How long can we quit the grocery store

Victor Justin Rhodes and his family attempt to stop buying groceries on day 3 of their Grow 30 challenge. They chase escaped pigs, milk animals, and plan meals around what they're raising: turkey, eggs, mozzarella, butter, and sour cream.

Get off of that and let him ride it, please. He's obsessed with that Jeep. Why aren't you getting on it, Henry? We got a traffic jam here. Henry wants us down to the road. We've got to go down through there. It is day 3 of Grow 30. Our goal is to get closer and closer to us quitting the grocery store habit. I noticed— I think it's going to be harder than we thought. It's Sunday seed day, the one day a week we can dedicate all day. There's no No distractions, nothing going on in the remodel. It's the big time farm project day. Let's make this a mega vlog, shall we? You've loved these in the past, let's see if you love them now. Jay said the pig's out. Mama pig's out. I wonder how long this mama pig's been out and how much she's destroyed. Oh no, piglets are out too! Go that way, Papa. How many piglets are with her? Go that way so she doesn't get— go that way.
Okay.
Come on, pig's grazing.
First rule when the pig gets out: don't panic. Second rule: get the pig board. Oh, see, you're doing some damage.
Come on.
That way she got out.
Must have been where she got out.
Well, look at her trying to get back in. Thanks for showing us how you did this. Go! All right, other pig. Where's the piglet? It's gonna be harder to catch that piglet here. Just chase it down to the hay. Chase it in there. Chase it in there. There you go.
There it goes.
Uh, I think that's a dead end, isn't it? Here, I can grab it. Mom's so tired she don't even care. Okay, yeah, that'll do it. She's of course nursing right now, but if we get her skim and grain this morning, she'll be less likely to want to get out. They can do some damage quick. Thankfully it doesn't look like she damaged Mom's garden. That was awesome, you guys, for chasing her down. There's no skim milk down here. That's what happened. Skim was in that bucket, she knocked it down, and buddy, she got up every last drop. Even if she had to dig and eat some dirt. Can you guys take your Jeep and go get me the skim milk? It's next to the fridge in the house. That's a good job for y'all. This grocery store thing, I guess we're still, uh, defining our rules, finding what we really want. I mean, we're not wanting to do something just for a spectacle. We're in this food growing journey for our health. So we want to make sure it aligns with our health values. Really, for 30 days I could just eat meat. I've eaten just meat for 60 days, and we have plenty of meat from our farm. But to be honest, it was pretty miserable, and it's difficult, and it's, it's really not sustainable. We're, we're wanting to explore what's sustainable. Well, yeah. Sustainable in the sense of a long activity for us, you know. I think we're going to go to the extreme and quit the grocery store at some point.
That's good.
I noticed, uh, it's going to be a lot of, uh, breaking our old habits. For instance, we set out a turkey for Turkey Devarn. Our heart is set on that, but then we don't have broccoli. It's not broccoli season, so we're ordering some broccoli today from the grocery store. But we're learning to be more thoughtful in our meal planning in that case, and that's what this Grow 30 is about. It's about pinpointing our old habits and beginning to create new ones. Where's the milk?
Was it in glass jars?
Yes, beside the fridge. You got them? Where are they at?
Over there.
Extra milk in here. Skin milk. All right, I give Mama skim milk because, you know, she's lactating. I like to give her the extra support. We sure don't want to drink it. It's not good for you having all the fat content, uh, pulled out of it. Don't buy the lie. This thing looks awful for you. All right, go ahead. But it fattens a pig like nothing other. Well, I guess it fattens humans like nothing other too, ironically. Hey, beautiful one. Hey, you thought you were gonna go sit with your mom at 8:45. It's not until 9:45, so you want to putz around with me for an hour? Here, you'll like this next job. You'll like the job after this next one. Let's get the mama her skim milk, and then let's get that tarp off your, uh, high tunnel and wet it some more. Okay, I think it's dried out underneath there. Night, beefcake. There's buckets in the bucket stall. Piglets are starting to eat. Goodness, pigs are super tough on things. Let's try It's tying the feeder lower down. Just when you think you got them figured out and put in, I'm gonna I'm gonna—
when we get into this house, because I don't want to bring nothing over to that farmhouse. Yeah, I'm gonna get this like egg washer. It like fits on the egg, so you put it in and you just like— yeah, and it's like perfect. It's, it's— I'm not sponsored by them, I just have gotten their ad.
Hey, there's— oh, I don't know what's her name. I don't know. Hey, you, you, you, you— there's a trend. People are, are, are not washing this before they eat it. Campylobacter E. coli, salmonella. Are you crazy? I, I think what's happening is you're getting confused. You don't actually have to wash this. Well, you don't for it to remain good on your counter, like 4 to 8 weeks.
Yes, see this clean one, this very nice clean one, but we're still washing it. I still wash all my eggs before I use them. Yes, even clean.
Note to self.
Well, especially when they come from the high tunnel, it's just so dusty in there.
Yeah.
I feel like my dust could— maybe I'm crazy.
But you know, if they're like that though, we'll store— we will, we'll store them on the counter. Shall we get this rogue chicken while she's here? All right, let's get poor Beefcake fed. Beefcake getting a mix of grain and our food scraps. That might actually be okay, might not even be broke. Hanging up over there. You don't want any wetness in your deep bedding. Bacteria is going to form. We need to— that's— we need to cover it up. But we have all the deep bedding from the high tunnel. Let me carry you over it. Look. We got this covered. That's much better. Puddles. I like a good rain event to show you where you're vulnerable.
I'm filling this up.
We'll see if that ain't got holes in it. They're eating our nets.
All right, now rig it in there and then come cut this.
Today, like any day, we're trying to do the most important things. Towards growing what we eat and eating what we grow. I saw Mom go up the hill to Grandma's. That's one of the things, exactly what we wanted by inviting them to stay here on the farm. One, we can be around them, they can be around their grandchildren, and two, we can take care of them in their older age. Grandma's gotten to the point where she doesn't even want to go to Sunday school, and so big daddy's going by herself and wanted Rebecca— hey, hey, she's really not supposed to be by herself, so Rebecca's gonna go sit with her. They are typical puppies. They're chewing on the bottom of this— your legs, guys, your trap— this tripod. Obviously maintaining what we have going already is the most important thing. Gideon, I want you to come scrape this. I want you to come scrape the sidewalk. It's gotten gross again, especially right there since Mommy Pig dropped a poop bomb. All right, I got this fixed. Kind of made my plug a little less short so maybe it won't get bent into the corner as bad. Gideon, come spot me. Come shut this gate on me. You know, let's not because we just put that dry stuff there. Spray that nipple. See the one he's trying to drink out of? Great on that one. Stop pushing your water down and you won't get so thirsty. Get the tube out of the dirt and dust it off.
That's the wheel.
Yep.
And this is—
yeah, Papa.
Yeah, Papa. Here's this big thing.
All right, give me the tire. Ah, shoot, this is the wrong size tube. That's an 18-inch tube and you've got a 20-inch tire, so Put this somewhere and we'll get you a 20-inch. Tried to fix this bike. Have to get a 20-inch tube. You trying to get them to cross to you?
Yeah, they crossed that creek with me.
Did they?
And they almost got swept away.
Come on, baby.
They following you?
Yeah.
Oh, that's funny. They are following you. They must have imprinted on Lily. She fed them right out the gate. Now don't you let them wash down the creek.
I don't.
You gonna break them up some food? Have you crossed this big creek before? Yeah.
Oh wow, they're eating the sand.
It's minerals. It's got minerals in it. Oh, look!
Oh, look at that one flipped!
I'm obsessed with the success of this high tunnel this year. Oh yeah, look! I'm real meat heavy. Just use a little bit of vegetable. And because Beauty is— she likes to kiss me— she's a little more balanced, like 2 veggies or a veggie and a starch and a meat. She's a 3-part meal kind of gal. This soil needs moisture, and it's— we're tricking the seeds. We're doing exactly what we wanted it to do. Any weed seeds that are in here, see this? They sprouted, and then they will be killed because they're smothered under this tarp. I want to wet this— I want to wet this soil down some more. It was super wet in here. Soil needs water too. It's alive, y'all.
Hey, what are y'all doing?
I see. Hey, y'all come help us move Harriet and Harriet's posse. You'll have free time this afternoon. That's pretty cool treehouse. I like that you put railings on it. Thank you. Never mind, we're not moving Harriet's posse yet. They need to eat lunch. Some people need to eat lunch. What are you gonna make them, Lily?
Rice and chicken.
Okay, we got leftover chicken from last night. Hey, I want you guys to put these Eggs. You didn't eat breakfast on it too. Okay, how was your visit with your mom? It was good. Good. It was good.
So this is, um, Farm Match, and I was just looking at getting some mozzarella, sour cream, butter, cream cheese, and cheddar cheese. Yeah, here, and just see how that is. All right, and see if it works for us. Um, we'll see.
I don't know. So we may have found a source for supplemental dairy. We'll be doing pretty good though because vanilla is giving 2.5 gallons right now. Yeah, and then honey will come in. Oh yeah, we could be having 3, 4 gallons of milk. I want to make mozzarella. We'll be making our mozzarella and sour cream. Sour cream's easy, just leave it on the counter for a day.
It's easy, but we just need the cream.
We might be able to fit this turkey in the Dutch oven, babe. You think I can get this turkey in there? Dutch oven. Yeah, show me your tricks, master. I got it in there quite easily. Hey, do you cook it open or closed at first? At first, Billy, we gotta go move Harriet's posse.
Okay, we should go there to steal a truck.
We got the chick turkey in, 325. When you are a homesteader, you can have turkey in May. All right, you clean up the kitchen real good. All right, you chilling?
Yeah.
All right, let's go move Harriet. Hey, do you— Sam and John are inviting you to the park to go play soccer at 2. Do you want to go do that? Yeah. Do you want to do that? Yeah. Just size game.
So just tell me if this is all we need: mozzarella, sour cream, butter, cream cheese, and then I got a 5-pound block of cheddar.
Cool. We have been making some butter. So how much butter did you get?
4 pounds.
Okay.
I mean, we can put it freezer.
All right.
Yeah, I mean, I'm not saying—
Jonah, thanks for string trimming today. I really love how we just have a work day and y'all figure out something to do and you just do it. Okay, Sam and John invited you guys to the park to play soccer at 2. Do you want to go, or do you want to keep string trimming in the noonday sun? I'll go play soccer. Okay, so what we got to do, make sure though that happens, is we got to get Harriet's posse over for sure. You know where the reels are? There were 2 reels over there and now they're gone. You didn't put them up? Maybe Annie put them up. All right, Jonah, hopefully this won't take us more than an hour and 20 minutes. You gotta get done if you want to go play soccer. Hey, you snuck off to do the fort again? Yeah, well, we gotta go do move Harriet. All the butterflies. You guys can see this. 2 strands of electric work, Josiah. The ram and the weather didn't get out. Steers didn't get out. What's going on?
Yeah, they're hungry.
We hay bombed and they pretty much ate every bit of grass that was in there. One down. All right, go ahead, go ahead. That all we got left, those janky posts? Basically. All right, well, we're gonna prove the concept, and if it works, we'll get those nicer. I believe they're O'Brien posts. Love these posts. Greg Judy swears by them. Hey, and you know what? We might even be able to get away with one strand of electric. That little white one, that will never do a corner post, will it? Yeah, and it's not touching anywhere on the ground, is it? That's nice. This isn't gonna work just high. No, he's got to get a rebar to angle in and post it up, you know. Lily, can you go help Henry get water in that? Oh, he's gonna go over it and it's on. Hurry up! Oh, look how he saw that. He went around it. Come on, sheep. It's not too hard moving animals because they don't have internet. They're pretty bored, and, uh, and in this case, these guys are hungry. And so you open up a door to an all-you-can-eat buffet, yeah, they'll find a way to get through. It's a good life, isn't it, kids?
Yeah, look at this pink rock.
All right, are y'all treasure hunting?
Yeah, look at this.
Could happen.
Wow. Hey, are y'all coming with me?
Yeah, we're gonna play in our treehouse.
I don't think Henry needs to play in that treehouse.
We can play in the grass with the Jeep.
His Jeep's broke down. Why can't he play in his treehouse? Because it's high up. Okay, then y'all come with me if you're not gonna stay here and play. You got jewels for your fort now, okay? Or your house in your case. It's already dead. Oh, you want to get me the battery out of the car— truck? Darling, it turned out nice. Did you take the lid off at some point?
I did, just 20 minutes.
It turned out nice.
Yeah, it does.
We gotta go.
I like the turkey in the Dutch oven.
Oh, that's good. What size is that?
It cooks it really well, and I feel like it also— it's like a 13. Okay, I feel like it cooks it really well, but I feel like it It cooks it really fast.
Yeah, looks like it's a man trip. What? Get in this bar, Josiah. Me and my man. A few moments later. We're going back because Mom's making turkey divine. She needs milk. We have no milk because the calf's got the milk this morning, and we had made all the milk from yesterday into yogurt. So hopefully, because Josiah set the calf up an hour ago— was the calf nursing when you did it? No, I didn't. You didn't? It wasn't nursing? We might be able to get 4 cups of milk because I said to Rebecca, what are we going to do? Because this milk, A2, A2, grass-fed, organic, you can't buy at the store. Like, we won't buy it in the store. It's been years. What's the plan? Get her out. Are we bringing her out here onto the road?
Yes.
Okay. Thanks anyway, cows. I absentmindedly gave Grandma our last quart of milk, not realizing the calf's got it. Oh, they had it? Yeah. All right, just say I went and get it. Okay, can you go get in the truck? We're about to leave. Boom! Why are these different? He wants to get Mama some flowers. I'm not gonna miss that opportunity again. How about this? How about this for your mom? Sure you want blue ones? There you go. All right, mom's birthday tomorrow. Not gonna miss this opportunity. Pouring rain and sunny. Like, it is pouring. Mom knocked it out with this turkey divine. Found a source for dairy. Where are we gonna get Bubbies?
Um, you can order it online.
They sell sauerkraut at the farmer's market.
I think so.
You just might have to let go.
I'm gonna get a freezer full of Bubbies.
There you go, stock up. I don't think we can get a bulk order until we're over at the main house, correct? Yeah, we need some room. That's a good idea though. Let's wait till we get to the holler house. Yeah, I'd buy it.
You can buy it by the seeds.
Yeah, that's one more day. That's day 3, Grow 30. We've made some progress, haven't we?
Yep.
All right, happy day.
