Homemade (no grain) Donuts + 2020 Speaking Tour

In this informal YouTube video, Victor Justin Rhodes (Speaker A) and Rebecca demonstrate how to make a grain‑free, refined‑sugar‑free donut using ingredients such as maple syrup, arrowroot powder, coconut flour, coconut oil, palm shortening, and a butter‑maple‑sugar glaze. They walk through the preparation steps, discuss equipment (silicone donut molds, pastry bag, oven temperature of 350 °F for about 18 minutes), and share tips on handling the batter. Interwoven with the cooking demo is a promotion of their 2020 speaking tour, detailing six upcoming events: the Mother Earth News Fair in Texas (Feb 15‑16), the Mother Earth News Fair in Nashville (May 16‑17), a meetup at Lehman's in June, a visit to Layman's in Ohio, an on‑farm Mother Earth News Fair at Polyface Farms in Virginia (July 17‑18) featuring Joel Salatin, and a Homesteaders of America event in Virginia (Sept 25‑27). They describe the themes of their talks—"If I Can Homestead, So Can You" and "10 Things I Learned from the Great American Farm Tour"—and mention affiliate links, discounts, and ticket information. The tone is conversational, enthusiastic, and community‑focused, aiming to both teach a recipe and rally viewers to attend their events.

Gaps donuts.
Well, they're not completely gaps, but you are a donut fool.
What's the non-gap part? Maple syrup?
Maple syrup and arrowroot powder.
Okay, cool. She's making donuts from— we eat so much out of this. People want our recipe, we'll just get this book. Yes, eat what you love, Danielle Walker.
It's good.
It's, uh, grain-free, refined sugar-free. It's good stuff. Hey Rebecca, we're getting on here real quick. Let's, let's, let's connect to these folks. Okay guys, we love you, we want to hang out with you, we want you to experience community. We're going on a speaking tour 2020. Yeah, we're back.
Our farm is established, turned into that.
We can now think about actually leaving, can't we?
Yes.
No, we're not getting any sold converted school bus. No, we're not buying Maple back and going on a tour tour. We're going to fly to a lot of these places, but we're going on tour broad across America as much as possible, as much as the opportunities present itself. So we're going to the Mother Earth News Fair in Texas. That's middle of February, February 15th and 16th. Guys, I'm going to give you a link for all this down in the description. Some of these— most of these are paid events. I think the layman's one is free, I'm not sure. But we're going to give you links to this. There's going to be discounts and info on all that down in the description. Now, is this gaps coconut palm sugar?
No, no, it's not. I forgot this is another thing.
Okay, but we're handling it all right.
Yeah, we're doing—
we've been doing gaps for a year and we're handling it. So what do you have, guys? We'll get to— we'll talk about our events in a second, but I bet you guys are wondering about this. You got coconut oil, farm fresh eggs, Coconut milk. This is kind of like an old-fashioned donut. You got a vanilla, chocolate, apple cider vinegar. Look at this maple syrup. Okay, that's Texas. That's coming up, guys. You got to get in on that. A lot of you already signed up. I've got talks both days on that. The Mother Earth News Fair, same two talks both days. Um, one talk each day. I'm butchering this. What am I trying to say?
So you have— you will be talking both day— you'll be talking 2 times at each Mother Earth News Fair, same talks for each fair. That's totally different.
I'll give you guys an example. There's one talk I've titled If I Can Homestead, So Can You. So it's about showing, telling our story of how we've overcome the big things everybody overcomes, like money, money issues, the the not, the not knowing how to do this issues, the I'm sick or I have some sort of health struggle. And then it's empowering you, it's giving the tools we used, empowering you to just plant, really. And then the other talk is the 10 things I learned from the Great American Farm Tour. That's amazing, that's going to be a lot of fun. And those two talks, I do one on each day Uh, at the Mother Earth News Fair. Then we go to— what's next?
Well, okay, Mother Earth News Fair is February 15th and 16th, and then we will go to the Mother Earth News Fair in Nashville, and that is May 15th and 16th, I think. Wait, no, it's the 16th and 17th. May 16th and 17th. It's outside of Nashville.
Okay. But yes, what do you add now?
I'm adding coconut flour.
So these talks, as she does that, these talks, we're not the only ones talking. A lot of other speakers at these events, except for layman's, I believe we might be the only ones. Maybe.
No, I think there's more.
There's more. Did I make you lose count?
Yes.
Are we, are we in trouble?
Or I don't think so. I just have— you have to, because I'm making a double recipe, so Okay, then we're gonna go to Lehman's in June. Lehman's in June 27th, but we're gonna do a meetup on the, um, the talk is on the 27th.
We're having a meetup Friday and you guys can go and check out their store. Uh, it's everything you need to live without electricity. We're gonna have fun with them. What's this step?
Baking soda. And salt, and then we're done.
When are we gonna whirl it?
Like, as soon as I add the salt.
I wanna see it whirls.
Okay.
Should we tell them about the fourth event before you whirl it, or?
Fourth event is Polyface.
Oh, Layman's, by the way, Layman's. Before we get to Polyface, Layman's, it's in Ohio. For those of you who don't know. And it's an amazing store.
Kidron, Ohio.
Pretty much everything you need to live without electricity. We already did a video on it. We've already visited it on the Great American Farm Tour. We're going back. We had a very popular video. I'm very excited about that one. This is the housewares room because if you're gonna grow your own food, you're gonna have to freeze it, chop it, bake it, cook it, or eat it. That's what it's about. Yeah, this room has everything that you need to do that, including cast iron. I know she's interested in that. You're excited, I'm excited, a lot of people are excited. I know people have emailed or whatever and told me they're excited about that one.
Yeah, I'm really excited about Lehman's.
You guys, if you want, I'll leave our past video to their store. It was really popular, um, down in the descriptions for you guys to check out.
I'm gonna wear it up.
Okay, whirl.
Did it whirl? Yeah, it whirls, but you gotta take it off and make sure everything gets combined.
Ready to cover polyface? Yes, we're pretty much going to one of the best farms in America, Polyface Farms, for another Mother Earth News Fair. That one's going to be super cool, like a fair at Polyface, like on their farm. There's going to be some amazing workshops there. That's— that I feel like is going to be a historical event. Joel is excited about it. When I did our last video with him and I asked him, is there anything you would want to share and how people could find out more about you? You know what he wanted to share? He wanted to share the Mother Earth News Fair.
But what's really exciting to me is what's going to happen next summer, July 17th and 18th here. We're going to host the very first on-farm Mother Earth News Fair. And we're going to have— there's going to be 300 vendors. We're going to have, you know, Elliot Coleman is going to be here, Darren Doherty from Australia, probably the number one water guy in the world. It's going to be a marriage of Stottman Grass Farmer, Acres USA, Mother Earth News news. So commercial, homesteading, farmsteading, large-scale, small-scale, livestock, plant, energy, you know, the whole spectrum. And, and, and we're hoping that we get 5,000 each of those 2 days, a total of 10,000. And that's what we think our limit is that we can handle. And I would like for this to basically put a stake in the ground. You guys can laugh at us. I mean, you guys, I mean, that's pretty generic, okay? You guys can make fun of us, say that it's all, you know, hokey and silly and whatever else, but look at this baby. There are a lot of knees that haven't bowed to Baal that are questioning the orthodoxy, that are ready to build soil and grow things and be self-reliant and not just take whatever Chase Manhattan Bank says. And I like it.
We're making a stand. We're making a stand.
We're saying right here, right now, you come and look at this and talk to these people and see what brings thousands of people out on a dirt road in Swope, Virginia to come and fellowship. Maybe you're missing something. Maybe you're missing something.
This could be a historical moment. Yeah, yeah. We've already booked our vacation stay. We're already booked. We're coming.
Good. Well, the scuttlebutt in the community— I haven't verified it for sure with the Chamber of Commerce, but the scuttlebutt is we're getting secondhand from people that the rooms in Stanton are already starting to fill up. We got 1,400 rooms in Stanton, and if they're already getting full, Um, and tickets haven't even gone on sale yet. That's a good sign. I think I'm pretty excited about it.
I think there's going to want to be a lot of people that want to take a stand with you. We're going to take a stand with you, and we'll see you then.
Yeah.
Okay, looking forward to it.
Thank you. Yep, it's going to be fun. Joel's excited, I'm excited.
All right, here we go.
What you looking for?
Getting my bag.
Is that where you keep your tips for that?
No, it's not a tip. I'm keeping something to hold it shut. It's, um, a clothespin. Oh, but I— it's— there's normally a clothespin in here, but there's not one in here right now.
So what about that paper clip?
We'll try a paper cup. Okay. I gotta do some things.
That's an interesting trick. Did they tell you that in the books?
Nope.
What are you greasing that with?
Palm shortening.
Hey, somebody in one of our last videos when we made donuts wants to know what these are.
They're silicone donut molds.
Yeah, so they're, um, I found them Through Daniel Walker. Hmm. What's that? I should probably hit that bell. What's that alarm for?
Unplug the spigots. It's probably 6 o'clock.
It's not getting dark as soon.
Yeah. It's not, is it?
No. Hey, Jonah!
Oh, I came to!
Don't forget the spigots, my man!
Yes, sir!
Good job!
There's some debate on whether this is safe or not. But if we want to have donuts, it's either this or a Teflon pan, which I'm not— I know I'm not using. These are, they're actually made in Germany and they're food-grade silicone. So I'm just, you know, just doing the best that I can. We want to eat donuts, so.
So if people don't have this contraption, are they just pouring it into the donut mold?
No, so what she says to do in the directions is to put it in a plastic bag and then cut the tip, but I would— I have a— I have a pastry bag.
Pastry bags from your cake decorating days or icing bag. Okay, so is now a good time?
Yeah.
The fifth— fifth event is another Mother Earth News in September. Do you remember the dates off your head?
25th, 26th, and 27th.
That we don't know which two days we're gonna be there, so Stay tuned on that. We'll let you know. We're gonna announce each event. Yeah, before each event, close— it's closer to date. There are advantages to getting in now. Yeah, some of these folks are giving discounts for getting in early, getting the tickets online. Some of these we get a cut, so we thank you guys very much for going through that. It's a little affiliate link for us. We thank you. The sixth one: should we wait till you Pull out the donuts? Should do. Yeah, well, maybe the pulling out and eating is the finale.
Come.
So let's get a shot of you pouring them in here. There's one more. Dear to our hearts. There's one more. It's always a blast. We've been to it twice, so we can speak personally. So we're gonna Oh, she held it shut with that paper clip just to get over here. Wow, you're not even using a tip.
Nope, you just let it go through the end.
You got tricks.
Well, I have been doing this a while. I'm pretty much a donut expert maker now.
And then all we have to do then is now put it in the oven. Yeah, on 350 for how long?
18 minutes is my oven. I never do make 16 donuts. Oh wait, maybe I do, because yes, I do make 16. And this makes 16 donuts.
You're on 13, babe. 14, 15.
I know I want to make 18 for some reason because this is how many there are in this. But hold on.
Well, that's what you're about to do. You're going to make them thicker. Do they rise?
They do.
So you're gonna put them in at 350 at what? How long?
18 minutes, I said.
Oh, you said that, didn't you? We're about to cook these. Let's, let's tell them, let's tell them about the last event. It's the Homesteaders of America event in Virginia. Always a blast. This will be our third time, and there we're going to be talking our intro to permaculture talk. Your Best— Designing Your Best Homestead Ever. And for the first time—
oh yeah, this will be fun.
You ready? We're all gonna kind of get up there and we're gonna talk about family-friendly homesteading because we get a lot of questions about how to get everybody involved, how to get another spouse on board, how do you get your children into it, how do you deal with butcherings? All these great questions that, uh, we got some answers to.
Yeah, and so me and 2 of the kids will be up there. We'll all speak together. Yeah.
Yeah, it'll be fun, and we'll do Q&A after and all that good stuff.
So yeah, and they have tickets on sale right now.
Yeah, right now, but you got to get them in, you got to get in before March. Yes, so early bird gets the worm.
So if you know you're going, book your hotel room too.
Yeah, because it's gonna get crowded, y'all.
Filled up.
We were so excited about the event. We book our Airbnb right after. Right after.
Yep. So we make sure we get a house because I have to have a kitchen.
The donuts are out of the oven. What's your icing there, Rebecca?
It is just buttered, butter melted with powdered maple sugar. Like, I powdered some maple sugar, so.
You want one?
Yeah, you can have free. See, one. See, you get one.
How long do we have to let it cool before we eat? What do you think, Mr. Brown? Can I have your donut?
No. Oh, they wouldn't.
Was it worth it, Rebecca?
Oh yeah, the wait for the donut.
Yeah, the work, the wait. Oh yeah, always good.
It's delicious. Yummy. So let's just go, let's ask her, let's see what she does.
Like, so these are like an old-fashioned donut. They're moist, they're cakey, they're sweet, they're cakey. Could you fry these? Take it another step?
I think they'd fall apart. I think a normal person
