How Mom Gets Stuff Done (with tiny baby)

A mom on a rural farm juggles a newborn, three piglets, and a barn renovation into a community center. She's recovering from oral surgery, the baby won't sleep in a restrictive carrier, and there's a goose egg to collect and mac and cheese to make.
Chapters
Josiah's got watch baby duty. Lily, we coming? It's time to go. Jonah and I and Lily on chore duty. I slept for 12 hours last night, from 7 to 7. Why did I sleep so long? The baby didn't even wake me up. Recognize anything? Left side swollen. Oral surgery on Friday. It's been a 2-year process of getting these implants in the back left of my tooth. Oh nice! Oh, this is legit. Wow. If you don't know, we're turning this barn into a community center. We took out these poles, we saved them of course, historical. We're gonna about to concrete in here, gonna have to have 3 different levels because Henry, I guess, didn't build a pad for this old barn. Grandpa Henry, he just built on the slope. There'll be a step in there. We might keep that covered. I don't know, that'll be something. I don't know. And then we have an open concept in here.
It feels open.
Yeah, I think it'd be nice to have some sort of a stage there. We can, we can put our big screen right there, our projector for premieres. People can pile in there, people can pile out here. You could probably put 50 people in here comfortably. Wow, they hauled some dirt out. Massive pile of dirt. This dirt hadn't seen the weather in a long time. What do you got there? Oh, my old mountain board pad got dug up. Teddy, you feeling good? You feeling good, buddy?
You feeling good?
Let's get out of here before you get too dirty. Oh look, they did the butchering shed too. It's all level, ready to go. Our original idea was to board up the sides of this, but I'm thinking let's just board up that side, keep this open. This is the meat butchering side. You kill, you scald, you pluck, and then you eviscerate. This is the way we're washing it out, so it'd be kind of nice to keep a view, wouldn't it? And I'd hate to be eviscerating right next to a wooden wall.
How do you put windows in? I think that'd be cool.
Well, what about just open air? What's wrong with that?
Well, what about all our stuff getting dirty?
Well, I think the butchering stuff is— oh, dirty from dust spilling in. We'll see. I see I still have a wet weather spring problem right here all along my turnaround. You know, we did have one there and now it's here. It's like, gosh, we've dug two French drains here, can't seem to get to the bottom of it. Oh, she did have a, an egg. The goose has taken every last hay out of the nesting box. Should we take some hay?
They stay on top of the straw, I'm pretty sure.
I don't know if you heard him say it, but he said if not, there's tomorrow. Don't put off till tomorrow what you could do today. How are the three little pigs doing? Awesome. Try to get in without letting them out.
Can I get it too?
Yes. Have you seen them yet?
No.
Pull that out so that they don't have to fight over it. I gave them a little surprise in there, a little skim milk.
That one's not liking it.
Oh, they'll like it. It'll be their favorite. Really? Aren't they nice? Aren't these fun? These are gentle pigs. I really like where we got these guys from. They're so gentle and they're well taken care of and healthy. They are. Well, one's a girl and two's a boy. This is the girl.
Is that one for having babies?
Yes, we'll have two Mama Sows. Guys, don't get too close. Oh my word, you guys, we got everybody on alfalfa. We're gonna spend some time petting the babies. Yeah, they are. Look at that baby eating that. They know what's up. Hey, is this, uh, Bandy's baby? Yeah, he or she made it. What is it?
It's a girl.
It's a she. She made it. You're tough. Look, it's like she has eyeliner on. Yeah, both eyes. You know, that's the style. That's the style.
Not all the other sheep have this style.
Got you, got you! You're gonna have to get pet now. You got in practice holding a baby, huh?
Yeah.
Oh, look, the babies are eating the hay. They waste no time growing up. Look at this one nursing. Gosh, so aggressive already. So big!
See how a lot of people hold their babies? Yeah, the sad thing is sheep can't hold their babies.
No, that's true. Good job, Bandit, you did it! You had a good one. Oh, look what's going on in here. Looks like Rebecca's making, uh, mac and cheese. Look at you! That's one way to get it done, isn't it, babe?
Yeah, he's in this thing where he doesn't— he doesn't nurse to sleep. He wants to be like rocked or moved to sleep.
It's—
I'm not upset about it, but yeah.
Well, give us a tour.
What's going on here?
We got cheese, we got breadcrumbs, I'm gonna start at 10:00 because I figured then it'll take me like an hour-ish to do it and then—
Okay.
Maybe even 10:30. There's no reason to rush. Yeah, and then—
What's this?
Hibiscus tea. Nice. Is brewing.
Okay.
You got your age on your necklace.
I did.
I did get my age.
Oh yeah, let's show them that. So you have this charms.
I can't— yeah, so these are all the— this one is it right here?
I got my H. For all your kids. Now you got one for Henry.
Yep, and you can only put 5.
JJ.
Put 5 charms on a necklace.
Where's B?
G. B?
For big papa.
I'll have a necklace that'll say big papa and nana when our kids start having babies.
Today is Easter Sunday. You're seeing this Monday, so I hope you had a good Easter. It's a big holiday for a lot of people all over the world. Oh, uh, the cows and the chickens and the pigs could care less, as you've noticed. The chores still have to get done.
Getting all the pills off of your sweater.
Is it working?
Yeah, look.
Oh, that's good. Oh good. Oh, that's actually a blade.
There's a blade that spins in there.
Wow.
And it's, uh, nice. We used to have a couch that you had terrible pills on it.
Is that what you call it? Show them, show them some before and after.
Okay, so let's go to the other side, the front.
Oh yeah, look how much—
look at all that. Here, watch, I'll do a demonstration.
Wow, it cleans it up so nice. Stranger hibiscus, what do you do with the flowers? Give them to the pigs?
I don't know if they can eat them, but I guess they can.
What'd you do, just soak it in that hibiscus? Yeah, is that the flower part?
It's the, um, I can't remember the name of it. Coxsill or something like that.
You soak it, you, you soak it in that? Yeah, it's not called soaking, it's called, uh, steeping. Steeping.
So I just fill this up with some water, I put a Several— I don't measure anything. Several handfuls in there. The only thing I do measure is the honey.
How much honey are you gonna put in there?
Cup and a half.
So this is hot now. You're about to put your cup and a half, and then you cool it off, serve it cold. She's double boiling some butter, melting some butter, boiling her water. Guys, this is why she's such a good cook. She waited till just the right time. So this, this, this will be completely fresh when it's time to eat.
And he cooperated. He's back to sleep.
I know, he's going with it. Is this one comfortable? The other one—
well, no. So I believe the other one was maybe causing some clogged ducts.
Ah, is this one?
This one's not.
Good.
Unfortunately, I really did like that other one. I loved the Ergo— I think it's called the Embrace, which is like for newborns, but it was just constricting me in certain places that was causing the clogged duct issue. So I think I was wearing a bra that was causing that issue, so I stopped wearing that bra and I stopped wearing— using that carrier, and I haven't had any issues since.
Cup of milk. What did you just add?
Arrowroot to thicken it.
Okay, and then you're gonna add it to your cheese mix? Milk cheese mix?
Yeah. I feel like I didn't— I feel like I have too much noodles for not enough, uh— I want a lot of sauce. I want it to be delicious.
If you're gonna cheat and have macaroni and cheese, you're gonna have to have it just right.
Well, it's not a cheat for me. It's a cheat for you. I want to make it nice for Big Papa. Especially since he had his surgery.
Yeah, I'm just getting to where I can eat again. Did you set one out?
Yeah, I'm gonna test it.
You want it al dente?
Yeah.
Hey, one thing I noticed from last time— do you need me to do something?
Yeah, will you pour that into the—
okay. Well, we all got dressed up nice. And we're at Grandma's changing a diaper just like we would down there though. Let's see this shirt he's gonna get wearing. You can only wear this once in your life. What's it say?
Second. He's not even opening his eyes.
My very first Easter. You are an Easter egg. You're an Easter egg.
Yeah, we can, we can get a ginormous egg and put them in it.
Look at these little tiny feet. There's something else. How'd the mac and cheese turn out, my man?
Good.
You're eating it first. Is that because you're eating the best first?
No, I eat them. Mommy's eating all of a little bit because it's all so good.
Oh good, he went right back to sleep. He did, he sure did. How'd your mac and cheese turn out?
I, I don't know. We'll see. I'm sure it tastes good.
It's a little, a little runny, but you'll still find a way.
Yeah.
