrete. But, uh, this is going to be our butchering shed right here. We can leave our butchering stuff set up all year. This is nice. This would be a nice view while we butcher. Look at that. Yeah, it's about to change. This looks like a junkyard right now, but this is about to look really nice. Good morning. Good morning. Here, put a chuck on it. All right, you about rolled over the chuck. Okay, you got that?
Can I do that? Can I hold?
Whoa, you can help him maybe. Wait, can you handle that without it? You sure? That is super cool. Looks super nice. Uh, don't let them out yet. Let's get the other crate in here and then we'll shut everybody out. My bet is they are going to come back up in this at night because it's so similar to the chickshaw in the greenhouse. You guys grab that end. I got it, Jenna. You got it. You guys can start letting them out.
I'm not doing that one.
Go ahead and pick them out. What are you afraid of?
Being bit.
Oh. Are you afraid? Oh, okay. Look at her there. Come on, that's why I had her coming here. Just start getting chickens. She won't hurt you. You won't hurt us, especially if that's Rosie. Is that Rosie? Come on, come on. There you go. All right, we got the pretty posse already going after the greens. Let's get the pallet waterer. We can throw some feed on the ground to encourage them to get these greens. That's amazing! How many are here? 14 or 15. Okay, that's not too bad. Plenty of room in that. That'll hold up to 30, but I think long term we'll maybe just have a half a dozen or so in here. We still have to save a lot of chickens for the pasture posse. Their work will begin in the middle of April. What have you got? A dinosaur egg. Oh my word, I think it's still good. It's a rotten egg. Let's crack it open.
There's like something in there.
Okay, you can throw it against the bottom there.
Don't throw it.
Ready? Is it gonna stink? Yeah. Oh, that's gonna stink. Let's get out of here before we catch a whiff. Ray's running like a bomb. I didn't get out of here fast enough. You better be glad we don't have smell-o-vision. Uh, I guess we still haven't fixed this. Okay, they must have used the pig board. Gosh, I wish we would have caught that on camera. That would have been interesting. Um, okay, Rune got a feeder. How many more chickens we got in here? Not many. All right, there's a lot under here. We'll take the fattest hens to pasture middle of April. Oh, you got a bunch of eggs. I see a chicken got in with beefsteak. Hey, you guys want to get some friends? Guys, this farm is going to start cranking the 25th. We're getting more pigs. Hey, are you getting another lady friend? You get one lady friend, and then we're getting two feeders. Feeders just means we raise them up and harvest them about 9, 10 months old. But we're getting another lady for old Beefcake, and then you can have Cheesecake. Whoa, we'll have to think of some other kind of cake once we meet this new old spot. Just look at this, look how nice this looks. Doesn't that look nice, Gideon? Oh, I like it. Are they on the phone? No. Oh, I gotta— I guess I gotta call them back. Okay, this is a very important call. This is the restoration people to restore our Suburban from having a birth. Inside of it. He's okay, baby. Oh, he's crying. Okay, we gave birth in the gas station. He's fine. Hi, this is Tommy from Superior Restoration. I'm calling— that was calling to give you a heads up that I was on my way to pick up the Suburban. Hey, it's Justin Rhodes. Totally cool to pick up the Suburban. All right, come on, Gideon, let's go back out. I had to leave a message, so hopefully they're just gonna come anyway. Where are you going with that? I'm practicing that. Nice. Josiah, will you get us a flake of hay for the nesting material? Thank you. You can use this hose. Yeah, we're gonna truck the hose up there, so that's great. Hey, they're here! I hear a truck. That's them. Wave at them. I don't think they see us yet. All right, they see us. You want to see the damage? Yes. Are you the one that's going to clean it up?
Yes, I am.
Okay. I mean, you'd probably expect an explosion, but it's not quite.
I was just looking about how the seats—
the—
because of what chemical I may have to use to clean it, but I don't see a stain or anything, so it's going to be a better, uh, more easier clean than I thought it was going to be.
Yeah, here's the stains. Pick up the mat. Yeah.
Okay. Oh, so most of it is in the floor?
Yeah.
Okay, cool.
Yeah, you can see some on the, uh, dashboard in the middle. See the middle console? You can see some. There's some down in the, um, threads.
Yeah, I'll take care of that.
You're the right dude. What's your name?
My name is Tommy.
Okay, Tommy. And what's this?
This is a PPE. This is personal protection equipment. Okay, it's used for biohazard and stuff like that is required by OSHA for us to wear and for self-protection.
So when you— before you get in here, you got a suit up?
Yes, sir.
All right, he's masked up, suited up. Let's see it. Nice. All right, everybody wave to Tommy. Tommy! All right, you guys got this. When that feed runs out, we'll start spreading it out, okay? I just realized I need to make a feed order. I need to do it right now because I keep on forgetting. Randolph is back, or continuing his work. Solar tubes. We're gonna light up the hallway and the bathroom with solar tubes. You know what that is? Yeah, solar-powered light. All it is is basically a skylight. All right, thanks. I sure wish I would have ordered yesterday or the day before because Wednesday's the cutoff. It's gonna it's gonna be a week until they can ship it out. All right, let's go, boys. I didn't want you to get too settled. How's it going back here? Good. I'm just trying to put stuff away because— okay, it gets a little bit— where's little man?
He's in there. He's just pooping, so I'm waiting for him to be done.
Oh, you getting some relief, buddy? Do we have enough for a week? Yeah, this— I'm not so sure. I'm not so sure about that. Should be fine. It's gonna be close. Yeah, yeah, I think it should be enough. This— well, that's the corn. Yeah, I don't think we need corn. Is that all the alfalfa we have? Yeah, we have two, so two of this and almost three. So that should be worth— that should be over a week. In a pinch, I guess we could feed our chickens this pig starter, pig feed. I think that would be okay, and we got plenty of that, so I think we'll be all right. Any lamb babies today? It is the 17th today. That means it's been 5 months since the ram's been with them. That means theoretically we gotta have a— hit any day. Look who's out the window cheering for me, knocking on the window. Mama and Farmer Henry. He'll be out here before we know it. There you are, little Farmer Henry. Were you waving at me? He was. Were you waving at me? But they're all jamming to hold him.
He's happy.
He's in a good mood. Nice. Teddy, Teddy, come here. He's going up. Say not to Mama. Not the Mama. How about let's get a shot right here just to emphasize the darkness in here, although this camera is lighting it up pretty good. I mean, we can turn on lights, but wouldn't it be better to have solar tubes? Hopefully by tomorrow we'll have something in here.
