Front Yard Homestead Transformation

A family spends the day building a new chicken coop, moving animals, and preparing garden beds with compost and leaf mulch. They till soil for raised beds, set up a pumpkin trellis, and cook taco soup from their garden vegetables while coordinating home renovation work with a contractor.

We are front yard homesteading today. Gonna get a new pretty coop for the chicks. Our veggies are coming along nice in our raised beds, but we got a bit of a haircut we need to make happen. What is it? Big ones. Oh, watch that zucchini because it gets growing crazy fast. Oh wow, okay, so as soon as that flower dies, like tomorrow, the next day Let's get that zucchini. Okay, let's take today and beautify this front yard homestead. Let me be free. How the turkey's doing? Have we lost any more? No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 12. No, seriously, there are 12 in there. That's good. The chicken tractor has been protecting them from the hawk. Look, I think he picked off all our young ones. We've ordered some more, and maybe it was a knee-jerk reaction, we ordered like 20 more. Oh wow, look, it's out! Given it's so purple, maybe it just had a heart attack. Moving day for the sea monsters. Gotta move their net. They're coming right here. The grass is kind of gnarly where they're going, particularly around where we're gonna put the fence. All right, are you guys okay? Oh, so sorry about that. Okay, stay steady. This tall grass is definitely gonna round out our fence. Vamos! Good job! This never gets old. Doesn't matter what animal, doesn't matter how many times you've done it, moving them to a new paddock. Such disturbance now. It's just caked with manure. You can see the progress. 3 days ago 3 days before that. I think they, you know, come through here and then I think they started there. Certainly greener than it was. I mean, soon Rebecca's got an appointment though. We need to fix breakfast, get her out of here, and then let's put that to the chickens. All right, you glad to have Mama back? Because she's going away again this morning.
He's a man of few words, right?
Yeah. Acting like he's tired. Yesterday we went to my co-author's to pick up the perfected Pretty Shawl. Chris needed to build the Pretty Shawl in order to create the step-by-step plans for the Pretty Shawl. There's the original. There's nothing really wrong with it. We have so many chicks in here. Do we actually want two Pretty Shawls in here? What do you think, Birdo? Switch them out or put two in here? If we put one, we do have to get some of these guys out. We don't need so many in this yard, do we? No, we don't. All right, let's switch it out. And it just hit time. What do you think about the new Pretty Shawl? It's very pretty. The new Pretty Shawl. At Burrow Hauler. First time. Uh-oh, we caught some bugs on the way here. Okay, you getting in, Henry?
I'm getting into it with him.
It's now your chance before it gets dirty. Okay, now you guys can thank Chris. This one is so much lighter. Y'all are just in time to get the new pretty shawl in. Mom left her acupuncture. Henry's chased after her. Don't worry, this is a dead-end road. Come on, we go get you some water. I brought him back. Nice. He wants her water, but she's gone with the water. Oh, they're going in and out like it's their old coop. All right, you gonna string trim?
Yeah. I have shirts on.
Okay, Jonah, you want to string trim? Okay, y'all go eat. I haven't eaten breakfast. As much as I want to start, I guess I am starting. This is the most important thing. You want your Jeep working? Yes. Okay, this is Jeep. This is Jeep work. You want to go to the shed? Yes. Why? Do you know what's wrong with his Jeep? Motors and the wires. Really? Hey Henry, your Jeep's broken. My first priority is got to get everybody situated. Get in, sand the fuse, because yeah, it's all acidy. Do we have any extra fuses, Jonah? I don't know, we might have something in there. Jonah said he's trying to fix it so he can go after Mama. Are you trying to fix your Jeep so you can go after Mom? Let's go down there and let's play while, while we pick up the yard. Okay. All right, go pick up a couple of toys. Will those work, Henry? Okay, I'm gonna show you a secret playing place. Okay, I've got an idea to get him occupied so that I can work. Come here, I'm gonna show you a secret spot under the porch. Go under there. Windy might be under there. Is Windy there? No. Okay, you guys want to play in there? There's dirt over there.
Oh wow.
All right, y'all have fun there. I probably have at least 20 minutes. We got this stuff all ready for the dumpster. Henry has lost his interest in the dirt. Get in, Henry! You playing in that greenhouse? Yeah, it's not too hot. Okay, you're good here. I love it. I told Lily to come weed these raised beds. She was like, less than 5 minutes, she's like, there's nothing to weed. And she's right. This leaf mulch worked fantastic. We composted in the fall, put down a layer of leaves because they're plentiful in the fall, covered it all winter, and with the mulch in the spring. Y'all see that? Hopefully y'all saw that. He just up and picked that up with that machine. Anyway, okay, we're done and we got to move the pigs. They've done their till job. You don't want to miss that, but let's, uh, let's show you. Austin, cue up the before. Here's the after. This front yard homestead got a haircut. It looks good, looks as good as the organic food that it is. Oh, looky, looky, they tilled it after we wet it down. Ladies and gentlemen, you're crushing it. All right, let's move it. Mom said we got to speed this up, so let's soak the next spot and move them on. We wanted more garden beds so that we can have a pumpkin arch between the two. We're gonna have a grass path. Rebecca's got an idea for a beautiful pumpkin trellis. Turned the pig port into a pig tractor and made enough area. They tilled, guys, it was soft and they tilled this and it's ready to be shaped into 3 beds. Getting you hosed, the pigs down. We'll wet this down too before we cover it. I love it. Keep going, one more foot. All right, that's it. Pulled it too far. Oh shoot, how'd we do that? We started there and then moved it. Dang.
Okay, let me go get a chain. We can hook it up and I'll pull on that side. That way our tires won't be in there.
Look at them go on that fresh grass. What do you have there, Henry? Some cucumbers? Good job. Y'all want to have cucumber sandwiches for lunch?
Sure.
Yeah, cream cheese on that, salt, pepper. We pulled this too far, so we need to pull it back another 3 feet, but we didn't want to put the machine on the mud, and his idea was to get a chain. I think it's a good idea. That's good right there. Just changed. It is too hot. I enjoyed this meal so much, I was actually Shocked. We are making taco soup on today's episode of Burn It Up with your show. Frying some onions, peas from the land, kind of a hodgepodge meal. Added some mixed vegetables. We're gonna go ahead and cook that. Those are browning. Yeah, put the leftover meat in there, and then we have this broth we just finished cooking right there. I do like a meaty soup. And the rice. I'm gonna add more carrots because we have them from our garden. Look how crisp these is. These just like Pop. Let's put the leftover pico de gallo in there. Black beans just added. A jar of crushed tomatoes.
Also, Papa, all the tomato paste came off of the rice.
Oh yeah, that too. How was acupuncture?
Oh, so good.
She's helping.
Do you hear my voice? So much better.
Look, he's got his new shirt. Let me see that new shirt. Let me see that new shirt. Whee! We got soup. It's a hit. This afternoon we got a meeting with the contractor on the house build. I almost said the contractor because that's pretty much what he's been for us. He's the framer, but he's also lined up a lot of things for us.
Okay, and I'm gonna tell you what I told the tile guy. The only way that I can get rid of that is to reframe this floor.
We're making sure the floor is going to be able to hold that tub, the tile, all those things. Sean's taking care of us in there, supporting the floor. Little HVAC talk now. We got to get those tubes out of here.
Just do it out of this.
Yeah.
And I told him we'd push it up best we can.
Yeah.
And then Justin and I were like, I mean, that TV should be able to fit right there. What are we doing here?
I need a door.
So what are we building it out of?
Whatever you want.
What happened to you? You been in the raspberries? Don't touch the walls. Hey, you need some more watermelon, my man? Some watermelon season. You guys are hard-working boys enjoying the evening. I want to see your paint job.
Yeah, oh yeah, sure, show me.
Oh yeah, oh, he wants to show it to me. All right, look at that. You add to it here with that watermelon. I heard it's organic too, so you can feed the rinds to the the pigs. Beck, after supper here, this one— I gotta go show you the front yard. We gotta look at the raspberries and see what we're in for for tomorrow harvest. The next 2 days are big. We have to figure out potato harvest, onion harvest, transplanting. My freeze dryer comes. Freeze dryer comes. What else?
Um, something else is coming.
You got to figure out that freeze dryer before my— the boys and I's camping.
Oh, I will. And then we need to seed things and we need to— seed things for the fall garden. Oh, I need to make things for tomorrow night's dinner. We're celebrating Father's Day with my parents tomorrow night.
And then that's Friday. It sounds like 2 days worth of stuff. Okay, you go get a paper towel. We're gonna say happy day.
All right, 1, 2, 3. Happy day!
Happy day! All right, I like it.
