Becky and Rebecca document a day of heavy rain and flooding on their family farm. Four inches of rain overflowed the pond, clogged drains, and forced them to rig temporary redirects to protect the root cellar and livestock. Local roads closed and a grass-fed burger joint shut down as the community dealt with the damage.

The pond's overflowing. Oh my gosh, is this heading towards the house? Oh my gosh. La la la la la, let me be free. Today he has to go. We have 4 inches of rain going on right now, and he has to take his trucks, both of them, not just one. And not little trucks, big trucks. It's a downpour. As for 60 mile an hour winds, the kids are right, I guess. They didn't happen. Or if they did, we held up nicely, and the silage tarp got pulled up pretty —normal amount. The exposed is washing our soil away. Ah, can't leave you all without the umbrella. Oh, incidentally, Randolph's got our water. A normal rain floods our root cellar. We got a fair amount of rain water coming down this because we don't have gutters. All this water was going right here, our root cellar, and we're still flooded. Probably not nearly as much as we would have been. We need gutters, which is one of the last things we do. We have this lane Jerry rigged and directs water out here. Aha, is that the culprit coming off into that corner? I think I can rig something up on that and get him off my back. Hey, good morning. Good morning. How's Peaches and Blaze? Can Henry stay with you for a second? I'm gonna try a piece of that metal redirecting that water. Turns out wind isn't our problem, it's just rain. Seems to be working, catching a lot of rain right there. Oh my gosh. Really wet. I have never seen this. It's flooded in here. Thankfully it's not flooded over there. Hey, they don't want to walk through the water. We just made these hens' life significantly more happy. We got their feed and water out of the water. Y'all want to collect eggs? I think building these mineral shawls is a perfect project for a rainy day. I just got to check on this real quick. I think this puddle in front of the garage will go out that way towards the high tunnel. Uh-oh, somebody else had another idea to do some shop work when it rains. What's this? Saddle stand. Another one? Yeah. Oh, you need one for Blaze. All right, since we've separated our cows for the winter, we need more mineral salt. These are absolutely crucial. So I'm thankful for this day because we need to do this. First, let's clean. Amazing how we're gonna go from raw lumber to a thing maybe in an hour and a half. Josiah's just came and got us. The pond's overflowing. Gosh, this is some rain. Whoa. Oh boy. Shoot. Nothing's blocking the overflow. And what's blocking that? Yeah, there's leaves on that. This should be pushed down. This won't go down any further. This needs to bank needs to be higher. That's the overflow. Let's see how the drain— that's the main drain's doing. Uh-oh, that's the main drain. Yeah, that should be just gushing. Sure you unclogged that? Yeah, leaves on it again. Jonah's damming it up here so this pipe will catch— this overflow pipe will catch it all. Hey, good job, you dammed that up. Here, we're gonna take the filter off that thing. It's unscrewing. It's only 10 o'clock, guys. 5 more hours of this. I need a rope. Why? So that you can pull this pipe up from Just— all right, does that stick not pull it? That's it. It's a little bit more. Leaves keep catching on that filter. We're just gonna risk maybe a stick falling in there or something. We're taking the filter off. There it is. I want to get away from this. Now push it down. Don't get sucked in. I would say we cleared it up. Oh my gosh, you see it? We have a Oh boy. Uh-oh. Okay, it's good. It's not going to the house. Before the paved road has gotten clogged up. Look at all this water coming down, flooding the road, coming into here. We thought, oh gosh, is this heading towards the house? It is missing it. Okay, there's a branch coming here, but it turns back left at the dumpster. Let's check our drain right here. Okay, it's open. Wow. Now watch. Yeah, don't get near that. Just 2 months ago, this was dry. Not a drop of water in this little creek. Now Look at it. I'm gonna put this off. I'm shivering. Been shivering taking care of that for 10 minutes. I'm just calling it. I don't want to get sick.
Becky, be careful.
I am soaked. You're working inside, I'm working outside. I'm glad I'm working inside. You're the hero. It's gonna warm me up nice. The word on the creek is the wind has yet to come. Correct. So we're gonna have 60 mile an hour winds on top of floods.
Well, it's gonna be gusts. We're gonna start around like Uh, noonish.
What are you making? Cookies. For what?
For, um, giving Leah a going away party.
Okay. Leah's our babysitter who's going back to school. Wah wah wah. What are you making? Helping her. Huh.
Yes, dar? Okay, so one thing that I never thought about was we can do two runs of onions. You don't have to grow all the onions just in the fall.
Becks, continue work on seed time. Planting the garden. Here's your sausage. A big one. Oh, you want a bigger one? You're into it this morning, huh? Did a good job. Look at that plate. Oh, rain day equals town day. Y'all excited? Yeah! Look at this flood. Oh, everybody's flooded. First stop, the dentist. Y'all ready? Yeah. Have fun, y'all. They're heading to the grocery store. Y'all are going to the dentist. Who got the short end of the stick? Yeah, you did. Crazy thing, Josiah's already went. How was it, Josiah? Good, good. Everything good for you? Dentist drilling was good? It didn't hurt. All right, that's been about 30, 40 minutes, and Rebecca's Mary still isn't to the co-op yet. There's so many floods.
She's finally found a way. Okay, we are having the hardest time getting to the co-op. It is 2:44, and we dropped them off at 2 o'clock, and we're still driving 45 minutes later. He thought we should go this way, so I think that's how we're gonna go back to get back to the dentist. It's just been crazy. I'm, you know, I was hoping to be like done grocery shopping and headed back their way. That road is closed. That's what we were trying to do. We tried to go through there, so that road is closed right there. That's how we tried to go too. Oh, we made it! Go! It's a yellow light. It's a yellow blinking light, but we made it!
Lily's in now. How was it? Bad. Was it as bad as you thought? It was worse. Are you still sore? No. Okay, you're brave.
Did my grocery shopping, the groceries are in the back. We— Jonah had us take this one road. She's like, I think we can do it, and I was like, I think we can too. So we took it, we get literally to the end of the road and there was an accident and they turn— they like shut the road off. We had to turn her all the way back around, and instead of going all the way back to the interstate, we are taking this back road, and hopefully, hopefully it's done. So it is 3:45, so you're taking that left.
Finally! Mom had the hardest time getting there and back. Hendersonville is flooded. Look who's asleep. It's gonna be a late night for us tonight. Up your hour tracking today. You've been driving 2 hours. We try to support the local grass-fed burger joint, but the floods have closed that down too. Failsafe. This is all new to you. It's like, what's this? We don't get out much, do we? Look at these handsome boys. That is not normally a river. That was a field! What? That's normally a small river. Maybe the wind was a hype. Well, they—
okay, so we have days of a possible windy. They were saying like on, um, we were under a wind advisory or something.
That's kind of convenient, isn't it? Days of possible wind. Watch the news, see the ads. Oh, stop it!
Well, one, I'm not watching the news and I'm not seeing any ads, so—
Oh man, the neighbors! Whoa, their bridge clogged up the culverts and they have a mess on their hands. Heart goes out to them. Look at Mom sitting out at our food. I think it's the only time in this whole— this year we've had a take-in.
No, we had a Farm Burger.
We had Farm Burger. What a treat. We are all safe, we are warm, the electricity is still on. I know. All together, happy day, y'all.
