Finally, Siding the Holler House

Victor Rhodes and his crew finally start siding the Holler House, figuring out board orientation and flashing as they go. The day includes unboxing Quick Hoops for crop protection, a drone crash, and a spontaneous siding dance. Victor also announces the inaugural Abundance Plus Worldwide Film Fest, an open-submission event aiming for 100+ local hosts.

My morning started off right. Wedged myself under the bathroom.
Uh-oh.
I honestly thought I had fixed this. This was reenactment. Now this is real. I think this— the little ball thing. Precarious position. When I said my morning started off right, I was being sarcastic. Leave that cloth there, see how wet it gets. La la la, la la, let me be free. Happy day. In this food growing adventure. A little something special to help us with the veggies. Y'all want to do an unboxing? I'm excited about this. Oh, this is going to make season extension easier. Already bent. No bending required hoops. What I like about these Quick Hoops— K-W-I-K, I guess the other The right way to spell it is trademarked. Not that you can, uh, jump rope. My terrible jump rope, bro. Once assembled and you have the material over it, the frost protection, bug protection, uh, it's easy to lift it up and down. I'm excited to support a friend's company, Diego Footer. We met him early on in this vlog, way back in like 2016-17, Permaculture Voices. If you don't know this guy, you should, okay? This is Diego Footer. This is the man behind the Permaculture Voices Conference. You ready to go down below the house? Okay. Bless him, he's mad at me. He'd rather be excavating. We're getting our siding today. I mean, I can't just believe I just said that without more enthusiasm. We've got to dance in a minute, but Josiah's gonna kill me if we don't get going. We are arranging our zone zero barn, so to speak. Put the barn in the house if you want.
You can.
This is our basement. The living room's right there. Feed is something usually you got to get every day. Put it close to the house, not in the house. Told them we're gonna grab the swine feed, move it around the corner. Go get that metal or that concrete sink. Ultimately, I think I want to build some sort of shed on skids and put the chicken feed right where they're— wait, the sink right there. Uh, the kind of thing we've held on to for years, maybe we should use it, and we just never use it. And it's like Like a weight lifted off my chest. So, say you can move the alfalfa. The siding guy needs to see me. Yeah, he came over flagging. I gotta go see what he wants. We don't want him to slow down.
Put this one over here. Maybe not looking good. We put the siding all the way here. Yeah, and they put the strip. Let's not put it this one. That was too much space, you see, for the space for the windows, everything.
I hope I'm understanding them right. I think they're wanting to know how we want these, the siding set on the house. I got a siding question for you. Oh. Do you know how the siding is supposed to go on the house? To where you have one board horizontal on the bottom all the way across and then it goes vertical? I think that's what we talked about with Shawn. I had no idea. I don't think he wants to do that. I think there's a problem if he does do it. I'm caught in the middle, but I'm supposed to be at top, on top. Big Daddy's here. He knows about construction. I don't know about construction. I think they've started to put it on wrong. The other places they were right with that, from what I'm gathering. He said this is right.
This one's right.
This is right. Okay. He said, and then put the Z flashing on top. Okay, I think I communicated that. I think we're— I'm having them do the right thing. The crazy trick is I have no idea what I'm talking about. Am I hearing Rebecca right? Am I hearing Jose right? We're looking for some flashing. No. Alright, let's release poor Josiah. This is why he doesn't like to work with me. Looky here. I think this will be our station for our side-by-sides and mower machines we use every day. Our new barn. It's just a shed in the bottom of our house. There's the flashing in here, which incidentally is our old barn, remember? I'm a big fan of a barn and a garage. Our new garage is the shed. Beauty wants a garage for her car. It's been a lifelong dream for her. I'm happy to deliver. We had to extend it out 2 feet, raise the roof, widen the doors, and now the Suburban can fit in there. I have a suspicion. Did I tell y'all we're looking for like this PVC flashing type of stuff? I have no idea what that is. I'm texting back and forth with the builder. He put some stuff over here. Oh, oh, that's got to be it. PVC trim coil. I must put it over here with all this other stuff we're trying to keep out of the weather. Found it! Figured it out and found it. There's supposed to be one more, but today that's good enough. There it is! There it is! Woo! Never been so happy to find something I have no idea what it is. I'm gonna see what they're doing and learn. I think they're having to build their own flashing.
Ah. Okay. Hey, how was your lesson?
Good.
Yeah?
This makes me very happy. 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 very capable, hard-working men just swarming our house right now for siding. Crashed my drone in the tree and it's staying up there. I like crash a drone every day now, seems like. I'm gonna have to cut a branch out. Hey, we got it down with only a little propeller broken. Let's hope I didn't ruin it. Motor stuck. Oh, there it's broke for sure. Okay, I just snapped it in two. That feels good. We got a new method of doing things, safer and faster. I haven't forgotten y'all's dance either. We got to do the siding work is getting done dance. This is going to be humbling. It would be a much better dance if the crew was in the background. They're going to think I'm a fool. Makes me wonder what y'all think of me.
I don't know.
Uh, we did a dance even if we forgot the moves at the end. We're happy, that's what counts. It's hard to do that dancing in front of those guys. Good for my pride right there. Good for my humility. It's like these macho guys and I can't explain what I'm doing. And I think one caught me in the background. Did they, Austin? Yeah, they got me. What I do for you guys for a kick and a giggle. Please tell me you got a giggle. If just one person laughed at the dance, it's worth it. Whoa! What kind of domestic explosion do we have here? Will you give me $7 for cleaning one room? I don't know, I'll have to look at it. I think Mom and I are going to take a second to go look at the progress. A homestead house. Whole family affair. Block chops. What do you think?
Looks good.
Looks so good. Oh, that reminds me, I gotta line up the painter. Oh, Rebecca's got an unboxing. I do. This is a surprise gift.
It is.
It's a gift.
It was, it was a gift. So it's from Florette, and she— it was all packaged beautifully, of course.
Florette is the brand. Correct.
Her name is not Floret. You know her name.
Hey, I should clarify. A lot of times I'm asking questions for the people, not myself.
I have been watching the Floret special on Magnolia Network. So I've watched both seasons of that.
I actually wished I would have filmed her opening this.
I know, because she was like— I was fangirling so bad.
I had the privilege, uh, Jill introduced— Jill Winger introduced me to Erin. And we, we mastermind kind of back and forth text about every once in a while. So a friend. Did she leave a website or something, um, for people that don't know?
Floretflowers.com.
There you go. Rebecca's office has been the remodel, taking pictures for some or another. I get to privilege every day is bring your kid to work day, huh? I'm mainly working on the Abundance Plus worldwide Film Fest, first annual, this coming end of September. The idea is to take contributions from any filmmaker, like YouTubers, whatever, and get together these heartfelt, inspiring, educational homestead stories in a conglomerate of short and medium-sized films that get shown over a weekend— Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. That's one of the cool things. And we've— hang tight, there's the second part is even cooler. But we're getting films from, uh, White House on the Hill submitted one. Oh, I gotta be in this. I'm gonna be in the thing. And where?
In yours?
I got a couple bees inside here. Throw it off real quick. I'm working on completing a film I started almost a year ago on the lion's diet. What I'm really excited about is Late Frost, a European film. And another one we just got today, Against the Grain. I believe that deep inside you know what makes you happy, but there's a lot of different reasons and voices that will try to make you look away from that. And we have several others and more to come. Actually, if you want to submit your film, it can already exist somewhere. That's okay for this year. We just have to get some momentum. Just get it to us. I'll leave the link for that. The second and the coolest thing is we're gonna have worldwide hosts— you guys. We did that Homestead Directory where we had people put themselves on the map. There's like 4,500 people on the map. And I said, how can we use this momentum to get people together? Well, let's have a film fest so hosts can pick, do I want to show the Friday night films, the Saturday night films, or the Sunday afternoon films. And we get you these films and you host this in your house, in your church, in a community center. And the larger community, the whole homestead community, can come to the film— they can go to the film fest in March and either view it online, but hopefully, preferably, find a local host, hopefully all over the world. Last time I checked, we have at least 30 3 hosts. I want to get it to 100. Can you guys get us to 100? I think we can do it. If not, 200. Would you become a host? This is an event we need to do together. This can't be just Justin Rhodes putting this on. I want to hopefully initiate it, but then all y'all come together and we make this event a reality together. So, uh, link in the description to become a host. I'm hoping it's not too late for y'all to see this. Which, once we get the siding up, we can get rid of all this— the old roof. Whoa, we're starting to look like a regular house. By the way, before paint—
yes, it's not—
she's not going with yellow. What color are you going with? It's like a warm white. The sunsets though, been nice this winter. Oh, look, stucco job's looking good.
I know, it looks so good.
Hopefully we're landscaping for your birthday, May 6th.
I know, I know, that's what we do for my birthday.
