Finally Got Her a Side by Side | 18 Year Wait

Justin and Rebecca Rhodes finally buy a side-by-side UTV for their farm after 18 years of wanting one. They test drive the Ranger and Pioneer, comparing cargo beds and seating, then choose a model with a winch they nickname Sally. The family uses it to haul hay, move livestock, and navigate muddy terrain.

Oh look, you found you one. Pink is punk, right Mr. Brown? Basically, we're here to look at UTVs. Randy Kleiman though told us we need both ATV, UTV. Use U2V, man. I've been holding out on this for 18 years. I'm not gonna just jump and get both, Randy. Don't be giving her any ideas. Come here, kids. Come here. Hey, come here. These are very expensive machines. I know, I know. You know, Rebecca and I have been married for 18 years, and for that entire time I can remember her wanting a golf cart. Set this collar down, that's ridiculous. Look, my overflow's overflowing. So let me ask you something, have you seen any golf carts around here? No, no, there's no golf carts. I've been holding out for 18 years. Well, to be honest with you, we have quite the rugged terrain to think that a golf cart would be really practical, strong enough to drive all over this place. So I hooked the supply line to the drain line. Full speed, get some water in this thing. Then we're gonna go see if the drain line— make sure the drain line isn't clogged up. Where's this drain line? So drains down into the creek. Where the water was going to end up anyway. Well, there it is. You see it there, but where's it going? Here. Here we go, here we go, here it is. It's flowing out real good. See that? So now I shut it off. Now it's full of water. The whole drain line is full of water. Fast forward to 2-ish years ago, we got back from the Great American Farm Tour, uh, got real serious about growing most of our own food, pretty much all of our own meat. So we're mowing behind the cows on like, I don't know, 8-ish acres. Let's turn this water supply line off. And I'm thinking, and our mower's a piece of crud, so So let's get us a nice mower and we'll get us a trailer, and maybe that'll be our— yeah, for this serious homestead, maybe that'll be our machine trailer, and then we can— it could be all in one, mower and side-by-side, you know, because when Rebecca wanted a golf cart, there was no such thing as a side-by-side. This was a— this is a new development. Let's hook this up, get that filling up. We shut it off there just to fill up our tank. Okay, now we open it up here. It's still gonna— it's gonna be overflowing here because it's not running through here. Now it can go down into the drain line, but it's still not going to go through because it's shut at the bottom. So, you know, when we got back and we needed a machine I did look into side-by-sides as, as beautiful ones, golf cart. But, uh, we'd hope that since we need a mower, maybe, maybe it could be an all-in-one. We open this up, water's in this, it'll start pulling everything out. Now it's got a vacuum and it's going to suck the water out. Hopefully by the time we get up there, it's going to be draining well. What do you think? Draining nice. So this thing turns out it's really loud. Rebecca doesn't like the zero turn, and it's not that family friendly. I mean, there's one seat. And now that we have our sheep that Beauty loves to manage That's an everyday move, everyday visit. And they're way— they're way up on the back 40. You can't even see them through the fog. I'm like, all right, all right, all right, all right, 18-year request, I'll consider. Let's go to the store.
Like 4-seater, 5-seater, or—
I was just— we were just gonna do the one bench.
One bench, okay.
Yeah, because We'll just all scoot in. Okay, together.
This is like a truck. Yeah, they're about the same size. This is a mini truck.
We got 13 inches of ground clearance on this guy as well. Um, power steering just like on the Pioneer.
And Rebecca, do you think we're all 6 going to be able to fit in there?
Um, I think enough of us can fit in here and then some people can sit in the back.
I mean, we could get double bench. But that's just a— that's just a circus, isn't it? That's just crazy. That's just a ride at Disney World. What about this little thing? This is more golf cart-ish. Or even this. You come look at the muleback. He looks a little more rugged, perhaps.
It's almost like a pickup truck.
Strictly nothing fancy.
Well, we don't—
just— no, I know, I know. That's what I like about it, perhaps. Huge bed. This is the biggest bed. Yeah, of all the beds, this would hit 4 hay bales easy.
I'm kind of nervous, like, this is kind of my thing. I'm kind of nervous about driving it.
Can we test drive it somehow in this parking lot or something?
Sure, sure.
This one's like, yeah, perfect for me.
Like this one, Rebecca, it's small.
These are—
but it's not as—
it's not as powerful.
Not as powerful. This is our, our probably our most popular selling side-by-side for farmers.
Really? Yeah, keep talking.
They're very, they're very stout machines.
I mean, I mean, how much power do we need, Rebecca?
I mean, I kind of want to try out a lot of them to see exactly what we want. Like, I'd like to try the Ranger.
I mean, you could put 4 hay bales on this Pioneer 1000 if you strapped that strap to it.
Now I feel like I don't know if we could haul all our family. Oh yeah, it's a little bit smaller, it's a little bit less, but maybe they still need to rock.
Hey, I still walk, I still walk. I need the exercise. You can, you can get on this and go.
Well, what, you're not— you're gonna gain weight because you're not gonna be walking? I said I ain't getting no weight because we move fences and okay, because we move our animals every day.
Yeah, yeah.
Let's go outside and see the kids, what they're doing. I think they're having fun.
Halftime here. How do you feel?
I feel I felt like maybe we're gonna find something that—
I don't think they're as like expensive as I thought. Yeah, you were just saying some are like 22,000.
Well, I think that was— that had like air conditioning and heating, which we had ruled out.
Not yet, definitely.
There's a purple one over there. I'm gonna say mine.
Yay, cool! That is your size.
I know how to drive a four-wheeler.
You know how to drive a four-wheeler? Yeah. How do you know how to drive a four-wheeler?
Uh, from Pete. Oh, Pete.
Uncle Pete, Green Dreams, Florida. Look at this one.
That's for me and Jessaiah. We're getting it, Papa.
You guys are gonna get that?
Yeah.
Did you see how much it was?
No, but—
Well, you better figure it out. This one is also convertible for more seats.
Yeah, so you would just push this back.
This you can work with. If you're getting a four-wheeler, you need one with racks. Because we ain't doing no recreation 4-wheelers. We're getting stuff done. You look good on that, Lily. Rachel's taking the kids. This is what we do for a date.
That's right.
Shop for UTVs together.
That's right.
We're gonna go test driving.
It's better than Lowe's.
It is better than Lowe's. This is more exciting. You ready to go?
You're in high right now. You can put it in low.
Okay.
If you guys want to like pop the curb and stuff like that, just see how it is.
I probably won't be doing any of that.
Well, you're free to go.
Okay, sorry. Thank you. It doesn't feel as, um, I don't know.
It's kind of got a gator feel to it. A little bouncy. That's good. A little bouncy.
It makes me feel— because I was afraid that it was going to feel like a sports car. I don't want it to feel like a sports car.
Okay, that's good.
Why does it feel like a sports car?
Take us up that bank, Becky. The Red Ranger or the Yellow Pioneer?
Okay, so I'm pretty sure it's the Red Ranger.
I don't know what the advantage of this thing is. The bed's not that much bigger. The seat's a hair bigger.
All right, here we go. All right, it's a little bit— it's bigger. It's a bigger—
it's a hair roomier. Am I in it?
Now I'm in reverse.
Just test.
There you go. Just give it a little gas to see where you are.
Why was I in reverse?
Does it not say on there? It says it right there.
Okay then. Okay.
I kind of like this because it tells us how fast we're going.
The other one didn't.
So this one's got the same bed space.
I kind of like it. It's a better drive.
It's a little smoother.
Yeah, I kind of like this one better. Sorry.
Why are you sorry?
It is quiet.
We don't have to wear earmuffs on this one. Okay, so for a little one, you like that one better?
I do.
Quieter, smoother, a little more powerful.
I did like it. I did like it.
That's big.
It's, it's feels like an army truck.
Oh boy, we're not off to a good start on this one. Okay, so it's got a huge truck dump bed though.
Yeah, it is more beefy. Yeah, it's like a— I feel like I'm like sitting up really tall and I'm in this tank, tank of a machine. But I like it better than the smaller one.
What do you think?
It's already smoother than the smaller one. Yeah, it's definitely got more get-up than that little one. Oh yeah, that's got better.
Yeah, there you go. So I think it's down to two.
Which one is it down to? This one and the Pioneer.
I like this one. You like the Ranger.
And then I guess though, if we're looking at that one, could we look at the price of adding that extra bench thing in it?
Yeah.
And what that is, we can go inside and look.
And do you think impressed this one because it's like the one, the white one we drove, but it is.
But it has this extra thing here for when we want to give a pop to that A-frame, give that a kind of a push there.
So you just pop that A-frame back down, pull your seat up. Okay, paper-to-paper comparison here. After comparing numbers, they told us the Rancher, the one, the Rancher where you can add a seat— well, seat comes with it, collapse it— is on sale. Yeah. It's basically $500 more.
Basically, I think we're gonna make Justin's dreams come true.
No, well, that's what we're gonna go—
I want to test it.
You have to want it because then I'm gonna be living with this for 20 years. You're gonna be rubbing it in because of your scab. I'm already in trouble for the scab.
No, you're not in trouble. I just think it's one of those things. Okay, we're gonna test drive the ranch.
I like that because we can have the big bed.
Yeah.
And then if we want to take your parents or something on the lake, or we have guests, we can put the seats up.
You're all set.
But it is nice to have that extra bench.
Yeah, that's that by-side karaoke.
You like to It doesn't bother me.
Okay, it's, it's all right. It's not too bad.
Well, I mean, we're not really—
it's real good looking.
I think it looks good.
You like that one? Yeah, it comes already with the winch, with the roof.
Need to—
I forgot you loved Kawasaki, and then I realized it's sitting in there.
I know, but I don't want another point against me.
No, I think—
I actually think that this is the best match.
Yeah.
After talking to him and then us discussing about the having the extra room to take people around and do things, I think that it's—
You're gonna feel comfortable zipping out to the sheep on this?
I think so.
Picking your minerals?
Yeah.
Yeah, I have a feeling that we're gonna have a lot of kids with us. No chores.
Well, that's family-friendly farming, honey. Yeah, they'll be excited about chores for a month. Maybe not even a month, maybe a week. You happy? And they're gonna deliver it today.
It's pretty exciting.
I did it, I did it. More points for Justin. Let's test it out. Let's drive it around the house. You got you a little truck, Beck. This is not a monkey jungle gym.
I know, but I didn't—
Calm, everybody be calm.
Should we go get some ranch edition?
Are you done? You signed? You ready to go? Well, let's get the back seat. Now you guys could be full. Everybody needs to wear a seat belt. Okay, how many people can we fit in side by side? Aren't you glad we got the double seat?
I'm the one who said we should get it.
There's 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. 8 people.
Go fast, too. Let's show me some speed. Mom, they're gonna— Let's see how fast we can go.
I can't see it. There. You can fit.
Okay.
Oh my goodness, Grandma, look what we bought! Oh my goodness, I can't wait to go for a ride!
Yeah, we got the double seats for Bruce. She lacks some confidence there. Gonna have to get used to the thing. Next day it was a little bit better and we went on a drive together as a family. Oh my God, really?
Oh my God, I got a bear!
That's a cub.
Watch it, watch it. I had a feeling we were going to see a bear.
Me too.
Oh, it's gone.
It's trying to climb that cliff in a pan.
Oh, it did.
Oh, that was beautiful.
I saw that bear. Did you get it on film?
You saw that bear? I saw it. So all in all, it is a more family-friendly machine. Not only are we going to get me more productive on the farm, we're going to be more productive together. So here we go, everybody's involved, huh? It's kind of hard to get everybody in Henry plus 2 hay bales. 2 hay bales could easily put these on their side, put 3 in there and one more right 3 more really on top, man. All 6 hay bales, easy. And still put 4 or 5 people, maybe even 6, in this front seat.
Wait, yeah, probably 6 people.
So, people, yeah. So we, we came up that and probably couldn't have done that on the mower because it's wet now. It's, it's that time of year. Things aren't really going to dry out. It's going to be awful boggy. 4-wheel drive is going to come in handy on this thing. Getting that hay to them was a lot easier, funner, and more family-friendly, don't you think? So we hopped on a live show on Friday night and somebody said, why don't you name her Sally? Rebecca just read the book Sally Field, one of her favorite actors, actresses. Yeah, Rebecca loved it. Sally. Now does this look like a Sally to you? Then Randy Clement said Sally's side by side. Okay, looking more Barbie-esque as we continue to talk here. Or Savage Sally. Look at those rims. Does that look like a Sally? Sally, Sally side by side, Savage. Oh, Sassy Sally. Maybe this is Sassy Sally.
Maybe.
Which one?
Sassy Sally.
Take your pick, depending on her mood, I guess. Lily's getting moose out. Good catch! Oh, look at this! Maybe it takes a girl's touch. Good job, you're fun! Wow, Lily, you do a better job than me at this. Excellent. My Cousin Garland visiting from California, and Rebecca's got him working. Rebecca's got you working too, huh, Garland? Okay, just wiggle back and forth.
You want me to go get the thing?
So it happens.
Garland got his. Try to bend it on the ridge. Unloaded the stakes. What'd we do without Sally Beck? Oh, look at all these sandbags. I'm totally moving over here, Rebecca. You're crazy. We're gonna put the chicken tractor up in the yard. They think that we could put it on Sally. So what are we thinking? We put this heavy end on her and somebody carry the back? I can carry the back. Oh, you think we can put it across? Okay.
The road beside it. Going too fast. Slow down.
Enjoy seeing Garland working. Time to move the sheep. They are up there, they need to come down there. So I put a— what you call, let's call it a source fence. Put one Premier One net all the way up, so then we'll build our net. See, we've built day 1 off of it, day 2 we'll build off of it, day 3 we'll build off of it, and it serves as a lane, a temporary lane, and this cow lane was already in here. We're gonna try it with one strand, one strand electric. Jonah, you're gonna herd them down. I'm gonna kind of be right here so maybe they don't try to jump the fence. Okay, once we get them down there, I've pulled up the whole side and they'll hopefully go in there. I think it's gonna work. I think These sheep are so timid, it's gonna work. Look, they're kind of coming at him instead of away from him. There you go. Sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep! Keep them coming, Jonah. I was a little— I'm a little worried about that area. There we go. Keep them coming, Jonah. Oh, these sheep are amazing.
You want to?
You want to? Let's try it. Let's try it. No, ask Mom if that's okay. That would be a lot That would be so much easier, Jonah, if we could just put Moose with the sheep. Now, last time I did that, they somehow got to each other. We have to keep this— make sure this fence gets turned on and hot. So we got the sheep in. Normally at this time we get Moose, we take him in. The problem is, well, we gotta cross the road, we gotta go down a lane. Stud Muffin acting like a fool, and he's got to go too. Because Mom's got to go to get Moose up. We put Moose up in the stall. We got to bring everybody back out, and then Moose is in a stall all night. Why do we do that? Well, we want Mama's milk to store up overnight, and we can milk her in the morning and get a good amount of milk. Jonah's idea— here's Mama and the rest of the cows— put Moose in here with the sheep, then Mama can be around him. So last time we tried to do that though They weren't with sheep, but we were going to put them in a net. Maybe he'll be occupied with sheep. But they got at each other because we forgot to turn on the fence. We didn't milk out Mama and she got mastitis. I don't think Rebecca's gonna go for it, but I think it's worth a try, and maybe she will go for it. We gotta make sure we turn on this fence.
Yes.
The other bad thing that could happen is they could knock this fence over even though it's shocked. The sheep could get out. What are we gonna do if that happens, Jonah? We're not. I think it's worth it. You don't? Here, look, open it up. Here he comes. He's trying. Shoot! Oh no, stud knocked her over! Goodness, I hope she's all right. She's in heat, which is getting ready to be bred. I don't know, she's acting funny. Her tail's up funny. He's— this is the normal dance. She's not going to stand for him, but for 12 hours Her tail's sticking up funny. All right, is she gonna poop? Oh, she's gonna poop. Well, that was easy. Jonah just opened the joint and he walked right in. The good thing about this, he's not too far from Mama, so there's no stress there. He's on grass, he's on hay, he's got lots of companions. That bucket, Jonah.
Why would he break out?
He would break out because he wants milk. Yeah, they would maybe try to figure out a way to milk. You can get minerals, you can get water, you can get feed. It's everything. Wow, that could seriously shave off 20-30 minutes. So we were moving the sheep and the cows, and we moved the sheep, and Moose tried to get into sheep.
So you put them in there?
Yes. I want you to know, I want to ask you what you think about that.
Is it hot?
That's what we gotta get.
Okay, as long as the fence is hot, I think it's fine.
It would be so much easier our life.
Yeah, and she got knocked up.
Yeah, Stead enough and knocked Phyllis down trying to mate her.
Is she okay?
Yeah, she is.
Okay, you were the one that had your sister last.
She's in heat.
Oh my God, has she ever been in like full heat though, do you know what I mean?
Like, oh really?
I'm just saying.
You don't think she went into standing heat last time? Does that happen?
It could. Oh, she's— it's hormones. Hormones can fluctuate.
Hormones, yeah. We're gonna test this fence. Your mama went for it. But you know, last time they didn't have companions, and look at that, it's just adorable. He's all about those sheep. It's reading. All right, 5.5. That's, that's going to keep them in.
