Hurricane Rains are Coming

The excerpt is an informal family/farm vlog featuring multiple participants (an active narrator labeled SPEAKER A, Rebecca, Randolph, SPEAKER C and other family members such as Jonah, Josiah, Arun and Mr. Henry). The content documents on-site outdoor activity and domestic life: noticing incoming storm/rain, preparing pigs and pasture, discussing a hoist and wheelchair, equipment and chores, friendly family interactions (greetings, hugs, a visiting cousin), and meal preparation (Taco Tuesday and a “super broth”). The tone is conversational and candid, focused on farm chores and family life during rainy weather.

It's a super strange light this morning. Look at that sky though. That means rains are coming, huh? Yeah, sailor's warning. Are the hurricane rains coming, Mr. Henry?
Yeah, they are.
Say, I don't— say you don't care. You're just happy no matter what. That's that side of the house. On the other side of the house is supposedly a rainbow. What is this? Wow, where y'all going first? All right, you want to put the stuff in back of Willie? Boy, it quickly turned ugly. Let's get my wheelchair out, warmed up. We've got to move the luchadors over. This rain is coming. We got to get those pigs moved before it gets absolutely crazy. That's hustle, Birdell. Only thing stopping us from doing the pigs is the other chores. It's starting to rain so hard. Holy moly, well, we're about to get soaked. I feel like I'm doing better today than yesterday, completely off drugs. My body's on its own now, and I think it's slowly but surely getting better. This is good. This is— this looks like a good scene. The birds are just kind of moseying on over. It's starting to pour. Look at me walking. Look at their little, uh, river tower. We'll see if that lasts. That's cool though. Yeah, all right, carrying 80 pounds right now. Look, Cheesecake, you're starting to dig up and root up in here. Good job.
He's also starting to get big.
Just in time for the harvest. We've got to clean out this water. Uh, stinks. We're gonna have to bucket it out. I can't pour it out right here. Here, we'll do an assembly line. Arun, I've asked Jonah to go get an automatic shut-off. Waterer. Hopefully we have one and we could attach it here, and then this will fill up and then stop. This side with our apple cider vinegar. Go for it, buddy. Okay, screw that on there. Should be able to let this go and it'll go to our overflow. When it fills up, it'll automatically stop.
See?
Now we can go. We processed the milk. We got Randolph. Just wait till you see what he's gonna do now. I was gonna walk over there, but why walk when I can take my wheelchair? Sits too, Randolph.
It's a good ride, ain't it?
It is. All right, here, Randolph, we got a problem. We only have this janky pulley hoist. It's kind of janky, this one, and it's kind of just jerry-rigged up on that, on that rig. And I'm thinking you put me a beam from this pole to that pole, and then we can hang our, our beef or our pig, which is coming up Monday.
How much weight you gonna put on it? Well, let's say cow or a pig.
Let's say, let's pretend we had to harvest Stud Muffin, which is be about as big as it ever gets. Um, he's 1,200 pounds live weight, probably. Probably 3 2x6s.
And then you could run the chain through one of them grooves in the roof around it, couldn't you?
You can use those. Are they, are they long enough? Yeah. 11 foot, and that was what, 10 foot? This is going too easy for you, Randall. And I do think you'll be able to get the 2x6 up there because, well, there's 2x6s above it. It's joists. We got the boards. All we lack is the O-hook and the hoist. So I'm gonna see— it's gonna have to go to town. Why not go to Asheville, see if I can't order that hoist for him to pick it up? Bet. Thanks for ironing my clothes. Well, you're welcome. Rebecca, have you hugged them two at the same time? No, I need to. It's like hugging a soft body Sam and a hard body Hank all at once. Oh, Mom, give him a hug. Feel it, it's crazy, huh? Isn't it something? He's so soft and he's so hard.
Giving lots of kisses.
Oldest and youngest right there. Hey, you're taking my wheelchair! Prince is driving off with my wheelchair. Hey, what's the big idea? I'm gonna empty this thing. All right, I'm just teasing. There's your order. What are you thinking about?
Well, I'm thinking when I get them all up there, I ain't gonna be able to drill a hole to put a hook.
Oh yeah.
What do you think about if I run that big chain around it and where you can hook to that big chain?
Yeah, maybe you could use that one.
Well, I got room to run that around it to where you can hook to it.
Yeah, that should be all right. You did get your beam in there though, didn't you? Totally forgot to tell y'all too. Y'all notice something? Lucky's indoors. Lucky's under, under the shed. And Arun has hung our string trimmers. Man, that looks good. Hung our hoses super good. Still don't know what had gone bad on Lucky. Boots was smart, wasn't he? Yeah, he knew who to give what to, because if it was up to me, I probably would have sold Lucky. He gave Lucky to Jonah, and Jonah doesn't want to sell it, so that's fine. He's actually going to see about Mark doing a paint job, get the solenoid fixed. He's wanting to get a new chair, so Lucky lives on. How old is this? Like 32 years? Oh wow, 30 years maybe. It was 1991, so 30 years. All right, there comes Josiah. Jonah's in his lesson. Go get these pigs moved. What a perfect little till job, guys. What a perfect little till job. All right, let's move them. Let's move them on down. These pigs naturally till and are totally rebuilding our pasture. We're going from scrubs to that. That's what it'll be like. Pigs were there. Beautiful. We want to get that going because that takes some time. Ideally, we'd be able to turn it off before we leave. Rebecca, your cousin's here! You excited? Yeah, we got ice cream going for them. Teddy is gonna probably bark.
Hello!
Hi! Hey! Good to see you guys! Me too!
How are you?
Good, good.
It was really a good flight.
It was actually two good flights. Yes. Here they are!
Hi, hi!
How y'all been? Very good. Okay, good. Glad to have you. Look who's awake. The star of the show. You're gonna get a lot of time with Cousin Lauren.
That's right.
Hi! Hey, son.
Say hi, cousin KK.
He's like, who are they? So many new people.
I want another baby.
I want another baby.
But then I'd have twins again.
Then we'd really be in for it.
It is raining again as I work inside, working on this— Joel Salata's got a new book coming out. And we're gonna be the first to be able to sell it. And we're just— it's just things you got to do like this to get that kind of stuff ready. That's not abracadabra, that's typing. Mr. Henry, you helping Mom in the kitchen? It smells good. I sure wish we had smell-o-vision right now because Mama is making— I smell onions and garlic, black beans, and that's cool. Black beans making, uh, and then it does smell really Taco Tuesday, so we're gonna have steak and chicken fajitas. Fajitas.
I've got my, uh, chicken.
Is this a broth going for Mr. Henry? It is.
It's his special super broth.
You getting a super broth coming your way? This is quite the spread. How is it, everybody?
It's really good.
It's a good welcome to North Carolina. A little bit of rain. A little bit of Taco Tuesday. We've got a super broth for you. He's not quite sure yet. Yep, he went back for more.
