Healing Goals for Jonah + Prepping the Crop Gardens for Winter

A family discusses Jonah's recovery goals after an injury, including hourly movement, water intake, and sunlight exposure. They debate his birthday gift between a sandbox and motorbike, weighing safety features like go-kart roll bars versus dirt bikes. Then they plan winter garden prep: removing invasive plants, managing sweet potatoes, and covering beds with a silage tarp for cover crops.

What you getting ready to do with him?
We're gonna finish while we're waiting for his tutoring.
Is this the first one or the second one?
Second.
Nice. His hospital video.
Actually, just look at it again and then flip this piece out. So now it's— instead of being kind of folded up like that, now it's— so it wasn't bone fragments? It has a fragment attached to it.
Is that hard for you to see, Jonah?
Kind of.
Yeah? How so?
I don't know, because it was so much pain.
Yeah. How much pain are you in today?
It's like sore. He's like not— he's not really in pain. It's more just he's been sitting for days. Yeah. Which I think if you got up every hour.
That's goal number one. We got vision, we got goals.
You gotta have goals.
Get up every hour, every hour on the hour.
So at 9 o'clock you'll— because you're about to do tutoring at 9 o'clock.
Yeah, every hour on the hour, that's easy to remember.
At 9 o'clock, 10 o'clock, 11 o'clock, 12 o'clock.
I'm gonna throw this goal in there we haven't already talked about. He's got to read before he watches Yeah, I think so too. There's no excuses. Sit in the sun an hour, you have no problem with that one. How about wheel all the way to the— you can't say walk. Oh, what do you say when you're in a wheelchair? You wheel all the way to the end of the cow pasture and back to the road back. Yeah, you've been doing it once, right? Or once and a half-ish.
And that can be your get up and walk around 2, because you have to walk out.
Yeah, that could be on the hour and count as your walk around. There's one more, uh, 4 glasses of water. Where's your water?
Not here. I hear you had some.
We gotta get that urine more clear. Your job is healing. That's your job.
Papa?
Yeah?
Which one would you think you would want me to get? You've got— you, you and Mama and Papa either get me a sandbox and everybody else get me trucks Sandbox is not a bad idea. Or I get a motorbike.
Okay, I was saying, so let's hear. So you want either a sandbox or a motorbike? Okay, yeah, I think we'll get you a sandbox. Birthday's coming up, right? Hey Beck, get him like a sandbox or a motorbike? Which one would you rather get him? Sandbox. What you putting on him, Beck?
Some deep blue.
Yeah, but what is that?
Essential oils.
People don't know our code. It's, uh, the code.
It's like a topical analgesic.
Hey, why all the noise? Why all the noise?
I don't know.
Okay, y'all ready? Hey, get out of that! Oh no, she's burying her bones in there, I think. And we just planted the COVID crop.
We have to put a little bit more right there.
I don't know if this will stop her. I doubt it will.
Probably will. It might stop the cats.
Oh yeah, that'll stop her. I think the pig panel is a good idea. Look at that, you could double as a cucumber trellis and a dig prevention. Hey, you little squirt, you ready to go?
You ready to go?
We need to get these morning glories off this persimmon tree. It's gonna choke it. How are your pigs this morning? Good. Oh my word, like 4 feet.
Thank you. I'm not helping pack or unpack.
Mark, get set, go!
Is it hard? There's no motor.
No. Okay, good deal. Look at him hurrying. Hey, you aren't getting lazy, are you? You're getting lazy, man. You've been sitting there an hour and a half.
No, I came back at 30, 30 minutes ago for a ride.
Okay, so X marks the spot.
That's where the North Pole says.
Hey, how long has it been since you had a shower?
Uh, I'm pretty sure I had one on, uh, Monday afternoon.
Oh, okay. Oh, so it's been, uh, a week and a day. Hey Josiah, where are your shoes?
I don't know.
Brown, where are your shoes?
Uh, outside.
Hey, y'all leaving? Okay, bye-bye. I think you're getting faster and faster at this. You're just over it. What are you gonna watch? What's so exciting?
Meat Eater.
Meat Eater? Haven't you finished it?
There's— it's a season.
What are you gonna do if you finish it?
Uh, I don't know. I think there's a lot of them though.
Okay. How many glasses of water have you drinked?
Drunk?
Drunk? How many glasses of water have you drunk?
2.
Oh, well, you're doing pretty good. You're halfway there. It's noon.
All right, Josiah, where are we? In our motorcycle. We're in our motorcycle to Look at safety equipment. Maybe something like that is what we should get. This one's not terrible. I'm not, I'm not, I'm not opposed. I'm not opposed.
I think this is really what Jonah wants.
No, this is not what it was actually. This is not what he wants? No. But are you sure? I feel like this is— he would want it. He probably would want it. Opens like that. You should get in, get in so we can see what it's like. It's a little too big.
So if he was racing, this is going to be the ideal size for him. If he's just trotting around in the backyard and doesn't have any plans for racing anytime super soon, a medium, the next size up, would be more ideal.
Okay, get more time out of it.
Only thing you need outside of this is kneepads.
We do need a go-kart, but I still wanted to keep my dirt bike. All right, we're headed home now to, uh, see Jonah, give him his gift. We bought him a gift. It's her problem, not mine.
Let's go get these guys. You hold that, Lily. Oh really? Yeah, FedEx driver didn't have a shirt on either, huh?
No, he was like, huh? How about you put the fence on the ground and we'll put it into the ground?
Okay, you're gonna need a hammer along this road. Okay, okay, you guys pull them tight and untangle them. Unbelievable. Same thing happened this morning.
What'd you guys do?
We took in a corner.
But then it'll be grounded. Ow. Yeah, that's a really low defense. Look at this. Hi-ya!
Let's go garden with the chickens. Sheep are doing a good job clearing the sweet potato leaves. I think they need more time though. The chickens, on the other hand, don't need any more time. It's starting to compact. Let's get them over here on the potato garden. I don't think they'll attack our potatoes. If they do, there's not enough in here to really worry about it. There's way more weeds. Our second batch of potatoes didn't do that great.
Look at this potato!
What? That sweet potato's serious.
I know.
Catch!
Chick!
Let's get all the squash out of here.
Papa, Papa, Papa!
Hey, it's 3:15. Did you walk?
I walked 2:30. I forgot that.
Come on, let's go. You feeling okay? How's Meat Eater? Good. What do you shoot today?
I was fishing in Texas.
What do you get?
Fish.
You set in the sun today? Yes. All right, that's what this is. It's really getting to be that time. I need to be inside cooking, but just got this marked. I just want to see if it's going to be crazy hard. One edge, maybe. That wasn't too bad, and that was the edge, so it's only going to get easier than that. The edge the grass creeps in and it gets thicker. So that's that. I think I know what we're getting into tomorrow. I have one more day to get everything done before I leave for the Food Independence Summit in Ohio. What do you think, Beck? He's serious about some footing. Did we have footings on the old one?
I doubt it.
It's legit. Hey, my man, how was acupuncture?
It was good.
How was the motorcycle shop?
It was good. I just wondered why we didn't buy go-karts.
Do you think go-karts are safer?
I feel like they are. They seem like they are.
Roll bar, strap down harness.
Like, it's a 5-point harness. It's like comes up here, goes here, down.
Do they go faster?
I don't know. The lady at the chiropractor said we were safer.
Hmm, he's got to face his fear.
Well, what— well, yes, he's going to.
We have friends who got hurt in gymnastics or whatever, in a car accident or whatever. They are made to get back on.
Yeah, so he's gonna— horse riding, he'll get back on the, uh, but he has to like— he doesn't have to do it, he just has to ride it again. Yeah. Um, But going forward, I'm just wondering where we're gonna go, like what we're going to, uh, yeah, do. Because like four-wheeler— do we get rid of the four-wheeler?
Our deck is a bit bigger than last time. It's 10 feet out, 20 feet long, so might as well get some improvements out of this project, huh? Waterproofing project. What is this?
I had to fix it.
He made it down here. You got a handlebar?
They got handlebars.
That's the right one.
The guy we talked to, him, the guy, all those people ride motorbikes, all of them. One of the first guy I talked to, he dislocated his hip at 14. Then the other guys had a partial dislocation. Like, they were like, yeah, he'll be fine. I was like, okay, they still ride. Oh yeah, they jump. I think so. That was, that was fun. Jumping.
You're not gonna jump?
Yeah. Um, well, no, we're gonna get some help. We're gonna get a pro. Yeah, somebody who knows.
We can get some lessons. Her plate. This plate. Oh, these are my version of a french fry. Pork rind. Their plate. What's she shooting now?
Um, I think it's a mule deer from India, but it's in America.
Did you accomplish your goals today?
I think so. I don't know about the water.
Did you drink 4 waters?
I think I lost—
Somebody get him some water!
That's what I asked you.
Oh, that's right. I forgot. Hang on. Nice sweater, dude. I don't know about this dirt bike culture in our house. I didn't know we were a dirt bike family. Well, anyway, you don't want to miss tomorrow's video. Gosh, we're moving sheep, we're finishing up that garden, we're going to cover it up. Silage tarp. You guys want to see how to cover up a fall garden to prep it for, uh, cover crops, winter cover crops? Luke, our farm sitter, is coming. Yes, he's coming, even though I'm not— because I've got a lot to do. I could certainly use the help tomorrow. Um, deck's coming on tomorrow. Oh my gosh. So tomorrow, learn and see us move sheep into abandoned forest pasture and cover this garden, Lord willing, and the creek don't rise just in time for my trip. If I feel I can get that garden covered, uh, the sheep out of there— oh my gosh, yes, the sheep are that way. So point me that way. That's not like it helps because there's— you can't see through a wall. But, uh, yeah, we're gonna get them out, back out to the pasture and pack. Okay, tomorrow join me. We're gonna be running around like a chicken with his head cut off.
