From Bad to Worse | I Can Hardly Walk

In this vlog, Victor (Speaker A) narrates a day on his homestead while coping with severe butt/back pain and a recent salmonella infection. He describes his attempts at self‑treatment—heat, ice baths, chiropractic, trigger‑point therapy—and his uncertainty about the cause of the pain. Despite his condition, he and his family continue routine farm work: milking cows, checking pigs, harvesting cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and squash, and managing garden beds. Community members such as neighbor Chris, his wife, and the children (Jonah, Lily, Josiah, Gideon) pitch in, illustrating the importance of neighborly help. Throughout the video Victor promotes the launch of “Abundance Plus,” an app and membership platform designed to connect homesteaders, offering a member directory, private Facebook group, and curated content (Rooted, Happen Films, etc.). He frames the platform as a solution to three common homesteading obstacles—lack of inspiration, know‑how, and community—while acknowledging it isn’t a cure‑all. The vlog interweaves personal health frustration, farm task updates, community interaction, and a marketing pitch, ending with a hopeful note about recovery and the app’s potential.

It just went from bad to worse. I just kicked salmonella's butt in 4 days. Peeing on my butt. I've got this injury, I don't know if from laying down. This pain in my butt. Hurts so bad. It's, I want to say it's worse. I can barely walk. The crazy thing is, I didn't really injure myself laying down, like, well, what is this? I guess one of our biggest fears fears is like, is this Lyme-related? I've tried chiropractor, I've tried ice bath. This is the 7th day at this moment I've been sick or injured. It's been a week to remember. What do we got? 33, 33, 34. I need to stir it in. 37, 36. Okay, I was hoping for 30, but we'll take it. Nice view though. Already red. It's been less than a minute. Halfway mark, 10 minutes. It's gonna be no problem. Get a little numb. Leg's a little red where it's been sitting in there. It's really no problem. I actually think this is gonna be the one thing that's gonna give me some relief. We're done. Oh wow. Oh wow. It starts. Wow. Gosh darn it. Okay, okay. It's still hurting. Of course it's still going to hurt so bad. But is it better? I was hoping maybe for some immediate relief, albeit temporary. I don't think I'm going to get it. Strange. Heat, cold. Don't touch it. Try heat. Nothing really helps like crazy. I'm gonna try heat again. See if it can help me get out there and help me with George. I don't know if I notice any difference. I don't even want to show you guys. I don't even want to vlog today. To be honest, the show's supposed to be about getting stuff done on the farm. Happy endings. Positive. Cheery. Today there's something wrong with me. If it's getting better, it's very slowly and we don't know what it is. I really wish I had a better story for you today. Like, how much of this injury sickness baloney are you guys gonna put up with before you just go away? Do have some good news though. Abundance Plus is here. Haha. Go and get it. AbundancePlus.com. It's also raining. Looks like we're off to a really good start. 365 new members just from the The pre-launch, those who signed up for the waiting list and those on our email list got a 24-hour early registration. This is all happened while I was down.
I just found those yesterday when I was walking around with Stephanie.
In your raised beds? No, in the greenhouse. Okay, it's working.
Oh my, I know, I'm— I've let it go Well, I walked in there with the— I let it go. I was like, you know what, but some of the beans, some of the beans have attached to the thing.
Did you bring me an umbrella?
Yeah.
I kind of need to go, guys, and check over it with you, okay, before our help gets here at 8:15. Rebecca, I'm so excited. I had no idea. I wasn't sure any of those plants would produce, you know, planting in mulch down in the soil down below, first time. Uh, that soil is obviously better than the soil over there in front of the pole barn.
Obviously.
So I'm happy even if that's all we got first year, but it looks like we're gonna have wheelbarrow loads of cucumbers and tomatoes out of there. So we'll still have to figure it out. Uh, it's kind of a hard job to delegate That's the problem, but maybe we could just be out there. I'm gonna make grit when it's not raining. Is that okay? Well, they were out of grit yesterday, weren't they?
Those guys need grit today, but they haven't—
they have a little bit of grit left. But it's raining, but how do you know you're gonna remember?
Because I go out there every morning.
Okay. All right, Jonah's got me the umbrella. We're gonna go check over people's jobs. One reason I want to keep vlogging this week, that's the whole spirit of Abundance Plus. That's the whole theme. You can homestead, we can help. Well, sometimes, sometimes you're sick and then you're in incredible amounts of pain. There's a zucchini. And you just have to figure out— there has to be no excuses. If I had no help, there'd be a lot less done. Thank God for the Kubota. All I gotta do is get in, get sitting, and this thing will take me anywhere on the farm. Where are we going with that? To the fat chicks. Checking the pigs. Water good? Grab the extra pans out of there. We can clean them up for tomorrow. Right next to the pigs, this supposed to be sprawling garden. I do see some greenage, you know, but it's got to get going if it's going to get going. We already passed the longest day of the year, so we're actually on the downhill now. Days are getting shorter. We got cucumbers off of those. Yeah, that's what— that's kind of crazy. It's crazy how the tomatoes are doing so good right here, but then there's that gap. I know they're all doing okay right here. You know, maybe raining out here, but it's not raining in there. We turn the line off for the beans and then, uh, we'll go turn on the water. Holy smokes, is that a gigantic onion? Oh my, that's a pretty gigantic onion. Hey, you want to pull that onion? Nice. Check it. Good morning. Jenna's got us— you got this water? This is Chris. You know, the first time I met Chris was yesterday. I met his wife, local farmer. He showed up to help us milk. That's the first time I met the guy. So that's a pretty good guy, isn't it? Chris, why are you doing this? Why are you coming out helping a basic stranger? Well, we live just down the road and, uh, heard your back was hurting and you couldn't get down and milk. So we've been milking cows for a couple years and just figured it'd be good to help. There you go. Thank you, appreciate it. Going over the lucha doors. These kids are doing a good job. It's a lot on them. They're doing a good job. Alrighty, I'm doing a little more than yesterday. I'm able to get out of the truck. Come back here, huh? You were even moving. You're gonna help Chris today, Lily? I guess so. They've got her washed. More alfalfa. We've got a window with Flossie, especially in floss season. She's got to get milked out pretty fast or she gets kicky. All right, you should be able to start Chris now that she's— see if you can't get in there, Lily, for a little bit. There you go. Jenna's doing fly duty. Keeps her happy, right, Jenna? Yeah. Okay, they found a job for me. I can stand here and do flies. All the flies aren't quite as bad when it's raining like this, so it's good. You get it done, Chris? Yeah, she feels pretty milked out. How much milk do you think we got? That's a 2.5-gallon reservoir. I think about a gallon and a half. That's good, that's normal. It's amazing how yellow the milk is. Must be from all the grass. Yeah, and we're not calf sharing right now, so we're getting all the milk, which means all the cream. I wish I knew if it was better to rest it or better to push through the pain. Do I listen to the pain? Do I push through the pain? What's gonna make it better? I just gave them a scoop of alfalfa. This is one of my favorite paddocks because, well, it has a lot of brambly stuff, and that stuff digs deep down, brings in a lot of minerals, and I think this gives the sheep a good health boost. That was very kind of Chris. He's leaving. He got us milked. I couldn't do this alone. The community is important. We had the premiere of Rooted 5, a TV show, last night. One way that, you know, Abundance Plus says you can homestead, we can help. There's, there's, there's a big community aspect. Community doesn't just have to be for me. Here, here, the storm's gone. I know, right? We get done. Come on. So one thing that we've done inside Abundance Plus is we've made a member directory so you can list yourself. You can also find others. But we also have a private Facebook group where folks can interact and find each other. I'm gonna see if I can actually do a chore. It's gonna be a change if I can actually get this stuff upstairs. Hey, hey, you came back! Yeah, I came back. Thank you. You grab that. Kind young mama's gonna let me hold him, I think. You think I'm clear enough? From the bug? It seems like it's been solid for the last couple of days, you know what I'm saying? Don't make me go into any more details. She didn't say I need to wash my hands. Aren't you happy? I missed you. Everybody clean up and then you can get Abundance Plus on your iPods, which is kind of cool. Like, we don't want them on YouTube because it's too— they easily get into nonsense. You guys can watch our vlogs, you can watch Jason's vlogs, you can watch Dan Oman's, you can watch Happen Films, you can watch Rooted instructional videos. You happy? Say I'm happy. Any— anyway, Papa. All right, you got your area cleaned up? Yep. Okay. Yeah, there it is, Abundance Plus. It's coming up in the search. There it is. All right, go ahead. It's downloaded. Now let's open it. Slick. Heck yes. Allow notifications. All right, you're already a subscriber. Let's get you in. You're in. Just say what's the first thing you're gonna watch. Well, you can watch the latest episode of Rooted. You can watch the vlog. You can watch Happened Films, any of their short films. You can watch contributors. I just saw Jill Winger in there. Yes, we just got some content from Jill Winger. Here you go, Gideon. It's on your device. Just decided you've got anything to watch yet? Yeah. What? Yeah, this one, uh, Holland Homestead, quick visit, always progressing. It's just an old vlog. One thing we've got to do is go live to announce this thing. I was going to do a video, but then I'd have to sit down and edit that video, so I'm thinking live's better. What do you think? Uh, and people like live because they can interact with us. This is kind of exciting. Uh, we're going to address the— we're going to address the are we quitting YouTube thing.
Oh, Because we're not.
Because people, people be wondering. Rebecca's gonna give me Henry. I found my happy spot in this chair, and the heat really helped, I think. So she's gonna give me Henry. She can go take care of herself. Lily's making breakfast. So after that, did you find one to watch?
I was gonna watch the video from last night, episode 5.
Oh good, Lily's having me put it on hers. So first thing you want to do is go to abundanceplus.com, sign up, and then go to the App Store, Androod or— what did I call it? Androod? Android or Apple and get the app. All my kids are jonesing to get it, which is cool. They're like my number one fans. And then once you've signed up online, then you can go download the app and sign in. You can buy from the app, of course, but we get quite a bit more ourselves if you just buy it from us directly on our website. But whatever's easier for you guys. Okay, I'm putting this on Lily's phone. All right, I just did the heat. I really think— huh, I think it's doing something. Uh, Josiah, what'd you end up watching? Uh, Rooted One. Rooted One. Gideon, he ended up watching a gun safety video of all things. It's a perfect place for it. She's really taking over here, man, getting organized. Got us a calendar, got us a menu. July 4th, back. That's the goal, that's the goal. You think it's realistic? Gotta be walking around like a semi-normal person by then. How are we gonna get to that goal? Chiropractor on Monday, physical therapy on Wednesday.
No, yeah, chiropractor Monday.
Yep.
Physical therapy.
Yep. Yeah, heat, rest. My body's saying rest, obviously, because it hurts so bad. Lily, how's the French toast coming?
Good.
Good. Mom's making more broth. Hey honey, you're not just surviving, you're thriving. Taking over here. I like it, man.
We have a very full July.
Yeah, you gotta get me better. It always tastes better when you make it, for sure, and when you grew it. Everybody think, Lily. Thank you, Lola. I guess we thank everybody because somebody helped grow those eggs.
Just open this.
Am I supposed to, Mom?
Yeah, I told you to use it.
At least I still got my hand strength. Maybe not.
It's really hard. It may be—
you can't grip it because this is in the way.
I know, it's bad.
Right there, I think, might have been game changer. She made me get down there. She did trigger points, which When you have pain, there are trigger points. They're not necessarily where the pain is. They're like knots in your muscle.
Yeah, I did up his back like I did up in his shoulder blade. So I have an app, a trigger point app, and it— you can see where the pain is and then it'll show you a general area as to where the—
I'm just walking just to demo while you're talking.
He is walking. He likes— I feel like he did so good.
We just did a show almost an hour long live for you guys on YouTube.
Which I like doing lives actually. That was kind of fun.
I think we need to do it like once a month or something. And I feel like I went to the bathroom before the show and I had a glimpse of hope. I was very defeated because this is like the third day. But I feel like there was change, Becky. I also did some stretches, you know, I did some of the—
Yeah, I had him do some stretches that I looked up online for this type of thing.
I think movement is good. That doesn't hurt it. Yeah. And I found some stretches that kind of were stretching it without hurting.
I think that's what the thing is, is that the muscle isn't— is not relaxed. It's tight and, um, spasming, if you will.
Do you want me to hold him? Sit down and hold him?
Yeah, you can, and I'll make some food for the kids.
Okay. Yeah, we've been inside resting, coming out for a minute. Josiah's got us some We've got some squash coming on. See that one? That one's perfect. Uh, we just harvested way too big ones, put it to the chickens. It's hard to keep up with the squash at this time of the season. Beautiful one. Your garden is jamming.
No, but I'm upset about this.
What happened? I don't know. Is that the heat, or is that—
no, I saw it yesterday, and there's—
it was a swivel if people didn't see it. It's— she cares for all the plants, you know. They like her. The whole garden is jamming, but there's one little swiveled plant.
It's dead.
I even got jamming cucumbers off of it. No, but it's upsetting. It's upsetting to you.
It is upsetting to me.
Over here is mucho life, and right here, look, look at your peas.
Oh, I know.
It's a struggle, isn't it, Beck?
It's a struggle as a newborn.
You want them all to—
I want it all.
You want them all to make it, and I want to eat it all. Will you eat it all? What about all this squash over here?
No, I cannot eat all this squash.
Okay, so eat most of it.
I'll eat some of it.
But you want to eat all the cucumbers? You can't see because of the shade, I don't think. Maybe you can see— yeah, squash bugs coming in. I'm talking to the vloggers. You can see it.
No, it's very frustrating.
I think that you're gonna get most of your fruit before anything ever happens. I could be wrong.
You're doing really good.
I know something happened. Something happened. We should have documented that. I didn't think it was gonna be nothing. Oh yeah, we got another trigger point tonight. That'll be the happy ending. You guys get to see Rebecca torture me. How about that?
Oh, it's a torture.
Jonah's gonna hold the baby. Mom's gonna weed the garden.
Looks like fried green tomatoes. I know, we can have fried green tomatoes, guys! I'm so excited about that.
There are 3 things that might be standing in the way of your homestead dreams. That's lack of inspiration, it could be lack of know-how, it could be lack of community, loneliness. There are many solutions, choices, options to address all those. We've spent 15 years in the homestead world, and we've met and meet with those every single day. We don't know everything. There are times we still feel isolated, unsure of ourselves, and there are times when we don't feel so motivated. We all go through that. You've seen it today, and, and that the struggle is real. But what the work we've done to put up Abundance Plus to address many of those issues— well, all those issues. I'm not saying it's a heal-all, but it addresses those issues— has been 15 years in the making. And it's there. It's, it's something that's easy to use, easy to accessible, many price points for everybody. I would encourage you to know that you can homestead and that we can help. And I don't mean that in a cheesy way. We're going to keep helping you here on YouTube. We're not going anywhere on YouTube. But if you want to go anywhere further, if you want to go further and, and get real serious about it, I would encourage you to check it out at abundanceplus.com.
That's so good. I'm gonna go try it.
What are you gonna do with it?
Dry it, put it on the counter.
I probably shouldn't be handling the food, should I?
No, you shouldn't.
Whoops. Well, she's got plenty more. I won't grab this, this one. The doctor said 2 weeks.
The family doctor wanted 2 weeks, you know, handling food. Yeah, sure, since you came down with it. So, okay, next weekend.
All right.
She felt like it would be safer because it could still— you could still be—
it's kind of convenient because I'm so injured, although it's healing fast. All of a sudden.
This is calendula.
Oh, nice.
Flowers.
What are you gonna make with that?
Um, I make like an oil and then I put it in my lotion.
Nice.
Or you can just use the oil or make a salve or whatever.
All right, here's y'all's happy ending. Rebecca, come torture me. Because it seems to be working. Is that one supposed to be connected?
Yep.
Wow. Gosh.
