Garage Shelf Too Flimsy, So I Built This Instead

In this informal farm vlog, the narrator (Speaker A) and family members assess the shortcomings of a set of sagging, un‑attached Lowe’s metal shelves that are too narrow for their mineral buckets. After deciding the shelves are inadequate, they download Anna White’s DIY shelving plans and set out to build a custom, sturdier “mega‑shelf” using 4×8 half‑inch plywood, shims, ribs, and pegs. The video walks through the entire build: measuring, cutting, nailing, installing foot posts, and adding extra ribs for strength, while repeatedly noting the incremental 1% improvement mindset. Mid‑project, the group troubleshoots a dead tractor battery, using a jump‑starter box, a Suburban vehicle, and long jumper cables supplied by a mechanic named Mark, eventually discovering a faulty alternator. After the tractor is revived, the crew shifts focus to Mother’s Day preparations, discussing desserts (coconut chess pie, gluten‑free Samoas bars, paleo fruit pizza) and lamb‑burger meals. Throughout, there is light‑hearted banter, teamwork dynamics, and reflections on organization’s value for farm life. The video concludes with the finished shelf being demonstrated, the mother’s reaction, and a heartfelt Mother’s Day message.
Chapters
Can you wear this for 15 minutes until that dries? Will that work?
Yeah.
These shelves have served us okay. They're from Lowe's. They sort of did the job. They're a little, they're a little tight. Okay, so it's a little hard width-wise to get our 3 mineral buckets in there and It's a little tight tall-wise, so you got to get it just right to get them out. And this— the shelves sag a bit, and these shelves are not attached, and they sort of— they jump out in some places. Oh yeah, look, see there, it's collapsed. Okay, so we've got a plan. We've actually downloaded some Anna White plans, and we're gonna do some do-it-yourself shelving right here. Like mega shelf. Rule 'em all shelves. Oh, you're fast. Oh, I'm just getting a skim over their head. They won't move out of the way. Every time I pour it, they move into it. I like your face mask.
The pigs didn't eat me.
That's good. How are they doing up here? Good.
Okay.
So what are you gonna do with that?
Well, I was gonna put it over here, but now I'm thinking I'll put the metal shelf back over here because this stuff isn't that heavy. The problem with those metal shelves is that it— the shelving was like Buckling, is that what you call it? Anyways, this is not heavy.
And that's, uh, that's cheaper than this metal. That's even worse than the metal shelf.
Yeah, this is a pretty unstable shelf.
Okay, so what do you want me to do?
So we'll go get one of the metal shelves and bring it back in here.
Yeah, put it where you want it and move it off.
I'm getting rid of this one and this one.
Okay, I can't wait to see this.
Say it.
I can't wait to get organized.
Every day.
Every day and every way we are getting better.
That's right. One, just 1% change. Did you notice if you just changed 1% every day, it doesn't take 100 days to double, it only takes 72 because it compounds.
Compounds. And it's so much better. It's just so nice to be organized and to know where your stuff is on your farm. Yeah, as opposed to being like, where did I put that?
And isn't this a cool stage that we're in? We've got our meat. Yeah, we've got our dairy. Now we can smoothify everything, organize easier. We've got 10 freezers full. We're ready to to organize.
Yes.
Priorities.
Priorities.
I can't believe I just fist bumped you. I think that might have been the first time in our life.
Probably.
We should hug. We should not fist bump. We should hug. I shook your hand too hard.
You shook my hand.
Hugs, hugs. Hugs for the beautiful one. No fist bumps, no shaking hands. Hugs and kisses.
Or we could do this.
We could go— Funny.
Wait for the thumbnail on that one. Oh God.
All right, I'm pretty sure the shore in this tractor has too much sapped our battery, but let's just try to see if it'll start. Maybe we'll get lucky. Nope.
All right, I've got a jumper box hooked up to it. Let's see if that'll do it. It's been doing it.
It will do it.
You think so? Uh-oh, uh-oh. Let's add the, uh, jumpers. Okay, I got this hooked up too. Any juice we can get. Okay, go for it. Yeah boy. I don't know if our jumper cables will reach from there to there for the truck. All right, try one more time. Is that on? Oh, it's not on, bro. Okay, try it now. Almost. Try it again.
Try it again.
All right, let's give it a little bit. Jonah, do you know where our little broom is? I mean, this is all well and good for the most of the floor, but we need a little broom to get the edges. So we, we can do some things. We can get that shelf out of here. We can get that shelf out of here. Oh, we can, we can tidy up. We can finish sweeping. There's some things. Buy us 15 minutes, maybe that'll get charged. Now that's a pile of trash. We got it, uh, swept up in here. I mean, what's the point of a nice organized shelf if the rest is a mess? So we'll sweep this once we get it out. All right, you think we can get that wooden shelf?
Yeah.
All right, you grab that end, or would you rather walk forwards? Would you rather walk forwards or backwards?
Forward. All right, roll it. I don't know how to put the shelf on this side.
You're on a truck, you do it like this, and then maybe you can pick it up. Can you get it that way?
I guess.
There you go. Good deal.
Now where are we going?
One more shelf. You got that one? That's easy.
It's plastic.
Good job. All right, let's try the tractor again. I'm like 60% doubtful. It's showing I got half a set of batteries, so I'm assuming that maybe it's charging it. All right, ready? Ah, so close. We got the Suburban right here. You think it'd reach?
Maybe.
Might be worth a try because I don't know if that's gonna work. —We opened the hood and the battery's way back in the back, right there. No way it's going to go from there to there, so Maybe if I pull up and come alongside it, it'll work.
Let's get the jumper cables and see what that would look like doing that.
Yeah, let's see if that's even possible. That's a good idea. Well, look who's here coming back for repairing one of our tires for the tractor trailer. It's Mark, our mechanic. Maybe just in time. You put it on there and let's see what we're looking at. Is that where it will be? Yeah. Nope, no way. Can't get close enough. Hey Mark, that thing, uh, that bolt ain't long enough. Oh, that one wheel, that's what it was. Okay, all right, have you got this hooked up? Yeah, it's hooked up. Now if that leaves it, leaves on, will that charge it, Mark? What's that? Will this thing charge it? No, I think it's just a jump. It's just a jump. Okay, enough in there to— yeah, it's not going to start, but he said we could do jumper cables to jumper cables, but he thinks his are back at the shop. You got some? Oh, he's got some. Oh look, we don't even need two cables. Mark's got very long cables. Let me get me a pair of those. Yeah, you need it. I always use a good set with room to spare. All right, you want to try it? Give it a minute. Try with the jump box hooked up too.
Now it's full battery.
Look what it did. Wouldn't that be— what's that? It's coming from the Suburban.
Oh, ready? Yeah.
Hey, we just got the tractor started. I know, I saw that.
I was thinking an hour later.
That's crazy. Alternator. It's the alternator. It's bad.
Is that the electrical?
Does this say 1991 on it? So it's 30 years old. The alternator is. Yeah, it might not be an electrical short. It might be that the alternator isn't working or wasn't working properly. The alternator charges the battery.
And the hydraulics are working? Yep, he fixed those.
That's awesome. They work good.
Um, so I'm thinking about starting on—
You make your desserts. The desserts. What's on the menu for Mother's Day?
Somebody posted this recipe that I had apparently posted a long time ago. Coconut chess pie.
So I wrote it down.
Cause I've forgotten about it. So I think I want to make the coconut crisp pie, and then I think I'm gonna make the gluten-free Samoas cookies, but I'm gonna make them into bars instead of cookies. And then if I have time and I have energy, then I might make the paleo fruit pizza with cream cheese frosting.
Wow. It's amazing. Okay. It's good to be your husband. So we're having pizza.
I know, why am I making all these for Mother's Day?
I mean, it's my job! I didn't say it wasn't my idea.
Well, I guess because I'm making it for my mother.
That was crazy. That was crazy. Seriously, over an hour delay. I feel like we're starting to work. We're gonna move this out first.
We're probably gonna get to nothing today. We only got 20 minutes.
Well, we're just gonna put chores off. We were hoping to do chores early, but we can put them off, right? We were gonna do them early, maybe relax. But we gotta get this done for Mother's Day. All right, well, I thought we were gonna work. Mom needs me.
I was trying to figure out if I could take this off.
What's the problem? It won't open.
Okay, somebody shoved it too much stuff in there.
Okay, and now I can't get it.
All right, I have to do is take this drawer off.
Okay, um, but I don't really know how to do that. Okay. Well, I got it out. I was able to— luckily the jam was right there and I was able to put a butter knife in and push it down and get it out. All right, you got it from here, Beck?
I think so.
Okay, I went to tilt my bucket and it's not tipping. I looked and our hydraulic— hold on, we should use some cloth, man. Yeah, we don't want to get hydraulic oil all over. Get us a scrap cloth. This will be the problem right here.
Okay, ready? That's it.
I don't know if it got bumped. All right, try tilting it. All right, down. Perfect. Okay, looks like it's on there good now.
This needs to go down.
So Papa's out here pulling the, uh, the feet out.
All right, we have hooked up the chains for this one more. We got one more and then I think we can clean up and get at this. We have to pull it out first to where then we can get in, get it. We can't pull in anymore with the tractor, we hit our muffler.
Hey!
All right, there's only one thing in between us and this project is getting this swept up. We got it swept. We're ready to go. It's 2:20. That's when we wanted to start doing chores. Although Josiah is gonna be on it. He is gonna set up nets. That's gonna help us a lot. Joe and I can focus on this. First thing, let's do make our cuts. All right, it's going fast now, my man. What's those for? Wait, whoa, those go— bless you. They go out there, man. We don't have to cut them. Oh yeah. Sorry, bless your heart. You haul those back out and I'll haul our cuts out. I think we're done in here. Got all my stuff in the wheelbarrow. Let's haul it out there. I think we'll make the saw, uh, skill saw cuts outside with the power. We got our 4x8 plywood set up, half-inch, 2-foot wide pieces. So let's get to work. We're gonna, we're gonna skill saw right down the middle. All right, Jonah, we've got our shim boards up. Let's nail it, man. Let's get it going. Let's just knock it out right here. All right, we got our shim in. We've got our backboard in. We put the— she had us put this— these are Anna White plans. We had the other end, you temporarily attach it just so it gets at the right height. That's pretty clever. So then we actually attach These are going to be the foot posts, so we build it here and then unattach it and bring it out. That's pretty, that's pretty clever. Let's do it. We got a bunch of our pegs. That's all that calls for, but I feel like it needs some more support in here and then more support in here. So we're gonna make— we have 3 more to go, uh, let's make 12. Let's do 9, 9 more. Look at there, Jonah! We've got— we're getting it, buddy, we're getting it! Extra ribs, I like these every 2 feet. It's gonna be super strong. We've marked so that we, uh, get them right here even and straight across. And then it's the plywood, which is going to be very fun and fulfilling. It is 4:30, so I don't know if we're gonna be able to move the cows before supper— sheep or sheep— but maybe we can show Mom this before supper. Let's do that. All right, we've overcome a lot of obstacles. We're gonna be late doing our chores, but I'm telling you, once I put the top ply board on and I feel how secure— this is so legit. This, this is so legit. This is flimsy. This, not so much. Okay, I think we can get this on before supper. We got 20 minutes, and then we can get the beautiful one down here to check it out and maybe Maybe she can put on the first bucket. What do you think, guys? That look good? That looks good. Good job, Jonah. You know, we overcame. We had a lot of obstacles, a lot of obstacles. We didn't give up, and there it sits. All right, let's go get her.
Yeah, but we do got to move the animals after dinner.
Yeah.
Hey, Judy, you got a minute? Yeah. Okay, what you making?
Um, well, that's for tomorrow's crust, but this is— I made naan. Oh, we're having like lamb burgers. So I also have tzatziki sauce in the thing and Brussels sprouts.
Big Daddy Graylin. Now let's show her. All right, looks good.
Like it. I love it.
Oh, I love it. And that ain't going nowhere.
No, it's not going anywhere. I like that.
We thought you would put the first bucket on. All right, that apple cider vinegar is kind of heavy. Don't pick that one. Oh, oh, perfect, man! That's boss.
Okay, and then what I want to do is put this— put those on the bottom, up on top. Oh, I like that. Oh my goodness. Well, I figured we put the heavy stuff on the bottom.
All right, no, yeah, put those on the bottom. They're heavy, aren't they? Not really. Look how perfect that fits. See why it would go? I think that goes on the bottom.
Yeah, I want to put a bunch of my buckets on the bottom over here. Okay. No, I love it. It's perfect. Okay, good deal. That's what we need. Looks so good. I really like it.
Yeah, I gotta get back. Okay. All right, you get back. This is gonna last years. Like, like, you're gonna be used— like, your kids are gonna be using this. That's what I'm talking about. It's the next day. It's Mother's Day. Happy Mother's Day to one of the best Moms in the world. Thanks. Thanks for giving birth to my children. You're welcome. And nurturing them so well. You're welcome. Creating and nurturing, that's a special person. Look though, she's— this is what you did on Mother's Day. It is. You stacked it in.
I couldn't stand that I have— this is what I love, organizing.
Yeah.
You wouldn't necessarily know that about me, but it makes me happy.
It's the next day and we didn't have time to put all this stuff on yesterday. No. But today that's, that's what you do this morning on your Mother's Day. Do you want to explain some stuff or you just wanna—
I just got my minerals. I just love it so much. It's so much nicer, all this extra space. Yeah. That we have and like that there's no floor on the, like, there's no bottom shelf. Because then I can just pull the stuff out and sweep. With these shelves, because we have screwed them to the wall, it's hard to get sweep— swept under. And then it— and that drives me crazy. Like that, um, yeah, mess that's under there that I can see but I can't get to.
I know you had to lift the cage to get to it. That's annoying. Um, so customs where it's at.
Yeah, and then I've got all of our stuff here. All of our, um, like medicine type stuff and then just other things. I still have extra room to put things. I mean, I don't really want to fill all these shelves. But I mean, I guess we could put like extra feed. Feed up there if we had it or whatever. I mean, we could put these up on top. They're extra feed.
Yeah, they're extra minerals we don't need every day or every other 2 or 3 days. We store up top with the cowbells and the rope halters and the cow collars. You might access those once a year. Yeah, if that. Over here you've added a compost tea station. I like it.
So this will be where I brew my compost tea. I need to get that— I need to, I need to get some storage for these little bags that I have. Yeah. Um, I haven't figured out what I want, how I want to store them. What about jars? Well, the only thing about jars is breakage. Yeah. So I need to think about getting plastic and then I need to think about just that need to be protected from the sun. That sort of thing.
Yeah, that's true.
So I'm figuring that out still, and then I could put them all just right here. Okay. On the shelf, get rid of this, and then I can easily access what I need to make compost. Okay. And yeah, but I'm excited about having this. This is your new battery station. Um, and that's what will be on this shelf.
Thank you. All right, good job, Mom. Happy Mother's Day.
Thank you. Thank you for helping Jonah. Jonah wanted to book this for my birthday. Oh, you're welcome.
